The Spectacle Blog

I think Bob Tyrell sums up the whole News of the World phone hacking scandal in Britain and the reaction to it in left-wing quarters in the United States quite nicely:

Whatever was done in breach of the law in London will of course be investigated and prosecuted there. But there is no evidence that anything was done here. Those who call for an investigation of News Corp. here are on the wrong side of the freedom issue. What is the New York Times doing day after day filling its front pages with infantile hysteria? This is the same newspaper that published secret American intelligence documents hacked by the suppliers of Wikileaks on its front pages. Presumably innocent people were victims of terrorists because of it, possibly American soldiers. What hypocrisy by the Times to put a hacking story on its front page day after day and to complain about the Murdoch press's hacking story.

With the Obama presidency teetering, the Left needs something on which to latch. So now that there's been wrongdoing done by a Murdoch run newspaper, the Left smells blood in the water and now wants the Fox News Channel to be investigated. The Left is hunting Fox News. As much as the Left loathes the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Dick Cheney, they probably despise Fox News even more.

While I was in Maine last weekend, we were joined by my roommate's cousin who served for a time as a liaison to President Obama in the Pine Tree State. Politics were largely left off the table for most of the weekend. However, on Saturday morning, he did make a crack about not relying on Fox News as a reliable source of information. I asked him what programming on Fox he found objectionable. He couldn't name any and then added, "Well you can't rely on CNN or MSNBC as sources either." I didn't press the matter further. I had made my point. He didn't watch Fox News and thus did not have an informed opinion on the subject.

It's amazing to me how Obama's people hate Fox News. Remember when David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel said that Fox News wasn't a legitimate news organization? It was amongst the daftest things the Obama Administration (admittedly amongst many, many daft things) has done. When you consider how well Obama came off in his September 2008 interview with Bill O'Reilly, the dynamic duo should have thrown Fox News flowers, not flames. When the Obama Administration takes on Fox News in this manner they are cutting their noses to spite their faces.

At the end of the day, while the allegations against Murdoch in Britain are quite serious one cannot assume without evidence Fox News has been involved in similar misdeeds simply because Murdoch owns it too.

It's common knowledge that historical dictators capturing countries/territories etc initially commandeered the newpspers/media within same as a means of brainwashing/propagandizing the general public thereafter. China's, Russia's, Cuba's etc media/newspapers are all controlled their respective governments, and their populations' so-called news is actually/simply their governments' talking points. Similarily, our MSM has been taken over for centuries by these liberal Democrats intent upon getting their messages out to us vernable public-citizens. It's only due to the alternative news sources such as Fox that we are able to obtain the truth, and therefore to not be controlled by the government!!!!!!!!!

Grzmlyk| 7.14.11 @ 2:56PM

Yes, Bill O'Reilly's breath still smells like Obama's ass, even though he seems to scold us less frequently about how Obama's really a brilliant, wonderful, well-intentioned prodigy who wants the best for our country.

But if you are on the right - or even perceived to be on the right - you have no rights. I find it ironic that leftists believe the first amendment only applies to them - even as they declare the entire Constitution unConstitutional.

That's how it works in this country thanks to our thoroughly debauched culture. Sarah Palin's private life can be dragged through the mud while Obama's remains sanctified and off-limits; Michele Bachmann can be excoriated as an idiot while Obama's numerous gaffes meet with media silence, and of course George Bush is Original Conservative Sin itself, along with his handmaiden Dick Cheney, while nothing but crooks, thugs and pathological liars populate the entire Obama administration.

I'm sure the left is still assembling its case to take Bush and Cheney to the World Court; no doubt they'll make an exception to their principled stand against capital punisment in this instance.

If you're a black panther thug intimidating voters outside a polling place, well, that's patriotism; if you're on the right and lodge the mildest complaint about the shameless arrogance of our leftist leaders, you can expect the IRS to come knocking on your door - or worse.

Here's the left's idea of justice for News Corp: Execute Murdoch today and we'll start the trial tomorrow - hell, just litigate the thing in the NY Times!

In a world where Scooter Libby can be imprisoned for something Richard Armitage said - that wasn't a crime to begin with - only a fool would expect any kind of justice from the left toward the right.

No, the left is all about the replacing justice with vengeance - a particularly ugly form of vengeance that serves only to solidify the tyranical power of leftists.

And if you commit the thought crime of not being a fellow-traveler, down with the "social justice" of liberalism (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), you are gonna come up against a whole different brand of justice.

The left's thrall of "social justice" has about as much to do with "justice" as Ted Bundy had to do with feminism.

Well said and true! Once again, I'll proclaim that the left are.....DOMESTIC TERRORISTS!!!!!

Paul McGrath| 7.14.11 @ 11:02PM

You have given something else to cut and paste, Mr. Grzmlyk. When I use it, I will be sure to attribute it to you.

This is all just noise in the wind. With the budget fight going on, weak job numbers that are even getting worse, and a President willing to drag the Country down the tubes, going after Fox News ranks so low on the list as not to matter much. Somehow I think Fox News is big enough, and strong enough to withstand any assults by the left. Not so much the left. I think the power of liberal thought is slowly slipping away. Attack Fox News frontally and the left may in up stomped to the ground.

martin j smith| 7.14.11 @ 4:40PM

here is how the "deal " works: Obama and his cronies will castigate a big business--say FOX NEWS. FOX NEWS shills for Obama's side as in the Debt Ceiling issue-- so under the table FOX knows or is told nothing will really come of it--but the rhetoric continues. Of course FOX is being black mailed continuously. That is the problem.

When O'Reilly developed his ManCrush on Obama I realized that he was an idiot. He recived his graduate training at...wait for it...Harvard! 'Nuff Said.

Nite| 7.14.11 @ 10:56PM

Obama is in deep trouble in this coming election. The liberals and their media shills are starting now to try and shut up media outlets who tell the truth about Obama. It is going to get ugly. O'Reilly has slipped a cog when he talks about Obama.

Paul McGrath| 7.14.11 @ 11:01PM

O'Reilly's instincts are generally okay, but the problem with him is that he is not very bright and he has never truly bothered to think things out.

Thus, he thinks that oil prices are high because of "speculators"--God, he wouldn't let go of that one--and he continues to think that Obama is a reasonable and intelligent man.

Aaron, you have become the "go to" guy on this blog: thoughtful, compelling, informative and controversial. But if you ever use the phrase, "at the end of the day," again, I am going to throw a brick through my computer. I don't want to do that, and you don't want me to do that. But I will. So be careful. Thanks.

not fox news, but news corp. which has its headquarters in the u.s. and owns other properties. fox news is not news corp. but is just a subsidiary.

As I said Fox ( whatever company ) is being black mailed. I hope some day someone squeals on Obama.

The probe of allegations News Corp. media hacked the phones of 9/11 victims is being led by Republican firebrand Rep. Peter King of New York.

Tenn Slim| 7.15.11 @ 8:17AM

FOX news, Glenn B, O'Riely are anathema to the LEFT simply because they do not kowtow to the agenda line.
ANY source that questions, asks outright (to Them) questions that would peel thier onion are anathema and to be despised.
end

Tenn Slim| 7.15.11 @ 8:20AM

Watching O Riely (sic) daily has convinced me he is trying desparately to not offend nor question the Obama admin. His obvious "I dont understand " gimmicks fall on deaf ears. HE GETS IT, but is desparately trying to avoid future Obama led pitfalls.

Faux News gets no sympathy from me. Yeah, they're being slimed, but they do it to cons and tea partiers all the time.

Enjoy, Faux News

tonypal| 7.15.11 @ 10:07AM

Faux News, how clever and original. Since you seem to think Fox News is a bogus outfit, perhaps you can provide some evidence to support your belief.

Let me re-emphasize my earliar brief point. This assault upn Fox [or TAS, Limbaugh, Bortz etc] is historically typical of these radicals aka liberals; and same tactics extend back to my long-ago early adulthood. In my college days, these idiots were attacking police and the military with cries of PIG, RACIST PIG, FASIST PIG, etc, were paint bombing Hubber/SUV car lots in the eco-terrorism; were blowing up buildings in protest over the Viet Nam War etc; were rioting in the streets of Chicago during the DNC convention being held there; were attempting to drive ROTC established units off of college campuses; were holding rock-and-roll love fests proclaiming free love, free sex, hail to the Black Panthers, etc. Today the parents, friends, relatives, etc of these former continueally protesting liberals are now within the halls of congress and party affiliation is Democrat, and they have succeeded in exploding the governmental bedget defecits into bankruptcy land [which working taxpayers are forced to pay for] of governmental provided welfare. These protests [both private and government sponsored] over Fox etc is not casual, is not a concern for the privacy of citizens as they propagandizingly state as their reasons for same. It's all a coordinated, conspiratorial system of underground/disguised protests by these leftist goons to bring down conservative/normal society as we know it. its nothing new, as these monkeys have been at this for my entire lifetime. When these liberal idiots [ie PURPLE etc] blog within this conservative periodical, it is all intended and conspiratorially originated [possibly coming from the Justice Dept, as it has previously been reported that this administration has established blog-protesting squads within the government ranks to counter-argue conservative news sites in anti-war type fashion/tactics]. So if you're not as old as I am [hopefully], don't for one minute think that this is spontaneous liberal outrage, because it is not [but is instead purposely orchestrated and directed by the leftist organizers of same]. Also, conservative publications such as TAS etc need to fight this creeping [directed] underground assault upon the Fox's of the alternative media because their attempt is to destroy conservative news sites/organizations [and believe me, TAS etc will be next upon these liberals list for attack purposes, whenever they have a type opportunity such as this so-called hacking instance in England]!!!!!!!!!!!

NYT knows that the potential (and mathematical probablility) of an Obama administration major scandal is high, and may be hoping to discredit a major competitor from scooping the stories before they have no choice but to cover them. If Issa does his job, Fox News will be the least of the WH worries.
