The Spectacle Blog

The press corps has a mild buzz going about a weekend contretemps ginned up, for publicity’s sake, by Sarah Palin’s camp, in her ongoing campaign to show how badly she is victimized by the media. The odd thing is that she has been victimized by the media, horribly so, and many of us (myself included, in several posts after the Gabby Giffords shooting) have rushed to her defense — so she doesn’t need to gin up controversies out of thin air. But that’s exactly what she and her team did this past weekend.

What happened was that Alex Pappas of The Daily Caller, one of the rising stars among political scribes and a meticulously careful and wonderfully polite, fair-minded young man (an aside: I’ve known him since he was in junior high school), wrote a perfectly fine story about Palin’s current stances vis-a-vis the presidential race. In it, one of the things she said was that if Mitt Romney is the nominee, well, of course she would endorse him over Barack Obama.

Fox Nation picked up the story and, in its own headline (not Pappas’, not the Daily Caller’s, but its own headline completely apart from anything Pappas ever wrote) played up the “Romney endorse” angle in a way that apparently did not make it clear that the endorsement might be in the general election, rather than the primary campaign. (The headline is no longer available at Fox Nation, so I can’t say exactly what the wording was.)

Anyway, the Palin team pounced. Specifically inviting over reporter Kasie Hunt from Politico so she could hear the exchange, Palin called Pappas’ cell phone and began berating him in a very scolding manner for writing a headline suggesting she supports Romney. Pappas didn’t even know what she was talking about. When he tried to say that neither he nor his editors had written such a headline, she said she didn’t have time for this, that she needed to go back to the “real people” at the State Fair, and hung up on him.

Later, when it became clear that Fox Nation, not Pappas or The Daily Caller, had written the semi-offending headline, a Palin press aide called Pappas back not to apologize but to say that they now realized it was Fox and that the headline had been taken down. “No,” Pappas said, far more bemused than angry or upset, “he didn’t come close to apologizing.”

Added Pappas, again lightly rather than angrily: “It was definitely ironic when she was the one complaining about a reporter being sloppy when she was the one being sloppy by complaining to the wrong reporter.”

Look, it’s one thing for Palin to complain about unfair press. She has a right to do so. It’s also understandable that somebody might, at first glance, mis-read an online piece in a way that makes the original source unclear. But, really, somebody with so much experience in the public eye should know A) that reporters often don’t write their own headlines; B) that there is a difference between an original news story, on one hand, and a partial reprint of a story on a news aggregator such as Fox Nation; C) that if the text of a story doesn’t match the headline, it is only the text, not the headline, that is the reporter’s doing; and D) that such a small mis-impression isn’t worth getting hot under the collar about. I mean, really, talk about a thin skin! This was absurd.

What was even more absurd is that she and her team deliberately played it up by inviting one reporter over just to hear her berate another reporter. That’s unprofessional on its face, and it’s also really odd in that the reporter they called over works for a publication often accused of leaning left, while the (innocent) reporter being berated works for a publication accused of leaning right — and one whose whole story, in the first place, was entirely accurate and showed absolutely no animus against Palin or even anything that would put Palin in a bad light.

If Palin wants to get rid of the image of being a difficult diva with a rude streak, she needs to stop acting like a difficult diva with a rude streak.

Wow, not used to seeing such misogynistic speech from the A.S. Obama treats the press much worse when he thinks they have wronged him and no sexist terms are used to described him.

simon templar| 8.15.11 @ 7:45PM

Nathan...excellent observation.

He makes her out like she has a thin skin because she was most likely misinformed and made one mistake and then made an apology of which was not sorrowful enough. Hilarious. After three years of insane insults and smears from his cohorts from drooling, fithy insults about her children, family, and mental faculties to claiming she is the cause of terrorism, I think we can reasonably say the woman does not have a thin skin. Hell, these panzy press boys and girls would not last 5 minutes under this scrutiny and slamming..they be either jumpimg out windows or crying in the corner. They can not handle her mistake (an understandable overreaction at most) without looking for someone to sooth them.

Cosmo| 8.17.11 @ 2:44AM

Spectator writer cheap-shots Sarah Palin

Nobama| 8.16.11 @ 2:49AM

The only diva here is you, Quin. Shut up and stop whining, weenie boy.

Jonathan Poletti| 8.16.11 @ 4:33AM

A journalist should monitor the headlines put on his stories. It's his responsibility. His name is on it. The media has been allowed to lie in headlines, then disclaiming responsibility, and Palin is correct to be angered.

Russell | 8.16.11 @ 9:35AM

You missed the point, I think. The incorrect headline was at Fox Nation's article *about* the original article. The incorrect headline was not on the original article. Thus there was nothing Pappas (the writer she accused) could have done about it.

larryG| 8.17.11 @ 2:47AM

Jump ball.

shipley130| 8.18.11 @ 2:03AM

Fox Nation does their headline trickery on purpose, I think, and it makes the liberals (or whatever they are, the Obamabots) so angry that it's worth the time to deal with their horrible comment system.

Peter McGrath| 8.16.11 @ 2:27PM

It's a non-issue, not worth even the keystrokes Hilyer wasted on it. It's too bad that his little buddy's feelings were hurt, and that Hilyer didn't feel he received a sufficient apology. It's even worse that someone like Hilyer would waste his talent writing about something so frivolous and inconsequential.

idalily| 8.16.11 @ 3:19PM

I would say it's trivial, but a non-issue? Gotta disagree there. I think Palin behaved in a way unworthy of the office she says she's interested in pursuing. Can't blame her for being fed-up with the press, but she's starting to act a bit like Princess Diana used to do: play up to the press constantly, wanting the attention, but if anything negative ensues, pull out the victim card. This is disappointing behavior on her part. It's petty. Please, Palin, if you want to be President, rise above this kind of crap.

chaifa| 8.16.11 @ 8:08PM

apparently 'you' don't think...she gave back what she got...good on her...who the hell do these asswipes think they are? all these so called jornotlists should be put in their places every single time they write a wrong! no more playing nice...give back exactly what they give!

Brian G.| 8.16.11 @ 9:35PM

The journalist wasn't wrong, Palin was. Did you even read the article?

Bort| 8.17.11 @ 5:45AM

You mistakenly assume that chaifa can read.

And speaking of mistakes...

"If Palin wants to get rid of the image of being a difficult diva with a rude streak, she needs to stop *acting* like a difficult diva with a rude streak."

What makes the author think it's an act?

shipley130| 8.18.11 @ 2:05AM

Well, she was meeting a Heifer.

Seek| 8.16.11 @ 12:36PM

Quin is no weenie. But hopefully this episode will cause the scales to fall from his eyes and see Palin for what she really is: a nasty and vicious woman on the make with no real ideas.

Sarah Palin was never "victimized" by the mass media. The real story: Some journalists saw through her sooner than others did. Quin Hillyer is a bit late for the party, but I commend him notwithstanding for an honest piece. I'm sure he'll catch pounds of flak in the process.

Boar Hunter| 8.16.11 @ 1:50PM

Obama has admitted his use of drugs with pride. Obama consorted with the traitor Bill Ayres. Obama attended a racist church "Black theology" for years. Obama is a serial lier and you sir are a lover of lies.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 4:19PM

And Presideent Obama is the topic of this article when? Where?

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 10:45AM

'Presideenth'?????

nolaredhead| 8.16.11 @ 5:46PM

You DO realize Palin & her family have their own issues with drugs right?? Why do you think Track REALLY had to enlist?? And Palin has admitted to smoking pot and there are rumors she's done a lot more.. Then again, so did Bush. His cocaine & alcohol use is no secret.

As for hanging out with "traitors", you DO know that Palin's hubby was a member of a separatist/anti-American party in Alaska and that she gave a welcome speech for their group right?? She also has close ties to militia members, one of whom is currently on trial in Alaska for plotting murder & bombings.

And lets not forget HER church which believes in witches. She had an African preacher pray over her as protection against witchcraft. This same preacher wanted to stone a woman to death in Africa because he thought she was a witch. Her church also believes that only Alaska will survive end times so the rest of us are outta luck.

As long as you're going to bring up Obama's past, its only fair to include Palin's.

william legge| 8.16.11 @ 6:57PM

Your an absolute idiot, who is ignorant and misinformed about Sarah Palin's faith. Also a false accuser. Issue with drugs? Pathetic. Try the truth it sure is a better way to live.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 10:05PM

No, he's right. Every one of those claims have been fact checked. It's a fact that Track Palin was an Oxycontin addict. Sarah was a regular at the Forks Roadhouse early in her marriage. There's a video of Palin being "blessed" by that witch doctor.

Please don't demean yourself by resorting to childish name-calling. It brands you as a RWNJ.

Palin is vicious? No, Hitler and Mengele was vicious.

Boar Hunter| 8.16.11 @ 1:42PM

Palin has had investigators and attorneys investigate every aspect of her entire life. Unsuccessful in providing dirt, they have filed endless frivolous lawsuits and have attacked her and her family with the most vicious lies imaginable for years and she has survived. I respect her and appreciate all she has done. What ever the future holds she has done America proud. The same ones who attack her are seemingly ignorant of Obama's history and painfully incurious. I know everything about Palin and hold her in high regard. I know little of Obama and hold him and his supporters in contempt.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 4:25PM

Oh, they found dirt. Just ask Tony Knowles, Palin's Dem rival in 2006.

And the dirt has been discussed everywhere. It's amazing, though, how the discussions just tend to die for lack of follow-up or the concerted efforts of Palin apologists on the attack.

It's a bottom-line thing, a bean-counter thing. Palin makes money for anyone who discusses her, even her followers.

I believe she truly thought she could get royalties for all these discussions of her by trademarking her name. How has that panned out, Sarah?

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 10:49AM

Frank| 8.16.11 @ 9:14PM

Hey Phillies...Gov. Palin has a bug up her butt too, and it's called your head. So how 'bout unwedging that noggin'; truth is, your sycophancy is no better.

CrackerHound| 8.16.11 @ 1:43PM

Come on Nathan...don't you think Palin was a little ridiculous here?

Zbigniew Mazurak | 8.17.11 @ 8:01AM

This publication has been steadily lurching in the anti-GOP, anti-conservative, pro-libertarian direction for years. But don't worry, Mr Hillyer, Jim Antle and other garbage writers have already completely discredited AmSpec, so you can't do any more damage to its credibility.

Jason| 8.15.11 @ 7:41PM

Nathan's comment above says it all about Palin: when she is clearly in the wrong and is called on it, her supporters will find some way to blame the messenger and some way to twist reality to make Sarah look good. She could stab Mother Theresa on live TV and her fans would say she was framed.

simon templar| 8.15.11 @ 7:54PM

Projecting again....
Jason comment above says it all about Obama: when he is clearly in the wrong and is called on it, his supporters and sycophant MSM will find some way to blame the messenger (the Tea Party, the sunami, Bush, the Republicans, the rich, wall street, the bankers, the rating agencies, aliens from mars....) and some way twist reality to make Obama look good. He could burn the constitution on the white house front lawn and wrap himself in the red flag on live TV and his minions would say, you are a racist!

Michael Tomlinson| 8.16.11 @ 11:42AM

Simon he's done a pretty good job of figuratively using the Constitution at toilet paper so burning it might be a step up for him.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 4:36PM

Oh, I don't know --Sarah Palin thinking that the First Amendment was written to protect politicians like her from the mean ol' media writing about her is a bit hilarious, if not outright trashing the Constitution.

And the part about everyone having the right to own a gun isn't exactly the intent of the Second Amendent, which spells out the DUTY of the 18th century citizen to be prepared to serve in a militia to protect his country (which, at that time, was very small - 13 colonies).

"Without a regular army and police force, it had been the duty of certain men to keep watch and ward at night and to confront and capture suspicious persons."

Unfortunately five 21st century conservative activist Supreme Court justices see it the same way the right wing of the Republican Party does these days.

Locked and loaded; don't retreat, reload.

Boar Hunter| 8.16.11 @ 8:17PM

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”-

Samuel Adams

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 10:14PM

No wonder the current iteration of the GOP is out on the campaign trail wrapping themselves in (certain aspects of) the Constitution. They like that quote from one of the Founding Fathers.

Boar Hunter| 8.16.11 @ 11:21PM

Our founding fathers foresaw and warned of the United States being undermined. Its just taken a long time for the elitists liberals to collectively gather enough strength to threaten our democracy. Sadly we will seemingly not be rid of this plague. I can never understand the vitriol some have for this great country or their eagerness to bring it down.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 10:51AM

At least the Palins WORK FOR THEIR LIVING, which is more than can be said for YA BOY AT 1600!!!!!!!!

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 7:07PM

Isn't it wonderful when Tea Partiers say, "show me ONE EXAMPLE of right wing racism," and there are people like you to point to?

The President is a man of fifty. He is not a boy. You may not have heard, but bigots regularly refer to African American adult men as "boys."

Not that he had anything to do with the topic, which is Conservative Writer Discovers Sarah Palin Acts Just The Way Detractors Have Portrayed Her.

She's a negative person, obsessed with her image, and incapable of apologizing. Celebrity may have made her rich, but it's also brought out the worst in her. Try to deflect attention onto others, but the reality is that Americans are realizing that the wheels are coming off her Me the People bus.

Boar Hunter| 8.17.11 @ 8:06PM

Always with the race card, so sad and tired an excuse. It does not serve you well. As for Obama if he quit acting like a child maybe people would not refer to him as such. Oh and whats the black unemployment rate, incarceration, rate of children born to unwed mothers in the black community. Try speaking to "your people" whitey is tired of hearing about things they have no control of.

MrsPolly| 8.18.11 @ 8:21PM

You may hate Obama's actions, but they aren't those of a child. There is nothing in this world that will persuade some people to not call him "boy."

No need to play a race card when it's right there on the table!

Love how you assume that "my people" are black. I'll get right on with speaking to them about dealing with prejudiced jerks.

wodiej| 8.16.11 @ 8:27AM

Uhm, not that would be Obama.

shipley130| 8.18.11 @ 2:08AM

Well, it would probably be the union thugs that did it and then try to blame Palin.

User92| 8.15.11 @ 9:35PM

I'm no huge fan of Palin for president but I agree, this seems like much ado about nothing, even if taken at face value. Sometimes you reporters get too wrapped up in the game. Some folks should take a week off to clear their heads.

Tony S.| 8.15.11 @ 9:46PM

A blog is the appropriate forum for this kind of thing.

beebop| 8.16.11 @ 5:46AM

Actually, I think that reporters are to politics as "teachers" are to "do."

Sane Alaskan Woman| 8.16.11 @ 1:41PM

Too wrapped up in the game? Which game is that, the one SP constantly plays - try to grab as much media attention as possible, whether she has something real to say or not? She called a reporter over to witness her faux pas so she has no one to blame but herself and her ravenous ego that needs constant feeding. Perhaps the one who should take a week off is Sarah and give us all a break from these non-'news stories.'

CrackerHound| 8.16.11 @ 1:53PM

You are right Sane...SHE created the WHOLE drama on purpose! She was hoping it would be spun in her favor. What Palin supporters should REALLY see is a potential president whi is capable of jumping to conclusion and ACTING on those conclusions hastily and without forethought.

I started out supporting Palin as a potential candidate and still have good thoughts about her as a person....but President....NO WAY!

Thom| 8.15.11 @ 7:50PM

Quin,
If a bullet goes by your head several times a day for say two or three years most would understand if a car backfired nearby and you jumped into a mud puddle out of conditioned response…..

By the same token, I don’t say anything to any media person without my own records because in our 24/7 media culture what you say is like a bullet once it leaves the barrel of a gun. You have no control over where it ultimately lands unless you deliver it yourself and if it goes off course for whatever reason the damage is done and normally can’t be corrected. Clearly a mistake was made, an overreaction of sorts but if Alex Pappas had sole possession of that information then he bears some responsibility for how it ended up at Fox Nation.

Occam's Tool| 8.15.11 @ 8:10PM

You know, I was once the psychiatrist for the Alabama Chain Gang. International News story. Not one detail did the Press get correct. Not One Frickin' Detail.

I also watched a local newspaper take down an excellent cardiac surgeon, a colleague, because he would not sell out his practice to a Louisville hospital. When he attempted suicide over the stress, they reported every detail.

There's nothing wrong with most reporters that a good Casino Royale interrogation wouldn't improve. Most reporters are as ethical as trial lawyers in malpractice lawsuits.

Thom| 8.15.11 @ 8:21PM

Occam's Tool, see my 8:17 post. With 80% of the profession being blood sucking stooges for the Democrat Party, Christ couldn’t get quoted correctly today if he appeared on the 700 Club live…..

It's not only that someone who is so much in the public eye should know better. It's that Palin also prides herself on her knowledge of journalism (based on her extensive career as a weekend TV sports intern). Or, as she once explained, "I want to help clean up the state that is so sorry today of journalism. And I have a communications degree."

simon templar| 8.15.11 @ 8:00PM

In order to do it, I do not have expectations that she has to walk on water, have never sinned, and raise people from the dead to qualify as a critic of the 'holy', unquestionable media and and so-called journalism.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 12:33PM

Apples and oranges. One is a JOB, the other is an elected position.

At least Obama spent five years years in his several jobs, a year at the Business International Corporation, then another year at the New York Public Interest Research Group, and three years as a "community organizer" before continuing his education at Harvard.

Hey, all that work at jobs before Obama entered law school after getting his BA sounds like what Palin had to do to be able to get her BA. Wow, they're more alike than anyone talks about!

cath| 8.16.11 @ 10:57PM

I wish Obama had held a REAL job - worked in the business world - had to meet a budget etc. before becoming President. Perhaps THEN, he might have a clue.
On the current topic. . .Yeah, sounds like Palin messed up - jumped the gun. . .whatever.
So what - give me the name of one politician or reporter who hasn't.

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 7:51PM

The President worked for the Business International Corporation for one year right after he obtained his J.D. Then he worked for the New York Public Interest Research Group. Then he became director of a church-based group consisting of 8 parishes, during which time he set up a college prep tutoring service, a jobs program, and a tenants' rights group. This was all from 1985 to 1988, before he wrote his best-selling book and served seven years in the Illinois legislature. He also practiced as a civil rights attorney and taught.

During that same time, Sarah Heath won Miss Congeniality in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant and attended the last two of her five colleges (she left the first because she didn't like the weather ). She married Todd Palin and became a part-time sportscaster on a local station.

Subsequently, Barack Obama went on to become President, and Miss Congeniality lost her crown!

shipley130| 8.18.11 @ 2:16AM

Obama won because of his race. If someone was promoted because they were pretty with big boobs, many would be angry. Well, Obama got his promotion without merit. His work ethic during his congressional years is a little pathetic.

MrsPolly| 8.18.11 @ 8:26PM

Oh silly Birther, you have even the place where Obama's birth certificate was investigated wrong. It was Politifact: http://www.politifact.com/trut.....rtificate/

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:01AM

BS! The worthless CPOMMUNITY ORGANIZER has never worked an honest day in his life, but has spent a lifetime existing on the public dole. What was the source of funding that paid for his private school tuition at Occidental, Princton and Harvard? Who/what political influence wrote letters of recommendation soliciting his acceptance by same? If loans were obtained, how did he obtain same with his impoverished background? How was he able to repay said loans by working a lowely paid COMMUNITY ORGANIZER in Chicago? Why does he not now have a law license and did he ever have one? Why did Resco see half his residential lot acreage to him from which his present residence now stands? Who actually wrote 'Dreams' and why is its writing style obviously different from his previous book? Who influenced the granting of his lucrative hospital job in Chicago which tripled her previous salary??????????

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 7:29PM

Another example of bigotry at work. You have judged all the various jobs he held to be worthless, based on nothing. That is prejudiced thinking.

He took out student loans, and your question, "How did he obtain loans with his imporverished background?" is ridiculous. That's exactly what student loans are for. They took a very long time to pay off, and not until his book became a best-seller (you know, the memoir you never read while yelling all the while that "WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS MAN!") was he able to pay them off.

"Dreams" was his FIRST book. He obtained his Juris Doctor from Harvard, Magna Cum Laude. That's not an honor obtainable through quotas.

Both he and the First Lady have their law licences. They may be on inactive status, since they're both a little busy doing something else right now, but they haven't surrendered them, nor need to. That is a false rumor which you can check at snopes.com: http://www.snopes.com/politics.....censes.asp

shipley130| 8.18.11 @ 2:21AM

Snopes, the same place where Obama's birth certificate was cited as the real thing, but in reality, was forged? You cite Obama's book as proof. That's where you go wrong.

Lots of us don't have a rich daddies, snooty!

Seek| 8.18.11 @ 7:21PM

Neither do I. And it took me four years to get a B.A. and six more (often working full-time) to get a master's and Ph.D. I managed. In any event, Palin's education doesn't show in her semi-literate public pronouncements.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 4:46PM

The point is, obviously, that Sarah Palin displays
no knowledge of what was taught in those classes that eventually earned her that degree.

For one thing, in this case she ignored the "five Ws" --"Who, What, When, Where and Why" . And for another, she's complained that journalists who were asking questions about her and her record were violating her First Amendment rights and that such journalists were “a threat to democracy.”

Wow. As she herself says, that's a "back-asswards" interpretation of the First Amendment.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:03AM

BS! At least she's worked for her living, contrary to that worthless SOB now ruining all of our lives in the last three years!!!!

sgt. york| 8.15.11 @ 7:53PM

So...no witnesses, no quotes. Pappas just assumes it was Palin on the other end of the phone (as opposed to an aid) and then slaps her with a "cheap-shot" label?
Is this the Onion?

Tony S.| 8.15.11 @ 9:49PM

Or the Politico reporter witnessed Palin's call and the label was slapped by Hillyer, not Pappas.

sgt. york| 8.16.11 @ 2:03PM

Doesn't say that anywhere above.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:00PM

Yeah...sorta like the time Palin assumed it was Nickolas Sarkozy on the other end of the telephone call she got just before Election Day in November 2008.

I'd be willing to bet Jason Recher could be blamed for BOTH of those phone calls.

Imagine how much of an idiot an aide would have to be to think that the head of state of a foreign country would be calling the vice-presidential candidate in an American election just days before voting.

Then compare that to this exercise in stupidity.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:04AM

No, the 'exercise in stupidity' occurrred on 11/4/08 by the American voters!!!!!

Conservative Bob| 8.15.11 @ 7:57PM

CB, this is gonna take a real big specialist (Super Doctor) to nurse that big ego booboo of the press corp.

Tony S.| 8.15.11 @ 9:51PM

You don't find it at all annoying that Palin makes the initial call so a Politico reporter can hear and that -- upon discovering she was looking at the wrong story -- has an aide call Pappas back to explain?

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 3:01AM

Not really, but what I do find annoying and just a little more deserving of my attention is my nation being destroyed by a party and a poser who can not seem to stop spending money and growing an unsustainable federal government. Are you a man or a little easily annoyed boy?

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 11:04AM

They call what you're feeling "obsessed".

Same with Sarah. That's why she's never seen without her Blackberry, her connection to what the media and bloggers are saying about her.

In this case, as I've noticed several times before (and which has been documented on C4P), no doubt one of her fans e-mailed her about the headline but forgot to mention it was not on the original article -- and that news lit a firecracker under her (to put it politely).

No, she's not thin-skinned, she says so herself... ;-/

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 11:49AM

They call what you're thinking, "palin derangement syndrome."
I am obsessed because I could care less about this story about nothing and am more concerned about bigger fish to fry.
Liberalism really is a mental disorder and a form of retardation. You babble out anything and like a true narcissist, you think it just came down from high. Did you get a gold star from your whacked out hippie teacher in public school for whatever you did, right or wrong?

Joe Vogler| 8.16.11 @ 12:49PM

You tell him, simon. 'Bout time he learns.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 1:55PM

You do realize, don't you, that the term "Palin Derangement Syndrome" is frequently and more accurately applied to fans like you, don't you? Michele Malkin was twisting the knife in YOUR back...

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:07AM

Can that worthless presidential impostor survive without his teleprompter? His eloquence in speeches would be reduced to UH, DUH, AAAA, etc if not for same[and you have the nerve to talk about Palin's blackberry?????]!!!!

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 8:02PM

He thinks before he speaks. Naturally it would seem foreign to you.

Yawn. Teleprompters, "This just shows they are so SCARED of Sarah!" and "Palin Derangement Syndrome." Hardly! She is an irascible goofball, and wonderful in her awfulness. I would hate it if she went away.

Margie| 8.17.11 @ 12:19PM

Obsessed you say, EMC?
Hmm. let's see. Just how many posts here are yours out of over 400?
LOL.

Hank| 8.15.11 @ 8:05PM

Sarah Palin is highly intelligent woman with a good sense of conservatism. That being said, she is also a remarkably thin-skinned person. Yes, the media treats her poorly but what Republican has been treated fairly by the media? Much like Obama, she does not have the temperment to be president.

simon templar| 8.15.11 @ 8:10PM

Well for one why should we put up with a double standard? Do you like being insulted and smeared? Remarkably thin-skinned? LOL. You would not last 5 minutes under that weight..so who the hell are you to judge. How about posting your real name and address here?
(crickets)

Tony S.| 8.15.11 @ 9:53PM

The point is that this was a case in which she was not being misrepresented by the reporter in question.

Thom| 8.15.11 @ 8:17PM

“A) that reporters often don't write their own headlines;”

If FOX NATION took part or Alex Pappas’s entire article and misquoted any part of it including a misleading byline and Alex doesn’t have a problem with FOX NATION then he is as much a part of the problem as FOX NATION. The reason Journalism has a lower worth to most people than Lawyers, Politicians and whores is because they don’t have any integrity with regard to the Freedom of Speech rights of those they quote. Bouncing off the works of others is generally considered fraud with most people and regardless of what common practice is in the Journalism profession, an oxymoron for sure, more and more people are getting tired of the blood sport that is modern journalism. Perhaps that’s the lesson to the rising star Alex Pappas. You want to be trusted then defend your own work against those in your own profession that misuse it for their purposes.

rendite| 8.15.11 @ 10:25PM

Thom, you are right.

The question is: Did Alex Pappas know Fox Nation used his work? Did he review it prior to posting or once posted? If he did, did he object?

Also:

Has Fox Nation apologized to Pappas (if he was unaware) and Ms. Palin? Has Fox Nation admitted to twisting (or not comprehending) Ms. Pappas' article/words?

Foundational: To give this story from Quin Hillyer any credibility, we need to know what the posted Fox Nation article headline stated -- verbatim.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 11:18AM

Outside The Beltway reports a little more of the background of this story, and it turns out it was a BLOGGER who caused the problem!

"Fox Nation, of course, is a portion of the Fox News website where all content is user generated. More than once, it’s become the “source” for outrageous stories about the President or other Democrats that turned out to be true, and Fox has ended up getting blamed for them even though they exercise no editorial control over the site. At this point, one would think they’d realize the site is a problem and police it better. In any event, someone with a Fox Nation account took Pappas’s story, spun it with a headline that made it appear that Palin was endorsing Romney in the primary and Palin and her campaign ended up berating Pappas for something he had no control over."
[...]
"The thing is, this isn’t just an anomaly. In the final days of the 2008 campaign, Palin complained that journalists who were asking questions about her and her record were violating her First Amendment rights and that such journalists were 'a threat to democracy.' Last year, she essentially said that journalists who printed stories she didn’t like were a threat to freedom of the press. Palin’s bizarre treatment of Pappas isn’t something new, it’s part of a pattern since 2008 where she consistent portrays herself as the victim of a media that is out to get her even when, in most cases, the media is merely doing its job. It’s a pattern she wears as a badge of honor, and her supporters seem to love it, but it’s the kind of paranoia that doesn’t belong in a serious political leader."

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 12:06PM

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You are part of a pattern. One we will be changing in 2012.
You really should see a shrink about your fear, obsession and hatred for conservative women. I would not worry to much about what Palin is doing, I think you better be more concerned about your tin messiah.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:12AM

ANYONE who complains about the MSM's brainwashing propaganda should be given the Medal of Honor. The MSM does not include Fox News thankfully, but has been the Democratic Party's controlled mouthpiece for decades!!!!!!

George S| 8.15.11 @ 8:24PM

Palin is smart, and I think this episode is more than meets the eye.

Sounds to me like Palin is trying to push Romney out of the race. A "misdirected rant" is the perfect cover for saying what you want to say and then, at the same time, being able to backtrack -- with an apology borne out of misunderstanding -- if called on it. Testimony without cross examination, what could be better?

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 11:26AM

...Heh... Romney doesn't need any help from Palin to get pushed out of the race, not this time around.

But you may be right, yet wrong; Palin is cunning, but with a hair trigger on her temper. She ALWAYS seems able to gloss over her mistakes, and never apologizes for them (nor do her aides, from the report above). Somehow that behavior has become acceptable to her victims, why is that?

I suspect it is because accepting that behavior is preferable to the out-of-control storm that'd follow if the behavior was confronted. I imagine that is why Alex Pappas shrugged off the entire episode. His career no doubt is more important to him than confronting a woman with a temper and a history of vindictiveness.

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 12:07PM

Projecting again.

Here's what Sarah Palin looked like in 2009, since we're comparing political figures in beachwear:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new.....awaii.html

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:17AM

GEEZ, I wonder what Hilary Clinton would look like in a bathing suit perhaps? Or maybe Nancy Pilosi...no there's a sight that you'd prefer no doubt!!!!!!!!!!

DC Establishment Unconventional Wisdom

Sarah Palin:
Inner-directed, authentic and genuine, self-acceptance, everything she seems to be. Self-assured, self-generating, energetic, adaptable, physically attractive and popular. Ambitious to improve self, becoming outstanding, a kind of human ideal, embodying widely admired qualities. Others are often motivated to want to be like her in some positive way.

In short, Sarah dazzles!!

DC Establishment Conventional Wisdom

Impress others with their spurious superiority, constantly promoting themselves. Narcissistic, with grandiose, inflated notions about themselves and their talents. Arrogance and contempt for others as a defense against feeling envious and jealous of others and their success.

Exploitative and opportunistic, devious and deceptive so that their mistakes and wrongdoings will not be exposed. Untrustworthy, maliciously betraying or sabotaging others to triumph over them. Delusionally vindictive, attempting to ruin others. Relentless, obsessive about destroying whatever reminds them of their own shortcomings and failures.

Crystal Clear… Run SARAH Run!!

Bob| 8.15.11 @ 8:50PM

I want to see Palin and Bachmann get into a fist fight with some hair pulling. That would be grand for the Grand Old Party.

Shill Watch| 8.15.11 @ 11:54PM

Bob is an example of the left's misogyny. This comes from being picked on my the progressive women in his life and not being able to do anything about it. When they give him the go ahead you get to see the real Bob. Feel sorry for him he is only 3/5 of a man.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 11:44AM

I think Bob and Brandt and Hank are Palin fans assigned to pretend to be leftists. It's a trick Sarah herself confessed to in an e-mail to one of her aides back in 2006. It goes along with the voting schemes and the letters to the editor schemes used in the 2006 campaign and the infamous DWTS voting scheme.

Smoke and mirrors.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:18AM

Smoke and mirrors? Nothing like the Clintons or the Kennedys, huh???????

Fuyunbo| 8.15.11 @ 8:52PM

I love the fact that Palin is always playing amateur press critic based on all the high standards she learned during her BA in sports journalism from Podunk State, but apparently no one has ever told her that reporters don't write their own headlines.

beebop| 8.16.11 @ 6:00AM

You know? At least she's not stuck on hope and change. Those poor two words have really been abused and misused and will never be the same. I am counting on getting a good look at the 0bama grades after he's bounced out of office. I am sure it is riddled with passes .....

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 11:55AM

"Hope" and "Change" sounds pretty good to someone who's been brutalized by their employer, then laid off for some bottom-line excuse (after all, most businesses' goal is to make a profit -- and it's the rare business larger than 100 employees that actually cares as much about them as the profits).

Am I to conclude you think Profit and -- well, there's no other name for Individual Freedom coupled with No Regulations coupled with Class-based Laws -- Anarchy are the watchwords America should adopt?

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:21AM

Brutalized by their employer? Shazam, sounds like one who has been FIRED WITH CAUSE FOR INCOMPETENCE to me. Do you perhaps have first hand knowledge of such occurrances?????????

Smarty| 8.16.11 @ 7:42AM

So she didn't get a free ride scholarship for being a negro who can read- she paid her way and went to a school full of those middle class people that liberals pretend to love. Interesting how liberals pretend to be concerned about ordinary people, but really they only care about the ivy league set and the welfare scum- the leaders and the followers- kind of how the communists view things. They hate that dang upwardly mobile middle class.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 12:04PM

She was about 9 inches too short for a basketball scholarship. She made enough money off her two ventures into the world of beauty pageants to pay for a few semesters. Apparently she waited tables in a fishing village to pay for more semesters.

You seem to have a pretty weird notion that "negros" and "liberals" don't also wait tables, work summers on fishing trawlers, or lifeguard in order to afford another year of school.

I hear a lot more about the sons and daughters of megarich politically connected Texas oil barons going to Ivy League schools than I hear about poor "negro" men and women waiting tables and doing manual labor in order to achieve that goal.

In other words, Sarah Palin has more in common with the latter than the former.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:29AM

Yeah, most sons and duaghters go to ivy league colleges because mostly, like their parents, they've worked hard in school, increased their intellect through learning their assigned study material, scored high scores on their SAT's and EARNED THEIR RIGHT TO THEIR PRIVATE HIGER EDUCATION; not like some worthless 'NEGROS' who have been subversively promoted for infiltration into government from childbirth and been back-doored into their attended private schools. Or like the Michigan Law School illegal affirmative action policies that granted preferential status to 'NEGROS' over much more educationally qualified NON-NEGROES perhaps??????

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 8:13PM

Oldefarte, you are a liberal's dream, because you come right out and say all the ugly things conservatives deny make up the Palin constituency.

In fact, I'm going to be linking to your comments, and pasting them, to illustrate some of my points regarding paranoid thinking and prejudice. So thank you, bigoted caps-lock man!

rdman| 8.18.11 @ 12:54AM

MrsPolly| 8.18.11 @ 8:40PM

"Playing the X card" is a handy whine for people who are being called on their bad behavior, but it's about time to retire that worn-out excuse.

G.W. Bush didn't work hard to get into Yale: he was a legacy. All kinds of whites have coasted on their parents, as well as, in Sarah Palin's case, looks. If she had looked like a mud fence, she'd have ended up a guard in a women's prison, where her barracudism would be welcome, I'm sure.

O.F. starts with the assumption that Obama and other people of color don't work hard or get good SAT scores. That's prejudice. When he hears the truth~~Obama graduated Harvard magna cum laude, an honor only accorded to stellar students, and having nothing to do with race, O.F. ignores it and sticks with what he wants to believe. And that is bigotry.

RCV| 8.18.11 @ 1:48AM

Julie | 8.15.11 @ 8:56PM

First, Palin knows Dailycaller has the reputation of being one of the most pro Romney web sites, and has never been very favorable towards her. Why wouldn't she suspect Pappas' intentions? Also, Pappas did leave out a lot of Palin quotes from that day that imply she's endorsing no one ... Why is it that Scott Conroy is only writer who gets the full Palin scoop. Palin sensitive with press? Guess you don't think Christie's constant scream fests don't show any insensitives?

Ron Butterfield| 8.15.11 @ 9:05PM

Did you not read the second paragraph of Pappas' story? It says Palin "is also undecided about whom she would endorse if she ultimately decided against entering the race."

Kelly Mother| 8.16.11 @ 8:08PM

How do you know Pappas left out alot of quotes from Palin? Were you there when he was questioning her?

simon templar| 8.15.11 @ 9:12PM

It really is amazing. I have been wondering lately where our little deranged liberal trolls have been. Other than Alan Brooks, it has been a slow day for them and perhaps vacation season as their boy's approval numbers have tanked below 4o percent.

Jake| 8.15.11 @ 10:01PM

Palin's diva behavior has been long known to Alaskan media .
Frank Bailey documented the many times she would take minor contretemps
and unnecessarily blow them into giant brouhahas.
Palin has spent the last week in a burning bridges frenzy.
She retweeted an article that attacked the records of Governors Perry ,
Romney and Pawlenty.
She made snide comments about Governor Perry and Michelle Bachmann at the Iowa Fair.
She's proven herself to be unprofessional ,
juvenile , petty , paranoid and her antics are
quite frankly , tiresome.

dougx| 8.15.11 @ 11:36PM

She is very petty. I don't remember politicians doing this in the past. If you went to Iowa and NH, then you were running. She's just jerking people around to sell books. I think it's almost despicable.

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 3:12AM

Well, there is one thing I am certain about. She could kick your panzy limpwristed liberal boy's ass quicker than you could say,'help me Obama."
Doug thinks it is despicable! Oh, my!

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 12:14PM

Name ONE instance she's literally kicked someone's ass.

From what I recall, she's merely dropped hints to one of her most devoted followers -- Robert Stacy McCain is a good example, or her close associates Ivey Frye or Kristin Cole, or, until he was kicked under the bus for taking a hit for Palin, Frank Bailey -- to look into a perceived enemy's background.

Then the threats, innuendoes, viral e-mails, letter campaigns, calls to reporters to deliver a scoop story surface, and voila! The enemy drops out of sight.

At least until this latest mistake of Palin's -- where she disparaged a Juneau citizen once too often, and now he's suing her.

Believe it -- Sarah Palin is highly unpopular in her home state. Why do you think she resigned her post as governor so quickly and without explanation? She knew her support was dwindling. Lots of Alaskans simply cannot stand her.

Dewayne| 8.15.11 @ 10:29PM

Wow, quoting Frank Bailey? Now there's a reliable source!

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 12:20PM

Ever heard of a "come to Jesus moment"?

Evidently Frank Bailey holds his faith and his family as paramount importance to him, no matter how belatedly he found it was more important than absolute unwavering loyalty to Sarah and Todd Palin was.

Am I to surmise from your comment that ANY criticism of Sarah Palin is therefore suspect as not "reliable"? Who would qualify as "reliable" in your eyes, if her closest political aide from 2006 to 2009 isn't?

Certainly not Joe McGinnis, idiot!!!!!!

Pierce Hall| 8.15.11 @ 10:55PM

Quin, seriously, this is an overreaction to an overreaction.

This story (if it even rises to that level) died on Saturday. Both sides acknowledged that there was a misunderstanding by the Palin folks. Hardly the first time that's happened in the world of political journalism.

I understand that Pappas is a buddy of yours, but this post is really a bit much. Palin's a diva because she pushed back (sure, wrongly) against sensationalist newspaper tactics that have been used against her in the past? No.

Campaigns and candidates themselves yell at reporters all the time. Reporters, by the way, yell at campaigns and candidates, too. Sometimes its justified, sometimes, no but still it's a part of the job. One could argue that the real lack of professionalism is coming from those who are using this silly incident to prosecute their long twilight struggle against all things Palin.

BD57| 8.16.11 @ 2:06PM

Like you, I don't see what all the fuss is about ... where Quin's concerned, that is.

His basic point - "Not a good idea for a politician who has issues with the press to be shooting at the friendlies ..." - is valid.

If Palin doesn't have aides smart enough to figure out what was going on before they brought the story to her attention, then she should get some. Whoever staged the little "Politico" show did her a disservice.

Beyond which - no matter how unfairly the press has treated Palin, their actions don't justify her treating any particular member of the press unfairly.

From the sound of it, in this instance, she wound up accusing a reporter of doing something he didn't do, and, on top of that, she didn't do it privately, one-on-one.

That's just not right - no matter how sound she may be on most policy issues, it's not right.

Bob K.| 8.15.11 @ 10:55PM

Quin,
The consensus here seems to be that Journalists are self important, self righteous prigs who are more concerned with their own feelings and careers than they are for truth, veracity and the reputation of the so-called profession they occupy.

I have to agree with that consensus.

RETjr has a Coogler award for the worst written book of the year. If he was an honest journalist he would also have a Walter Duranty award for the most sycophantic, bootlicking, backstabbing, lying, journalist of the year!

jeannebodine| 8.15.11 @ 10:59PM

This has got to be satire. Any piece that refers to "innocent reporter" has got to be satire, right? Plus the over-the-top outrage & righteousness of the author is funny too. "How dare Palin make a mistake & mistreat us after all we've done for her?" And it even has Politico "witnesses".

Hilarious. Keep 'em coming!

Darklady | 8.15.11 @ 11:59PM

What do you mean "'How dare Palin make a mistake...?"

Sarah Palin does not make mistakes. She has never made a mistake and she never will make a mistake.

Clearly the original writer intended that Palin's bosses would write a misleading headline and that's why he wrote the story in the first place. That's why the press dude didn't bother to apologize for anything; just called to make sure that scumbag "journalist" knew they'd figured out his game.

Remember, Sarah has a degree in Journalism. Or Communications. Or whatever her Wikipedia page says today...

I feel sorry for Palin. She is the incredible shrinking woman. She will do anything to find a reporter who disses her. The problem is no one cares enough anymore to diss her. The liberal media actually want her to run, in the vain hope that she will win the nomination. In any event, she is not running. She's reduced now to a mere curiosity.

Palin's IQ clearly matches the thickness of her skin. She's proven that time and time again. She's a quitter who has failed miserably in all offices she has held. How did my party of Reagan become saturated with dingbats like this? Anyone who would knowingly vote for this lightweight to lead this great country truly needs to do some deep reflection.

simon templar| 8.16.11 @ 3:20AM

Surly Curmudgen| 8.16.11 @ 11:14AM

Tawd; Failed miserably in all offices she has held, Riiiiiight!

Palin’s record includes a term on the Wasilla Council, two terms as Wasilla, AK Mayor, a stint as Chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and gas Conservation Commission (which she left to almost single-handily take down the corrupt GOP Establishment in Alaska.
House Bill 3001 for awarding a contract to TransCanada Alaska for developing and building a pipeline stretching for 1,715 miles from the Prudhoe Bay treatment plant to Alberta Canada.

Natives of Alaska had dreamed of a pipeline for more than 30 years. Sarah Palin in less than two years got the bill passed and the framework is now laid for them to move forward with the project.

House Bill 4001 and Senate bill 4002 were signed into law by Governor Palin on August 25, 2008. SB 4002 pays $1,200 to each resident who qualifies. The money for these payments comes from the state's natural resource revenue. This bill also suspends the state's tax on gasoline.

The funding in fact tripled for these special needs children education.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the 'bridge to nowhere' that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars."

Alaska's S & P's rating went up while she was Gov.
Reduced her own $68,000 salary by 10%, although by mid-1998 this was reversed by the city council. Fired the cook the state provided.

In 2008, Wasilla's current mayor credited Palin's 75 percent property tax cuts and infrastructure improvements with bringing "big-box stores" and 50,000 shoppers per day to Wasilla.

Polls taken in 2007 showed her with 93% and 89% popularity among all voters.

You left out the good parts:

How she mismanaged (through appointment of incompetents) the Alaska DSDS overseeing Medicare/Medicaid clients.

http://www.adn.com/2009/07/14/.....grams.html

How she ignored the starvation and fuel shortage emergencies of winter 2007 and winter 2008 in Western Alaska.

http://www.thealaskastandard.com/?q=node/317

How she sided with the open mine interests wanting approval to dig for uranium, gold, copper, etc. at the headwaters of Bristol Bay, putting at pollution risk the finest salmon fishing grounds anywhere. Sayonara "wild Alaska salmon" in your grocery store if that mine opens.

nytimes.com/2008/10/22/us/politics/22mining.html

There's more, if you're interested. Palin's
promotion of prison privatization,
her failure to pay income and property taxes,
a hunting-safari-friendly (profit) attitude toward prey and predatory wildlife,
being blessed by a witch doctor from Kenya (funny coincidence!),
her peculiar relationship with Big Oil (taxing them until they bleed; then promoting R&D on Federal public lands),
her bizarre claim in 2008 promising to be a spokesperson for special needs, then only giving speeches for charities if she was paid her going rate (haven't heard any special needs speeches lately, either, have we?)...

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 11:37AM

Wow, shazam, now I'm really impressed from your sourced material. You're no doubt on of Eric Holder's DofJ internet conter ops to argue on conservative news sites, right?????????

MrsPolly| 8.17.11 @ 8:26PM

Got nothin, do ya, O.F.? "Counter ops." Oh, Lordy, if only!

Wasilla had to hire a town manager because Mayor Sarah was not so great at the actual day-to-day mayoring. And the Oil and Gas Commission? She hated the job, and whaddaya know, she QUIT.

BSDetectorIsOn| 8.16.11 @ 2:50PM

Goodness gracious! Such an uninformed comment. Thanks for the laugh. The only success I give Palin credit for is being successfully elected... except for the times she was not!

Once she was elected mayor, the real power in town realized how incompetent she was and forced her to hire a city manager. Hence, the approx $4,000 cut in her $68,000 salary. Sarah was never a city manager (as I have heard her claim during her FOXNEWS appearances)---- she HIRED one. Her crowning achievement as mayor: she forced the city into a $20+ million debt to build a (still today) money-losing sports center. A loss that includes a lawsuit settlement of $1.2 million because the title to the land was unclear... a fact that Palin was aware of, but still, stubbornly, pushed on. The city could have gotten the land for less than $200,000 had she been a better business person, not to mention a better servant of the people!

Palin later went on to run for Lt. Gov and lost. She wanted Gov Frank Murkowski to appoint her to his senate seat, but he thought she wasn't qualified so she was given a consolation prize--- a position on the Oil & Gas Commission. Sarah was the layperson on the Commission. Never an expert. She could have learned something about O&G, but she QUIT. The job was too hard, so her excuse was that her fellow commissioner, Randy Ruedrich, was "corrupt." (Sarah loves a grand exit. It distracts her fans from the truth.) He was using Commission time to make GOP party calls. (Something she herself did when she used mayoral time and resources on her Lt Gov campaign!).

As Gov, Palin worked with the Dems to raise taxes on O&G companies... and used the proceeds to BUY her high approval ratings (the real indicator are her numbers after the 2008 election when the scales fell off the eyes of Alaskans).

As for that bridge to nowhere, she pushed for it until she realized it was fruitless, but everyone already knows that.

As for the pipeline... hah! more like pipe dream. All Palin was successful in doing is giving away half a billion of AK taxpayer money to a Canadian company. AGIA is a failure. After several open seasons, the O&G bigs have declined to sign on. Please do yourself a favor and read up on it.

Palin never took down any corrupt GOP establishment. That was a federal investigation of which she had no part.

I could go on about how Palin's budgets were not the cost cutting junkets she claims, but you should do some of your own legwork. Google is your friend.

This brings us to her quitting the governorship. She did that because her celebrity career was calling. Nothing more. That nonsense about $500,00o in legal bills (which Todd now claims is $700,000) is just that: nonsense. How can an attorney billing less than $200/hr rack up $700,000 in fees when, as Palin and her attorney both claimed: the ethics complaints were frivolous AND MOST DID NOT EVEN REQUIRE INVESTIGATION (translation: no time spent, hence no billings). MOREOVER, the state later allowed her to submit her legal bills for reimbursement, but SHE NEVER DID THAT. What those bills would have revealed are approx $250,000 in legal bills as a direct result of Palin's own self-complaint in Troopergate. The self-complaint was a McCain campaign strategy to get Palin out of the crosshairs (lol) of the bipartisan AK Legislative Counsel independent investigation that found Palin GUILTY of ABUSE OF POWER. If you recall, the RNC in 2009 or 2010 paid Palin that $250,000 in exchange for "work" she did for them.

Finally, what has Sarah Palin done for special needs children? Has she used her celebrity for that purpose? I think real parents of special needs children could school you on that.

Yeah, I agree the legend behind Sarah is fun, but as Peggy Noonan said herself, it's just a BS narrative.

Puny and/or dwindling crowds for her paid and free (like this past weekend) appearances ?

Oh, yeah, you think Palin is going to leap into the GOP race and win the nomination by popular acclaim, by dint of her sparkling personality and awesome intelligence....

Both of which were on glaring display this past weekend.

Sorry, but I offer only facts. You can easily look them up. No point in changing history because the truth is quite adequate.

I'm not sure who you think is wandering off in Sarah's direction. Her second book flopped, her movie tanked, her appearance at the Mall of America was almost ignored, she commands "crowds" numbering in the 10s (yes, tens) and the bus tour, well that was just sad. It's only at events where there is a ready-made crowd that one need use all fingers and toes to count the people. And didn't the crowd at Hannity's show in Iowa make their wishes known? No Sarah for Prez! It seems that only the MSM is following her around. Heck, if it were not for the lame MSM pushing Palin down our throats, we wouldn't know Palin was still around.

When anyone who doesn't identify specifically as conservative or Tea Party positive points this kind of histrionics out, it's "sexist" and evidence of being a "hater" or "jealousy" or whatever mud one has to fling. What's happened is that she's finally turned that under-medicated sense of martyrdom in the direction of a few more friends. It's not like everyone who has ever supported her throughout her career hasn't eventually been tossed under her metaphorical bus.

After 3 years, it still amazes me that anyone in this country... anyone on this planet, can actually, truly, seriously, for real!, honestly and with no glint of mischief in their eye, consider Sarah Palin for ANY public office in politics. Ever. She may be clever and savvy with her media image (though that seems to be waning and mis-firing lately), but I am forever astounded that there are people out there who actually think that this woman could lead our country. Really? I've asked why, on blogs, forums, on Palin-friendly sites, and never once has anyone answered anything else than "she is patriotic/goodmom/refreshing/ etc etc all those stupid, repetitive talking points that Palinbots build up. No one can counter point-by-point her failings with a real conversation and follow up. The fact that she hired a city manager to do most of her job when she was mayor of Wasilla. The fact that she ran up huge debt while mayor and left the town more in debt than when she started. The fact that she actually can't speak in factual statements - she only ever uses talking points and repetitive phrases like "commonsense conservatives". The fact that she ran Alaska like a socialist's dream-come-true governor. Never, ever once, in the last three years, can anyone counter it with anything other than replying with either something that has nothing to do with the conversation, or using an answer that slams or attacks the writer (me), but not the argument or why it is false. And it is because there ARE no real, honest and factual arguments that can be made that say that Sarah Palin was a good Governor, that she would make a good president (gee, she's someone I could knit with!... like the George Bush... "he's a guy you could have a beer with".... so f-ing WHAT! That's a requirement for dealing with all the things a President has to deal with?!?!). How can any of you, if you really reflect on this, say that you would want this utter selfish, media-hungry woman with NO world experience what-so-ever, run this country?!?! It's like it's a bad joke, some absolutely ridiculous joke that is so silly that it barely deserves more than a chuckle. And for those of you who say the media or bloggers "attack" her Down's Syndrome child or any other of her children? Are you KIDDING me?!! NEVER has the left/liberal media said anything bad about Trig himself. Those that diss Bristol, Willow, Track do so because their mother has put them in the spotlight (quick, name ANY other politician's children), and because, Bristol especially, goes after the limelight SEVERAL times and makes herself fair game (oh, um, and she is an adult). What you think are disses on Trig, are, if you take the time to read and actually comprehend, points about the utter weirdness and unlikeliness of a woman having contractions one month before her due date, during the Texas speech (her words in Going Rogue), carrying a Down's Syndrome child, leaking (her words again...not made up crap from bloggers), catching a flight to Seattle (not even bothering to go get checked out by a doc at the first-class hospital near where the convention was), not getting checked out in Seattle, NOT... I repeat NOT checking in at the hospital in Anchorage where her freaking doctor was on staff, but instead driving to the hospital near her town and having her doc meet her there... where there is no neo-natal unit... This from a woman in her 7th pregnancy (again, HER words from her book - she had 2 miscarriages), high risk because of her age, carrying a DS baby, her 7th pregnancy, month-early contractions.... You.Have.Got.To.Be.Joking! Who DOES that? Not a normal person, ok, let's get that clear. This is BIG one for those of us who can't stand her for her lack of intellect or self-reflection. Why? Because it speaks to some insane state of mind. It's not some strong frontier woman characteristic. If I told any pro-life Christian "hey! I'm 8 mos preggers with a special needs baby; this is my 7th pregnancy; I'm 44! I'm having contractions and leaking fluid. I'm going to fly 10+ hours, and give birth at a hospital where, well, if there is a problem with my baby there is no neo-natal unit... OK?... they would say I'm out of freaking mind. So yes, we harp on this because she made it a story - those are HER words, which is why it's such a huge thing for us "libruls". I want a sane person in the White House, whatever their political identification may be, SANE, is the number one criteria. Oh, maybe she lied about the whole thing. That might be a wee bit troublesome as well no? Lying about such a thing in such exquisite detail? There is simply too much to go on and on about as far as Sarah Palin is concerned. It isn't possible to think Sarah Palin can be running any public office, let alone that of the Presidency, if you are true to your mental acumen and adhere to it. If you are following other body parts or emotions, then yeah, that will get in the way of your god-given deductive reasoning. When Sarah Palin is but a distant memory and a joke (like Dan Quayle), then I'll know all is well again. Until the next charlatan shows up. There's always one waiting in the woodwork to make fools out of the masses.

Why do you submit to Obama?"

When will conservatives wake up and realize we don't need these people---period? Their audiences would fit in a losing high school football team's field most nights.

The real nasty is by folks like you. You're obsessed with slandering the righteous.

Seek| 8.17.11 @ 5:55PM

The press is doing its job by asking declared and de facto candidates for president tough questions. Sarah Palin isn't above scrutiny. Nobody is "slandering" her by holding her to account, even though in her own self-righteous (not righteous) mind she sees herself as besieged and persecuted. And she's not popular either -- even in Alaska.

rdman| 8.18.11 @ 5:24PM

wodiej| 8.16.11 @ 8:30AM

Wow, whining from the press about so called unfair or unjust accusations? Now you know how Gov. Sarah Palin feels. It's ridiculous to think she purposely called over another reporter to overhear a conversation. She's got better things to do than play petty games w you people.

Amjean| 8.16.11 @ 9:07AM

Quinn, you have a juvenile attitude towards Gov. Palin. Did this really happen? What did the Palin camp or Gov. Palin herself have to say to you when you asked?

Since your way of receiving attention is to write
negative stories about Gov.Palin, perhaps your
wish will come true and your little article will go
viral. Then, perhaps she will respond and we will get the "rest of the story" or, more correctly, the truth of the matter.

Until then this is a nonissue.

Michael L. Hauschild| 8.16.11 @ 9:11AM

In the first place there are no such things as “good” reporters and “bad” reporters. Most reporters today are not witnesses, they are paid commentators. More often than not the story they tell is about them, and it make very poor copy. In this case a “good’ reporter to Quin is simply another pundit that shares his disdain for Mrs. Palin. You read what an honest “reporter” says to find out what happened, Greta (now, not with Clinton) and Baire are functioning reporters and the only place you find an increment of honesty at Fox. You read the likes of Quin to get his “take” or what he “thinks.”
This was simply another insufferable hit piece on Palin, what makes it unique is it fails twice; failing to defend a cohort in the MSM campaign to discredit Palin and its failure to do anything but reinforce the author’s bias. Quin, we value your input as an “insider” but despite your admonitions it is blatantly apparent that you hold both animosity and contempt for Sarah Palin as a candidate.
My take on this is that it is a unsupported tale of an insignificant affront about a totally discredited profession lamented by same.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 2:36PM

The funny thing is that ANYTHING the least bit critical of Sarah Palin, no matter how thoroughly fact-checked for truth and verification, even to quoting Palin verbatim, is promptly labeled by her small band of obsessed supporters as an "insufferable hit piece on Palin".

How awful! How sexist! How much Palin is a victim of the evil, cruel, mean lamestream media! Yet, what a wonderful President she'd make!!!1

OMG, Palin supporters are as bad as Paultards now. Good grief.

It's a well-known fact that Palin's staff are overzealous in their protection of their goddess; they are aggressive and off-putting to a degree that it tends to reflect on Sarah Palin after a while. Not just to the press or to the libs, I mean to EVERYONE. I'm sure it was that Mansour woman or one of the other disciples, but Sarah Palin needs to get control of her staff. They are the most ridiculous bunch of amateurs EVER.

And I'm not in the press, I'm just a stay home mom in Alabama. I posted a question on her freakin' Facebook wall asking politely why she felt the need to respond to every single MSM slight, and not only was my polite, respectful question deleted, I was banned from posting again! One question! LOL! I'm sure you could find tens of thousands if not millions who have experienced the exact same treatment from her people.

Sorry, I've lost interest in Palin because I don't appreciate how her staff treats THE PEOPLE like we aren't worthy of her divinity. THAT is why you see things like "difficult diva with a rude streak!"

I will not be revisiting "The American Spectator" any time soon, and will definitely forego donating.

Right. Palin going off script has done her so much good politically in the 3 years since the 2008 campaign. It's fattened her wallet, but her populist support has dwindled to the tiny crowds at her movie, at her book-signings (that was only done to bolster the first of even tinier crowds at her daughter's book-signings)...

...and the events she has done that haven't been heavily publicized beforehand to lure media coverage....oh, oops, there haven't been any of those, have there?

karenw729| 8.16.11 @ 11:19AM

Sarah Palin is a spy. A Coup d'etat began with Sarah Palin's run for office in the 2008 presidential election.

She was planted as McCain's running mate for a reason. Everything about her is a total fabrication. If you think McCain and Sarah planned on "reforming Washington" by getting elected you're wrong. In addition, when a Coup happens the military doesn't announce it on the front page of the news. They try and keep a lid on it.

Whether you believe it or not it's the truth. Obama is not the president, he’s the acting president. He disappeared for 2 weeks after his election win only to reappear looking exhausted sitting next to John McCain, with a bad poker face, for a press photo shoot. Obama is now a Pentagon puppet.

Here’s what Obama, Osama, Biden, Bin Laden, the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists, and Sarah Palin had to do with the last presidential election and the military’s overthrow of our government. Search ElectNoMoreSpys.blogspot

I am done with you elitist, pompous jerks. If she runs she gets my vote. She is the most forceful candidate available. She will drill for oil. She will protect the borders. She will ban sharia law. She will cut ( there is no chance of ever totally eliminating ) the free flow of cash from corrupt lobbyists. She will enhance the military. She will grab the reigns of authority and manage them in a more sensible way.

Business as usual will be threatened. That's why hit pieces like this keep coming out. I will not be dismissed. If Palin doesn't run, I'll vote for Bauchmann.

Reposted from another thread....

Damn RSM and Quinn put on your big boy panties and get a grip.

I am certain Alex feels all validated now that you two have stood up for him.

You are not the story whether you had a good day or a bad day, whether you (or he) were treated as you thought you should be is not the story. Love her or hate her Palin has been attacked mercilessly in the press since the day McCain (John) named her as his running mate. Given what I have observed since that date I find it hard to accurately describe her as thin skinned, but if she has that flaw it will be put on display for all to see should she actually get into the race.

People will have an opportunity to make their best judgment about her in the primary and cast their vote accordingly. She will either win the nomination or she will not. One thing you can know for a certainty is that she will not get the fawning praise and active running cover that the messiah O received and continues to receive.

At this critical juncture in our history where we are looking for a candidate that can beat O and his entourage and the survival of our republic is in the balance, the treatment of a single reporter in a single event doesn't warrant a moment’s attention. If you girls want to bitch about it among your selves in the locker room after the game, great, but A.S. should not be wasting the space on such nonsense. You report on politicians for Pete sake man up and grow a pair or get off the damn field..

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:30PM

Taking lessons from Sarah Palin. eh? Making sexist comments? "...RSM and Quinn put on your big boy panties", "...if you girls want to bitch..."

Now I expect you to respond with a "I'm the victim" whine/attack, just like she does after verbally emasculating a critic.

Sapwolf| 8.16.11 @ 8:53PM

Thanks for posting that. I was surprised to read it actually here on A.S.

Margie| 8.17.11 @ 12:47PM

You are absolutely, positively RIGHT ON, Conservative Bob.
Thanks!!

Kyle| 8.16.11 @ 12:56PM

Don't blame Quin; I am sure he didn't chose the Palin picture for this article, just like Pappas didn't write the headline. I don't understand how a columnist doesn't get to write the title (a.k.a, headline). Am we supposed to believe that the columnist can write hundreds of words for a column but doesn't have the ability to write a good headline? Listen, like it or not, you writers are responsible for the headline too.

Quin| 8.16.11 @ 1:18PM

Sometimes reporters write their own headlines. Most of my headlines here at TAS are ones I write. But no reporter writes the headline for ANOTHER publication to put on his article. Pappas' article at the Daily Caller had a perfectly reasonable headline on it, and his story was accurate, and in no way made Palin look bad. But the bigger point is how rude Palin was. That was uncalled for, especially considering that she had no prior beef with Pappas, no reason whatsoever to believe he held any ill will towards her.

WL| 8.16.11 @ 2:03PM

I'm sure glad we have good conservatives out there looking out for us against the likes of the meany Sarah Palin.

Next, we'll be able to count on the local firefighters coming to our burning house and Exoriating the kid who left the faucet on...and got water on the floor...

That's about how stupid this kind of article is.

You can count on some things in life...

1. Democrats want your money.
2. Republicans always take the ol dive in a tough fight.
3. "Conservative" columnists will get all wee-weed up when a Conservative does anything they don't approve of (i.e. reinforces their status)
4. And finally...if you don't go along with the charade listed in #2, or you are guilty of #3, Quin Hillyer will be there ready to drop the hammer (or hacker) on you...and waste at least one column on the good ol circular firing squad crap.

BD57| 8.16.11 @ 2:34PM

Sorry, Quin - very few people "get it" ... the bunker mentality just takes over.

If the story's accurate, Palin (or staff) jumped to the wrong conclusion and chewed out someone who wasn't responsible for the headline to which they objected.

There are two problematic parts to the story:

#1: Do Palin's people know what they're doing?

They don't know what FoxNation is? No one followed the story back to Daily Caller to see what headline it was given? No one, you know, bothered to ASK Pappas about it before they brought Palin herself into it? And who thought "Hey, let's have Palin ream the reporter!!!!" was a good idea?

#2 - "and if all the other kids jump in the lake ...."

The press has issues with Palin; in fact, they're downright bitchy with her most of the time. Check. Got it.

Now then, what does being "bitchy" back gain her? Especially when she's being "bitchy" WITH THE WRONG GUY?

There's a very simple test of character that everyone gets to take over & over - "How long does it take you to get to 'I was wrong'?"

Sounds like someone in the Palin camp abused Pappas unjustly. It would be classy to fess up.

Teflon93 | 8.16.11 @ 2:40PM

You presume we should trust Quin's reporter friend because he's "known him since he was in junior high".

Sorry, makes no difference to most of us whether Hillyer personally vouches for him or not, given Hillyer's unhinged comments about Palin in past comments. He has an issue with her, as do most of the Establishment commentariat.

I suspect the reporter's junior high school bears little resemblance to those us Red Staters attended in any case, much less Palin's.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 3:02PM

You presume we should trust the report from the Palin camp via Palin followers?

So far all I've seen are "interpretations" of Palin's behavior filtered through the minds of various and sundry Palin fans. I've seen nothing from either Palin herself or one of her spokespersons explaining her behavior.

In fact, nearly every time the media reaches out to Palin for clarification of anything she's said or done -- because her word salad is sometimes nearly impossible to parse -- there's no response.

So, when they go with what she's said, verbatim, in the absence of clarification by her or her people, suddenly the media is the bad guy.

That's a roadmap of Palin's "I'm the victim" schtick, and it looks like the media is finally wising up. Thank you, Quin.

Margie| 8.17.11 @ 12:49PM

And you also can't stand Palin, so your comments are moot.

Erling| 8.16.11 @ 12:58PM

American Spectator is loosing its relevancy with this latest example of junior high commentary. How about sticking to serious conservative thought (Jeffrey Lord) and leave the nonsense to npr.org?

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 3:06PM

American Spectator should not be held responsible for the junior high commentary exhibited by Simon Templar and others of his ilk, Palin fans who persist in "the politics of personal destruction", i.e., personal insults and strawman arguments, and a litany of cherry-picked "facts" about their idol.

Sapwolf| 8.16.11 @ 8:49PM

Quin messed this one up and needs to apologize if he wants to keep any shred left of professionalism.

Joe Vogler| 8.16.11 @ 10:48PM

Yeah. Shred!

JimH| 8.16.11 @ 12:59PM

I posted this some days earlier in response to a posting about Newt at the debate. I think it may apply here as well.
For conservatives the media ranks below lawyers and used car salesmen so Republican candidates have learned to show indignation, real or feigned at what deem to to be inappropriate questions from the press, even Fox in order to score some points with the faithful.

Kyle| 8.16.11 @ 1:01PM

Does this site even have an editor anymore? I know people who actually subscribe to the print edition of this magazine.

New England Patriot| 8.16.11 @ 1:01PM

Quin, u r having a very public major panic attack at the probability that your personal RINO, Mittens, will have to run and lose against Sarah Palin for the nomination. Unfortunately, Rick Perry will be turned into ground chuck politically by the LSM forthwith and you had your hopes up about Mittens! Sad state of affairs,EH?

Joe Vogler| 8.16.11 @ 1:18PM

No no no, Pat, you couldn't be more wrong about Rickie. The media loves Rickie, Rickie loves Lizzie Cheney, and America Loves Its 1950s and Its Mommy and Daddy! I Love Lizzie 2012!

Quin| 8.16.11 @ 1:19PM

Clearly you haven't seen the many posts I have made through the years, and especially in recent months, wherein I absolutely lambasted Mitt Romney.

New England Patriot| 8.16.11 @ 1:42PM

So Quin, Conversely, Have you written anything nice about Sarah Palin lately or ever? Also, have you seen CNNs Don Lemon interview and coverage of Sarah palin at he same event? That is real, unbiased reporting on his part. What specific policy positions of Mrs. Palin do you have a problem with, other than that she is Sarah Palin? Her is a snippet of Dons work. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/sar.....tate-fair/ Any comments?

Teflon93 | 8.16.11 @ 2:41PM

The question answers itself.

Anthony| 8.16.11 @ 1:02PM

So Quin, you've finally emerged from the closet and have revealed yourself to be the buttboy of the R establishment.
What an absoute crock of trivial minutia, and SO WHAT if it's true, this is what you consider fodder for a TAS article?
Hell, this woman has earned the right to say any damn thing she wants about the reprehensible whores who make up the MSM, which now, includes you.
So what if she was wrong about the author of a headline, how about all the ad hominim lies and attacks on her that she has allowed to slide off her back?
Obozo lies more times in one sentence than Palin gets wrong about the media in one year. Your sense of proportion is way off kilter.
Hey, why don't you and Ben Stein pretend to be Mexican drug cartel leaders and get Obozo and Holder to provide you with more automatic weapons, a la "Fast and Furious", a story that you should be covering every frigging day!!!!

'........Sarah Palin can see Joe McGinniss from her house by Kathy Shaidle
Posted on May 25 2010 12:00 pm Kathy Shaidle.....Palin's photo of her new neighbor, Joe McGinniss Author Joe McGinniss (Fatal Vision, Blind Faith, The Last Brother: The Rise and Fall of Teddy Kennedy) has officially gone from just
a) that guy who got sued by a convicted murderer for pretending to be his friend to make money (!), and b) an accused plagiarist — to stalker. What else to make of Sarah Palin’s latest Facebook post? Spring has sprung in Alaska, and with this beautiful season comes the news today that the Palins have a new neighbor! Welcome, Joe McGinniss! Yes, that Joe McGinniss. Here he is – about 15 feet away on the neighbor’s rented deck overlooking my children’s play area and my kitchen window. Maybe we’ll welcome him with a homemade blueberry pie tomorrow so he’ll know how friendly Alaskans are. Joe announced to Todd that he’s moved in right next door to us. He’s rented the place for the next five months or so. He moved up all the way from Massachusetts to live right next to us – while he writes a book about me. Knowing of his many other scathing pieces of “journalism” (including the bizarre anti-Palin administration oil development pieces that resulted in my Department of Natural Resources announcing that his work is the most twisted energy-related yellow journalism they’d ever encountered), we’re sure to have a doozey to look forward to with this treasure he’s penning. Wonder what kind of material he’ll gather while overlooking Piper’s bedroom, my little garden, and the family’s swimming hole? If McGinniss’ name sounds familiar to you, but you still can’t quite place him, this might help: In the 2009 McGinniss began probing the explosive rise of Alaska governor and Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. He published a provocative and controversial article, “Pipe Dreams,” in the April 2009 issue of Conde Nast’s now-defunct Portfolio and in September he bid $59,999 on Ebay to dine with Palin.....'

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 3:11PM

He'll be back in that next-door-neighbor house in September to conduct interviews about his upcoming book on Palin. He's hoping to have Sarah make him that blueberry pie she promised last year.

http://www.joemcginniss.net/wh.....stakes/Joe McGinniss

Oldefarte| 8.16.11 @ 3:52PM

It's a shame that he can't [supposedly] write a book about someone without resembling a domestic terrorist by means of a neighborhood invasion. He would have bee up the creek without a paddle if he had attempted to write a book about UBL say a year ago, huh???????

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:42PM

What, did Joe McGinniss do any of the things Sarah Palin accused him of trying to do when she found out who her neighbor had rented her house to?

It was impossible to see in Piper's window, because Piper's window was about 10 feet higher than the ROOF of the house next door, let alone how much lower his rental-house deck was.

The Palins took an unauthorized picture of HIM, facing the other direction while he was on the phone to his family, and directed the TLC crew to include a video segment of him sitting on his deck minding his own business reading a book -- both with accompanying insults and slurs on Facebook and in the TLC series.

Sarah Palin actually suggested Todd spy on Joe McGinniss through a knothole in the fence.

Is that the normal behavior of a person who finds out their neighbor is a writer who has no personal animus towards them but criticized them for their part in the corruption surrounding the influence of Big Oil in Alaskan politics?

I don't see how that can be construed as "resembling a domestic terrorist".

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 10:41AM

What do you suppose was McG's intention in renting a house next door to the Palins? Do you think that same had any connection to his writing a book about them? Do you think that everyone should have THE RIGHT OF PRIVACY concerning their personal residence? Do you possibly think that if McG moved next door to the Kennedys in Hynnis Port, that there weould be repercussions from same? What would you do if a McG moved next door to you and began reporting on your private life????????

Margie| 8.17.11 @ 12:52PM

You sir, are one deceitful hack. (EMC).

JimH| 8.16.11 @ 2:00PM

Anthony| 8.16.11 @ 2:17PM

Quin, Upon reflection, forget what I said about you and Ben Stein pretending to be journalists and attempt to uncover the sordid details and criminalility associated with "Operation Fast and Furious". You and Stein ain't up for the struggle.
I'd like to make RET an offer. I'll take a 4 month leave of absence from my practice, and if TAS will cover my expenses, I'll CONNECT THE DOTS from the DOJ to Holder to Obozo.
I'll make the case to the extent the even the cowardly RINOs in Congress will have to draft articles of impeachment.
Don't those poor INS agents and their families deserve this? Doesn't America deserve the truth?
Oh, but maybe we shouldn't go there, it might reflectly poorly on poor , poor, bad luck Obozo.
RINOs for McCain in 2012!!!!

Teflon93 | 8.16.11 @ 2:42PM

McClame would be better than Romney. At least he had the sense to pick Palin.

Anthony| 8.16.11 @ 3:34PM

True that, but Romney finally had an unscripted moment when heckled by those loony lefties and finally acted like a MAN!!
Hey Romney, didn't acting like a real conservative feel good??? Try it more often.
Notice those loons were not castigated by the lefty press, but the poor guy who asked Obozo why Biteme refers to Americans as terrorists, was attacked by Dana Perino and the other Bush administration stooge on FOX.
I'm sure Quin and Stein share Perino's ridicule of this ordinary citizen who dared to ask Obozo a question!!
The establishment is going down in 2012!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.16.11 @ 3:57PM

Don't know what you're smokin', but you've obviously got a good buzz going on there!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.16.11 @ 4:14PM

Them there dots [I'll CONNECT THE DOTS from the DOJ to Holder to Obozo] have already been so connected. Might want to consider the dots from [1] Holder to Clinton to Rich or those from [2] Clinton to Foster or those from [3]Wright/Ayers etc to Obama; but of course, it's a tad late for that, right? Where was them there tea party folks THEN [when they were needed]?????????

Paul McGrath| 8.16.11 @ 11:43PM

I'll pay you four months of your salary if you can prove that you can write English in a coherent way.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 10:36AM

Four months, what's that....$400?????

Leslie Lowe| 8.16.11 @ 2:31PM

It's becoming increasingly clear that Mr. Hillyer doesn't understand Sarah Palin popularity, and her connection with conservative voters. The problem is Mr. Hillyer wants to be one of the "Wizards of Smart", one of those who said that John McCain was a winning candidate in 2008.

Teflon93 | 8.16.11 @ 2:44PM

Isn't it funny how the RINOs threw that bit of recent history right down the memory hole? They're trying to play the same game again: "You HAVE to run a RINO to appeal to moderates. No conservative can win. The media will destroy anyone but Romney, who they love. Just nominate him and see. It's his turn."

We've seen this movie---it always ends with a liberal Democrat victory.

We want a different ending---a Reagan ending.

Oldefarte| 8.16.11 @ 4:32PM

I agree, but I want a NON-DEMOCRAT ending instead. If it's Romney versus Obama, I'll hold my nose and crawl to the polls to vote for Mitt gladly!!!!!!!!

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:45PM

Then we'll get those taxes raised...maybe 11 times, just like Reagan did while he was President.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 12:51PM

Fool, Reagan didn't raise taxes [he did however raise governmental spending on the military]. Get your GD facts straight, and go back to your DofJ cubicle!!!!!!

Dave| 8.16.11 @ 2:45PM

I don't care what these "journalists" and so-called "fair" reporters do, say, or profess - I like Palin.

They, including this one who authored this piece, continually attempt to smear Palin. They use every tactic known, even pretending 'Oh, I like so-n-so and I know so-n-so and this isn't really attacking them, I just want to say...' in the pursuit of their zealous persecutions.

I'm just amazed that TAS is going more liberal every day.

Soon we'll read pieces of why Satan is a great guy and how Hitler was a hero.

Sheesh.

p-squared| 8.16.11 @ 2:50PM

Maybe Pappas and his pal Hillyer should grow some skin as well. Palin is attacked 24/7 by "reporters" and "correspondents" like yourself, so when she responds perhaps a little understanding on your part is what is required.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 3:55PM

Well, she promised to serve the people of Alaska 24/7/365, but she certainly reneged on THAT promise.

http://bojack.org/2008/10/pali.....lot_t.html re: the governor of Alaska being "on duty" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year...

That alone is worthy of scorn from the Fourth Estate, if not anybody who ever believed a word she said.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 12:49PM

Yes, and Clinton promise to OBEY THE LAW SO HELP HIM GOD once upon a time; but it just depends upon WHAT THE MEANING OF IS, IS right???????????????

Connie | 8.16.11 @ 3:19PM

All I want to know, is Palin going to run for President or not? Many people just wait to see what comes out of her mouth everytime. Does she still have time to announce if she is running or not? That is what I am waiting for.... Well I guess, we'll see..

Sapwolf| 8.16.11 @ 8:45PM

Yes, she said she will decide in Aug. or Sept.

Let the vetting of Rick Perry go forward as he has to prove himself. Stuff is now coming out that is pretty bad in his record.

But let's stick to the facts like Quin didn't.

Paul from SA| 8.16.11 @ 3:35PM

They (the headline) lied about her. They deceived the public. She got mad. I am mad at the press, and I still support Sarah, despite this hit piece.

They know, endorsing Romney is not a respectable position. They lied. They are guilty.

Why would they lie about her to the public? What's their motive? Why attack Sarah? Why do elitist Republicans hate Sarah, me and my type so much? Why attack people like me?

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 3:40PM

Attention Quinn Hillyer:

It seems one of your own contributors, Stacy McCain, has done some actual reporting on this situation, and has debunked your account of events:

"What is false about the developing media version of the Palin-Pappas narrative, according to McCormick and others, is three things:

1. Governor Palin did not personally dial up Pappas’s number. She asked around among her aides if anyone knew how to get in touch with Pappas. One member of her advance team, Jason Recher, had Pappas’s number, called him and hand the phone to the governor.
2. Governor Palin did not summon a Politico reporter to listen in on the call. Palin was in the middle of a gigantic crowd of people at the Iowa State Fair, and her half of the conservation may have been overheard by others. There was no way, amid the press of the throng, that anyone outside that swarm could have been summoned at all, and the idea that Palin would be doing favors for a Politico reporter is ridiculous.
3. Governor Palin wasn’t screaming angrily at Pappas. Again, Palin was in the middle of a crowd, which was quite noisy, and if her voice was loud, it was because she was trying to make herself heard amid the hubub."

Are you going to reconsider your intemperate, angry personal attack on a conservative's character?

We'll see who is in fact the "difficult Diva" in this whole business.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 4:17PM

1) What, is Jason Recher (who was once on the JOHN McCain campaign team) some kind of stealth political destroyer? Shouldn't he have found a quieter venue to call Pappas? Did it have to be done RIGHT THEN, PRONTO, NOW?

2) If there was "the press of the throng...and if her voice was loud" wouldn't that in itself served as a summons to "anyone outside that swarm"?

3) And who in their right mind would have tried to hold a casual conversation, let alone a contact with a reporter -- whose occupation is to REPORT even conversations with political candidates whose amateurish aides dial up phone numbers for them -- in what Robert Stacy McCain calls a "hubub" (sic)?

Even McCain either purposely or foolishly missed the point in his "attempt to clear up the misunderstanding": he said in the top of his clarification, "A headline appeared online suggesting that Palin had endorsed Romney, and Palin decided to personally intervene to correct the record."

But RSMcCain NEVER said that it was the Fox headline, which the reporter had nothing to do with.. He NEVER said that the reporter's own headline and his Twitter mentioned absolutely nothing about an endorsement.

Just another Palin-fan whitewash of a situation Palin herself and her enabling aide Recher had generated singlehandedly.

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 5:03PM

Actually, you are wrong.

The underlying story is that Palin being really upset about a suggestion that she is supporting Romney. Why? Seems a little over the top anger.

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 5:05PM

Stacy McCain's report debunks the notion it was an "angry" phone call.

Go read his account.

He actually called some people and did some real reporting, instead of flying off the handle with a half-baked personal attack without knowing what actually happened.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:49PM

Of course, his report is hearsay, second-hand information. Who really knows if the information was buttered up and sugared to reflect a little less badly on Sarah Palin?

Another site that routinely butters up and sugars reports on Sarah Palin, and even more routinely attacks critics on other sites, and refuses to even allow comments by critics there at C4P.

I guess, though, Palin does need at least one place where the remarks are 100% in her favor.

Oh, that's right, her Facebook page is that. OK, TWO places...

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 6:16PM

How about the blog of one of Quin's very own AmSpec contributors, Robert Stacy McCain?

That good enough for your lofty standards of neutrality?

He is in the Herman Cain camp, by the way.

RSM is the source of their post at C4P, and they called the person he talked to independently as well.

Quin is wrong on this one. Period.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 12:39PM

REMARKS ARE 100% IN HER FAVOR, geez i thought you were possibly referring to Pilosi and the MSM perhaps!!!!!

Joe Vogler| 8.16.11 @ 5:25PM

Well folks, I must say it's been an amusement and delight to view this rending and tearing and gnashing of teeth, this marvelous display of petty vindictiveness and vain calumny so strikingly emblematic of the individual we sighted ones occasionally call Quitler. For this one day, you witless acolytes of your Queen Esther provided a relief from the generally bleak landscape while you turned and savaged your "conservative" fellows for their perceived apostasy.

Not so very amusing in the long-term however, as we know your eyes will never be opened and you all will quickly enough turn to become the slavering shock troops of the vital and wondrous Governor Parry (remember to spell it with an "A," for "America." "A," for... well, even you benighted fools can guess the rest, I'm going to suppose).

Goodnight, good luck, and Tawd bless.

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 5:36PM

What an idiotic statement.

Your mother must have dropped you on your head when you were a hatchling.

Joe Vogler| 8.16.11 @ 5:44PM

Good comeback, you. Bravo. So very cutting...

By the way... Where is Trig?

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 6:12PM

None of your business.

larryG| 8.17.11 @ 2:41AM

Very eloquent babbling.

ReneePA| 8.16.11 @ 5:33PM

Governor Palin is a class act. The description in this article does not fit her character. Be man enough to do your job and report the facts. Don't just make things up. If you want to write fantasy stories try writing some fairy tales. If you want respect as a journalist then earn it by being fair and honest.

EMC| 8.16.11 @ 5:54PM

Is there anything in your statement that is verifiable by a neutral party?

I thought not. It's just your opinion. Pffft.

Sapwolf| 8.16.11 @ 8:41PM

Yes! Yes there is!

Michelle McCormick was standing right next to the Gov. when Quinn alledges falsely that she completely freaked out and chewed them out when in fact she had to raise her voice due to the noisy crowd around her. And the part about Politico being somehow invited to listen in was pure BS. Not only do we have an eyewitness who was there, but the idea that Palin would give the PDS people at Polutico access like that is ridiculous.

Quinn, when's the apology coming, Mr. man of journalistic integrity?

EMC| 8.17.11 @ 12:54AM

I noticed in the various debunking reports including the one from Stacy-at-C4P that Michelle McCormick never denied that Kasie Hunt of Politico wasn't already right next to Sarah Palin. So Hilyer got that part awry. Sue him.

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 12:34PM

It's HILLYER, idiot...learn how to spell!!!!

Oldefarte| 8.17.11 @ 12:36PM

RCV| 8.16.11 @ 5:38PM

Quin: As a regular TAS reader who posts here often, I don't agree with you on much, but I always enjoy and respect what you write. I'm always amused, however, at how fickle and thin-skinned some of the conservatives on this site are. If you deviate an inch from their prescribed line, you're set upon rabidly like you were some traitor to the country!

Keep up the good work. And by the way, you're a lot smarter than a certain bloviator who attacked you, and certainly a helluva lot better writer.

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 5:40PM

In this instance, he's just plain factually wrong, and on top of that he engaged in a very nasty, borderline sexist personal attack on a good conservative who has gone through a lot of crap on our behalf, as he himself admits.

Congratulations, Quin, you just added to the pile.

Lucas M| 8.16.11 @ 5:50PM

"If you deviate an inch from their prescribed line, you're set upon rabidly like you were some traitor to the country!" Hyperbole to the nth degree, from the beginning to the end. Quin is being informed that he is smearing an important conservative leader with false accusations. He should have issued an apology long ago. The longer he waits, the worse he looks.

Where were you?

Oh yeah, 1,000 miles away.

Amusing, indeed.

Anommynous| 8.16.11 @ 5:52PM

Wow, Quin, I even see that you were able to find an unflattering picture of Mrs. Palin to go along with this story to really drive the point home. That was really clever!

Brian72| 8.16.11 @ 6:12PM

No kidding.

I wonder how long that took.

RCV| 8.16.11 @ 6:39PM

bellagrazi| 8.16.11 @ 6:26PM

I think there needs to be an apology, but not by the Gov., by the person who blew this whole episode out of proportion. One Quin Hillyer. Sarah Palin is a very gracious person. She will accept your apology. Now get to it.

http://conservatives4palin.com.....wrong.html

smokedaddy| 8.17.11 @ 9:41AM

You beat me in posting the link. It looks like Sarah has already forwarded her apology. Time for Quin to do the same. He's let his personal feelings for Pappas twist his presentation of his "facts" . I'd suggest consulting AS reporter Stacy McCain. Lets see his account on this site!

Lucas M| 8.16.11 @ 6:35PM

Quin, smearing Sarah Palin with a cheap shot smear based on falsehoods is bad enough. Refusing to apologize, when it is clear you did that, is worse.

Mickie Maloney| 8.16.11 @ 6:48PM

You really should get your facts straight. You must have forgotten Governor Palin was in a crowd of people and they witnessed her side, not only of the conversation, but that she didn't make this phone call as you state. There are those who are happy to refudiate your false allegations.

New England Patriot| 8.16.11 @ 7:08PM

on Getting the Facts Straight on Quin Hillyer’s and Politico’s Stories 4 minutes ago

Ed Schultz and his cohorts are hammering Rick Perry with the most vile charges of racism and lynching innuendo as we speak regarding POTUS Obama and Bernanke. Rick is a good man and unfortunately for patriotic Americans who would like to hear informed discourse from the candidates, Rick Perry will be ground chuck before the month is out. Sarah Palin is a true grandmaster in the art of politics, waiting until September 3rd or so to get in the game. Even now, CNN's Don Lemon realizes that Sarah Palin may be the nominee should she run, and as everyone knows, Access is everything in news reporting. Sarah may get better and more balanced and objective treatment from here on out from some actual "reporters" EG;Don Lemon, unlike yours truly, Quin Hillyer, behaving like a hack and shill for the "establishment" Republicans.

Hero of the State George W. Bush declared Mission Accomplished a year after invading Iraq, despite OBL living for 8 more years without any effort from Bush (in fact, he cut the budget of the CIA intelligence teams).

...Despite the war fronts Bush began, still going on years after that declaration.

Gosh, must keep that military industrial complex doing a booming business that so many Bush/Cheney cronies invest in!

Rich D| 8.17.11 @ 1:26AM

Wrong. The banner was for the men on the ship who put it up because THEIR mission was accomplished, not the total effort.

Everyone knows including this slimey Quinn that the Daily Caller is doing a non stop Romney PR blitz. No one including Palin wants to be linked to that loser. The so called poor reporter had the responsibility to call Fox nation and pull the story/headline but he let is stay to help promote Romney and got caught! Cry me a river.
By thway , Lefty Troll Hank posted the EXACT same phony concerned BS comments about Palin not being tough plus I see his fellow Obots-Left wing deranged Palin haters have followed suit .
Lets list off a SMALL selection of vile hate filled attacks by Axelrod, Obama,DNC, Obama -Soros media and haters like Hank and Dacron have thrown at Palin in just two years :
1 Falsely Accused her of not being the mother of her child Trig but spread stories it was their teenage daughter 's baby!
2. The Axelrod Soros media created Loathsome stories, TV Shows , and Cartoons about her Down Sydrome Son Trig.
3 Spread false rumours about her having an affair with a family friend
4.Spread false rumours about her and Todd divorcing
5 Defending herself from Thousands of false legal complaints by Dems Party operatives as Gov and she had to spend millions of her own money to defend herself.
6. Had a far left Soros Media operative move next door to spy and harras her and her family( Yes the Kids too)
7. She and her children had their lives threatened and been stalked by Dem party operatives with cameras and camcorders trying to provoke them
8. Had thousand of Soros media operatives rifling thru her email to find DIRT
9 Was falsely accused by the Soros Media of causing the shooting of a Dem rep.
10. Second oldest daughter had false rumours spread about being pregnant.
The left wing nutters like Hank and the other Obama-Axelrod smear posters would be placed in a padded room having to deal with 3 of these false accusations made by the Obam media.
No politican in modern times has been so vicously attacked NON STOP in the public eye.
BUT Pres Palin will be stronger for it.

Lucas M| 8.17.11 @ 11:18AM

Out in Iowa, the Palins got wind of the story and went ape shit. The former Alaska Governor complained as only a member of the Palin clan would, “Those dang reporters.” Politico‘s Kasie Hunt was in the vicinity. A press aide ushered her in closer as Sarah Palin angrily phoned Pappas.

Get the truth here: http://conservatives4palin.com.....wrong.html
Liberals have been viciously attacking Sarah Palin since 2008. (Rush Limbaugh points out this shows who they fear.) Now we have some Republicans smearing Palin with cheap shots because they fear she may run and defeat the presidential candidate they support. This helps explain how stupid Republicans often enable Democrats to win elections they should lose.

Seek| 8.17.11 @ 6:01PM

Palin's negatives are so high, they're off the charts. No way in hell she'd get the nomination. And if she did, Obama (whom I did NOT vote for) would clean her clock. The GOP mainstream is right to avoid her.

Olivia C.| 8.17.11 @ 6:06PM

Quin,

She's down and out in Beverly Hills now.

President Obama won because it was excruciatingly easy to beat a tired, foolish Patriot and a plucky, unteachable woman during a time of crisis.

Governor Perry is on fire, right now. I'm an indee, so he has to earn my vote.

He's attractively aggressive. The key to his success is likely to be found by securing the 'married white male vote.' Keep an eye on that number.

Lucas M| 8.17.11 @ 7:04PM

Yes, Olivia promote your candidate, Perry, by attacking Palin with lies. That will help Perry very much. This is another example of how stupid Republicans help Democrats to win elections they should lose. You and Quin deserve each other.

apodoca| 8.17.11 @ 6:22PM

This article by Hillyer is a cheap shot and a lie. Think of the ambience during which Palin made the call and realize that speaking loudly was a necessity. Palin doesn't owe Politico anything and has no need to embarrass a "Conservative" journalist by calling over a Socialist one to listen. That's not how Palin operates. "Conservative" journalists, however, do have a clear and verifiable track record of running Palin down and attempting to turn people against her. Quinn Hillyer, more of the same, piled higher and deeper.
