The Spectacle Blog

For the past several days I have been in rural Maine without an internet connection. Thus I have not been on top of things in the way in which I am accustomed. Not that I'm complaining about spending a few days in a cottage looking out at the Atlantic. Still, I do like to know what is going on here and abroad.

I was, however, able to get Red Sox games on the radio. When I checked the score of Saturday's Red Sox-Orioles game, I learned that New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter attained his 3,000th hit by way of a homerun. He is only the second MLB player to hit a homerun for his 3,000th hit. The other was Jeter's ex-Yankee teammate Wade Boggs who did it in 1998 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Although Jeter has had a subpar season, he rose to the occasion and went 5 for 5 including a game winning hit against the Tampa Bay Rays. Add a hit he had today and he has 3,004 for his career. With all the great Yankees who have come before him, Jeter is the only one who reached 3,000 in pinstripes.

Here's something I wrote about Jeter after he passed Lou Gehrig as the Yankees all-time hit leader in September 2009.

Speaking as a once passionate (now tepid) Yankees fan... Derek Jeter is BOTH highly overrated AND highly underrated.

His many Gold Gloves prove he's overrated. He didn't deserve any of them, because he's NOT a great defensive shortstop and never has been.

On the other hand, he's deserved two MVP awards that he didn't get. That suggests he's UNDERappreciated.

From MST3K, The Movie:

"Look, Mike, you can see the Cubs losing from up here." (As a Jet Plane passes over Chicago in the Movie "This Island Earth.")

"Hi, Mike. I've prepared a complete Newsdigest for the Earth below for you to read over breakfast. The Cubs lost again."

Congratulations and Thank Heaven!

Now we can get back to Baseball. Which is also played in other places than New York City!

Well congratulations to him. I remember watching Stan Musial getting his 3000th hit. However I find it interesting that while Jeter gets all this hype on the run-up to 3000, we never here a word about Jim Thome. Thome is only 5 homers from 600, and is one of the few guys never accused of steroids. I think 600 homers is far more rare than 3000 hits.

All three, Musial, Jeter & Thome are & were player respected ballplyers & the game's gentlemen.
