Rick Perry Loses

The other week, Perry seemed to score. The new guy, not the caricature he was portrayed to be.

Tonight, his Achilles heel comes clear. Illegal immigration, specifically in-state tuition.

Oh my. How in the world is this explainable to American parents who have had to work their fingers to the bone (the polite expression) to pay for their kids' tuition? What, the obvious question will be, is the difference between state-paid tuition… and state paid health care?

This is rapidly becoming Perry's version of RomneyCare.

Which brings this back to Michele Bachmann's stellar answer about choosing a running mate who understood what it meant to be a constitutional conservative.

And a question: Is Newt increasingly seen as the Adult In the Room?

More to the point: Is Mitt Romney winning the last man standing contest?

Stay tuned. It's only September, a full 11 months to the winner's date with GOP Convention destiny.

The only adult in the room was Ron Paul. They try to ignore him. But he is setting the agenda for the whole campaign debate. They were terrrified to ask him a foreign policy question. Frankly most of the rest of the people on stage sounded like they were running for President of Israel not the USA.

I have predicted since the beginning that Perry would implode by the latest by Thanksgiving. I now lower my prediction down to Columbus Day. I have stated before that Romney and Perry were the worst candidates the elites have ever picked for us. They have proven that they would be unprincipled if they ever got into office. Who needs another Republican nominee like these guys?

beebop| 9.23.11 @ 4:59AM

I got news for you Jack -- if it came down to Ron versus 0bama? I would stay home. So. Unless you WANT Barack 0bama for a second term? Move on.

"Associated Press-GfK poll: Ron Paul the most favorable GOP candidate

A new national poll of the general population has revealed that top tier candidate Ron Paul is the most favorable choice in the Republican Presidential nomination race.

Ron Paul 37% favorable vs 36% unfavorable = +1
Mitt Romney 39% favorable vs 41% unfavorable = -2
Rick Perry 33% favorable vs 36% unfavorable = -3
Michele Bachmann 35% favorable vs 43% unfavorable = -8 "

The Tea Party Rebellion Is Here.

W| 9.23.11 @ 1:25PM

Jack,
Paul gets big applause when he sticks to domestic issues. All conservatives agree to reduce taxes and reduce government regulation, eliminate government agencies, etc.
But on foreign policy he loses, especially on terrorrism and Iran and Israel, all of which are connected.

Cosmo| 9.23.11 @ 4:21AM

Perry is toast because he's weak on immigration just like Bush was....His executive order on vaccine was also Bush-like in its arrogance...
He also follows Bush's ill-conceived strategy on Social Security....If you let young people "opt out" who is going to pay for benefits for retirees?

beebop| 9.23.11 @ 5:00AM

If you let young people "opt out" who is going to pay for benefits for retirees?

Sounds like the perfect definition of a Ponzi scheme to me ....

btims| 9.23.11 @ 6:52AM

And Hussein bin Obama is not arrogant? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.........The One (termer) is so done, it's not even funny anymore.

Most miserable failure of ALL TIME.

rssg| 9.23.11 @ 6:12AM

We wouldn't hav to debate in-state tuition for illegals if they weren't here in the first place. Enforce the border, enforce immigration laws. Deport by the millions.

aware| 9.23.11 @ 7:46AM

The disappointment is palatable here at the Spectator. Sooner or later you will realize Perry is no conservative. Nor Romney.

Perry=inarticulate Statist
Romney=articulate Statist
Gingrich=proven Statist
Bachmann=reluctant Statist
Cain=wannabe Statist

GOP=the right wing of the Statist party

No wonder confusion reins.

Mimi| 9.23.11 @ 9:32AM

What are we gonna do ?? We can always BEG Mark Levin to get in.
Who ever is elected President will have a MOUNTAIN of deliberate destruction to repair !
Ron Paul...we can't say AGE... to avoid discrimination....But National defense and American security is the one thing the Constitution gives to the Federal government to do....I don't know how he can be so wrong on that!
The two top dogs should be separated !

aware| 9.23.11 @ 5:51PM

Paul is not against strong defense. He is against using our blood and treasure to allegedly defend OTHER nations. It is not a military threat that is about to wreak havoc here and elsewhere, it is an economic one. Rest assured, the destruction will be MASS. Don't be fooled, militarily nobody, I mean NOBODY, can push us around. Don't be frightened by incessant claims of the contrary.

What are we going to do? Grow a garden. Can. Pray. Save. Live without debt. Look out for yourself and stop depending on criminal politicians to determine your future. They are bottom feeders and parasites who could only "make things better" by disappearing from the face of the earth.

Speak the truth in an empire of lies and be a true revolutionary.

Margie| 9.23.11 @ 1:36PM

Good day aware,
You see everybody as a statist, except Ron Paul, am I correct?

And I don't see how Herman Cain's a wanna-be statist?
Sheesh.

aware| 9.23.11 @ 5:30PM

Good day Margie!

I only see the record of the candidates. It is plainly a record of building the State for those I mention. Talk is easy and never easier than now. Believing career politician's promises has a worse record than fortune tellers advising you to buy a winning lottery ticket.

I know I am in a small minority but I am sure that it is now too late to prevent a terrible day of reckoning. Even if we slam on brakes heads are going to smash the windshield and there will be lots of casualties. I say anybody that isn't telling you this (and to prepare for incredible hardship) is either lying or doesn't understand what is going on.

The black mark(no pun intended) for Cain is Federal Reserve henchmanship. How anyone with any understanding of our plight could participate in the main center of corruption is beyond me. He grudgingly admits to audit after he saw which way the wind was blowing, but he just cannot imagine a world without the central bank. If he is willing to have this stinking piece of wickedness continue to destroy truth, justice, and the American way, he is a Statist. The Monster State is impossible without it. You know how many Tbills they hold? Trillions worth. Know how they obtained them? They create instant "money" and "loan" it to the Federal government so it can spend all it wants with little regard for "revenue". Now interest on debt is almost equal to "Defense" spending. Think what this means!

As I have said before it is impossible to "control" government if you do not control the purse strings. Change the faces in government all you want but it won't change that simple fact.

And you can call Paul a lot of things, but you could never call him a Statist.

Margie| 9.24.11 @ 2:32PM

Hello again!

This World, and the corruption of it is passing away, as the Bible tells us. The Great Tribulation seems to be in its infancy.. and we both know things are going to crash big time, and we aren't talking about the stock market here, although every day I am waiting to hear it.

As to the candidates, and Herman Cain in particular, it happens to be the point in time which it is~ and they're in the midst of it~ and so are we. And I still must vote for the best one we've got.

I just see it as my duty as a Christian to do. I remember decades ago, I used to think it didn't matter if I voted or not, or was involved politically. But then I realized, of course it does. Why should I sit idly by and just allow the Leftists to win elections?

There's GOOD~BETTER~BEST.

And that's with every decision in life, right?

And then there's not even bothering to vote and not caring.
I know you care. So don't let your vote get thrown away. You probably know that I think voting for Ron Paul would be throwing your vote away.. yeah, because he can't win. And his stance on foreign policy is bonkers.

The worst thing we could do is to let Obama win a second round of utter destruction.
I'm going to vote for the Republican nominee, in order to try and prevent that from happening.

Didn't intend on preaching about voting, but it turned into that, didn't it?
Oh well.
Say, here's a gift for you~

"But you, beloved ones, building yourselves
up by your most holy faith, praying
in the Holy Spirit,
keep yourselves in the love of God,
eagerly awaiting the mercy of our Lord
Jesus Christ to everlasting life." Jude 1:20 & 21.

Derek Leaberry| 9.23.11 @ 8:43AM

Good to see that Gov. Open Borders Perry is getting a hiding on an issue where he shares George W. Bush's unpatriotic position. Sadly, it helps Mitt Romney. How can such a political party be so stupid to have as front-runners for nomination two men so undeserving of the office of president?

Stefan Stackhouse| 9.23.11 @ 9:40AM

If Newt had just beamed down from the heavens, he would be looking pretty good. Too bad he actually has a pretty unattractive backstory.

Mimi| 9.23.11 @ 9:57AM

Stefan...Newt has his past no argument on that...but , we have to become aware of his "NEW LIFE" with becoming a CATHOLIC CONVERT !
I'm sure he confessed and recieved ABSOLUTION and that's good enough for me! we are looking at a new NEWT...give him a break!

crazy| 9.23.11 @ 9:43AM

Perry's problem is not so much his positions as his explanations. Fencing the border sounds good but most of the Texas border is defined by the Rio Grande river. Both sides depend on the water so who gets it? Border control through enforcement worked for over 100 yrs it can work again if Washington stops hindering it.

In-state tuition rates for the children of illegals is a choice Texans made after Washington and the federal courts forced Texas to educate all children regardless of citizenship.

HPV - can't help him there. I suspect he was swinging for the fences and wanted to be the first to stop a cancer in its tracks and blew the politics of his ambitious choice big time.

Finally, as others have noted Perry's just not comfortable as an attack dog. None of this other stuff matters if he doesn't find a better way to deal with the criticism and potshots than just to stand his ground.

Mimi| 9.23.11 @ 10:01AM

Heh craz...He needs some "REAGAN " QUICKIES!

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.23.11 @ 10:00AM

Jeffrey
I wanted to make sure you saw this.

T Volunteer
Just some thoughts from a Texan on immigration. We have a LOT of fine multi-generation citizens of Texas with Hispanic backgrounds. As I have mentioned before, there were several Hispanics that fought INSIDE the Alamo. (to real Texans, that is a passport signed in blood, just like Davy Crocket’s).
A lot of those citizens have nephews and nieces whose parents have NO passports…from anywhere, but who live across the border.
Third, we did no “ethnic cleansing” when we won our independence from Mexico “Tex-Mex” is more than a mix of dishes to us. It is a huge part of our culture. (Well, we did shoot a lot of Comanches.)
Fourth, being a blue eyed Anglo, if I brought MY nephew across to save him from abject poverty…or even having been orphaned, no one would even lift an eyebrow. “Hell, Ken, it’s the Christian thing to do.”
Fifth, I began my “real career” working for a Japanese company. Many of my Japanese co-workers were here on long term “business visas”. Well a poor mixed blood, (Indian/Spanish) laborer doesn’t have the connections or the money to obtain those niceties.
The Japanese were welcomed if they worked for their own company. Gazillions of “undocumented aliens” have THEIR own businesses here. Heh, many of us practice “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”. Heck, my own lawn service may be one of those, and you know, I have NEVER had an Anglo knock on my door and ask me for my landscaping business.
Right or wrong, Volunteer, that is just the real world down here.
I know that Mr. Perry shares a lot of these thoughts…THAT’S WHY he probably believes the Federal government should enforce the borders…ALL the borders, with a workable guest-worker program. Heh, like Gingrich quipped: “Let Fed-Ex handle it.”
Seriously though, I hope you guys can forgive Mr. Perry for having mixed feelings. Hell, he grew up sharecropping a cotton farm. Some of the guys working right along side him in those cotton fields were probably “undocumented”, and chances are, some of them were childhood and lifetime friends.

Sean| 9.23.11 @ 10:06AM

Oh sure lets nominate someone who supports illegal aliens because he might of worked in a field with them. Guess what I live in Texas and a lot of us are tired of Perry facilitating illegal aliens just like the rest of the nation. This guys is suppose to be conservative yet California was tougher on illegal aliens. Perry also uses the phrases of the left calling conservatives "heartless", mandating big government "for the children."

Mimi| 9.23.11 @ 10:08AM

The BIG question here is....Will he follow the LAW ? Massive illegal immigration is destroying the country....! Rick Perry is honorable...we have to be convinced he will do right by this country!

martin j smith| 9.23.11 @ 11:20AM

Mr Lord "losing " a debate is not "losing" the big prize. I would like to be very careful before drawing conclusions because there is a large field and for everyone's sake lets see if at least one or more candidates can show leadership. I think it is important not only to compete among themselves but for candidates to a begin to publicly attack Obama individually on his failed policies but essentially offer an alternative view of how to fix our economy--and all the trimmings --
free market capitalism, American Exceptionalism
unity versus diversity. And of course end class warfare.

LarryK| 9.23.11 @ 11:45AM

Look, I understand what Perry was saying.

It is the Executive branch of the Federal Government that is constitutionally mandated to enforce the Federal Laws. If the Federal Government fails, what is the Governor to do?

I wish he'd mandate that illegal immigrant ADULT children of Illegal immigrant PARENTS pay the out of state tuition. Let them sue the state and see what happens.

Well, he chose the politically expedient course of action which isn't good in my opinion, but it beats the hell out of ObamaRomney care in Massachusetts.

The Republican party better listen, If the choice is MITT on my hands I'll sit!

Margie| 9.23.11 @ 1:38PM

So far Perry's coming off rather weak.
I'm for Herman Cain, and I'm continuing to pray for him that he leaves the others in the dust.
So far, so good.

freelife4uandme| 9.23.11 @ 3:35PM

WHO MADE RICK PERRY THE FRONT RUNNER ? IT WAS LIKE, I'M RUNNING ANNOUNCED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE IOWA STRAW POLL AND GOING FORWARD HE BECAME THE FRONT RUNNER. It's weird that Ron Paul supporters are accused of multiple voting in online POLLS which they only let you vote once, but often the results are yanked becasue the "Media Front Runner" didn't really win.

Are all the other candidates supporters so honest that they would never vote multiple times even if the POLL would let you, or is it that the others don't really have as much support as RON PAUL whether they vote once or could vote twice ?

Jay| 9.23.11 @ 8:18PM

Jeffrey Lord has so discredited himself with his lies and slander about Ron Paul, who could believe what he says about any other candidate? Lord being against Perry is a positive for Perry.
