Well, that was a brief victory for the speaker of the House. As expected, the Senate rejected the Boehner plan by a 59-41 vote. All Democrats voted no. Six Republican senators -- Lindsey Graham, Jim DeMint, David Vitter, Mike Lee, Orrin Hatch, and Rand Paul -- voted against Boehner, opposing the plan from the right. (Note that Hatch must really be worried about a primary challenge.)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn't going to allow a cloture vote on his own plan tonight, but Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is already crowing that the modified version is the "only game in town." Today's dueling congressional votes could set the table for a Reid-Boehner compromise. But in order for anything to the left of the Boehner plan to pass the House, the Democrats will need to guarantee some votes to offset Republican defections. The current version of the Boehner plan passed without any GOP votes to spare.

Reid and the other leading Democrats, however, don't sound like they are in a negotiating mood.

We lose again...walked down to the water by these rubes and liars...Again....dunked...again....ridiculed...again....whipped into line....again....and we'll vote fore them in 2012...again...and they have an excuse the too...again...and when we disagree....Hilyer will tell us to grow up...again....and Antle will tell us the strategy....again...until it fails...again....just like it will this time.....a g a i n....

WL, you are right...this is what betrayal feels like.

I did have high hopes for the Tea Party elected representatives, but I now see they can be purchased and bullied, just like the rest of the GOP.

And I have read that the Tea Party has not yet committed to support a primary challenge to Orrin Hatch...They are losing steam, and abandoning their stated principles. Hatch has been a part of the problem for decades. Just like McCain, he will Not Change His Spots except in campaign mode.

Bob Grant| 7.30.11 @ 9:28AM

Betrayed? How?

You DO realize republicans control 1/2 of 1/3 of the government, don't you? Cut, Cap, and Balance at this time does not have a chance. That's reality. Do you really believe if republicans held their ground on CCB and BBA and we go into default with all of the associated repercussions they would survive without major political damage?

You have to work with what is possible. That's politics.

Obama will come out of this looking weak, intransigent, and ineffectual which is what we want. Republicans need to at least appear to want to compromise while seriously addressing the debt crisis. This was the only option.

Remember the eye on the bigger prize which is the presidency and control of the senate. This was the only pathway toward that goal.

Teflon93| 7.30.11 @ 10:05AM

And YOU must realize that Obama and the Democrats CANNOT spend more money or get the debt ceiling raised without the Republican House?

Why give the GOP power if they don't use the power they have to advance the cause of conservatism?

You people think electing Republicans is an end in itself.

Wayne | 7.30.11 @ 1:29PM

Its not 1/2 of 1/3 of the government, but rather it IS 1/3 of the government. I see this all the time. Also because of checks and balances it is a necessary 1/3.

simon templar| 7.30.11 @ 10:49AM

We were not betrayed by the the Tea party candidates but rather by the old guard progressive establishment GOP as always. They held their ground despite the insults and betrayal of their own GOP leadership and the onslaught of pressure and slander from the media and many parts of our own political landscape and tent. The problem is we are being led into war by generals who are suspect, weak, and really do not know what they are doing. They are calling the plays and battle strategies. As we are losing some of these battles and retreating, they are turning on their troops, blaming them, and shooting them. Our group does not have the leadership positions but are foot soldiers right now. That is going to change.

Wayne | 7.30.11 @ 1:32PM

They used the Tea Party. First they assaulted the hold outs for not "going along". Then they use the bill as a shell that Reid can not use to put in his own plan. Then when it returns to the House, they will no longer NEED the tea party people because the Democrats will line up behind it. The terms of the Boehner bill were meaningless. What was important was to shift the blame to the Tea Party.

Wayne | 7.30.11 @ 1:34PM

Sorry, shell that will now be used by Reid. But may I add, the purpose was to isolate the Tea Party candidates. Remember Alinski, isolate, target then assault.

simon templar| 7.31.11 @ 3:28PM

Wayne, that was a really good analysis! You are spot on!

PCP Smoker| 7.29.11 @ 10:01PM

This is it? This is the result of the greatest push by RINOs and DC Cons since the last time they supported a weak kneed GOP idea? All of the huffing and puffing and it ends like this? GOP= Losers

Sean| 7.29.11 @ 10:31PM

So all the pundits were wrong. A vote for Boehner plan is really a vote for Reid. If we get a compromise I guarantee its 99.9999% the Dems want. Hey but we will get a promised reduction in future spending 10 or 20 years out.

Teflon93| 7.30.11 @ 10:11AM

This is the transparent stupidity of Boehner and his backers: with divided government, everything comes down to reconciliation.

Going into reconciliation, if you're at $900 B in spending ceiling increase for $1 B in spending cuts next year, and the Senate comes in at $2.7 B in spending ceiling increase with $0 in spending cuts next year, I guarantee you the final results going to be a higher ceiling and no cuts. Republicans already gave the game away with this WEAK initial bill.

The starting position should have been no debt ceiling increase and $1 T in spending cuts next year to undo the Obama/Pelosi/Reid spending orgy. This would have had the salutory result of demonstrating GOP seriousness about spending cuts, reinforced the base and the Tea Party, put the party on the side of 60% of the American people, and put the Democrats in the position of having to defend bankruptcy. The final reconciled bill would then look a lot more like Cut Cap and Balance---mild spending ceiling increases, steep front-loaded spending cuts.

Boehner and the "geniuses" who admire him know nothing of strategy, tactics, or negotiation.

LC Jackboot| 8.1.11 @ 3:35PM

That Sir IS the issue. Political maneuvering has all the same aspects as military operations. Our side NEVER seems to have LEADERS, obviously with some exceptions. We just can't seem to get somebody into the House or the Senate that's impervious to that Swamp Fever, go along, get along to get reelected.

Kyle Smith| 7.29.11 @ 11:46PM

The GOP should hope that the Reid bill gets near unanimous support from the Democrats. That way, only the light bulb banning wing of the Republican House will have to stick their necks out to vote YES on the Reid Bill for it to pass to avoid the predicted apocalypse.

"Mark Meckler co-founded the Tea Party Patriots in 2009 with Jenny Beth Martin as congressional Democrats pushed forward with their health-care overhaul. The TPP is now the nation's largest Tea Party group, with 3,500 chapters, and is playing an outsized role in the debt-ceiling debate. But if John Boehner is taking orders from the Tea Party movement, it's news to Meckler. In an interview with Patricia Murphy, Meckler gives Boehner a "D" for handling the debt crisis so far, and blames decades of compromise in Congress for the nation's runaway spending. He calls Boehner’s plan an “embarrassment,” warning that Republicans who vote for Boehner's debt-ceiling increase will hear from Tea Party groups at the polls next year."

I don't know why anybody's surprised by what's happening in D.C. We've all known since the Hobbits first came out of Tealand, that this was going to be a long drawn out battle, with many setbacks along the way, but we're making great progress overcoming the evil that's overtaken the land. We've exposed the traitors within our ranks, and we have the means to deal with them, and we will, in time. But the Epic Battle is a long way away still, and the summer soldier, and the sunshine patriot, won't be there when it starts. But that's okay, we never expected that they would be, and we don't need them there anyway, we never did. We're winning this War, even though at times, it doesn't look like we're winning anything. Have patience!! It took a Century to get to where we are, it's going to take awhile to undo all the damage that's been done by it, but it can be. One Step At A Time!! One Battle At A Time!! The Good Guys always win in the end!! The World will keep spinning, and the sun will come out tomorrow, I promise!! There's no alternative anyway, so what the hell?

jocon307| 7.30.11 @ 9:49AM

You are right and folks need to get their minds right on this.

The left fights day in and day out for DECADES, we fight for not even one year and are ready to throw in the towel.

This infuriates me.

Forget all this 3rd party talk, if for no other reason than we need the GOP infrastructure.

Teddy Roosevelt couldn't get re-elected president on a 3rd party ticket and it ain't gonna work for Sarah Palin or anybody else.

Ask Al Gore about the Green Party, you'll get an earful.

Wayne | 7.30.11 @ 1:46PM

Well Ron Paul states that the deck is stacked against any third party and independent. The only thing feasible would be a 3rd party presidential candidate. It would not be such a bad thing in my opinion. I think the best government we had was Clinton with a GOP congress. Now Reagan was a better President, but he had to deal with a Democratic house that lead to bad decisions on taxes, debt and amnesty. A president with only a plurality and an opposing party that controls congress could actually lead to some good legislation. At any rate I would not fear it.

The bill just rejected by the Senate is more a negotiating move than anything else. Look for a
backroom deal Monday and quick votes to approve followed by Obama's signature.

simon templar| 7.30.11 @ 10:37AM

Well add this to the mix, check out the headline on the Fox web site...Washington Races to Avoid Default... the lines below as well....."As Congress holds a rare weekend session to find a solution to the debt crisis, lawmakers and the White House frantically search for a last-minute deal to avoid the first-ever government default."

This country really is f&^%ked up when the so-called conservative network puts crap out like this buying into the narrative and distortions of the opposition and the lies and scare tactics of a party that can do nothing else but lie and manipulate. The so-called fair and balance is... we will be fair and give both sides and opportunity to sling horseshit and will be sure we have a balance of this horseshit from both sides. Truth..whats that? To hell with the truth.

simon templar| 7.30.11 @ 11:00AM

Let me tell you a secret about warfare. There are times when you may lose but you actually win. The issue here was not whether we got what we wanted or this bill contained this or that, or everyone was in agreement, or whether we had enough or did not have enough legislative and government power to get it done. The real issue and aim is to play the game (the conflict) smart and use it as an opportunity to change the perceptions and nature of the game. This is exactly what the RINO's and establishment GOP failed to do. The objective should have been to break out of being played by the Dems and regaining control of the narrative not the outcome. Listen and listen carefully, conservatives. They key is the narrative. The Left has known this from the beginning. Do you understand?

Teflon93| 7.30.11 @ 11:30AM

We've already lost, since in reconciliation the debt ceiling limit will be even higher and the spending cuts even more backloaded and illusory, while the whole spectacle will have convinced the public the Republicans STILL don't give a fig about restraining spending and the conservative base and Tea Party are alienated from GOP leadership.

Sometimes it's all cloud, no silver lining. That's when men gird their loins and make ready to unleash hell.

And it ain't going to be Tammy Faye Boehner or his Howlin' RINOs leading the charge.

Well I found out some things that really surprised me. One is, and did you all know this the budget is raised 7.5%? Every year? It's added everyyear
ie $ 100 x 7.5= $ 107.50 x 7.5%=115.56x 7.5...on and on. Since Nixon, runaway budgets and NOW we've reached critical mass!
Number TWO is the ....the degree of back ally deals and the way the Republicans treat the new folks and literally mock the folks that put them in power. It's all a charade. The WHEELER/DEALERS are a disgrace! To go back to the PENNY PLAN that Connie Mack has put forward, his coharts must be furious with him...he let the CAT out of the BAG! This plan sounds like it is jst the right thing to control the spending. This also....the entrenched law-makers better wake-up and getting some real healthy RESPECT for the TEA-PARTY folks or seeing themselves go the way of the extinction!

Wayne | 7.30.11 @ 1:47PM

We need the penny plan. We have been bamboozeled on the debt talks. It has cooked in tax increase, debt increases and obamacare.

How many tea party patriots does it take to change a lightbulb? Ten million and five: One to go to Wal-Mart and buy a lightbulb (and a gun because he’s going to the store anyway), one to scoff at global climate change, one to draw a rally poster making fun of Al Gore, one to complain about the socialist conspiracy to bring light to all Americans, one to change the bulb, and 10 million to sit in the dark even though the light is on.

“Knock, knock.” “Who’s there?” “A communist-fascist dictator.” “That’s impossible — communism and fascism are at opposite ends of the philosophical spectrum.” “You’re supposed to say ‘a communist-fascist dictator who.’” “Fine. A communist-fascist dictator who?” “Oh, never mind. You’ve ruined the joke. I’ll go next door to the tea party patriot’s house.”

What do Fox News and pâté have in common? They’re both popular with crackers.

Did you hear about the new e-Beck from Amazon? When you click “download” it whines about socialism for an hour and then breaks into tears.

What’s the difference between Cinemax After Dark and a tea bag convention? One’s a show about people who are agitated over stimulus packages and the other is a group of people with their mouths full of balls.

Why did the tea party patriot miss the anti-tax meeting? She was too busy driving on taxpayer-funded roads, sending her kids to public school, living in a safe neighborhood, drinking clean water, breathing clean air, enjoying public parks, using public lands, buying safe products, eating inspected food, and enjoying countless other services funded by tax dollars, but this isn’t shaping up like much of a punch line, so let’s say she ate so many bologna and cheese Hot Pockets that she was too fat to fit into the public library meeting room.

Why did the tea party militia fail to stop the spread of socialism? Because they forgot to write “Ready, Aim, Fire!” on the palms of their hands.

Why couldn’t the tea party patriot afford to go to the NRA rally? Because he spent all his money buying unlicensed guns at the flea market.

What’s the difference between Tiger Woods and a tea party patriot? One’s a half-black linksman with ass on his mind and the other’s a half-assed thinksman with blacks on his mind.

A liberal, a conservative and a tea party patriot appear on “Good Morning America.” George Stuffenenvelopes asks them how they’d solve the economic crisis. The liberal says, “We should tax the rich and provide health care for all.” The conservative says, “We should cut taxes on the rich and run up huge deficits on endless wars.” The tea party patriot says, “We should neither tax nor borrow nor spend. We should drill, baby, drill before the Nazi death panelists take away our freedom and destroy the nation. Abortion! Terrorism! Ditto! Git-R-Done! Obamanation! Freedom! Pit bull! Dale Earnhardt!” Noticing that the conservative has been violently twisting the tea party patriot’s nipples, George Snuffleuppegus says, “What’s going on?” The conservative says, “Oh, sorry about that. I was just tuning my AM radio.”

Mankind finally destroys the planet, and Sarah Palin, John Yarmuth and Barack Obama all arrive at the pearly gates at the same time. When Palin steps forward, St. Peter says, “I’m sorry, ma’am. This will probably come as a shock to you: No Christians are allowed in heaven.” Yarmuth steps forward and says, “What about me? I’m not a Christian.” St. Peter says, “Sorry, sir, no Americans are allowed either. The Lord has ruled that absolutely no Christians and no Americans are allowed into the kingdom of heaven.” And Barack Obama goes, “SWEET!”

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and a tea party patriot walk into a bar. The bartender says, “I’m surprised to see you guys together!” The tea party patriot says, “Why are you surprised? All of my beliefs are based on the principles of the Founding Fathers!” Jefferson says, “Indeed, I wrote, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal’ while schtupping my slaves.” Washington says, “I too was a slaveholder. And as ‘father of our country,’ I led the military against my own citizens in the Whiskey Rebellion because they refused to pay taxes.” And Franklin says, “Yeah, I pretended to be a Puritan, yet rarely attended church and fathered an illegitimate son.” The bartender says, “So what you have in common is that you’re all hypocrites?” “No,” says Franklin. “What we have in common is that we’re all living in the 18th century.”

You're welcome Oldefarte!! I'm one of those Tea Partiers you're thanking here today, and I also happen to be one of those Troops that you're talking about here too (although I'm back here at FT Bragg, North Carolina at the moment, I'm not currently deployed). The Tea Party is not the bad guys here, and if it wasn't for the Tea Party, we wouldn't even be talking about any of the stuff they're talking about in Washington D.C. right now, like cutting spending, or changing the way they do anything!! This is a FIRST!! A FIRST in the Debt Ceiling debate History!! The raising of the Debt Ceiling has become so "normal", and routine and expected, that the Media is just trying to find a Boogeyman to blame for it not being normal this time around, and the Tea Party's the perfect boogeyman for them to blame!! That's alright by me, we'll take the blame for holding our elected officials accountable for their campaign promises, we'll take the blame for reducing spending (or at least trying to reduce spending for the first time since,... well the first time ever!!), we'll take the blame for it all, if you're looking for someone to blame who's just trying to do the right thing for a change. I thought you liked the Tea Party, Oldefart? In the last couple of days though, you're making me think I'm wrong about that? I am the "Boots on the Ground", and I've got to tell you, you should check out who wrote that article about the troops complaining to Adm. Mike Mullen about not being paid. Take it with a grain of salt, it's not a proven fact!! The Military is being used now as a Pawn in these negotiations, and you know which Party is using us, don't you? Yep, that's right, the Party that hates the Military the most is using us!! Does that make any sense to you? It doesn't to me!! The Boogeyman, is this case, is the same one it's been in every case, since I can remember, and that's the Party of Death, the Party of Tax and Spend, the Party that admits Communist among its ranks, the Party that founded the KKK, the Democratic "F***ing" Party of America!! Not the Tea Party, we're the guys with the White Hats on, waving the American Flag, we're the Good Guys!! Don't lose faith, and don't believe all the hype!!

LLL: If my recent post offending you or any of our military members, please accept my sincere and heartfelt apology. I would/will never do anything purposely to offend you that defend our country. Since 9/11/01, I have displayed an American flag magnetic emblem on the back/trunk of my car as a sign of THANK YOU and respect to the families of all of our military members, WHO MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT BY THEIR UNSELFISH SERVICES TO US ALL. That said, my recent posts have only been with the intent/purpose of directing humor and argument as some of these distasteful, slanderous, ugly etc comments/post by some commenters/posters here [and you know full well WHO they are]. They are NOT true tea party members [the tea party members are/have only exhibited honor and dignity in their protests and are honorable, patriotic people no doubt], and are probably the previously described Justice Dept Democratic operatives that are paid to blog with conservative websites to smear conservatives and promote the president's/Democrats' political agenda. They are counter-intelligence operatives bent upon destruction of the Republican Party for the benefit of the Democrats. Tea Party people would not perform such personal destruction opining/activities. These morons are using verbal filth, smears, sexual slang words etc to oppose/argue against conservative Republicna women; calling Boehner/McConnell/Republican representatives/senators traitors and worse. True tea Party people/members would not do so, but instead would rationally put forth their arguements/positions in a reasoned, purposeful manner, but in a polite sense [since we're supposed to be all conservative Republicans in the broader sense, right?]. So it is this latter grouping here that I'm referring to AND NEVER A TRUE PATIOT LIKE YOURSELF, OKAY??????

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 7.31.11 @ 7:29PM

No need to apologize to me, I never took your words personally anyway!! I've got a sense of humor (I jump out of planes for a living after all), although some of the Soldiers here in my Company, would be surprised to hear that I do have a sense of humor, and probably wouldn't believe it anyway. I'm just glad you haven't "turned" on us, because we can't afford to lose any troops to the other side in this never-ending battle against the Party of Death, the Democratic Party. But I know "who" you're referring to too, and I can understand your frustration dealing with "who", but I don't think "who" is actually a Democrat Operative sent in here to undermine our discussions, he just doesn't seem that smart to me to pull that off (but who knows?). I just think "who" is a bully who hides behind their computer, and if you were to meet "who" in the real world, you'd probably think "who" was a nice, well mannered person. But while "who" is hiding in the basement surrounded by their collection of Ron Paul for President posters, "who" feels very emboldened to force feed their views on the very people who are "who"'s natural allies. "Who" can be a big pain in the ass sometimes!!
