The Spectacle Blog

I just watched President Obama's address before a joint session of Congress.

I'll say this much for Obama. He was full of piss and vinegar.

But that said he can say "pass this jobs bill" or "pass it right away" to his heart's content but the devil is in the details. We cannot have another Obamacare where Congress has to pass the bill before we know what's in it. How is the federal government going to be in any better position to create jobs in the manufacturing jobs now than it did when it gave Solyndra $585 million to create so-called "green jobs" two years ago at a cost of about $1 million a job?

President Obama was also trying to have his cake and eat it. He gave the appearance of embracing ideas endorsed by Republicans at one moment (i.e. payroll tax cuts) and then hatcheted up the class warfare rhetoric seconds later (i.e. tax breaks for millionaires/billionaires or putting teachers back to work.)

So it's probably just as well that there's no official Republican response. But if the GOP is going to oppose Obama's job bill they had better put forth a viable alternative to it especially in the event Obama should manage to gain traction from it.

Show me your jobs bill. Let's see your Debt Ceiling Plan. Where are your School Transcripts, your Medical Records, your Scholarship Papers, your grades, your PASSPORT, and your Social Security Number?
He has to go.
Someone needs to "TAKE OUT this Son Of A Bitch and give us back the America where we belong."
Right, Jimmy?

Excuse me while I stall for time to figure out how to disavow the parts of the President's job proposal that were crafted by Republicans

beebop| 9.8.11 @ 8:54PM

He needs to focus less on his pomp and more on our circumstance.

Mike| 9.8.11 @ 8:56PM

beebop,

You need to bring something to the table.

No, Aaron, the Republicans should NOT put forward an alternative bill. Government "acting" is the problem, not the solution. Playing a game of "My planned economy can beat your planned economy" is just plain stupid. The economy will not recover until government gets out of the way.

PCC| 9.8.11 @ 11:41PM

An excellent point, Grant.

GOP should embrace a pro-growth plan that mainly comsists of less regulation, no new taxes and more certainty regarding future tax rates.

GOP should also embrace the Ryan plan to put the federal government on a path to solvency.

Finally, on foreign policy, bring the troops home at the earliest possible date.

That's a winning political platform, and a winning plan for our country.

Yes, Aaron, you are spot on. This whole fiasco and performance was a set up...you do not have to be a political analyst working in DC to figure that out.

So, the question remains. How will the GOP handle this manipulation?

Simon Templar| 9.9.11 @ 12:24AM

Screw his bill. There will never be one. Make damn sure that you have a bill and solid ideas and make damn sure the general public sees you put it forth.
Can you handle that Boehner?

ggoblue| 9.9.11 @ 5:21AM

we already did pass a jobs bill. the budget passed by the house includes the ryan plan. that budget would put the nation on the road to recovery.

PCC| 9.9.11 @ 7:58AM

BTW, whether Dem or GOP, can we please stop with "temporary" or "extended" policies that merely prolong investment uncertainty?

The so-called "Bush tax cuts" should never have been time limited, and of course these "extended" payroll tax cuts are equally absurd.

Of course any policy can be amended in the future, but whether it's estate taxes, or payroll taxes, or unemployment benefits, or any other fiscal policy, please don't burden them with the seeds of their own destruction.

I don't like the popular vulgar phrase "grow a pair", but our politicians, on either side of the aisle, should do so for the benefit of our economy, and for the benefit of our country.
