This afternoon, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Ervin
Santana
threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. The Angels won
the game 3-1.
So how did the Tribe get a run without the benefit of a
hit?
Well, Santana's no-hit bid began
inauspciously. Indians' leadoff hitter Ezquiel Carrera reached
base on an error by Angels shortstop Erick Aybar. Carrera then
stole second, reached third on a groundout by Asdrubal Cabrera and
then scored on a wild pitch uncorked by Santana. The Indians had a
1-0 lead going into the top of the fifth.
Santana's no-no is the third no-hitter of the 2011 season.
Interestingly all three no-hitters have been tossed by AL pitchers.
Minnesota Twins southpaw Francisco
Liriano and Detroit Tigers ace
Justin Verlander threw no-hitters against the Chicago White Sox
and the Toronto Blue Jays, respectively.
Curiously, all three no-hitters have been thrown on the road.
Historically, nearly two-thirds of all no-hitters are pitched
in front of the
home crowd.
Now I know what an Angel executive was referring to today at
lunch when he gave us tickets for a game next week saying that we
have a 1 in 5 chance of seeing a pitcher who has thrown a
no-hitter.
This game reminds me of the almost double no-hitter that took
place in 1965. Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game, while Bob
Hendley pitched a one-hitter. The Dodgers only hit did not figure
in the one run that was scored in the game. It would have been
something to have a hitless game.
