Warren Buffett's idea for retiring the debt: 

I could end the deficit in 5 minutes. You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP all sitting members of congress are ineligible for reelection.

Problem is, they would just raise taxes. The last thing they would think of doing is cutting spending, especially by cutting entire programs that have outlived whatever usefulness they may once have had.
