The Spectacle Blog

In a quick blog post at CFIF, I make the point that Gov. Perry's slam at Ben Bernanke was really, really uncalled for -- and really, really on target in terms of underlying substance. If Perry drops the demagoguery but keeps the substance, I'll give him not just three cheers but three hundred. His central point is absolutely sound, and he is right to make it a campaign issue.

If he had left off the Bernarke comment and just pushed the strong dollar 75% of America would not have heard his remarks ... the only way the MSM covers him is because of the Benarke remarks ...

"slam at Ben Bernanke was really, really uncalled for"

Perhaps. However, one of the problems we conservatives seem to have is we are , in general, too nice (yeah, I know, the liberals say we are more like terrorists, but they don't really want us to be, since we have more guns than they do). Maybe he (and the others) can tone it down a bit, but they cannot be afraid to go after the stupidity of what Obama and his comrades (and the bootlicking media) are doing and saying. Conservatives have to talk over the "fingers in the ears and going la la la la la" actions of the liberals (DWS, the media, black caucus, etc.) in order to reach those who need to understand how they are being screwed (or will be screwed) by the entitlement happy left (and Republicans in name only).

You need to cut back on the caffeine. You're in parenthetical overdrive.

LarryK| 8.18.11 @ 11:28AM

Perry was calling a spade a spade. Oh Oh RAAAACCCCIIISTTTTT!

bobmontgomery| 8.18.11 @ 12:31PM

Strange, Quin. I was sure it was here at Spectator that Codevilla's surveyal of the landscape was given such prominence. We don't suppose Texas A&M or Idaho State will ever get any respect, but we do think there is a difference between demagoguery and righteous indignation, and real, down-to-earth, attention-getting straight talking for the folk. Shame you couldn't raise one cheer unless Perry uses terms like "My good friend, Ben Bernanke."

Margie| 8.18.11 @ 12:34PM

Uncalled for. You mean like that guy who stood up and said "You lie!" to Obama?

Sic 'em, Rick!
Yee-haww. LOL.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.18.11 @ 12:34PM

Quin,
Perry simply spoke the truth........unvarnished.
DEAL WITH IT!

We Texans WOULD be ugly, and it would be treasonous in our minds.

I have been a fortune CEO for over thirty years...in international trade. I understand what currency degradation does in international markets. Evidently you do not.

...well...Alabama and Louisiana are not much involved, so you are pretty ignorant.

If the rest of the country cannot smell the coffee, I'm saddened...but not surprised.

Go Perry/Palin...the PP ticket!

c. j. acworth| 8.18.11 @ 5:52PM

Ken, I'm sure you know what currency deradation does in international markets. I'm also sure that most anyone with a grocery bill and a gas tank to fill knows what it does at home. Perry was right.

PCC| 8.18.11 @ 5:56PM

You Texans would be ugly? What is this "would be" business?

In recent years we've had enough Texas chauvinism and boastfulness in the White House to last a lifetime.

"Don't mess with Texas"? My ass.

Margie| 8.18.11 @ 12:41PM

The PP ticket: Waaay better than the B.O. ticket!!

All American American| 8.18.11 @ 1:05PM

The fricking country is being led off a cliff and limp-wristed neocons are worried about someone yelling "STOP!" too loudly.

Good Lord. Grow a set for cripes sake.

simon templar| 8.18.11 @ 2:29PM

I love you. In a manly way, of course!

All American American| 8.19.11 @ 1:00PM

Love you like a brother too there ST! :)

Smirking Weasel| 8.18.11 @ 1:45PM

More of the treason perpetrated by America's alleged leaders and elite should be called such-but not by one of their own. But of course Hillyer's a little coward.

martin j smith| 8.18.11 @ 1:56PM

Its about time Bernanke was called out loud and clear. He is carrying out Obama's directives and this should be headlined so I say--Keep going Perry !!!!!!!!!!!

simon templar| 8.18.11 @ 2:27PM

Perhaps, you can explain to me how something that is right on target can also be uncalled for?
Hmmm, the guy is telling the hard truth, not pulling the punch, but also should not have said it.

Stop apologizing, stop playing with the double standards, stop knocking fellow conservatives, start defending fellow conservatives, and start realizing we are living in a time that hard truth must be faced and we have no time for niceties, watered down rhetoric, or limp wristed politics.

Nancy in NC| 8.18.11 @ 4:13PM

I thought most of the posters here are Conservatives. Apparently I was mistaken.

Perry is a conservative as my dog. He's been weak on illegal immigration, pushed the Guardasil thing, favors the Pan-Am Highway, was a former supporter of Al Gore, may have connections with the Bilderbergs...heck, what's not too love if you're a progressive RHINO?

big al| 8.18.11 @ 4:29PM

Yeah and he's probably the anti-christ, too!

Quartermaster| 8.18.11 @ 7:25PM

Probably not, but he is a RINO.

Scrapette Jones| 8.18.11 @ 7:54PM

I'm a recovered Demaholic turned moderate independent, and I'm also a Texan. If I'm honest, I have to say thank you to Perry for making us aware of Guardasil. Our 22-y.o. daughter was vaccinated as a young teen and her grandmother was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer probably caused by HPV. So, my point is, many of us in Texas considered Perry's push for Guardasil to be a good thing. We could have always opted out of it, too. And nobody writes about people like us, so the whole story is not being told. I also think calling out Bernanke was spot on...about time someone did. And I suspect it was no mistake on Perry's part. Like Paul Burka of Texas Monthly says, do not count him out or underestimate him, and like Clinton recently observed, Perry's a good-looking rascal. While I am still looking at all candidates, my mind is open to Perry. Anyone who can tell the Bushies no thanks has the gonads we need right now. Plus, I suspect Perry would fight to walk back the EPA, the NLRB, the public sector unions, and he'd fight for domestic drilling, a secure border (infrastructure jobs program!!!!), and immigration reform. Yup, he's looking better and stronger all the time...
