Taxes are at the lowest levels they've been in 50 years. We have a lot of debt. Throwing a tantrum and running away anytime someone mentions any sort of tax increase is the mark of an ideologue, not a serious politician. Looks like your dear Leader Cantor is the former, not the latter.
Conservative Bob| 6.23.11 @ 4:48PM
D the problem is spending not revenue.
At every level we are spending money we do not have not because taxes aren't high enough but because no matter the level of revenues the political class spends more.
DRed| 6.23.11 @ 4:59PM
You want to cut entitlement programs? Fine-I agree with you. If you think the deficit is a problem, though, and refuse to even discuss the possibility of some sort of tax increases combined with spending cuts, then you're an ideologue or a joke.
Conservative Bob| 6.23.11 @ 5:46PM
After spending is restructured and cut to and permanently limited to something closer to 15-18 % of GDP. Then I am in favor of completely overhauling the revenue side.
The sole purpose of the tax code should be raising revenue to support the above level of spending and service the debt. Everyone should pay. Redistribution of wealth is not the business of the tax code. Funding the legitimate function should be the sole purpose or the tax code.
Eliminate the corporate income tax. Dividends and capital gains should be taxed to not penalize long term savings and investment.
I find much of what I have read of the fair tax to be very interesting assuming that the elimination of the IRS and repeal of the 16th amendment was an ironclad first step. I think they have set the level of the consumption tax too high. Refer to my 15-18% of GDP above.
DRed| 6.23.11 @ 6:05PM
Bob, the problem is that most of America doesn't agree with you. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security-these are very popular programs. Realistically, they aren't going away. So how are we doing to pay for them? Cutting taxes further sure isn't going to get it done.
Conservative Bob| 6.23.11 @ 6:35PM
As currently structured all of these programs are going to self destruct soon. They must be totally over hauled if they are in any way to be preserved.
I think if you look at history you will see that tax cut have caused revenue to increase. I know the left often points to higher deficits resulting but I think an honest close evaluation will show that the deficits were caused not by falling revenue but the political class increasing spending faster than revenues actually increased.
We can yell names at each other all day long and blame whomever we wish but it will not change the math. The time is at hand when if we hope to have any control on what changes come and how sever the pain we must act now. The political class has been kicking the can down the road for most of my life. It is time to be adults and step up and solve the problem.
BruceBerger| 6.23.11 @ 10:15PM
Just for yucks please tell me what percentage of the deficit should be closed by spending cuts and what from tax increases in your opinion.
BruceBerger| 6.23.11 @ 10:16PM
The above question was meant for Dred to answer.

DR - feel free to pay all the additional taxes you like if you believe that is a solution to the mess that both parties have made for themselves and our country for the past 50 years.

DR - feel free to pay all the additional taxes you like if you believe that is a solution to the mess that both parties have made for themselves and our country for the past 50 years. I encourage you to do so, you and your like-minded fiscal conservatives.
LC JB | 6.24.11 @ 8:33AM
DR- Seems like your statements are merely talking points. Twice you've pointed out that anyone disagreeing with your dubious position is an ideologue, smacks of partisanship as well. Do they fax or email your daily drivel? Your entire premise is based on an assumption that some certain levels of taxation are appropriate. So what if the taxes are lowest in decades. Does that imply they should be an unspecified level ? The question for the left is what is an 'appropriate' level of taxation? You seem to think that this ephemeral point is an obligation somehow. We SHOULD run away from any discussion of raising taxes. Let's see, unemployment is a tad over 90%, so we'll take MORE money away from the folks that are blessed by having jobs. While we're at it, let's raise taxes on the businesses that employ them too. That's a good idea there. What a 'fresh' approach to fixing the economy. Liberals have this mental disorder that somehow a large scale economy is different than your household budget. A fantasy land where one can spend with abandon, charge everything and somehow you won't eventually overdraw the account to the point where you're broke. Grow up.

We don't estimate your BS, DRed. Your man has not submitted budgets, ignored his own debt commission and ran up a huge debt with wasteful spending and another entitlement. There are a whole bunch of you Democrats that aren't serious. You look at one everyday when you pull your worthless self out of bed and stare into the mirror.

Want To Fix The Economy? Cut Taxes And Go Back To The Gold Standard, Says Steve Forbes.
"Former presidential candidate Steve Forbes says that the way to get out of our economic mess is to enact "pro-growth" policies such as lower corporate taxes and a radically simplified tax code.
The CEO and editor of Forbes Magazine, Steve Forbes also wants to throw out our byzantine tax system of brackets and deductions and replace it with a simple flat tax.
Forbes also thinks the US should immediately go back on the gold standard, before more damage is done to our currency.
The ability to print money, Forbes says, encourages the government to spend money, even when it has to create this money out of thin air. Returning to the gold standard, therefore, would rein in government spending."

My goodness - another Democrat caught in the act of telling the truth. Let's go to the play-back.
WhiteBikerTrash| 6.23.11 @ 7:18PM
As a Conservative I have no problem with raising taxes. A simple economic truth states : "Anything you tax you get less of, anything you subsidize you get more of."
Now we know that 40 to 50% of the population pay no taxes. Lets raise their taxes!! Let's say to 50% and use a graduated income tax just a Karl Marx recommended, and as income goes up, percentage drops. Think of all the wealthy people we will create! The poor will disappear! Welfare housing will be a thing of the past. By the way, I'm not joking. It has yet to be tried
