The comments thread on my column this morning provides a nice illustration of the divide among conservatives. It also reminds us that becoming the consensus conservative candidate is easier said than done.

As I've said many, many times here folks, IT'S THE DEMOCRATS, STUPIDS ['....The California Democrat last week told a Detroit crowd that she was frustrated with the Obama administration's approach to the economy, urging voters to "unleash" her on the White House. But at the forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Saturday, Waters directed her ire at the Tea Party. "I'm not afraid of anybody. This is a tough game. You can't be intimidated. You can't be frightened. And as far as I'm concerned, the Tea Party can go straight to hell," she said........']!!!!!

She has brilliantly figured out that the Tea Party will not affect her next election.

I just got through reading it myself, Mr. Antle, and I agree. I am an across-the-board conservative myself, so, as several on the thread also said, I will support and vote for whomever the Republicans nominate. I prefer some candidates more than others, however, almost all of them more than Romney, who is at best a centrist. At best.

May I respectfully make an editorial request. I see (largely from reading these threads; I participate pretty sparingly) Perry as being viewed by most comprehensive conservatives as fillling the bill adequately on every issue except one: immigration. I would like to see this issue addressed from a Texas perspective.

I sent both my children to college in Texas (Trinity and TCU) hoping it would make Texans out of them, and it did. I may retire there myself in a couple of years. I've been there a lot, especially the San Antonio/Austin and DFW areas.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I perceive Texans as just plain viewing Mexicans differently from the rest of the country. They have always been there, they are just a part of the landscape, and there were Mexicans fighting inside the Alamo.

I would like to see an article exploring what I believe to be the Texas roots beneath Perry's views on immigration. Maybe it should be written by a Texan who understands, such as William Murchison. I know there are several Texans on this thread pretty regularly, and some of them have tried to explain it to everyone else, but I would like to see it treated in depth for discussion.

Thanks for your consideration.

It seems you haven't been to Texas much lately. The state is over-run with illegals. There is no "special" relationship that Texans have with Mexicans. There are many Hispanic American citizens in Texas - I served in the Marine Corps with many. However, the new crop of Hispanics that are illegal from Mexico and elsewhere don't want to assimilate. They want you to learn their language and accomodate their needs.

It is with no joy that I tell you the state is screwed because of illegals. High teen pregnancy rates, high poverty rates and many other woes are attributable to the illegals. Mexican barrios are pervasive all over the state.

Don't fall for "Texas illegals are just fine" line. It's bs. Perry has had a hand in making Texas more of a dung hole.

Butch---two excellent choices, especially the amphibious one. (TCU '84, B.S. Biology, Magna Cum Laude)

Go Horned Frogs. Howard Payne Univ. and Baylor as well as Rice would all work. Not that I managed to be there.

Thanks, Occam. I was very pleased with the education she got there. She went on and got a Master of Accountancy degree and is now a CPA in Dallas, mother of two, and a Rush baby who adds to Texas' conservatism. Guess you are a football fan, huh?

General Election anybody but Obama.

Primary still too early to tell.

Indeed.
Anybody but Obama 2012.

~OR~

Republicans for the Defeat of Obama 2012.

Lesser Weevil| 8.22.11 @ 8:10PM

I voted for "anybody but Obama" in '08. Didn't work out well.
