If you wanted to see abject fear you should have watched the Orin Hatch explaination of why he was going to vote "no." He actually said, and I parapharse, "All this trouble we are in was not caused by me," (lie) and, (are you sitting down) "I was the original Tea Party representitive. (whopper)" I listened to that and actually burst out laughing. The only thing that could have made the interview better would have been if his comments were interspaced with the sound a toaster makes.
Wayne | 8.2.11 @ 1:26PM
He forgot to say: "I asked Mc Connell if he needed my vote, and he said no, so I was free to vote NO."
Siegfried X| 8.2.11 @ 1:29PM
That's a big victory for the Tea Party. If this vote had happened 5 years ago, Hatch and McCain would have taken turns holding Ted Kennedy's hand while they voted for his tax increase
Oldefarte| 8.2.11 @ 1:38PM
Hatch, McCain etc did NOT provide political financing and support [and vote for] Barack Hussein Obama. Teddy Kennedy and his liberal Democrats did so successfully by using their MSM minions to brainwash voters with HOPE & CHANGE. Granted they are a secondary part of the problem; but the primary part is: Durbin, Pilosi, Reid, Clyburn, Conyers, Schumer, Frank, Wassermann-Shultz etc. Concentrate on the main element of the problem first!!!!!!!!
Siegfried X| 8.2.11 @ 2:00PM
I agree. _AFTER_ the Tea Party, Hatch and McCain started acting like Republicans again. That's my whole point. But _BEFORE_ the Tea Party, in the 2000's, Hatch and McCain were the Democrat's best "bipartisan" friends.
McCain faced a conservative in the primary last election, and Hatch is up for reelection next year and is expected to have a tough conservative opponent in the primary. They were afraid of losing, so they starting acting like Republicans. So the Tea Party adjusted the attitudes of those senators, which is a good thing.
Oldefarte| 8.2.11 @ 4:02PM
I agree with you 100%. Both are expendable. McCain should have been defeated last year but was not. Hatch is up next year and is protecting his rear in recent pronouncements. My theory though is that the primary focus should be on Democrats first, then these wayward Republicans. Again, McCain/Hatch did not initiate Obamacare, non-stimulus etc spending; BUT OBAMA, REID, PILOSI, CONYERS, SCHUMER, CLYBURN etc did do so!!!!!!!
Siegfried X| 8.2.11 @ 1:31PM
This also will probably be the last bi-partisan vote about deficit reduction in this Congress. Democratic leader Reid is already saying they won't pass a deficit reduction package without tax increases, which means that the automatic across-the-board cuts will kick in.
Oldefarte| 8.2.11 @ 1:33PM
As indicated this deal stinks worse than a dead skunk, and its only accompolishments are possibly avoid a credit rating downgrade and a slowing down of governmental spending. There will be no true solutions to this problem if/until the taxpayers begin voting intelligently. While arguing with some here, its now obvious to me that some of you apparently either don't understand the significant differences between Republicans and Democrats or simply know but refuse to acknowledge that difference. The essential tipping point of this problem when this nation elected its current president in November of 2008. Its still dumbfounding to me that this even occurred, as he was/is the most liberal senator/politician that the Democratic Party contained. Previously, a political war occurred within their party between the liberal faction [ie the Kennedys] and the moderate faction [the Clintons], and the former won the battle and thereafter financed and promoted our current president. Their party was well aware however that they could not win the WH without disguising their liberal candidate and propagandizing him as a average, justlike you, everyman [which was a complete falsehood designed to get him votes and elected president]. The American public was brainwashed by them and their minions within the MSM, and the public voted STUPIDLY for this extremist, radical street-merchant from Chicago [who cut his political teeth with Acorn type political corruption]. The public was bombarded with their HOPE & CHANGE bullexcrement and bout it hook, line and sinker. When he came out of his liberal political closet and revealed himself as to the radical that he was/is by conspiring with Pilosi, Reid and other liberal Democrats, the tea party nation was established over the outrage resulting from same. Getting back to my point, the American public [and especially some of these tea partiers] still don't obviously have the ability to see these liberal Democrats for who/what they are and are still being brainwashed. They're combining all DC politicians into a THEM category, instead of making a useful distintinction between the parties and their platforms. These DC Repuublicans are lackadasical and forgetful of the fact that they owe their allegiance to their constituent-voters back home, but they are not Democrats. These Kennedyisk Democrats now have full control of their party and are ruthless and don't give a damn about anthing other than their own political power. They are in the political control of our government [again thanks to our voting stupidity in 2008] and they have/will cram down America's throats their social legislation that causes the present defecit/debt at the expence of taxpayers. They conspiratorially use their gained governmental power to institute social/welfare legislation in order to enlarge the public's dependency upon governmental services and to correspondingly force the voters to re-elect them in return for their granting of this welfare. When the tea partiers refuse to acknowledge the party differences, they are playing right into the Democrats' desired intentions and playbook. Since there are only two parties, if the tea partiers reject Republicans and vote instead for Democrats [as they did in November of 2008 for the current Democrat president], then the Democratic Party has once again succeeded in brainwashing America. I understand tea partiers and all of us conservatives' frustration with this semi-worthless debt deal, but understand that the only solution desirable will come in November of next year if you elect more conservative Republicans to replace current Democrats DC office holders. If the Senate and the WH come into Republican hands/control, then your desired budget reduction of substantial proportions can then be enacted and government spending can be cut in large amounts [by eliminating governmental departments, programs etc that waste taxpayers' money and are the cause of this defecit/debt problem]. I'll conclude by saying a special THANK YOU to the tea party movement of patriots out there who have heroically begun this battle. We all owe you a great debt of gratitude for your courageous fight, but we must all put aside our differences over specific agendas, vote the straight Republican ticket, provide more ground troops to DC freshmen etc Republicans who are fighting for us taxpayers, and we will one day soon hopefully get the desired conclusion that we all strive for!!!!!!!!!
Michael L. Hauschild| 8.2.11 @ 7:51PM
" if the tea partiers reject Republicans and vote instead for Democrats [as they did in November of 2008 for the current Democrat president],"
If you actually believe that, you simply have to be the dumbest dweeb to ever post a sentence at AS.
RJ| 8.2.11 @ 1:52PM
It looks like most of the GOP are on the same side as the statist Democrats and are happy to play the role "Generals" basketball team which plays like foolish losers against the Harlem Globetrotters. Under this deal, Obama and the Democrats get: 1 more debt; 2. more spending; 3. the debt ceiling taken off the table for Obama's reelection; and 4 tax increases for the "rich" on the table for Obama's reelection. The GOP got nada. What a group of losers and they seem proud of it.
Oldefarte| 8.2.11 @ 7:28PM
The Democrats didn't get excrement! El Chosen One wanted no spending cuts originally and they kicked his ars on that; then he wanted tax increases and they told him to go fly a kite; and now his radical-liberal base is about ready to run him out of DC; so how is that winning anything? great job, Barry!!!!!!!!
Pecos Pete| 8.2.11 @ 2:02PM
Debt is now 17 trillion dollars and growing.
At noon today, the Dow Jones Industrial Avg is down -183.04 / -1.51% at 11,949.45. Seems like there is a skunk in the debt deal.
Siegfried X| 8.2.11 @ 2:06PM
This deficit reduction deal is a tremendous victory for conservatives. Spending cuts with no tax increases -- it doesn't get any better than that. No one could have done better considering that we have a Marxist president and senate. If we want more deficit reduction, then we need to elect a president who thinks like Paul Ryan, along with a senate to match.
Obama and the Democrats promised tax increases, and they had to eat their words. No new taxes.
TruthSayer| 8.2.11 @ 3:29PM
Idiot. The debt explodes to 17 trillion under this great 'conservative' deal. There are no real spending cuts. Future congresses will never agree to them. Guess what, moron. The United States is NEVER going to repay that debt. NEVER! You know why? There is not enough income in the world to repay what the US owes. There is one way out, however, and it is guaranteed - It's called inflation. Get ready you fools, hyperinflation is coming. Economic calamity, hunger, riots, lawlessness, and the end of the Republic.
But hey, congrats to Boehner, Obama, Reid, and McConnell. Instead of being locked up the insane asylum where you belong, you get to run the government and destroy whats left of our great country.
Oldefarte| 8.2.11 @ 4:15PM
Before you continue slandering others with your half-truths, consider that most rational people do not like this deal. Also it SLOWS DOWN/CONSTRICTS THE SPENDING, as opposed to the Democrats' desire to INCREASE/EXPLODE THE SPENDING. Obama originally wanted a 'clean' bill of a ceiling increase with no spending cuts. Then when confronted, he requested tax increases. It ain' Boehner/McConnell and the rest...it's Boehner/McConnell [Republicans] AGAINST Obama/Reid etc[Democrats]. The inflationaly increases of spending can be effectively destroyed if Republicans obtain the Senate/WH next year and can thereafter issue governmental budgets eliminating departments, agencies and their budgetary spending allowed. The amount of Republican Bush's debt/defecit was tripled by Obama/Democrat in 2 1/2 years. The problem has been/is /forever will be .....DEMOCRATS!!!
