The Spectacle Blog

On Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays played scoreless baseball until Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia stroked an opposite field single in the top of the 16th to give the Sox a 1-0 victory.

Yes, I stayed up to watch the whole thing and was too tired to write about it until today.

Over at National Review, Greg Pollowitz seems perplexed by the sight of Rays mascot Raymond donning pajamas. But when I saw that, I had a chuckle. I told my roomie Christopher that Raymond was taking a cue from Montreal Expos mascot Youppi.

On August 23, 1989, during a 22-inning affair between the Expos and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Youppi donned a sleeping cap and gown and laid his head on a pillow on top of the Dodgers dugout. This did not amuse the Dodgers and Youppi was promptly ejected from the game although he would be later allowed back provided he steer clear of the Dodger dugout. The Dodgers won the game 1-0 on a solo homerun by Rick Dempsey off his former Baltimore Orioles teammate Dennis Martinez.

I remember this game because I was supposed to attend it but a family affair kept me from doing so. To this day, I wish I had been there.

Well, the Expos may no longer be in Montreal but Youppi is still there doing his shtick with the Canadiens.

If Pedroia's single had happened in the bottom of the 16th inning would it have been described as a "walk off" single?

Who cares?
