Obama Plays to the Base

“[T]he millions of Americans who are watching right now: they don’t care about politics,” said President Obama near the beginning of his speech before Congress tonight. Nice little delusion, but people who don’t care about politics weren’t watching. And the speech wasn’t for them, anyway. This was a sop to the disillusioned liberals who complain in op-eds and blog posts that Obama just needs to get more aggressive in pushing for policies that they imagine will reinvigorate the economy. Politically, it was a move to rally a base that is rather depressed at the moment, and it might work somewhat. But the spectacle of demanding an audience from Congress for such a speech was utterly absurd.

For a rundown on the substance, see Phil Klein’s take.

Excuse me while I stall for time to figure out how to disavow the parts of the President's job proposal that were crafted by Republicans

Clint,
This is all you have to contribute to the national conversation? Shame.

I just keep bethinking myself of "the liberals". It's one thing to adore statist principles as well as to fashionably despise your country in the abstract and wish it ill. Or to still think that it's one of "your people" in the Oval Office and somehow he'll get you your forty acres and a Lexus...

It's quite another thing to be reminded that it's your country too and when it goes down, you're going down with it along with all those people you love to hate. Just how many democrat voters out there still consider themselves "recession proof" as well as hyper-inflation proof and Obamacare proof and c.? Will they cheer and salute his cortege from the breadlines and tent cities?

Mike are you there? What is your situation? Are you living in a hilltop fortress surrounded by gold bullion? Or do you really think Obama will save the day if only he doubles down once again?

What a waste of a presidency.

People like Mike really believe that their cause is social justice and those on the Left are sincerely trying to make a better America. He is one of the groomed useful idiots that you will never convince otherwise as he has completely accepted and internalized some basic assumptions (lies) about the world.

The first is that there is an infinite amount of money(wealth) out there and the rich have most of it. The second is that government is the only means by which a fair redistribution of that wealth can happen.

Both are the essential underpinnings of his philosophy and both are the biggest lies ever told.

Simon --

You have wasted a lot of time on "Mike" and those like him. It is really quite simple: Mike wants to live the good life and he thinks he doesn't need to work for it and that YOU and I should pay for it. He hasn't gone too deep into the "abstractions."

I spent five hours with liberals with whom I am related -- both by marriage and blood. They don't pay attention to the news and have no idea what the heck is going on. One works for the government and one teaches school. Need I say more?

Why would anyone have watched this campaign speach. I, instead, went out for a wonderful dinner and some really nice wine with my beautiful wife. I didn't waste my time tonight!

Obama is one of my favorite politician, i think people don't like nasty politics. But they want to see legal politics so that people survive well.
