It looks like the GOP leadership is going to do right on the stupid light bulb ban, enacted back during the Bush administration.  On January 1 100 watt incandescent bulbs will become illegal, with lower wattages to follow.  It's an inane infringement of consumer choice.

Reports Politico:

House Republicans are finally ready to make good on their promise to stay the execution of incandescent light bulbs.

After months of fiery rhetoric from the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, GOP sponsors of the legislation confirmed they're on track for a floor vote Monday on a bill that stops the federally mandated transition to more eco-friendly home lighting.

The issue might seem small to denizens of Washington, but real people care.  Observed Quin Hillyer:

People are watching. People are PASSIONATE about this issue. There are people who will literally stay home from elections, rather than voting for Republicans, if Congress is too feckless to act on it.  What people in the Beltway STILL don't understand is that what drives so much of the anger in the hinterlands isn't the huge things Washington does wrong, but the endless accumulation of "little things" that mess with our lives and annoy the living $&^%#&*^$*^#$* out of us.

The real test will be how many Democrats vote for repeal.  How many of them are willing to break with the party's enthusiasm for inserting government into even the dark recesses of our homes?

When one considers how many dim bulbs voted for the dim bulb measure to begin with, I say chances of a repeal are, well, dim.

If they can't manage this then they aren't worth our time.

How many Lib Dems does it take to change a light bulb? We’ll never know because they don’t do it themselves. They get a community organizer to form a lobby to get the government to do it for them.

Hillier is correct. It's the thousand and one itty bitty things that drive us nuts. It's also the thousand and one itty bitty freedoms taken away one at a time in the name of security, health care or whatever the cause de jure is that, ultimately dooms a free society.

I would love to have a reporter ask former President Bush whether he still favors the ban.

What is eco-friendly about light bulbs filled with mercury???!!! A science student at a local high school recently broke a mercury thermometer in class. They evacuated the entire school until the County health department could arrive and advise them how to clean it up. What have we become?

I have never heard a liberal even try to answer your question. They just go "Hmmmph" which translates, that's you'r damn problem and you don't matter.
Those bulbs also give me migraines. I hate them.

John Harrison| 7.8.11 @ 6:29PM

A standard 100 W bulb causes more mercury emissions than a broken CFL due to the fact that we're using coal powered plants to light our bulbs, and those plants have mercury emissions. So if you're concerned about mercury you have nowhere to turn but LEDs.

Also, you can still buy incandescent bulbs, they just have to be more efficient. Luckily more efficient 100 W equivalents are already on the market. So there is no ban on incandescents, just efficiency standards that have already been met.

This is yet another reason for conservatives to despise the spineless, go-along-to-get-along George W. Bush.

My 3 year old grandson and I just knocked over a lamp and broke one of those dangerous light bulbs. I just wasn't thinking about going to the computer to look up what to do so I just put every broken piece into a plastic bag - used a mini broom to sweep the rest into a dustpan and into the trash they went. Later when my son returned home he looked up what to do in case they break (which they will do with an active family). This is ridiculus to have a hazard like that in a family home. Dangerous!!! Leave it to our government to come up with a stupid idea like that.

GW gave us the TSA what a big time RINO just like his dad!

PattyMor| 7.8.11 @ 3:05PM

No, GWB was a bigger RINO than his dad. GWB gave us No Child Left Behind (or throw more money at inept schools systems so they can cheat on test scores so they can get more money). GWB gave us the Grab and Grope Agency, also known as the TSA. GWB took away our incandescent light bulbs and mandated using more ethanol. And, GWB (aka "the oilman") did not get signifcant oil drilling accomplished. He got us involved in two wars that are draining us financially. And the master's degreed President could not balance a budget and did not close the border with Mexico even after 9/11.

mzk| 7.13.11 @ 7:25AM

While I am completely for incadescent bulbs - the other type don't even seem to last longer, in my experience here is Israel (both types available), I am a little doubtful about this business about mercury being so horrible.

I grew up with mercury thermometers, and broke a few. It's not the worst thing it the world to clean up, and I am annoyed that I can no longer get one. THAT infringes on my freedom.
