Liberty vs. Security

Ben Franklin's famous quote that "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" seems straightforward. But it's not. In context, it means something totally different from what you think.

Well it is easy to see with TSA what happens when one sacrifices liberty for security.

Our Liberty would be simple to defend by trading our enemies' lives for it.

I did NOT support increasing security in the US and harassing innocent Americans after 9/11. I supported mass destruction of Islamic cities with the promise of more if the attacks did not cease. Wars are not won by defensive measures. Concerns for the lives of enemy civilians has brought us nothing but trouble and pain.

A much better approach would be this: "where they make a desert, they call it peace." Let us not be constrained for concern for those who celebrate the killing of our countrymen by fire and heights. They claim to love death. Well, everyone should be free to pursue their bliss, and I say we should help them pursue theirs. Screw Nation Building.

A distinction without any essential difference.
