Powell’s Perfidy

In the matter of Richard Armitage, Scooter Libby — and Dick Cheney’s criticism of Powell for his actions therein — I join Jen Rubin in once again setting the record straight.  Read all about it here. Colin Powell’s reputation deserves to be permanently sullied.

It seems to me that Mr. Powell has decided to go over to the dark side. And because of that he will be welcomed to all of the various talk shows so he can rip Bush and his "people".

Bob K.| 8.29.11 @ 1:10PM

Bush didn't help matters here either. He could have pardoned Libby but didn't. Armitage and Powell will use this fact in their defense of this accusation.

Sadly, Colin Powell's elevation to Chief-of-Staff by Ronald Reagan was one of Dutch's big mistakes. All presidents make them.

WilliamR| 8.29.11 @ 1:56PM

Powell was Reagan's National Security Adviser not Chief of Staff

Derek Leaberry| 8.29.11 @ 2:07PM

Thanks for the editing!!!

Powell preferred to play D.C. backstabbing games and racquetball with Prince Bandar to doing his job as Secretary of State, resulting in Turkey not allowing the U.S. to invade Iraq from her territory as planned. The insurgency never would have come off had the two-pronged attack envisioned gone into effect.

Teflon93| 8.29.11 @ 1:47PM

And how much of a dirtbag was Democrat DA Patrick Fitzgerald, who KNEW Armitage leaked Plame's name and yet went on with his fraud of an investigation in an effort to snare an innocent man who happened to support the "wrong" political party?

WilliamR| 8.29.11 @ 1:55PM

No Quin, Cheney needs to be read out of polite society

What more is there to that story? I see it's three years old, and don't recall any further comment at the time or since. Admittedly, I don't follow the "Cheney needs to read out of polite society" scene too closely, but I don't even recall Dick Armey making a fuss about this, nor his book making a commotion.

I suppose it's part of the missing WMD narrative, but is there more there than that?

Finally, wholly conceding that VP Cheney could be thoroughly wrong about that, in what sense does that explain Sec. Powell's actions? I miss the connection there.

Beyond this issue, the defining issue with Powell for me was his politically correct support of Obama for president over McCain. Powell would never become a houshold name politically if not for Reagan and GHWB's gracious and kindly mentoring of him both militarily and politically. In his political support of Democrat Obama, it was a completely humiliating slap in the face to former presidents and to their Republican Party who had provided his notoriety. Any why did he so politically support Obama? I think we all [should] know why [and it ain't because of Obama's smile, that's for sure]. It's sadly the same old story of affirmative action works fine until the bullets start flying, then it all comes down to the color of one's skin, right???????

Wayne | 8.29.11 @ 2:32PM

But would you vote for Powell if he ran on the GOP ticket?

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 3:10PM

ABSOLUTELY NOT! [and neither would I vote for his BROTHER, and I did not do so in 2008]!!!!

Occam's Tool| 8.29.11 @ 2:34PM

General Powell had physical courage; of that there is no doubt. Moral courage, however, is apparently severely lacking. And that is much rarer---see Mark Twain on this.

Conclusion: All apparent gravitas, but no actual gravity.

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 3:14PM

I'll repsectfully disagree, since IMO he has neither. He'd be working at McD's after an insignificant army career, if not for Reagan and the Bushes. If he was going to politically support anyone in 2008, it should have been McCain, a fellow military man, instead of that worthless community organizer turned trojun-horsed president!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 3:17PM

PS: Powell is about as distinguished militarily speaking as is Wesley Clark IMHO [and in those of many many former military members as well]!!!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 4:08PM

PS: Think no doubt Dick Cheney nailed Powell in his current book from recent reports on same so far. Can't wait to read same!!!!

CalMark| 8.29.11 @ 4:47PM

Powell was a purely political general. His only loyalty was to his career.

He was just one of a long, long line of spineless four-star famous-for-being-a-military-celebrity sellouts. That line continues today.

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 4:56PM

And to think that Norman Swartzkolf had to take military orders from him!!!!!!!!

William R| 8.30.11 @ 9:01AM

Well Oldefarte, Colin Powell sure knew what he was doing in Iraq

Occam,

How do I treat Colon Bowel disease?

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 7:55PM

Use an ENEMA BAG and grab hold to something structurally sound!!!!!

Bob Grant| 8.29.11 @ 8:11PM

would obama and the Constitution suffice?

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 3:24PM

[This is unrelated, but in an indirect way, it is so]

BREAKING NEWS:

'.......Obama's Uncle -- An Illegal — Arrested for Drunk Driving Monday, August 29, 2011 02:41 PMBy: Martin Gould...The drunk driving arrest of President Barack Obama’s uncle has thrown the White House’s new immigration policies straight into the spotlight. Now GOP politicians and immigration policy groups are vowing to keep a close eye on the case of Onyango Obama, who is being held in custody as there is a warrant already out ordering his deportation to Kenya.
“We will be watching this case very carefully,” Ira Mehlman, spokesman for FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told Newsmax. “He was already under a deportation order so it raises the question of why he was he still here?”And freshman Republican Rep. Joe Walsh said, “This is the height of irony. Just a couple of weeks after the president sends out an executive order his uncle, who shouldn’t be here in the first place, gets arrested. “The timing is just exquisite, the Illinois congressman told Newsmax.“They said 300,000 cases would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Is this guy on that list and who is going to be looking at his case? I trust it is not the president. There could be a massive conflict of interest here.” Onyango Obama was arrested on August 24 outside the Chicken Bone Saloon in Framingham, Mass. after nearly hitting a police patrol car as he went through a stop sign. Tests showed his blood alcohol level was nearly double the legal limit. He was held in detention when police learned about the deportation order. When told he could make one phone call, he said “I think I should call the White House.”The case has received little media attention in the United States although it was widely covered in both Britain and Australia.....'

Eisenhower| 8.29.11 @ 3:32PM

Powell reputation is only sullied by his connection to the Bush Administration in the public mind, but his leaving before Bush's second term minimized that damage. The Libby case no one in the public really understood fully, and the little that they did understand was influenced/and shaped by the media, Valerie Plame, and Bush's refusal to pardon him. His public reputation like it or not will not be shaped by any Iraq War Hawks/former Bush officials, or conservatives, but by the media, and Powell-fans who still wish he ran back in 96.

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 4:03PM

The only RUNNING he was ever capable of was to Chicago to kiss Obama's ring [ot possibly something else]!!!!

martin j smith| 8.29.11 @ 3:44PM

Colin Powell seems more at home in the Socialist Party. I say that is fine let him join that party and then we have a clear picture of Colin Powell.

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 4:04PM

Nah, he's a DEMOCRAT for sure.....he came OUT OF HIS CLOSET prior to 11/4/08!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.29.11 @ 4:06PM

PS: His RACIALLY BIASED CLOSET is what he emerged from!!!!!!!!

Kent Lyon| 8.29.11 @ 4:38PM

So, why is no one calling for the prosecution of Powell and Armitage for obstruction of justice? Then or now? Justice has not been served. Justice has been denied.

CalMark| 8.29.11 @ 4:52PM

Point taken.

But if Bush didn't go after the crooked DA Kennedy and didn't give Libby a pardon, there's no reason to go after Powell and Armitage, whose crime was standing silently by.

None of these men will be remembered kindly by history. In fact, historians (real ones, not the Democrat mouthpieces who publish revisionist trash today) will be shocked at the viciously amoral goons who have been running our government for the last few decades. And that includes Powell, Armitage, and others of their ilk.

Seek| 8.29.11 @ 4:56PM

Colin Powell? No thanks. I'll take Enoch Powell.

Bob Grant| 8.29.11 @ 7:33PM

Rush Limbaugh has Colin Powell dead to rights. Colin Powell is all about the Colin Powell brand. Everything else is secondary.

It doesn't surprise me he left folks in the Bush white house hang out to dry as he knew all along who the leaker was.

What a snake. Ask John McCain (a snake in his own right) what kind of snake he really is.
