With Fourth of July festivities to commence in less than 72 hours, my home and native land celebrates its 144th birthday. On July 1, 1867, the British Parliament passed the British North America Act (now known the Constitution Act) which gave birth to the country we know and love as Canada.

Although Canada did not come about by way of revolution, Canadians celebrate independence pretty much the same way Americans do - barbecues, beer and fireworks. The only difference is there's no playing of the "1812 Overture."

Given Canada's British origins, it is fitting that the Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton are in Ottawa to be part of this year's Canada Day celebrations. The festivities include a gathering on Parliament Hill this evening which should draw a crowd of at least 100,000 people. During my time in Ottawa, I sat on the grass on Parliament Hill on a number of occasions. So they should have a splendid time. Although I imagine they will have a much better view of the proceedings and will not have to worry about any revelers spilling any Molsons or Labatts on their laps.

Having just completed a second year's visit to Canada (this time to the Maritimes, NS, NB & PEI, last year to the Rockies, AB & BC) with 2 close friends from Poland, I have come to appreciate our northern neighbors much more than before. It's unfortunate that we Americans tend to take Canada and Canadians for granted, when we think about them at all. This is short-sighted , annoying, and unfair. Canadians are almost always cheerful, polite, and enthusiastic about their country, and proud of its historical ties with initially the Empire, and later with the Americans, in the struggle against the world's despots and "dupeks'. Thank you, Canada, for your beautiful country, your kind and generous people, and your delicious lobster, and Happy 144th Birthday.
