Carl Gardner, R.I.P.

Carl Gardner, lead singer of The Coasters, passed away on June 12th due to complications from congestive heart failure and vascular dementia. He was 83.

The Coasters had a string of hits in the late 1950’s which remain an indelible part of the rock n’ roll pantheon. These hits included “Searchin’” (with an introduction by Steve Allen), “Yakety Yak”, “Charlie Brown” & “Poison Ivy.”

At the risk of sounding crumudgeonly, they don’t make music like this anymore.

After reading this I started humming the tunes mentioned above. The almost atonal "music" played today is a far cry from the work of groups like The Coasters. How do you hum the modern stuff? RIP.

"Late at night while you're sleepin'
Poison Ivy comes a creepin'
A-rou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound"

Actually, it think it was Leiber and Stoller who wrote Poison Ivy and a number of the other hits by the Coasters, though they were like clown princes who could make a song fun. Ditto to the R.I.P.
