The Spectacle Blog

Jose Antonio Vargas, the journalist who “came out” as “undocumented” in a recent issue of the New York Times Magazine, made an appearance at the Campus Progress national conference on Wednesday. He made headlines with his piece “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant”, in which he related his struggles with separation and exclusion due to his citizenship status and his sexuality. (Vargas is also gay.)

And this week, Campus Progress (an arm of the George-Soros-funded Center for American Progress) welcomed Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winner who writes for The Washington Post, to speak about his experience as what some of us would call an illegal alien.

Not Vargas, though. At the conference, he proclaimed, “I am not illegal. I am a human being. I am not an alien, from Mars.”

Vargas told the story of how he discovered his citizenship status when he was 16: He went to the DMV to apply for a driver’s license, and was told then that his Green Card was fake. He proceeded to denounce those who use the terms “illegal immigrant” and “illegal alien”, saying that “illegal” should never be used to describe a person-apparently, even if he has broken the law.

He also drew a parallel between today’s illegal immigrants and oppressed groups of the past when he told the college-student-packed auditorium that immigration is “the other civil rights issue of your generation” (the first being same-sex marriage).

Vargas’s rhetoric fit right in with the rest of the conference’s speakers, including President Bill Clinton, who touted diversity as “America’s greatest asset,” saying, “That’s why I passionately believe in the DREAM Act.”

Clinton continued, “I think we’re better off with more immigrants, not fewer,” making no distinction between legal and illegal immigration.

Gaby Pacheco, project coordinator for Education Not Deportation and National Coordinator of United We DREAM, agreed with Vargas that the word “illegal” has been misused by anti-(illegal)-immigration activists. According to Pacheco, equating “illegal” with “criminal” was simply a tactic employed by “the opposition” as part of a smear campaign to make immigrants look bad. It had nothing to do with the words actually meaning the same thing.

Pacheco also argued that she (herself “undocumented”) in fact contributes her fair share to American society because she doesn’t demand to have the sales tax removed from the price of everything she buys.

Overall, the tone of the conference-not surprisingly-was overwhelmingly pro-DREAM and pro-political correctness when it came to discussing immigration. The phrases “comprehensive immigration reform”, “undocumented”, and “coming out”-in the immigration debate, common euphemisms for “amnesty”, “illegal”, and “confessing”-got plenty of use from speakers and conference-goers alike.

Libs & neocons are united in their love and worship of the "immigrant". This is because of a fundamental misreading of US history.

The USA was NOT founded by immigrants, nor has immigration been particulary high throughout US history. It has generally flowed between high and low or no immigration until Teddy "the swimmer" Kennedy's 1965 immigration act, which threw the doors wide open, especially to the 3rd world, who before that, were limited in their opportunity to come to the United States. This is mainly because the Americans of the 1950s, 60s, were happy with their nation and themselves and didn't fall prey to "diversity is our strength" propaganda being shoved down their throats every hour on the hour.

Up until about the late 1960s, the USA was almost 90% caucasian and I would argue, better off than today. We had more unity, we shared a common culture, language, customs, traditions, recreation, sports, etc.

What hath "diversity" brought? Sharia Law, beheadings, burkas, illegal amigos commiting identity theft, social security fraud, income tax evasion ....... and Spanish language everywhere.

No thanks. This isn't my country anymore and I don't particularly care about it anymore. It's gone beyond a joke.

Next time, find someone to really press one of its supporters about the fact that the DA would let the illegal aliens covered by it deprive some citizens of college. See this for more:

http://24ahead.com/s/dream-act

Video of someone really being pressed on that would be very effective at not just blocking the bill but also at reducing illegal immig. overall. It might even get a Drudge link.

And, to avoid this backfiring, it's very important to use the correct terms and phrasing, such as I used above (one could even say "then-former illegal aliens" to be completely chronologically precise).

Why no posts regarding operation "Gunwalker"?

Holder and crew are scurrying likes rats on a sinking ship and with each new revelation, impeachment comes closer to reality.

The scandals got everything you could want; corruption and incompetence at the highest levels, American government sponsored murder of American Law Enforcement agents, cover up and, according to the latest pajamasmedia post, congressional funding of "Gunwalker" that sanctioned illicit and illegal gun smuggling. And the subsequent murders. http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler.....-into-law/

You wanna win the next election for your republican do nothings, right?

Hold the current administration accountable for its crimes and misdemeanors. It's all there.

Do something.

The comment wasn't directed at me, but the reason I haven't covered it that much isn't because it's not an important story. It's because it's a developing story that has twist after twist, a series of players, and things that only those in Congress know. Others have much more resources to follow the twists and turns.

Meanwhile, for the past 2+ years, the TP "patriots" have largely ignored the wider immig. issue. Their interest is piqued only by issues that are tangential to that wider issue, such as AZ or F and F. The TPers have been completely about the latest amnesty bill and were almost completely silent about the one before that. And, they have neither the ability nor the will to use the wider issue against their supposed opponents. They don't have the will to help those like me who have both the ability and the will but lack helpers.

tatosian| 7.8.11 @ 5:18AM

True, we can assume tea party support in states or localities where specific anti illegal alien legislation has been passed. It's also true that beyond that, the destruction caused by illegal immigration doesn't seem to be a great concern for the tea party.

Sure you can go to any tp website and there'll be a statement demanding stricter border control, but that's little more than a buzz word now. Hell, Bush, McCain, Napalitano and Obama are all committed to a secure border. The phrase has no meaning in the real world.

You've been at this a long time and you have my respect and gratitude for what you've done. But you mention a lack of will on the part of the tea party ( I would add republicans and conservatives) to stopping illegal immigration and I believe you're exactly right. In fact it is the will of those you mentioned (and I believe those I mentioned) to normalize and set all those millions of hostiles on a path to citizenship. I further believe they will have their way.

Why? Well, you can't invite millions of, say, hostile Mexican illegals into your country, give them jobs, free ER services, free education and citizenship for their offspring, food stamps welfare, chain migration and then just decide to deprive them of their unearned, stolen privileges. What do you suppose would happen if you did that?

No disrespect, but that being the case, you're of no use to them sir. Quite the contrary.

Stay strong.

People who brag about breaking the law are exactly the kind of people who get Pulitzers and Nobel Peace Prizes these days. Further, their definition of what legal and illegal and alien and much else is , is accepted by the "Yup! Yup! Yup!" lap dogs of the media (oops. IMMIGRANTS AND TAXES:
Q: “Is it true that illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes and drain our economy?”
A: As Ben Franklin said, “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” Like the rest of us, unauthorized immigrants pay taxes on their property and anything

they buy. More than half of them have taxes taken out of their paychecks, but because our immigration system is dysfunctional, these taxes are paid under

false Social Security numbers. We need a new regimen in which we know who is paying taxes and can ensure that no one is getting a free ride. The only

way to do that is to pull unauthorized immigrants out of the shadows and get them on the right side of the law.
Three state-level studies have found that unauthorized immigrants pay more in taxes than they use in benefits. In Iowa, unauthorized immigrants pay an

estimated $40 to $62 million in state taxes, while they and their employers contribute an additional $50 million to $77.8 million in federal, Social Security,

and Medicare taxes from which they will never benefit. In Oregon, unauthorized immigrants—who are not eligible for any state benefits—pay between $134

million and $187 million in taxes each year. Finally, in Texas, the State Comptroller found that, without unauthorized residents, the gross state product in

2005 would have been $17.7 billion less.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Undocumented immigrants are an important component of the U.S. economy. They meet the labor demand in sectors in which they do

not directly compete with U.S.-born workers. The great majority of migrant workers are taxpaying, hardworking, and law-abiding people who are integrating

into U.S. society.

The economics of immigration, Stephen C. Goss, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration and someone who enjoys bipartisan support for his

straightforwardness, said that by 2007, the Social Security trust fund had received a net benefit of somewhere between $120 billion and $240 billion from

unauthorized immigrants.
That represented an astounding 5.4 percent to 10.7 percent of the trust fund's total assets of $2.24 trillion that year. The cumulative contribution is surely

higher now. Unauthorized immigrants paid a net contribution of $12 billion in 2007 alone, Goss said.

Previous estimates circulating publicly and in Congress had placed the annual contributions at roughly half of Goss's 2007 figure and listed the cumulative

benefit on the order of $50 billion.

The Social Security trust fund faces a solvency crisis that would be even more pressing were it not for these payments.
Adding to the Social Security irony is that the restrictionists are mostly OLDER AND RETIRED WHITES from longtime American families. The very people,

in other words, who benefit most from the Social Security payments by unauthorized immigrants.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform Would Boost the Economy & Help ALL American Workers: As opposed to the mass deportation, enforcement-only

approach, addressing and fixing the immigration system in a wholesale manner will be a boon to the U.S. economy and all U.S. workers. That is why both

the AFL-CIO and Change to Win created The Labor Movement’s Joint Framework for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Dr. Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda

conducted a 2010 report for the Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center that found that “Unlike the current enforcement-only

strategy, comprehensive reform would raise the ‘wage floor’ for the entire U.S. economy—to the benefit of both immigrant and native-born workers.”

According to the study, granting legal status to undocumented immigrants and creating flexible legal limits on future immigration flows would generate

enough consumer-spending to support 750,000-900,000 jobs. The report also found that the mass deportation approach would reduce GDP by 1.46 percent

annually, amounting to a loss of $2.6 trillion over 10 years.

MYTH: Immigrants take jobs from Americans.
FACT: Immigrants create new jobs, and complement the skills of theU.S. native workforce.

MYTH: Immigrants drive down the wages of American workers.
FACT: Immigrants increase overall economic productivity and have no significant effect on overall wages for American workers.

MYTH: Immigrants will cause massive, unnecessary population growth
in the United States.
FACT: As the baby boomer generation begins to retire and the U.S.fertility rate declines, it will be necessary to replace our aging workforce with immigrants

to maintain economic growth.

MYTH: Undocumented immigrants do not pay taxes.
FACT: Undocumented immigrants pay billions of dollars in taxes each year, often for services they will never receive.

MYTH: Immigrants come to the United States for welfare benefits.
FACT: The law forbids immigrants from using welfare services.

MYTH: The Government should just enforce the law to solve our
immigration problems.
FACT: Enforcement alone will not solve our immigration problems. The cost would be prohibitive, it would have a detrimental effect on
the U.S. economy, and it would simply push certain immigrantsfurther into the underground economy.

MYTH: Immigrants are not assimilating.
FACT: Immigrants are assimilating at much the same rate as pastwaves of immigrants.

MYTH: Immigrants are more likely to commit crimes than
U.S. natives.
FACT: Immigrants have a much lower incarceration rate than U.S. natives.

MYTH: Workers that come to the United States as temporary workers
will stay in the country once their visas expire.
FACT: Historically, migrants from Mexico worked in the United States for a few months or years, but then returned home. Border enforcement has made

that pattern much more difficult.

Archie| 7.9.11 @ 10:05AM

Immigration reform would generate $4.5 to $5.4 billion in additional net tax revenue over three years,” the letter says. “The nonpartisan Congressional Budget

Office scored the bi-partisan 2007 comprehensive immigration reform bill that was proposed in the Senate as increasing federal revenues by $15 billion over

the 2008-2012 period and by $48 billion over the 2008-2017 period.”

Studies from groups across the political spectrum have proven the economic and fiscal benefits of comprehensive immigration reform. By requiring illegal

immigrants to register with the government, pay fees and back taxes, and correct their status, we can drastically expand our tax base. A report by the

Center for American Progress found that passing comprehensive immigration reform would generate $4.5 to $5.4 billion in additional net tax revenue over

three years. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office scored the bi-partisan 2007 comprehensive immigration reform bill that was proposed in the

Senate as increasing federal revenues by $15 billion over the 2008-2012 period and by $48 billion over the 2008-2017 period.

In addition to expanding our tax base, economists have proven that comprehensive immigration reform would also increase wages for native workers,

thereby boosting tax revenues generated by all workers. The CATO Institute found that forcing undocumented immigrants to get right with the law by

registering with the government would boost the incomes of U.S. households by $180 billion in 2019, which would also lead to increased government

revenues, without increasing tax rates.

Just like our budget deficit, immigration reform is an issue that we cannot afford to ignore. Bipartisan proposals that are tough, fair, and practical have

garnered support from across the ideological spectrum in Congress, as well as from President Bush and the current administration. Comprehensive

immigration reform would clearly help us reduce our deficit and debt, and would do so without raising tax rates.

Before you Scream and show Ignorance and Hate at least read the Immigration Law regarding Undocumented Immigrants.

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS ARE NOT CRIMINALS. Its a Civil Matter.

The whole thing is perplexing to people who don't understand that being an illegal immigrant in and of itself is not a crime. The most pervasive comments

made in news stories about Secure Communities go a little like this: "Illegal immigrants are what they're called — they're considered criminals by mere

definition. Illegals who broke a bunch of laws to enter and live here should be subjected to immediate arrest and deportation — that's fair for everyone."

That's not accurate, but a lot of people have that same misunderstanding — even law enforcement professionals.

During a teleconference last month on the troubles that Secure Communities is bringing to local law enforcement agencies, a few sheriffs on the call

commiserated about their misunderstanding of immigration violations.

"I was always told it was a felony federal violation of law and was always under the impression that turning over any illegal immigrants (to ICE) was

mandated by federal law — and so did my employees," said Sheriff Ed Prieto of Yolo County, Calif. "But after we met with the Mexican consulate in

Sacramento we learned it's not. Then I started looking into how many of our people are being deported before trial and I became very uncomfortable

contacting ICE for nonviolent offenders."

Kane County, Ill., Sheriff Patrick Perez said that "90 percent of law enforcement officers believe (just being an illegal immigrant) is a crime, but I learned

after talking to an immigration judge that it is just a civil offense."

Sara Dill, a member of the American Bar Association's Commission on Immigration and a member of the ABA's Criminal Justice Council, explained it to me

this way: "States are seeking to criminalize what is only a civil violation in federal law." Dill said that failing to get a permit for home construction is one

example of a civil, not criminal, violation. "Putting illegal immigrants in a criminal context confuses merely being present in the United States without

authorization with crimes such as falsely claiming citizenship or identity theft, which are crimes under federal law."

Everyone knows that of the universe of illegal immigrants, some have committed nonviolent and violent crimes — and everyone believes these should be

prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

But believers of following "the letter of the law" cannot continue equating all illegal immigrants living in this country with criminals, who have plenty of civil

rights of their own. That's not the American way.

If you don’t know what you want, don’t say you never had a chance.

The people who complain the loudest about never having an opportunity in life are usually the ones who always have a ready excuse for their failures.

Nothing is ever their fault; they are victims of their heritage, their environment, insufficient education, or any number of other factors that they perceive as

placing them at a disadvantage. If you look hard enough, you can always find reasons for not attempting something or not sticking with the job to the end.

Successful people, though, are not excuse-makers. They take responsibility for their actions, they set goals, and they assume responsibility for their

achievement. Where others see despair, they see hope. They approach every situation with enthusiasm, confident in the knowledge that nothing is

impossible for those who have a Positive Mental Attitude. Dr Napoleon Hill.

If you are an American citizen, don’t let anyone tell you that you are downtrodden.

We still live in the greatest country in the world. The United States is the great experiment in positive thinking; our entire system of government is based

upon faith in the inherent goodness of the individual. It was a revolutionary idea more than 200 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was first

signed. Borrowing from the greatest thinkers in history, our founding fathers established a form of government of the people that is today the model most

imitated around the world. Economic and political conditions ebb and flow, but as long as we have a democratic society that celebrates the individual, we

can achieve anything in life we desire. All you require to be successful in the United States is the desire to achieve success and the determination to stick

with it until you reach your goals. Dr Napoleon Hill.

Can anybody clarify to me, why American taxpayers are forced by law to support people who illegally entered America from foreign countries? It is disturbing this is not charitable giving, but that this money is extorted from our taxes. This is just incurable and has a similar ring to the Obamacare care, which without consent of the majority of the general public that has been also shoved down the throats of US taxpayers. I can truly understand that most Americans desire to aid citizens and legal residents a helping hand in periods of recession or even falling on hard times. But how can the US government make us pay for a foreigner’s education or health care? This is by far one of the most serious issues befallen America, because people who arrive here should not be encouraged to stay by the Democrats or Republicans, either with pandering to them while illegally squatting in America, crossing borders, overstaying visas or coming into the US by ship.

It just goes to show that we cannot trust the US administration or those we place in high authority, to run this country and then gives the American people the finger? I cannot even imagine this nation’s future, where foreign nations seem to have more rights, than birthright citizens? It's only come to light over the last years, that unknown to most Americans politicians they have used cagey practices to pass six small amnesties behind our back, bring in millions with special visas. The major amnesty was in 1986, its inception starting the chain migration from its original population spiraling to 6 million, at a final cost of 76 billion. However, that was 25 year ago and trying to estimate today’s costs, ranges from 2 trillion to 2.5 trillion dollars in legalizing at least 20 million people. ( Statistics of the Heritage foundation) Currently the New York Times and its ultra Liberal activists are trying to convince us all, that illegal immigration has slowed to a trickle? My observation of thousands of sovereignty groups see no credence this revelation, but if these reasoning was solid, what about the millions that have arrived here. It's completely inconceivable or rational to the prudent mind in any government bureaucracy authoring another amnesty of any kind, when this great country is 14 trillion dollars in debt, with Obama's boys trying to lift the debt ceiling even higher.

The Liberals that have infested the Democrats have ruined America with the Tax and spend policies. But this time they are not only confronted by the House Republicans, but the emergence of the All-American Tea Party. Not at the assistance of the Liberal press, that this is just a timid group of dysfunctional people, but a very enthusiastic membership of all party affiliates that is straining to release itself from the usual, elitist GOP establishment. Thousands of cells or branches are reaching out to every moderate thinking American, to escape the Liberal extreme propaganda and even lies. This is the real people's party, comprising of all races and religions and a rare representation of Blacks, Whites and Hispanics and other races. The general population who are joining the TEA PARTY means Liberal, Independents, Libertarians, Republicans and Democrats and other political associates, who realize finally how they have been deceived.

Leading the TEA PARTY front is Michele Bachmann (R-MN) chair of the Caucus and moderate Conservative by definition, who has taken the presidential race to the people. She makes no excuses for the financial mess the country is in, but is steadfast that unless the Liberal-Democrats start cutting the influence of giant government, we will arrive on August 2, without any guarantee of a compromise of passing the debt limit. Only majority leader Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada would look for answers, in raising taxes of any kind on taxpayers or industry. Unlike the wimps in the current Congress M. Bachmann speaks out about curtailing illegal immigration, constructing the real double fence, tracking visa over-stays and seeking out business owners who ignore the laws on the books. This lady has a strong resonating voice that draws attention to the principles of the TEA PARTY policies.

Bachmann is resolute in mandating E-Verify and Secure Communities, as these two tools alone could locate and apprehend illegal aliens in the workplace or by checking fingerprints, aides to inform ICE of violations. Through April 30, 2011, more than 77,000 illegal immigrants convicted of crimes, including more than 28,000 convicted of aggravated felony (level 1) offenses like murder, rape and the sexual abuse of children were removed from the United States after identification through Secure Communities,” ICE says on its Secure Communities website. A relative of mine who is a police officer informed me of a very new piece of technologically, that has been assigned to Los Angeles police station called "Blue Checks" He explains it in detail, that this new system allows officers to confront a suspect and request them to hold out their hand. The hand-held device digitally scans the digits of the suspect’s hands, and within minutes the official receives a full criminal background account on the person. Only those in the system have reason to fear if they are wanted for a crime of some classification.

This new piece of equipment is under bombardment by a whole group of left leaning activists, as seeing it as an evasion of a person’s privacy. The "Politically Correct" are already coming out of their grubby holes in the rotting woodwork, crying foul and hoping that the lawmakers rescind its use. The ACLU doesn’t like "Blue Checks “saying the device is an invasion of privacy. Imagine criminal aliens who have reentered the United States being apprehended immediately that may save thousands of American lives. Supporters say they'll be able to find out if someone has prior arrests, in seconds, instead of hours. I see it as a brilliant compact that all should be placed with law enforcement including ICE. This small unit should have access to national Security agencies, connecting to the Social Security Administration, US Citizenship and Immigration Services and of course ICE. Every patrolman should be issued with this module as it offers instant recognition and could catch, illegal aliens using fraudulent ID.

Immigration laws have been ignored for far too long, and the last I heard there were an estimated 8 million aliens in jobs that Americans should have been hired for? This is incomprehensible when 9.3 percent of own people remain out-of-work. This is plain stealing and employees should be held to the highest penalty allowed by law. WHY COMING TO A SOVEREIGN LAND ILLEGALLY IS NOT A FELONY, MAKES NO SENSE TO THE MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION. Michelle Bachmann said she will enforce the 1986 Immigration laws, with no exception and zero tolerance that breaks these laws. It is the same with Governors and mayors who abuse city and State laws, applying a blind eye to Sanctuary Cities and States. This illegal immigration battle has been brewing for thirty years or more, except the law abiding people have finally come out of their somnolence.

Everyday blogs, articles and commentaries are crammed full of the abusiveness of previous and current administrations, overlooking intentionally the people's needs and who have become supplicants to majority major organization, that place pack money in favorable politicians pockets. Bloggers and conservative entities describe the overcrowded schools full with the children of illegal parents; classrooms crammed to legal capacity. In the Southwest the phenomena of closing hospitals overrun with continuous streams of foreign nationals filling the waiting room seats, for every type of medical emergency and even minor colds and ear infections. The uninsured have silently entered this nation, with the purpose of applying for welfare with the backing of taxpayers’ money. These are mostly unfunded mandates forced on States, which have finally found a voice within the Canyon State of Arizona. Others have been quick to follow, including Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Maryland, Utah already enforcing selective laws, not restricted by federal court system. E-Verify are the best tool available to prevent jobs from going to illegal aliens, no matter what the other side of the aisle says? More than 260,000 businesses are already using E-Verify at nearly one million work sites, nationwide.

Remember foreign nationals have been voting in federal and State elections; authorities are should be obligated to ID everybody who registers.

This is about illegal immigration? An immigrant is not illegal and people need to be enlightened. Highly skilled Professional workers are always welcome, not indigent ECONOMIC illegal aliens who are driving this country, into a third world condition. We cannot accommodate any longer those who come here to steal welfare and public benefits from legitimate Americans. It is estimated that illegal aliens send home by wire transfer around $40 billion dollars annually, that should be going into state treasuries.

Don't hesitate to reach the Senate phone switchboard—202-224–3121 and House—202-225–3121, and inform them you will not be manipulated into another clandestine Amnesty, disguised as the DREAM ACT.
