Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s senior presidential campaign staff resigned today. Spokesman Rick Tyler, campaign manager Rob Johnson, and strategists Dave Carney, Katon Dawson, and Sam Dawson all quit. Gingrich’s willingness to spend time on the campaign trail was reportedly an issue. Carney and Johnson have ties to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, which should fuel speculation about a Perry presidential run.

As Republican strategist Mike Murphy noted on Meet the Press, what Gingrich is doing and saying is like Belgian naval maneuvers. They may be interesting, but they are not important.

This is a sure sign that Gov. Perry is going to jump into the race.

I can hardly wait until his hinting at secession becomes a campaign ad.

I still can’t figure out what Newt meant by “right wing social engineering” with his comment regarding Medicare but it was almost certainly fatal to his aspirations. Given that SS, Medicare/Medicaid are 100% Democrat social engineering from day one such an off the wall comment had to have some basis but for the life of me I can’t figure it out. If Newt thinks these programs can be left as they are into the future and still be paid for he is sadly ill-informed on the basic actuary math.

Thom,

What about Medicare, Part D sponsored by the Bush administration?

Gingrich's comments were made in the context of a discussion of Ryan's plan. For him to say that he was not referring to Ryan's voucher plan is too ridiculous for words.

Remember, a gaffe in D.C. Is when someone tells the truth.

Say what you will, cite all the incidents of mental lapse, but this was primarily because of sitting with Pelosi on that park bench.

Yea, ideology is a communicable disease.

This is a sure sign that New is out and he was out almost as soon as he was in. Recall his Paul Ryan incident. Just a symptom.
