So.

Once again.

Michele Bachmann says “John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa” and the media goes nuts. Ohhhhhhhh what an idiot, she confused John Wayne with John Wayne Gacy the serial killer. Ha ha ha.

Now comes word that… yes indeed… Clyde Morrison and his blushing bride Molly got married in…. Waterloo, Iowa. And settled there.

Later moving to Winterset, Iowa. Where they had their bouncing baby boy Marion.

Who grew up to become — yes indeed — John Wayne.

Not John Wayne Gacy.

John Wayne.

Read here.

Is it entirely possible Bachmann made a small mistake — the newlywed parents lived there and she thought Wayne was born there? Sure. But were his parents from Waterloo? Yes, 100% fact.

By the way, Barack Obama talked today about his 13 year-old daughter.

Problem? She’s twelve.

Not to worry. Obama’s a genius even if he gets his own daughter’s age wrong. Bachmann is an idiot if she mistakes Wayne’s parent’s residence for Wayne’s birthplace in the sentence “John Wayne was from Waterloo.”

Do you know how many people say Calvin Coolidge was from Northampton, Massachusetts?

Not true.

He was from Plymouth, Vermont. He moved to Northampton after college.

Are people who say these things idiots? No. But I bet most of them know the age of their kids.

And the Bachmann-was-thinking-of-John Wayne Gacy-idea?

Made up out of whole cloth by ignorant people with malice aforethought. And stupidly bought by some who should know better.

This country has serious problems. And this is what passes for debate? Disgraceful.

You do not have to defend yourselves, ignore them.
They will neither be swayed, convinced or change. Why would anyone even lower themselves to engage in such non-sense?

Timothy L. Pennell| 6.30.11 @ 7:46AM

Representative Bachmann. Can you pronounce the word: CORPSMAN? Do you know how many STATES there are, in the United States? Are you friends, with any Unrepentant DOMESTIC TERRORISTS? Have you ever been to a LOUIS FARRAKHAN Rally. Have you ever had a White Hating, Jew Hating, America Hating, COMMUNIST, for a Mentor? Have you ever had a White Hating, Jew Hating, America hating, MARXIST, as a Mentor. Was your Mother an Atheist/Communist? Was your father a Muslim/Marxist? Were your Grandparents COMMUNISTS? Did you grow up in INDONESIA, attend MUSLIM SCHOOLS and MOSQUES, and kneel on your Prayer Rug, facing MECCA, and pray to a God of MURDER, 5 times a day, until the age of 11? And, if elected President, would you install a RACIST Attorney General, who made MILLION$ for himself, in BONUSES, at Freddi Mac and Fannie Mae, (as the GAO describes it) by "COOKING THE BOOKS", who will only take action, if it is HIS PEOPLE who are being set upon?
John Wayne? John Wayne Gacey?
We've got SATAN in the White House, and you're worried about this Piddle Sh*t?

Bob| 6.29.11 @ 5:07PM

Bachmann's a lawyer? Man these law schools need to start remedial US Geography/History courses, in Michele's case at the kindergarten level.

DC| 6.29.11 @ 5:17PM

Obama's a president? Man the sniveling, cowardly totalitarians who voted for him and continue to ignore his own idiocy (including his geographic ignorance, remember the 57 states?) really need to read remedial texts on the Constitution, basic economics, and military strategy, so perhaps when they talk to him, they can transfer some of their knowledge to the empty vessel that is Obama's rotten skull. Any excuse for not knowing the age of his daughter? Maybe it's because he has so many bastard kids, he can't recall which prop he brought to the White (Black) House. And he and his violent racist bitch "wife" want to start sex ed at kindergarten...I suppose that's ok with you too. Thank God for the 2nd Amendment--I know I'll need it when wannabe Praetorian thugs come to try to drag me and my family off to re-education camps.

darcy| 6.29.11 @ 6:10PM

DC: Those are my initials -- and your thoughts are mine too. Of all the nefarious and evil schemes perpetrated by the Chicago thugs in the WH, it is the scheme to poison and VIOLATE -- by state sanction -- the minds and bodies of our children that is the most deserving of our utter contempt, scorn and derision. And given that Obama is the only Illinois State Senator who stood up to voice his support for infanticide (in order to "protect" a woman's right to kill the child born of her botched abortion and thus "protect" her "right" to choose), an ending to his career that suggests Mussolini's would not be surprising. God is not mocked: what you sow you will reap. Repent before it's too late.

WL| 6.29.11 @ 5:19PM

Please stop this nonsense Am. Spectator.....

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Did you people not see the DISGRACEFUL press conference today?????

Did you see our president acting like Chavez, Castro, or any other tin pot dictator today??????????????????????

Do you realize the seriousness of having a president that can act like this without his approval ratings dropping any meaningful amount....????

WE ARE IN TROUBLE...AND YOU CLOWNS ARE STILL ON THIS JOHN WAYNE GARBAGE...

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF ......

FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!

Bob| 6.29.11 @ 5:37PM

This is great. I just love these reminders of dumb cluck Michele and her geographical and historical blunders. Hannity needs to ask Bachmann if she knows that Bullwinkle once lived in her Minnesota district. I know that from watching Fractured Fairytales.

Occam's Tool| 6.29.11 @ 5:53PM

Bob,

I'm much more interested in the fact that Bachmann worked on a Kibbutz and therefore knows the problem of Arab terrorism first hand, in her skin and bones.

Reagan made plenty of verbal gaffes. Mattered for naught. Were his principles well thought out and sound? Well, since he won a major war in a peaceful fashion, greatly improved the economy, and raised American prestige to new heights, yeah, I guess they were.

This flatulence is typical of politics in the age of the sound bite. Bachmann is, as PG Wodehouse would put it, "sound on Pekes"---on beating the snot out of our enemies and stabilizing the economy. I couldn't care less if she stutters---her mind isn't arthritic, unlike Obama, Paul, Johnson, Huntsman, Romney, McCain, etc.

Bob| 6.29.11 @ 6:07PM

When Bachmann says the Mason-Dixon line is the border between Minnesota and Manitoba. Come on now everyone knows it's the border between Minnesota and Missouri.

victor| 6.29.11 @ 10:12PM

Is that you, 3/5ths Bob?

Chuck| 6.29.11 @ 7:14PM

Reagan was lucky, a President like him was needed. Timing is everything. Campaigning in 2011 his gaffes would be magnified 10 fold because of instant communication and feedback. Today he would have significant trouble especially with people like Bob on the blogger prowl jumping on him with every gaffe.

Jeffrey Lord| 6.29.11 @ 6:03PM

Bob...

Did they have 57 states in those Fractured Fairytales?

Occam's Tool| 6.29.11 @ 7:28PM

Jeff...Obama's kid will turn 13 on July 4. One week away is fairly close, and my daughter was considering herself 8 when about a month away.

Let's look at the quote:

"Malia’s 13, Sasha’s 10," the president said, even though 12-year-old Malia still has a few days to go until her July 4 birthday. "It is impressive. They don't wait until the night before. They're not pulling all-nighters. They're 13 and 10."

In a recent interview on “Good Morning America,” Obama expressed his anxieties about Malia’s upcoming birthday. “I’m not anticipating complete mayhem for the next four or five years, but I understand teenage-hood is complicated,” Obama said.

“I should also point out that I have men with guns that surround them often, and a great incentive for running for reelection is that it means they never get in the car with a boy who had a beer, and that’s a pretty good thing,” he added."

Now, I hate Obama, and think he's a putz who endangers my country every day in a variety of ways. But that quote is funny. If only he showed that concern for our safety and well-being as Americans, we'd be much better off.

I think this attempting to zing people on minutiae is ridiculous. Quite frankly, I was on TCU's varsity College Bowl team. I am VERY GOOD at this type of stuff---recall of odd facts under extreme pressure and time constraints. I'm an MD, for cryin' out loud. But this stuff is ridiculous.

I care much more that Obama shows continued disrespect for America's necessary role in the world than I do about the fact that he mispronounced "Corpsman." The mispronouncing of that simply illustrates an aspect of his compleat military ignorance, but as an isolated event would mean nothing if not connected to other actions.

I think we should grow up, people.

Jeffrey Lord| 6.29.11 @ 6:11PM

WL...

You ask...

"Do you realize the seriousness of having a president that can act like this without his approval ratings dropping any meaningful amount....????"

Indeed we do. Which is why letting the other side convince Americans our ideas are being presented by a "dumb" candidate (and all of them are dumb according to these people or will soon be labeled such) is a big, big mistake. Because once the candidate is labeled "dumb" the ideas he or she advocates are then automatically said to be "dumb." See: the presidency of GW Bush. We are now in this economic mess because Bush's ideas were dumb...inevitably, but of course, because Bush himself was dumb. That's why it's important not to let these people get away with their game. Because they are deadly serious - and we are in deadly serious trouble because of that.

Bob Grant| 6.29.11 @ 8:41PM

Jeffrey,

Don't you think these narrative issues wont be issues at all come November 20012? ...This election will be like nothing I've ever seen in my lifetime - namely what's at stake - and to think the snarky comments and false narratives generated by the other side will be game changers this election cycle is over stating it a bit.

Obama will not be able to hide from his disastrous policies regardless of the protection he receives from the mainstream media. The facts on the ground will outweigh any narrative thrown the republican candidates way.

Don't worry so much.

Lyle | 6.29.11 @ 5:19PM

Out of curiosity, how did the smartypants in the media identify Waterloo with John Wayne Gacy? He was born in Chicago from all reports. Could it be that maybe they aren't so smart after all?

R| 6.29.11 @ 5:47PM

I have not seen where the press stated Gacy was 'born' in Iowa...just 'from': Gacy and his wife moved from Illinois and settled in Waterloo, Iowa. With that said...seriously, this topic is pretty ridiculous. No one can ever be 'correct' with all of the information available instantly...someone is always looking to say, 'No, that isn't right...I just read where...blah, blah, blah....'. This should stop.

Tax All Liberals| 6.29.11 @ 5:53PM

He was in Waterloo for a couple of years and that is it.

Tax All Liberals| 6.29.11 @ 5:52PM

They thought they had something but didn't realize that Gacy only lived in Waterloo for a rather short few years as an adult. He was never from Waterloo. As you noted, he was born in Chicago and after his first prison stint returned to Chicago.

Lee| 6.29.11 @ 8:43PM

I read JWG was born in Chicago. Gee isn't that the place Obama comes from? I guess we could call JWG's birthplace, Obama's hometown? Though it's not Obama's birthplace, only the Good Lord knows where Obama was born. laugh

Occam's Tool| 6.29.11 @ 5:55PM

The other thing to be noted was that I was a College Bowl champ at TCU---destroyed the Texas A & M team solo. Yet I wouldn't be able to play this stump the weasel game all the time. This is moronic. People misspeak. The Presidency is NOT College Bowl.

Michael L. Hauschild| 6.29.11 @ 9:56PM

You know that I was a cultural geographer first, than trained to be a physical geographer. Most people do not even know what geography is; they think it is the memorizing of capitals or something. My response to anyone asking me a third grade gocha question is always the same, "How the hell would I know." Most times I don't.

DRed| 6.29.11 @ 6:08PM

Hey, when you're right, you're right.

GeorgePQ| 6.29.11 @ 6:18PM

American Spectator you keep bringing up Bachmann's gaffes in these blogs giving little people and I do mean little people like Bob a chance to bring out the scalpel and cut away. Can't you have an article on her economic policies and compare them to Romney's. Anymore talk of her gaffes and her candidacy won't survive the summer.

Jeffrey Lord| 6.29.11 @ 6:34PM

GeorgePQ..

The game is to paint Bachmann as dumb, and hence her policies. This is always the approach, as mentioned above and elsewhere.

Guaranteed, if...pick one...Romney, Pawlenty, Perry, Cain, Santorum etc were the nominee...they would be targeted as "dumb" before they finished their acceptance speech. And hence...their ideas.

Jon Stewart has famously already started in on Cain, portraying him as an illiterate boob who doesn't like to read. Nice, eh?

Occam's Tool| 6.29.11 @ 7:30PM

But Stewart isn't racist, despite the fact that he used an Amos and Andy accent... which I do not believe Cain has.

DREd| 6.29.11 @ 9:18PM

Do you watch much Daily Show, Occam? Stewart did use a stereotypicaly black accent when lampooning Cain. Which would be racist if he only did that when making fun of black guys. But part of his shtick is using stereotypical ethnic/racial accents when he makes fun of anyone.

Zoe| 7.4.11 @ 7:45AM

I bet Stewart isn't even old enough to know what an "Amos-n-Andy" accent is. He was mocking Cain's southern accent, which Cain indeed does have.

beebop| 6.29.11 @ 6:22PM

Each time the resident holds what is termed a "news conference" he exposes more and more people to his reprehensible ideas. I was listening to Rush and therefore was spared listening to his class war drivel. How many independents are backing away at 65 mph?

Bob Grant| 6.29.11 @ 7:19PM

What's more dangerous: the occasional verbal gaffe, minor factual inaccuracies (including the age of your children) or completely ignoring advisors regarding troop withdrawals? And lying about it!!

Bob| 6.29.11 @ 7:28PM

And now mud wrestling, the GOP has put me in a political state of nirvana. Mud Wrestling? between the two dumb clucks...hmmm. I just have one question. Who has the bigger biceps, Sarah or Michele?

Hollywood Fred| 6.29.11 @ 7:47PM

I like to see a mud wrestling match between Cameron Diaz and Barbara Mikulski.

Quartermaster| 6.29.11 @ 9:18PM

Brain bleach. Must. Get. That. Image. Out. Of. My. Mind.

Occam's Tool| 6.29.11 @ 7:58PM

Dear Bob: Sarah does have bigger biceps--she regularly hunts and skins, and was an athlete. And she has very nice other physical assets. Which doesn't mean she can't be brilliant and charismatic.

I had a girlfriend when in Med school who had a face and body better than most Playmates. She was a jerk, but intellectually also very sound, eventually making Law Review at Michigan (and winning a Truman scholarship as an undergrad)---I'm very glad we broke up . (My expertise on in person evaluation of Playboy Playmates is much sounder than most of you guys---My housemate's sister while I was in residency at UCLA was Cindy Wood, of Playboy (Playmate of the Decade) and Apocalypse Now fame. I know very precisely of what I speak.) She may have been a Corporate attorney for Pfizer and retired young, but at least I'm not a Democrat.

Beauty is NOT everything.

In addition, Bob, you should look at the cellphone you have in your house and car sometime. The algorithm that allows the cellphone...well, see below:

**** was an Austrian-born [Jewish, but of course--OT] American actress and scientist. Through her career as an actress, she was in more than 30 films including her biggest success as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah, the highest-grossing film of 1949.

Her contributions to science and technology have had a much more important and lasting impression.

In June 1941, ***** submitted the idea of a secret communication system with avant garde composer George Antheil. This early version of frequency hopping was intended to make radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. The invention used slotted paper rolls similar to player-piano rolls to synchronize the frequency changes in transmitter and receiver, and it even called for exactly eighty-eight frequencies, the number of keys on a piano.
On August 11, 1942 the two inventors were granted U.S. Patent 2,292,387.

The patent was immediately placed at the disposal of the US military. The idea was not feasible at the time due to the state of technology. But in 1962 during a blockade of Cuba, the military used the technology on a large scale. It was not used to guide torpedoes but to allow for secret communication with the ships involved in the naval blockade.

The frequency-hopping idea of **** and Antheil is now used for many military communications, cordless and cellular phones and WiFi networks.
Neither **** or Antheil received a cent for their invention. **** received little recognition for the accomplishment until 1997, when the Electronic Frontier Foundation gave her an award for this contribution.

Have you guessed who yet? It's Hedy Lamarr, at one time the most beautiful woman in the world. Nice Jewish girl, and American patriot. Someone who was a hell of a lot better looking and smarter than, say, Ron Paul. (Like me).

Beauty and brains can mix and match; they don't necessarily run together, but a lot of the time they do. So can stupidity and ugliness.

I like Bachmann because she wants to beat on American enemies and keep taxes and regulations low. She's bright and articulate. She understands Israeli security issues from personal experience living on a Kibbutz.

We are heading towards a financial cliff, surrounded by evil sharia advocates who have access to nuclear weapons. But this is what we argue about.

Can we please get serious? If you think Obama is a Liberal Idiot without an instinct for Economics or National security (as I do), fine. But sniping at him over his daughter's age and his missing by one week is moronic.

Similarly, this petty sniping at Bachmann is completely meaningless.

We are facing, easily, another World War with Political Islam; a war where they have demographics and faith on their side. Our demographics suck, and they will destroy our entitlement programs. Europe will become Eurabia in 20 years or less. Bachmann can discuss all that intelligently---she's a certified subspecialist in tax law. But we care about the fact that John Wayne was born elsewhere (although his parents DID live in Waterloo, Iowa for quite a while) and discuss that rather than this?

No wonder we elected Obama, and no wonder Ron Paul has his rabid acolytes despite his catastrophic Kucinich-like pronouncements and votes on foreign policy. Sheesh.

I like Michele Bachmann and hoped Mitt would pick her as his running mate. But these continuing gaffes and inane remarks in reference to mud wrestling is too much. Political sexists are having a field day and bloggers are piling on the female jokes therefore time for her to quit.

Quartermaster| 6.29.11 @ 9:21PM

Pick Romney, and you lose. Romney is just the latest version of Dole and McCain.

The One Who Runs Like a Duck| 6.29.11 @ 8:12PM

Thanks for going after Michelle today, Boob. For a while I thought you were talking about Michelle Obama, the Hitler of the Kitchen but Bachmann's ok too. I am glad you picked biceps because my Michelle is really sensitive about the size of the junk in the trunk and frankly Sarah looks pretty good by my eye. Did you see her over in Africa stuffing her face with all that fried food? Pathetic and like a typical liberal she will give you a lecture while pointing her greasy fingers at you. Can you believe it? She doesn't even know where John Wayne was born. Now me for example, I can't get my Medal of Honor winners straight but hey I am good at Trivial Pursuit. Those parents came to hear about their son and his bravery and I get it confused with another set of parent's son. Picky, picky, picky. Who the hell do they think they are? I am the President, get over it. My parents never came to any of my basketball games and I didn't make a big deal of it. All I had was a typical white person Grandma telling that some day I might get to play. Some times I forget my golf score or which shot it is but I can repeat every word of a Jeremiah Wright sermon especially the ones about white people. Lots of golf this weekend. Notice how I lectured the House on vacation and then am going on vacation. Cool huh? High speed rail to the wind farms of Martha's Vineyard, baby.

The insults, just like those that are coming from Bob, make Bachmann look better and frankly smarter. Just look at how moronic Bob comes off. Just look at how stupid Chris Matthews looks. They may get some of the minions to buy into the schtick, but the rest of us will do what Bachmann does and just look at them like they are idiots.

Welcome to Bachmann World where we conservatives have to spend 99.9% of our time defending her half-witted off the cuff remarks. My parents lived in Missouri, a state I've never set foot in, right after they got married. I guess that makes me from the Show Me State??

SOJO| 6.30.11 @ 10:08AM

I totally agree that this kind of debate is disgraceful. However, AM Spec columnists seem to be the "conservatives" that contiually bring this kind of crap up and promote it. I'll tell you this if any Republican continues to badmouth Bachman and/or Palin, they will cause their candidate to lose in the general election. Palin/Bachman have at least 10-15 million hardcore supporters and if half of them stay home, Obama wins!

Casey Abell| 6.30.11 @ 1:46PM

Everybody step back and breathe easy. Bachmann's flubs aren't too serious yet because not many are watching this early.

But here's the thing. The flubs have got to stop. Now. Sure, the Jeffrey Lords of the world will defend Michele is she says the world is flat except when it's square. But if the goofs keep coming, the ditz image will settle like a death mask.

This is where Ed Rollins comes in. The guy is a pure pain in the behind, but he's also no-nonsense with his clients. He has to sit Michele down and give her a bunch of lessons on running her brain before running her mouth.

She has to learn to admit error without looking weak. Okay, the Founders comment may have been too broad. But guys like Hamilton were strongly anti-slavery, and they set up a system of government that eventually abolished slavery, though at terrible cost.

Yeah, I made a little goof on John Wayne's hometown. But I still revere the examples of American heroism that he portrayed. Just as I admire people like Jimmy Stewart for actually putting it on the line in combat.

And then she needs better staff work to prep her for hostile interviews and vet her prepared speeches.

She can do this. But she HAS to do this. Because not everybody is Jeffrey Lord, ready with excuses for everything and anything Michele.

Ryan R| 7.2.11 @ 2:23PM

Unfortunately Micheles gaffes on history just show what kind of politician she is. If you don't know history and essentially argue a 9 year old was one of our founding fathers, you won't know what has worked in the past and what hasn't. She is a flip flopper with no clear path. No, she's not a Palin unless you consider both are inept to be in the WH. Give me Ron Paul.

Fred | 8.17.11 @ 4:23PM

Quite a bit of pearl-clutching there, Mr. Lord. Bachmann's penchant for prevarication is much more at issue than her silly gaffs.
