Troy Senik reports some details of the California state controller's release of state payroll information:

more than 1,400 state employees took home over $200,000 apiece last year. Some of the more outrageous examples: a surgeon in the state's beleaguered prison system collected over $775,000 on the year; the chief investment offer at CalPERS (the public pension fund which has nearly $240 billion in unfunded liabilities according to a 2010 Stanford study) pocketed a cool $548,142; and the president of the state's publicly-funded stem cell research institute pulled down nearly half a million dollars.

Furthermore, according to the Los Angeles Times, one state prison psychiatrist "received $594,976 for more than 2 1/2 years worth of unused sick time," and a prison dentist similarly got a "$553,253 payout."

Something to think about when listening to liberal complaints about the number of state and local jobs lost in the recession. How many teachers could California have kept on if the state was rational in how it paid employees?

And those liberal California morons still have a fiscal defecit and are asking us taxpayers to pay for same with a federal governmental bailout?????????????????????

Richard Baker| 7.8.11 @ 5:11PM

Public service employees. Is this the latest oxymoron? Since bulls service cows in breeding, is this what these overpaid "public service" types mean by service?

That's only true if CA pays the guy in more than IOUs.

By the way, speaking of voting for moronic governmental outlays, RON PAUL JUST VOTED to continue foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority regardless of whether it engages in dialogue with Israel. Cutting foreign aid indeed. Kucinich voted with him.

Roll call---524 Date: 7-Jul H RES 268. Quote whatever you want, Clint, but look it up in THOMAS, folks, under the July 7, 2011 roll call 524. That's how the lying murder supporting weasel voted---for FOREIGN AID TO HAMAS from beleaguered American taxpayers.

CalMark| 7.8.11 @ 5:45PM

Good ol' Ron Paul.

Just don't expect this revelation of fact to influence Ron Paulistas. In their own way, they're just as bad as Obama supporters.

Occam's Tool| 7.8.11 @ 9:45PM

Dear Cal:: you are, as usual, correct sir.

Clint| 7.9.11 @ 10:31AM

Dr. Ron Paul,
“Our military’s purpose is to defend our country, not to police the
Middle East.

I am not the only one who can see the absurdities of our foreign
policy. We give $3 billion to Israel and $12 billion to her enemies.
Most Americans know that makes no sense.

“We need to come to our senses, trade with our friends in the Middle
East (both Arab and Israeli), clean up our own economic mess so we set a
good example, and allow them to work out their own conflicts."

Dr.Ron Paul.
"Mr. Speaker I rise in opposition to this resolution. While I certainly share the hope for peace in the Middle East and a solution to the ongoing conflict, I do not believe that peace will result if we continue to do the same things while hoping for different results. The US has been involved in this process for decades, spending billions of dollars we do not have, yet we never seem to get much closer to a solution. I believe the best solution is to embrace non-interventionism, which allows those most directly involved to solve their own problems.

This resolution not only further entangles the US in the Israeli/Palestinian dispute, but it sets out the kind of outcome the United States would accept in advance. While I prefer our disengagement from that conflict, I must wonder how the US expects to be seen as an “honest broker” when it dictates the terms of a solution in such a transparently one-sided manner?

In the resolution before us, all demands are made of only one side in the conflict. Do supporters of this resolution really believe the actors in the Middle East and the rest of the world do not notice? We do no favors to the Israelis or to the Palestinians when we involve ourselves in such a manner and block any negotiations that may take place without US participation. They have the incentives to find a way to live in peace and we must allow them to find that solution on their own. As always, congressional attitudes toward the peace process in the Middle East reveal hubris and self-importance. Only those who must live together in the Middle East can craft a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine."

Occam's Tool| 7.10.11 @ 3:05PM

That's what he said. He voted to continue aid to hamas, against 357 of his fellows, in conjunction with Kucinich.

I don't give a damn what he says, C(lint) Elegans. I give a damn what he DOES. Now, go live up to your namesake's sexual proclivities.

Incidentally, no one has ever tried to put pressure on the Palestinians to end this conflict. Never, ever.

Now, what I didn't find out was whether the psychiatrist involved got half a million in pay for 2 and 1/2 years worth of total work time in sick pay upon retirement. If you work for 30 years at 4 weeks/yr sick pay, that will be about 2 years worth of pay, and, at the latest pay for CA prison psychiatrists (physically dangerous, physically and mentally very uncomfortable, the positions go for about 350 K year, which is a little over $150/hr for a psychiatrist, plus a bit for call.), that would be about right. For example, in a little ofver 3 years of working for a State, I have accumulated well over 150 hours of sick time. (I get 13 days/yr.)

Occam's Tool| 7.8.11 @ 5:32PM

Again, you do surgery for prisoners, who like to sue like Rabid maniacs, and have chronic medical conditions from years of drug abuse. Do it on prisoners who are 80% likely to have Hep C. I don't mind the MDs making money in prisons---it is NASTY, highly litigated work.

Administrators are another story. But most public university administrators make in the half-million a year range or more.

Nick| 7.9.11 @ 12:56AM

Occam's Tool,

I disagree.

Convicts deserve the worst medical care. They deserve the guys who flunked out of med schools from around the globe, only to finally graduate from Mogedishu U. Guys like that shouldn't cost more than $50k a year.

Occam's Tool| 7.10.11 @ 3:02PM

Except the lawyers from the ACLU will then sue you for more than that's worth.

Nick| 7.10.11 @ 3:45PM

Occam's Tool,

This why we need a bloodless version of Dick the Butcher's plan for lawyers, from Henry VI, for the ACLU!

CalMark| 7.8.11 @ 5:34PM

CALTRANS has rooms and rooms full of engineers (a significant proportion of them foreign nationals) making around $100K per year to...well...um...you know...to do...er...I guess...important engineering stuff. Whatever it is apparently doesn't require mastery of the English language, either.

Occam's Tool| 7.8.11 @ 9:52PM

Right. Indeed.

But as a prison doc in two different states, I can tell you that it is extremely unpleasant work.

Essentially, I viewed my job as keeping the animals calm so they would not shank their fellow prisoners. Any damage to prisoners was leapt upon by the VERMIN AT THE ACLU. I was usually paid around $100-$110'hr for the job. But the cost of housing and taxes and plain living is so high in CA that they pay those guys closer to $200.00/hr for psych work. But it apparently is mega-un fun. Just look up the job offers for psychiatrists in CA prisons. Chief psychiatrist: Currently, as of December 2, 2010:
Salary for Adult Institutions (except the Third Day Visiting Program), Division of Adult Parole Operation, Division of Juvenile Justice and Division of Correctional Health Care Services Only:
$21,375 - $25,720 per month. $312,000 as a base salary/yr, folks. If the state don't go bankrupt. In case you are wondering, that is around $150/hr, which is not unusual for a private practice psychiatrist. They dod pay malpractice and health care.

But you have to work with scum.

Occam's Tool| 7.10.11 @ 3:05PM

Sorry, "don't."

Occam's Tool| 7.8.11 @ 5:34PM

You see, folks, prisoners ARE entitled to medical care, and you have to pay docs a bonus to see them. No medical care, and you will lose in lawsuits more than you pay the docs. Blame the ACLU, not the docs. I wouldn't do prison work again for less than $150-$200/hr, and I'd get it, too.

CalMark| 7.8.11 @ 5:42PM

If we had judges with brains, they'd dismiss these cases.

Funny, how many cases ordinary Americans and conservative organizations never have any "standing" to file a lawsuit about things that concern them directly. But prisoners (or the ACLU or whomever on their behalf) can sue anyone they like for any reason.

What a messed-up country this is.

W| 7.8.11 @ 9:23PM

Why does the state agree to unused sick time. If you are sick, then take time off and get paid. If you did not take time off then you were not sick enough. Sick pay should be for missing work. The unused sick pay is just another form of deferred salary. Just call it that, and be honest

Occam's Tool| 7.8.11 @ 9:44PM

The sick time is deferred pay. Hey, I dunno...

W| 7.8.11 @ 10:24PM

Most private employer union agreements do not ahve accumulated sick pay. they have sick pay if you are sick. The only union contracts where I have seen the carryover unused sick days is public employers.

Thomas| 7.10.11 @ 9:33AM

Are some public sector employees grossly overpaid? Yes. But, who overpaid them? Your elected officials. They are the ones who agree to both excessive salaries and very liberal retirement buy backs. Why? No one kidnapped their children and forced them to sign these contracts. So why do they agree to these things? For their own benefit, not yours. Some of these jobs are political perks for friends, family and political supporters. Many of the retirement buy backs apply to elected officials as well as the common worker.

So remember that when you go to the polls. Know for whom you are voting. Or you can sit at home and complain about the excessive salaries and benefits that your elected officials give away.

martin j smith| 7.10.11 @ 11:47AM

If the Socialists want to talk class warfare it ought to be thrown right back at them. The pay of SOME government employees is over the top--but lets also look at the wealth of such notables as Harry Reid,Nancy Pelosi--lets see how much they have in the till. I think one of the myths that needs to be busted is that Rpublicans are only for the rich--the truth is Socvialists want to be rich and as long as you give them a lot of money your wealth is yours until they decide otherwise.
