Mitt Romney is effectively skipping the Ames straw poll, suggesting that he is going to deemphasize the Iowa caucuses next year. When Romney lost Iowa in an upset to Mike Huckabee in 2008, it was a major hit to his campaign. Now that Newt Gingrich’s entire Iowa team has resigned, it has raised questions about how important Iowa is going to be this time around.

But Iowa may still have a significant role, especially if the field remains more or less where it is now. Iowa will be Tim Pawlenty’s best shot to establish himself as the main alternative to Romney. If he wins the caucuses — or performs very strongly despite his anti-ethanol subsidy stance — his path to the nomination begins to come together. If Pawlenty doesn’t catch fire and he finishes behind candidates like Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, and Ron Paul, it is much harder to see how he moves into the top tier.

This space will be filled with the attendant Romney clowns braying about why “he would have won anyway,” “global warming is not relevant to voters,” “RomneyCare is not an issue” and “dogs like to ride on top of cars” - rationalizations ad nausea. The truth is he is dead meat would lose big time. If you look back over the primaries of past, the land of Harkin is not much of a launching pad anyway. Speaking as a Nebraskan with both a political and meteorological background I am torn, are there prevailing westerly’s or does Iowa simply suck that much?

For the record, I would just like to say that Gov. Romney would have won anyway. Global warming is not relevant to voters and RomneyCare is not an issue. Besides, dogs like to ride on top of cars.

All I can say to Romney is: Coward. If you can't face the Iowa voters, how in heaven are you going to face the voters in the deep south? You have to pass this gauntlet to get to the other primaries.
Like Truman said, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen (or race).

To complete the "pro" record, I would just like to say that Gov. Romney would have won anyway. Global warming is not relevant to voters and RomneyCare is not an issue. Besides, dogs like to ride on top of cars.

Actually he's right in one regard. Iowa and NH are minor players and seem to carry inordinate weight in the selection process.
Additionally, why should states such as NY, CA, NJ etc. that will never deliver an electoral vote to a GOP candidate, have such a large role in selecting that candidate?

Maybe Romney can just skip all primaries.

I think he is brave to skip Iowa, and not a coward. Iowa is out sized in its influence, and not really that mainstream. I applaud Romney for skipping it.

And may he continue to be so brave.

You forgot to speculate on this possible headline:

Palin takes Iowa win

What does that do to T-Paw's campaign?
