In addition to the bombing in Oslo, there has apparently been a shooting at a summer camp on the island of Utøya (the shooting may be ongoing -- reports are sketchy). Why a summer camp? This report from yesterday gives a good idea of what Utøya is, and why, if you wanted to terrorize Norway and were evil enough to open fire on unarmed teenagers, it would make a logical target:

Around 1,000 young supporters of Norway's Labour Party were making their way over to Utøya this week, an island in the Tyrifjord that's often viewed as an incubator for future Labour Party leaders. Detractors call it a breeding ground for a relatively small clique of would-be power mongers.

The summer camp for members of Labour's youth group AUF (Arbeidernes ungdomsfylking) has launched the political careers of many a Labour Party leader. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was a fixture at the camp in his youth and remains keen to visit every summer. Both he, Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland were due to make appearances at this year's camp during its five-day run that began Wednesday.

As of now there are reportedly at least five injuries.

UPDATE 2:42 PM: Norwegian media is now reporting 20-30 deaths. Horrifying, if true.

UPDATE 3:05 PM: The gunman has been arrested; he is said to be a blond-haired white man, 160cm tall (about 6'3"). The New York Times has picked up a report that a terror group called Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami (the Helpers of the Global Jihad) has issued a statement taking credit for the attacks; if it turns out that the shooter is indeed involved with the terror group, it's a reminder that you can't tell a Muslim extremist by his skin color.

UPDATE 7:24 PM: Norwegian police are saying this does not seem to be connected to Islamist terror, so I guess the actual lesson from the Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami statement is that Muslim extremists lie.

This is just another example of what appeasement does. Norway did do a thing or two that might upset Militant Islam but they have divested from Israel I believe and are in general more in sympathy with Muslims than most Nato countries--ditto Sweden.

Well.. it's just ONE bomb. Norway have dropped 519 bombs in Libya and I'm sure quite a few in Afghanistan.

What comes around goes around.

As a Norwegian I've always said we should have our troops in our own country for defense. No need to perform actions abroad. They can do their own job.
This might be a good reason to move the government to some hillbilly place where access is easier to control.
Then they could knock down these ugly buildings in Oslo and build new skyscrapers so the lack of flats can be dealt with.
Too bad people got hurt though. In terror most of the victims are innocent.

Looks like the Islamic hillbillies have rented some upscale skill sets.... A dozen of these guys could wipe out a large school with little or no trouble at all in most western countries before government help could have arrived.

This blog will probably come to the conclusion that this should be treated as an exemption from a rule, and thus not worthy of drawing any further conclusions from. Of course not, what does an American blog know about the political antagonism that exists between right wing extremists over here in Europe and socialists such as the youth that were killed at Utöya? More details on the "Summer Camp":

Here's a report from Norway's online news site, Politisk.
It is dated last Thursday, 21st July ... the day before the massacre at Utoya.

The picture is of Norwegian Foreign Minister Gahre-Store on a visit to the AUF (Workers' Youth League) 'campers' at Utoya. After being escorted around the camp by AUF leader Eskil Pedersen, the campers demand a boycott of Israel and that Norway recognize the Palestinian state.

To which the minister reportedly replied, to cheers from the 'campers': The Palestinians must have their own state, the occupation must end, the wall must be demolished and it must happen now.

Whilst this doesn't change the fact that this was a monstrous slaughter of innocent kids, one has to ask who is this Pederson guy and to what lengths has his Workers Youth League gone to incite impressionable kids with such hatred of Israel fuelled by lies and propaganda about deprivation in Gaza?
