Perry Wins

For a first time out in the circus, Texas Governor Rick Perry impressed in tonight's Reagan Library debate.

I have no favorites here. Even Congressman Ron Paul, of whom (ahem), I've been critical, did well. There's a long way to go. The object is to find the absolute best candidate and remove President Obama and the disastrous (surprise!) policies that have failed the country with such dismal if predictable results.

As someone unfamiliar with Perry?

He was… on first sustained let's-get-acquainted?

Well… Reaganesque.

A winner? A long time out, though, before we arrive in that port of call.

But Perry is utterly not the image the left-wing media has been trying so hard to paint. He was substantive, thoughtful yet pointed.

Specifically, he reminded of Reagan in the Reagan-Carter debate, where the challenge was almost the same: a candidate proving he wasn't some sort of crazed cowboy.

Mission accomplished.

Which in turn says… the liberal media has reason to be concerned about Governor Perry.

Would this have anything to do with left-wing media hysteria over Perry?

Hmmmmmm.

Interesting how, instead of discussing the validity of someone's ideas, your first instinct to determine whether or not you approve of them in a general sense is to compare them to a personal authority figure. You're like a young child who knows no other manner of obtaining belief and opinion about the world around him than blind obedience and submission to Daddy.

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 12:34AM

Once again, for someone using the Name of God, you sure don't know Him.

Because if you did, you'd know that He purposely arranged it for little children to learn about belief in both God and what is good or evil, from their Daddies.

Maybe you didn't have such a Dad. I pity you. You need to learn of the true God and eternal life.

God| 9.8.11 @ 12:40AM

Margie, stop being a false Christian and going around proclaiming the name of a God whose commandments you consistently and clearly violate.

God doesn't want you to be lazy and to have blind faith in a political party or person who lords his or her meaningless and arbitrary sense of authority over you.

You are a false Christian, Margie. I will pray for your soul.

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 12:42AM

God does not listen to the so called prayer of other false gods, sorry.

God| 9.8.11 @ 12:58AM

Your evil, hypocritical, deceitful, slothful ways are unbecoming of the saved, Margie.

May the Lord have mercy upon you, and may you one day come to repent and be washed clean with the blood of the Lamb. You know not the extent of your sins, Margie, but God knows all and you will one day be judged for your crimes against your brothers and sisters.

Simon Templar| 9.8.11 @ 1:17AM

Do not take the name of the Lord in vain.

Your phony pompous ass forgot about that one, eh?

God| 9.8.11 @ 1:23AM

As angry and desperate as you must be, Simon, it's surprising to see the product of your efforts fall so far short of significance.

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.8.11 @ 8:00AM

Goody,
Margie is just like the rest of us Christians... a sinner saved by Grace.
I'm gonna' sin now: Kiss my nether parts. She is a good woman. Go pick up the "stone" you threw.

Mimi| 9.8.11 @ 8:33AM

We forgive you ! BRAVO !!

Simon Templar| 9.8.11 @ 11:51AM

Simon Templar| 9.8.11 @ 12:04PM

Well, you should know as you have been undermining them since day one.

We also know how the story ends with you in the lake of fire forever..forever vanquished and put away.

God| 9.8.11 @ 3:43PM

Evidence?

Oh, right, your beliefs, both religious and political, are nothing more than anti-intellectual sentiments. Evidence and rational thought are irrelevant to your worldview.

beebop| 9.8.11 @ 5:07AM

I think "false Christian" is way out of line. You are disgusting. And? I doubt if you actually know what a soul is.

God| 9.8.11 @ 3:42PM

You're a false Christian, beebop.

"Ye shall know them by their fruits".

Your fruits are rotten, beebop. You are an atrocious sinner and a false prophet. You will burn in hell forever.

Occam's Tool| 9.8.11 @ 7:58PM

First of all, use G-d. I always do.

Second, stop pickin' on the ladies. Only a lowlife picks on the ladies. Especially two of my favorites.

Joseph| 9.8.11 @ 10:45PM

Why us G-d instead of God.

Occam's Tool| 9.21.11 @ 11:45AM

Dear Joseph,

Read the ten commandments and find out why.

God| 9.8.11 @ 11:30PM

Your not safe just because you have a gaping cunt, Occam's.

Occam's Tool| 9.21.11 @ 11:44AM

Occam's Tool| 9.21.11 @ 11:46AM

By the way, Ba'al---it's "you're not safe."

Sean| 9.8.11 @ 9:35AM

Margie is just an anti-Catholic bigot.

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 4:49PM

LOL. Actaully, Catholicism is extremely bigoted against Bible believing Christians.
If you recall, they tortured and put them to death for about 600 years.
Why? Because they refused to acknowledge the unbiblical false teachings of the Papists.
Are you representing the Religion, Sean?
Seems to me an awful lot of your ilk does here.
I wonder why.

God| 9.8.11 @ 4:52PM

In the name of our Holy Father, begone thou whore of Babylon!!!!

Simon Templar| 9.8.11 @ 12:29PM

Hey, GODLESS,

I read again your comment:
"Interesting how, instead of discussing the validity of someone's ideas, your first instinct to determine whether or not you approve of them in a general sense is to compare them to a personal authority figure. You're like a young child who knows no other manner of obtaining belief and opinion about the world around him than blind obedience and submission to Daddy."

LOL. Wow. TOTAL PROJECTION. JUST LIKE A LIBERAL. It really is amazing.

You are exactly describing yourself and your blind obedience and worship of all things Ron Paul to a tee, your personal authority figure on everything.

God| 9.8.11 @ 3:40PM

You didn't even defend yourself, dumbshit. You just talked past the accusation in order to avoid even thinking about it.

Typical religious moron, raised to be a submissive little shit to pastors and politicians. Disgusting.

Simon Templar| 9.11.11 @ 10:58AM

Jackasses who use the name of God as a moniker, quote from scripture like Satan, mock religion while using religion to make their inane points, spew their filthy mouth with explicatives, and live in intellectual glass houses really should not throw stones. Now, that is the definition of disgusting.

Bob K.| 9.7.11 @ 11:44PM

Reaganesque? Are we going to read about this now from all you pundits when you talk of Perry? Is this the best you can do? Can't he run on his own merits?

God| 9.8.11 @ 1:38AM

Yes, Bob, it is the absolute best that they can do. Rather than discussing the relevant issues at hand that will determine the very fate of our decaying country, appealing to the submissive nature of their audience that screams "Lead me!!!!" by equating a candidate with a party idol is the most they have to offer.

More sad is the fact that, on many, this emotional appeal will work flawlessly.

PCC| 9.7.11 @ 11:44PM

Forget the psychobabble, I agree with Mr. Lord.

I've been skeptical of Perry from the beginning and have held a slightly negative view of him for no particular reason.

He spoke sensibly and well in the debate this evening and I'm now much more comfortable with him.

The GOP has got some fine candidates, any number of whom can defeat Obama, and one of whom will.

Let's not tear ourselves apart too much in the primary process, and let's keep our eye on defeating Obama in 2012.

DRed| 9.7.11 @ 11:48PM

Good luck taking Florida with a candidate who will be painted as wanting to get rid of social security.

beebop| 9.8.11 @ 5:10AM

He is not talking about getting rid of anything. If you listened he was merely stating the obvious.

And Ron Paul? I'm from Ohio so we know kooks (Dennis the Menace, anyone?) But how people actually come to take him seriously?

Why did Michelle Bachman never look at the others on the dias? She stared straight ahead and was only engaged when she was answering questions. I found it very unsettling.

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 4:52PM

Greetings from a soon to be fellow Ohioan, beebop!

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 12:34AM

Well said, PCC! I'm with you.

Spartanfan| 9.8.11 @ 12:01AM

You forgot your "Sarcasm" notation...

John Barton| 9.7.11 @ 11:55PM

The truth is that the liberals are hoping, even praying (if they prayed) that Perry will be the nominee. With the economy as bad as it is, it is the only real shot they have of getting Obama back in the White House.
Perry is a general election dream come true for the Democrats. He's perfect for the far right, but way too extreme for the voters in the all important swing states-Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, Virginia, and similar states where people actually read occasionally. And now, he's probably finished in Florida where those old voters actually take their social security pretty seriously. I don't think even the Republicans are inept enough to nominate this former cheerleader (oh, I forgot so was George W.) with a D+ grade point average from a second-rate school (Texas A & M) who believes the earth was formed 6,000 years ago, social security is a Ponzi scheme, and US senators shouldn't be elected by the voters. This guy carries a lot of really heavy political baggage-and the Dems will beat him over the head with it at every turn.

Dai Alanye| 9.8.11 @ 12:12AM

I hope Barton is aware of what a Ponzi scheme is. The name perfectly describes Social Security as it was set up by Roosevelt and his advisers. They planned it as a Ponzi scheme from the start, and only a sequence of tax increases have kept it from going under.

Now whether we should SAY it's a Ponzi scheme is another matter, I admit.

beebop| 9.8.11 @ 5:12AM

Where exactly are obama's grades? They have had four years to sneak them into the computer to replace the "incompletes" -- the college version of voting "present." Fact is, you only think 0bama is smart because the media tells you he is. He has shown absoltely zero evidence that he is.

JGwen| 9.8.11 @ 10:42AM

Re Social Security, as a still working and paying in recipient, it IS and was designed as a Ponzi scheme! To add insult to injury it was expanded to cover the disabled and dependents. Now it has been raided to fund other priorities. In that we are MORE than Taxed Enough Already, to say it can be "fixed" borders on naive. I noted last year the progressives generated some reaction from the youth, by intimating that the old people were robbing them and needed to be gotten out of the way. It resonated for a while and then got shut down. Don't be surprised if it resurfaces. It is in "Senior's" interests, as well as the interests of youth and the Nation to pull this issue into the light of day and get it addressed. Ryan's budget put one approach on the table. In view of our advancing Budgetary/DEBT crisis the sooner real solutions are generated the better!

To say there are more moneys/revenues that can be readily generated to address Social Security's expanding shortfalls would be reprehensible!

Mike 3/505| 9.7.11 @ 11:56PM

I was extremely gratified to hear a top tier presidential candidate say what I have been saying for years...Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme! Huzzah!

Regards,

Mike

Clint| 9.8.11 @ 12:01AM

Dr. Ron Paul said: “You know, the governor of Texas [Perry] criticized the governor of Massachusetts [Romney] for RomneyCare. But he wrote a really fancy letter supporting HillaryCare. So we probably ought to ask him about that.”

The Letter:

"In a letter to Clinton, who is now U.S. Secretary of State, Perry wrote: “I think your efforts in trying to reform the nation’s health care system are most commendable.”

“I would like to request that the task force give particular consideration to the needs of the nation’s farmers, ranchers, and agriculture workers, and other members of rural communities,” Perry continued, noting his administration’s focus on economic development for rural Texans. “Rural populations have a high proportion of uninsured people, rising health care costs, and often experience lack of services.”

“Again, your efforts are worthy,” Perry concluded, ”and I hope you will remember this constituency as the task force progresses.”

JGwen| 9.8.11 @ 10:54AM

As the newly elected Agricultural Commissioner, that said Commissioner would call the attention of the then Administration to request they be sure to address the needs of his constituency is commendable.

To assume he was aware, at the point he wrote the letter in question, of what Clinton's actual goals were - that HillaryCare would be similar to the ObamaCare socialized healthcare nightmare that has been foisted upon us, is too much of a stretch to be credible!

JGwen| 9.8.11 @ 10:54AM

I was unimpressed by Perry, finding him weaker than expected. He showed little intellectual heft nor was he grounded in a solid political philosophy. His responses to criticisms and attacks tended to be weakly reasoned and all too snarky.

Gingrich did a good job, and will make some President a fine adviser.
Santorum did fairly well although his choice of arguments depended too much on what he did in the past, and this election is about the future.
Huntsman improved from last time, no longer rating a negative number. Still a jerk, however.
Bachmann looks less impressive with each exposure, but maybe that's just me.
Cain was solid, but lucky that few questions were about military of foreign policy.
Ron Paul was not too bad except when he brought up the fantasy about the fence keeping us in. What a goof!
Romney steadily maintained his conservative and highly-presidential persona. My only regret is that I know it's a facade.

God| 9.8.11 @ 1:03AM

On the contrary, Ron Paul appears to be the only candidate aware of the extent to which government power has been abused not only throughout human history, but within the last century. That, or he's the only candidate capable of forming a political stance grounded in reality and rational analysis.

Simon Templar| 9.8.11 @ 1:20AM

They actually have concrete ideological reasons for trying to get the man in the white house, unlike the neo-con idiots whose entire decision process is based on blind faith and emotion.

God| 9.8.11 @ 11:37PM

Occam's, sweetie pie, are you such an imbecile that the use of multiple commas --a simple, standard, useful piece of punctuation-- adds a level of grammatical complexity to a sentence that makes it incomprehensible to your feeble and simple mind?

You're clearly desperate to respond to me. What's unexpected is that your chosen line of defense, even when empowered by your desperation and need, is to outright imply that your stupidity is as extreme as it appears upon first impression.

No. It just demonstrates a lack of clear logic on your part to use unnecessarily complex sentences.

I recognize one's assessments depend on one's own philosophies. On the other hand it is shortsighted to underestimate those with whom you evidently disagree ... in fact a bit old line elitist.

Governor/Candidate Perry has received kudos for his monetary assessment acumen from credible sources:

wsj - Perry's Public Service
Behold, a hard-money Texas politician
“The real news ...(is)...the substance and politics of Mr. Perry's demarche. Here we have a Presidential candidate, a Texas populist no less, laying out a position in favor of sound money. This is a bear walking on its hind legs. The ghosts of Wright Patman and Henry B. Gonzalez are howling in the Hill Country.

PULL QUOTE from Perry’s Red-Hot Bernanke Slam, A Commentary By Lawrence Kudlow: So it turns out that Governor Perry -- even with his overly strong language -- is a pretty sharp economic and monetary analyst.

Don't sell his capacities short!

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 12:41AM

Mr. Lord,

I agree with you about Perry. In fact, my Dad, a life long Democrat who is in favor of the death penalty, respects honest, upfront men. He says he will always vote for Dems in the local elections, but he will vote for a Republican President.

I do believe Rick Perry is someone he would cast his vote for.
He abhors Obama, and he abhorred Clinton, too.
Well done, Mr. Perry.

Scott| 9.8.11 @ 4:19AM

While Perry gave some good answers, that painfully awful response on climate change has me dreading the thought of Perry being the nominee. He had to know that was coming and yet he was utterly unprepared for it and looked like a complete incompetent. One response like that in a debate with Obama and we're getting four more years. I don't think we should risk it.

Bob Grant| 9.8.11 @ 9:06AM

I completely agree. Not only was his initial response the the Global Warming question disastrous, he chose to re-visit the question a few minutes later with the EXACT disastrous response.

This clearly was the weak point for him. His record/history of climate change and alternative energy as Governor is all over the place; it's very inconsistent. He is a huge supporter of wind farm subsidies and other green technologies so he can, if he chooses, position himself as a supporter of alternative energy under certain circumstances and doesn't have to appear as some troglodyte on the issue.

Politically speaking, he does not handle this issue well.

JGwen| 9.8.11 @ 11:26AM

Having been unable to hear the full discussion, I would advance the contention that there is global warming (any more than a few years ago it was global cooling), anthropogenic or otherwise has been effectively discredited.

We need to be taking steps to facilitate continuing Commercially Viable Energy operations today!

My understanding is that Texas has been meeting acceptable air quality standards, albeit not the way the EPA dictates.

That Texas has in place standard energy sources and alternative ("Green") energy sources should be heartening to both camps.

I have been opposing Tax/Rate Payer funding (for the next 25 years) of Wind Power in my State. There is no excuse, particularly in the present economic circumstances, to forcibly/legislatively saddle State tax AND Rate Payers with the cost of (read profits to favored "investors") energy, that would readily available from more cost effective sources!

NO ONE who "believes - ?" in these "Green" scams can hope to get my vote!

aware| 9.8.11 @ 6:25AM

"Mission accomplished."

Where have I heard that before? Yeah, Perry is certainly a superior Statist to your former love Santorum. No wonder he wowed you. But I thought your attack dog was supposed to tear Paul apart. Disappointed?

martin j smith| 9.8.11 @ 7:56AM

I did not watch the debate but have heard many views on it. My main problem is having a MSM pro-Socialist media ) manage it. Sorry but I think that is a bad idea but no matter. The issue of r me is to produce a winner against Obama and it will not be based on one ,two or whatever debates. It will depend on someone not sounding like a "bumper sticker". The best thing would be for debates to be hosted by TALK RADIO HOSTS.
Another point is these debates should not have the purpose of each candidates "killing off" each other and ultimately lead to their total destruction
at our expense.
I have no favorite but am skeptical of all. I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT VOTE FOR RON PAUL--voting for him is like voting for Obama at least on national security and foreign affairs--he is OUT.
The question is to watch how the media ( MSM as well as conservatives so to speak ) distort or in other ways spin this debate. This will give us a clue as to what manipulation games are going on.
Realistically in the end we will get who we get but it might be worth while when primaries come around to be more organized as o who to lean towards if there is agreement or at least to lean against. Can we see thru the manipulation and vote our will-? Time will tell.

Clint| 9.8.11 @ 8:14AM

Perry is a plastic opportunist, who is now parroting what Dr.Ron Paul has been saying for years.

Are you still in favor of abolishing Social Security?
Dr.Ron Paul,
A: Yes, but not overnight. As a matter of fact, my program’s the only one that is going to be able to take care of the elderly. I’d like to get the young people out of it, just the younger generation, because there’s no money there, and they’re going to have to pay 50 years and they’re not going to get anything. I’d take care of all the elderly, all those who are dependent, but I would save the money from this wild spending overseas.

75---qualifies for Medicare. Pay for it by eliminating overseas spending---overseas spending is too small a part of the budget to do that.

Try to keep up, Ba'al. My mind encompasses yours, as yours is but 302 neurons in size.

JimH| 9.8.11 @ 8:31AM

I did not see the whole thing so I may have missed significant parts. From what I did see, if I had no prior knowledge of any of the candidates I’d say that Newt impressed me the most, with Cain second. If Cain is not nominated he ought to be VP or at least have a significant role in the campaign. I thought Huntsman was doing well until he started blathering about how we ought to believe the scientists. Bachmann was toned down and had her facts straight. I think Paul spoke as well as can be expected in this format. He does not thrive amidst short sound bites. Unfortunately appearances count for a lot on TV and Paul does not come across well. Perry and Romney are almost too good looking. Romney spoke well, but he looks like Metroman from the movie Megamind. I think Perry in terms of appearance and persona is the closest thing we are likely to have to the Gipper. Pretty much all the candidates would do well to say less in their allotted times, rather than try to rapidly blurt their answers. When reading the replies it may be ok but it doesn’t look good on TV. As Newt said they were all much better than the current resident of the White House.

Margie| 9.8.11 @ 5:03PM

I love Herman Cain. LOL, have I said that before?
I will settle for Rick Perry though. :^).
Michele is wonderful too.
Newt COULD make a great President if he carried out his righteous conservative ideas.. but too many people have already rejected him, I think. I would happily cast my vote for him.
Romney, not so much. NO to Ron Paul and/or that other guy.
Last but not least~ Rick Santorum is GREAT too.

Face it folks, we have all the good guys on our side!!

As Margie put it, except for the potheads and pothead supporters (Paul, and the Clown from New Mexico), I like the Republican candidates. I would prefer Michele, but the others are acceptable, except as noted.

God| 9.8.11 @ 11:55PM

Of course you would prefer Michele. The other men scare you with their perfectly-normal masculine qualities, but Michele, although you look to her both as your patriarch and your matriarch, seems softer and less likely to make you insecure with her presence.

Quit being redundant, Occam's.

Leave the analyzing of motives to the professionals, Ba'al.

Governor Perry was composed and despite having to deal with the devastating wildfires ,
he clearly arrived ready for the debate.
Perry could not be cowed by the moderators
and the meme of the liberal press.
An example was when Perry discussed Barack Obama's breezy declaration that the border at El Paso was safer than ever.
Perry's retort that Obama either had awful intel or was an abject liar was hilarious.
Perry's stand up response to Brian William's hand wringing execution question was superb.
Perry told the truth about Social Security and
stressed that without reform,
it won't be there for the younger workers.
Romney and Perry did not take the NBC bait and attack each other and in fact,
both had moments of respectful
graciousness towards each other.
Newt is a smart policy wonk with too much personal baggage , but, he adds to the discourse.
Bachmann seemed slightly lost , but, she also
adds to the discussion
The rest-not so much.
Especially cranky Ron Paul.
The biggest loser last night was
Barack Obama .
The thought of running against either Perry or Romney should be giving him sleepless nights.

You have got to be kidding promoting Perry as Reagan-anything. His record of big government violatons of the rule of law have Regan spinning in his grave.

When I first started reading comments on this site, I was impressed by the thoughtful people posting here. This has become nothing but a war of words between mainly juvenile, insulting, profane and silly posters. Not worth my time. Seems like many of you don't have enough to do.

God| 9.8.11 @ 11:59PM

Agreed, Mary. Occam's is a juvenile, silly, cowardly, submissive, and repulsive idiot.

I apologize for his existence, as would his parents and the doctor who delivered him were they were to comment.

Occam's Tool| 9.8.11 @ 8:12PM

Mary:

I'm sorry about my more juvenile comments. Writing on a site that has Clint on it is problematic. They banned him as Tim.* Why they let him come back as "Clint" I have no idea.

However, bounce a reasonable comment and you will see many thoughtful posters---Ken, Margie, Simon, John II, STUART KOEHL (the real deal), RCV, Con Chef, Nick, Al Adab, Irish 19, Mike Tomlinson, and many more. Don't give up on us simply because I'm a silly ass.

Joseph| 9.8.11 @ 10:49PM

Mary, anyone who is for Israel is good for Occam Tool, doesn't matter what else they say.

Occam's Tool| 9.21.11 @ 11:53AM

Not true. Don't care for Dershowitz.

God| 9.8.11 @ 11:58PM

Christ, Occam's, you are one unbelievable pussy. Apologizing to a bunch of strangers for something you deliberately did less than a few minutes ago, and will continue to do some more?

In other words, you're not even a strong enough human being to fall in line with your own standards. Even when you feel ashamed of your behavior, you're too weak to resist it.

Both by your own as well as everyone else's standards, you are a disgusting failure and an absolute abomination of evolution.

Mary Mother of God| 9.28.11 @ 12:04AM

You're an asshole.
