The Spectacle Blog

The American Spectator offices have survived an earthquake of up to 5.9 on the richter scale. Everyone is fine, though there are reports of jammed phone lines and naturally the government is evacuating.

No word yet on whether this was divine retribution against the D.C. political class or simply the thunderous response by Ron Paul supporters to Jeff Lord's column today.

Hope everyone is well. 5.9 isn't a very big.

daboss| 8.23.11 @ 2:55PM

we felt it all the way in Akron, Ohio.

Ammo Guy| 8.23.11 @ 3:01PM

I was in a meeting on the 12th floor of a building in Alexandria and I gotta tell you that if 5.9 "isn't very big" then I don't ever want to see anything north of 6.0. Man, we were rocking and rolling - reminded me of being at the Pentagon on 9/11 with everyone pouring out into the parking lot wondering what was going on.

Don't ever move to California then.

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 8.23.11 @ 3:46PM

An Earthquake would be the least of California's problems today!!

Ammo Guy| 8.23.11 @ 8:06PM

Not to worry - no chance of that.

The Clintidote| 8.23.11 @ 5:28PM

I just hope the quake was strong enough to do Americans some good.

Wayne | 8.23.11 @ 2:51PM

Well, now Obama has an excuse for the poor economy this quarter.

Al Adab| 8.23.11 @ 2:52PM

Mene, Mene Tekel Uparshim?
Makes one wonder.

Or was it Bush's fault (pun intended)?

Tina B| 8.23.11 @ 5:59PM

Al,

Yep, it's Washington D.C.s new Bush faultline. (even better pun intended)

Al Wilson| 8.23.11 @ 2:58PM

BREAKING. Obama says economic recovery could be delayed because of earthquake...

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 8.23.11 @ 3:06PM

According to the news reports so far, the Earthquake could be felt from the Carolinas, all the way up to Martha’s Vineyard. The reports are saying it was a 5.8 on the Richter Scale, centered somewhere in Virginia, which is a very powerful quake for the East Coast, the largest I’ve ever heard about. Wow!!

So the hits just keep on coming today!! The President hits a "New Low" for his Presidency on Rasmussen, with a -26 (That's Negative Twenty Six) approval rating, and on the same day a powerful Earthquake hits the Washington D.C. area. Could there be a connection? Is this just a coincidence? I don’t know!! But my guess is, it was First Lady Michele Obama, pissed off at the poll results today, throwing a temper tantrum, and probably blaming the Tea Party for it. And because of this poll, she's once again not feeling very proud of her Country (now don't you feel bad?).

I hope everybody's okay out there!!

Nothing to see here folks, just a little 'Fracking' accident...
No really thou, it's just Chuck Norris 'Falcon Punching' the Earth for tripping him.

Too Many Tims| 8.23.11 @ 3:34PM

All that debt piling up finally broke something.

Wayne | 8.23.11 @ 3:39PM

I have already been seeing the fault being named Bush's Fault.

Tina B| 8.23.11 @ 6:02PM

Oh, Wayne, you beat me buy 2 hours and 20 minutes. (see above)

Good job.

Pecos Pete| 8.23.11 @ 3:41PM

Now, if only all of the bureaucrats and politicians would just stay out of the buildings in the quake zone.....

sharon| 8.23.11 @ 4:01PM

Ha Ha! That's funny. I love this magazine and (besides EXCELLENT contributors), this comment is an example why!

Skippy| 8.23.11 @ 5:05PM

Since the quake occured on the dangerous and unpredictable seismic zone commonly known as "Bush's Fault", the President assured Americans today that the destruction will go on and on forever.

Tina B| 8.23.11 @ 6:04PM

You too, Skippy, you got me by an hour,

I love this place! Pecos, above and beyond.

Quartermaster| 8.23.11 @ 6:54PM

Lord's column, alas, is drivel. It woulda been nice if there was more thought, and a lot less imagination behind it. Much ad hominem and guilt by association.

The quake was centered in Louisa County, VA and was a 5.9. One of the strongest to hit the eastern seaboard. The Paulbots, however, were not responsible, any more than Lord was.

Tina B| 8.24.11 @ 7:23AM

Being a Californian for 20 years, and "enjoying" the Sylmar quake in the late 60s, I know the epicenter isn't all that's rocking. DC must have been freaked. If a hurricane SHOULD happen by there as well this week, now being a Floridian, I know that could freak 'em out even more. And IMHO freaking out the DC Elites, who seem to feel untouchable, would be a good thing.

Just sayin'
