Eric Cantor actually is telling fellow Republicans not to try to reduce domestic discretionary spending this year below the limits set in the recent debt-ceiling deal. This is, to put it mildly, an outrage. I explain more here. Please do read the whole post I just linked to. But this gives a taste of it:

This is nonsense. It's sickening. The recent agreement's limits were just that: limits, not mandates. They are part and parcel of the same agreement that calls for another $1.5 trillion in savings. There is no reason, not on God's green Earth, that some of that $1.5 trillion can't come from domestic discretionary appropriations, even in advance of any deal reached by the "supercommittee." Any additional savings achieved through the appropriations process this fall will only make the supercommittee's job easier.

"But if Congress actually does its job and passes Approps bills one by one, in plenty of time, rather than throwing everything into a massive omnibus bill, then it becomes far easier to make the case for individual cuts." I agree entirely, and wonder why there has been no attempt to do this, beginning with whatever consensus might already exist (hopefully consensus exists on at least some matters!).

Rob,
You correctly identify a major part of the problem we face getting control of the budget. Non-germain riders and amendments show up so often as to be commen. They got Planned Parenthood funded on a military appropriation bill. These bills should stand on their own merits not on the horse trading and amendment for "pet projects" so often abused. Along with earmarks, non-germain riders should go the way of the Dodo.

Real American| 8.18.11 @ 4:00PM

the Left never does this. after they strike a deal for 50% of what they want, they immediately go after the other 50%. The GOP needs to be relentless in going after real spending cuts, especially if they don't want primary challengers.

David W| 8.18.11 @ 4:02PM

We know where they could start with cuts - ignoring Obama's rocking bus made in Canada. Certain departments that seem to have no purpose other than spending money. Just give them a 50% across the board cut, and then let the Obama appointees figure out how to deal with it.

Pecos Pete| 8.18.11 @ 4:12PM

Congress ain't gonna make any REAL cuts to their spending. What they will do is cut the rate of future growth and then declare that spending has been cut.

We are out of REAL money and these clowns keep on borrowing and spending.

Once again, IT'S THE DEMOCRATS, STUPIDS:

'.....Newsmax Billions Go to Alternate Energy in US, India Thursday, August 18, 2011 04:19 PM
By: Tom O'Connell
As the White House considers curtailing subsidies to traditional domestic energy suppliers, its support of alternative energy has soared — and it’s sending millions to India.
A new report from the Department of Energy shows that subsidies to the solar and wind industries skyrocketed 626 and 946 percent, respectively, between 2007 and 2010. Total subsidies to these industries rose from $5.1 billion to $14.67 billion in that period, reports CNSNews.com. In April, President Barack Obama reiterated his call for an end to subsidies to oil and gas companies and said that, “instead of subsidizing yesterday’s energy, we should invest in tomorrow’s.”But Americans aren’t the only ones benefiting from Obama’s interest in sustainable energy. The U.S. government’s own Export-Import Bank has loaned $75 million to Indian solar initiatives, with an additional $500 million on the way before the end of the year. The bank claims that supporting solar projects in emerging markets like India creates jobs in the United States, because those nations buy U.S. services and goods.......'

Is Eric Cantor part of the DC cabal begging Paul Ryan to run so as to avoid a Rick Perry presidency?

PCP Smoker| 8.18.11 @ 8:44PM

You nailed my friend. You nailed it. Their panties are in a collective knot. They are asking Ryan, a well known sellout, and Christie to run ASAP. They know Romney can't win and Bachmann and Perry are coming on strong.

C Bowen| 8.18.11 @ 5:21PM

Hilarious. Quinn gushes over cutting a deal for minimal dollar cuts, then today acts all so surprised and angry when the reason given to not support a deal, budget or debt ceiling, come to fruition.

Nice slight of hand.

Quin| 8.18.11 @ 7:07PM

Not exactly. One of the arguments I made all along was that the limits are just that: limits, not mandates. Take the small gains, pocket them, and then immediately come back formore.
Also all along, for months, I have argued that the BEST vehicle for fighting would be on the fall Approps bills. I have been 100% consistent. I know the process. My arguments have always been about when and where, tactically, we could achieve the greatest savings. And since I've been out there for decades consistently fighting for (and in 1995-96 actually helping a great deal to achieve) real savings, going out on limbs to criticize DeLay and Hastert and Bush and Gingrich even when they were popular, then it seemed that I merited a little trust that when I specifically wrote that the differences in approach were over tactics, not substance or goals, people should believe me and not attack my motives even if they disagreed with my approach.

PCP Smoker| 8.18.11 @ 8:46PM

How does the GOP "go back for more" when they did not even have the guts to put up a fight? Kind of nonsense is this?

Warrior| 8.18.11 @ 10:22PM

You are not thinking like a big government moderate Republican. They all believe incrementalism works just fine. Now that years and years of moving the country to left, everyone should forget about our almost worthless fiat currency, exploding entitlement obligations, sustaining 5 wars for the military industrial complex and tyrannical court system. Be happy that the federal budget with it's 1.5 trillion dollar shortfall wasn't increased this year or next. It's a huge victory if you just look at it the right way.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.18.11 @ 5:27PM

I think Quin has a new boss, (editor), who is quietly castrating him.

Oldefarte| 8.18.11 @ 5:31PM

Uh oh, hope not, cause that would HURT!!!!

Occam's Tool| 8.18.11 @ 6:53PM

Incidentally, over on FoxNews you can see a video of Ben "The Village Idiot" Stein arguing that taxes should be increased.

Dear G-d. We need BACHMANN!

Solo| 8.18.11 @ 6:56PM

ALL government subsidies should be cut to zero.

I know, I know....someone's subsidy is righteous and just...and important to America's future....

Bull Hockey!

Cut it all! And return us to a Zero Base line budget--no more of this automatic 8% across the board increase every year.

Sheesh! We wonder why government keeps getting more and more expensive.....

Pecos Pete| 8.18.11 @ 8:22PM

Solo: Exactly!

Warrior| 8.18.11 @ 10:32PM

Conservatives seem to scare the hell out of most of these writers. In a day where Obama makes moves to stop deportation of illegals and the war in Libya continues to move forward. We get to read feigned indignation when just about every conservative commenter on this site told them before, during and after the debt ceiling debate the Republicans would capitulate and in a grand way. Now that it's happening, they try to assume the mantle of reporting this as news.

farmboy| 8.18.11 @ 9:24PM

Doesn't surprise me. Anyone that runs for office is drawn to power. You think they are going to do anything that will cut that power?

aware| 8.19.11 @ 6:19AM

It seems like only yesterday that glowing reports of "tough fiscal conservatives" like Cantor, Ryan, etc. were going to right the ship of state(fools), being the "adults in the room" that they are. I was ridiculed here after the November elections for saying this would happen.

Government is a vast criminal conspiracy involving right sock puppets and left sock puppets so you get caught up in the WWF mentality and the excitement of personality cults. Nobody in the arena realizes the whole thing is rehearsed and the outcome decided by the owners.

So now Quin, go ahead and kick that football that Perry, Bachmann, Romney, etc is holding for you. I'm sure this time they won't snatch it away.
Defending politicians just makes a fool out of yourself eventually.
One more time for any with ears, there is NO stopping this train wreck. It's 30 years too late. Stop putting faith in career politicians to save you or you will be dead. If you are not well along in preparing for collapse you are failing yourself and your families. The first drops of rain are falling and a flood of biblical proportions is coming.

sjccoach| 8.19.11 @ 9:33AM

This proves again that Washington DC is kabuki at its finest. The debt deal is all smoke and mirrors that allows both parties to increase spending. Boehner and Cantor are two of the biggest RINOs in DC

Zbigniew Mazurak| 8.23.11 @ 4:36AM

I've been telling people for a long time that Eric Cantor is a RINO of the same kind as Dubya. He must be voted out of Congress next year, along with his RINO buddy Boehner.
