The Spectacle Blog

From a South Florida rental ad:

…great two bedroom and one bath unit…

Off street parking. Access to a beautiful pool area. Great kitchen with all kitchen equipment. Linens and towels. You just need your clothing.

Both bedrooms have queen size beds. Central Air.

Victoria Park is Fort Lauderdale’s great downtown Old Florida neighborhood. Walk to the Galleria Mall or Gateway Plaza. Short drive or bike ride to downtown, the beach or Wilton Manors.

Pet and gay friendly - Republican tolerant. No tea baggers.

Rent includes wireless, cable, water, trash, laundry etc - all utilities but electric.

I wonder how many Very Tolerant Individuals read this ad and thought, Wow, you had me at ‘no tea baggers,’ but, hot damn!, wireless and utilities, too! Heaven is a place on earth!

Of course, I’m all for private property rights. But, aside from blacklisting people with the wrong political views, what do you think the chances are this landlord is, too?

I'm ok with it. I don't rent to socialists, or socialize with them.

A tea bagger is a gay man. So clearly his tolerance extends only to gays who are not tea baggers. Maybe this guy is a closet Republican.

Actually, James (and this applies to Jade, too), a tea bagger is someone who bags tea. Neither one's political nor sexual inclinations have anything to do with it.

As for the sexual slang meaning of the term, one's sexual orientation is still irrelevant. Both men and women, heteros and homos, can engage in said activities.

So, then, is a fudge packer someone who packs fudge?

David C| 5.31.11 @ 12:48AM

Yes, a fudge packer is someone who packs fudge. What else would such people be called?

David C: Best AmSpec comment of the year so far...

Thank you, Shawn.

It's nice to be appreciated. :)

If the tool rents to gay men he is renting to teabaggers.

Quartermaster| 5.24.11 @ 7:57PM

You and James beat me to it.

it is a very nice neighborhood that is very gay friendly --- just not into people who embrace politicians are that Straight Supremacists and against equal civil rights for our gay children, family and friends .....

I'm with you on gay marriage--which is what I presume you're talking about here--but do you think opponents are really relegated to within the borders of the Tea Party? What about rural Dems or California referendum voters or Barack Obama, who has to be the one person in the country who went from supporting to opposing gay marriage--which is to say, in the opposite direction popular opinion has been steadily trending?

We need protection of institutions that create healthy children. Civil Unions yes, Gay Marriag eno.

"I'm all for private property rights ... what do you think the chances are this landlord is, too?"

I'd say somewhere in the 0 to 5 percent range.

Speaking of rights, private property rights would have more to do with what use he wants to make of his property than to whom he wants to rent it. That question is more a matter of freedom of association -- a right that lefties to not believe business owners have with regard to employment. So why would they respect it for landlords?

In truth, landlords are much less entitled to freedom of association than employers. One can always make his own job, but there's only so much real estate on Earth.

Quartermaster| 5.24.11 @ 8:01PM

Marriage is not a civil right, Shawn. Say what you will. I have no right to marry anyone. At all. Ever. Period.

You characters really need to get stuff straight instead of clouding issues. When you cloud issues, you cloud everything you say. Gay "Marriage" is not conservative and never will be. It is a loony left construct. Call me when a guy, with normal male plumbing, is able to impregnate his boyfriend, also with normal male plumbing. When that happens we can discuss it. Until then raving about gay "marriage" is the noise produced by the insane.

And, yes, homosexuals are mentally ill. Anyone seeing their own sex as the opposite sex is far from normal.

Shawn Macomber| 5.24.11 @ 10:53PM

I wouldn't say it is a positive right that the government must provide you, obviously, but should gay people have the right to enter into contracts they find mutually beneficial for whatever reason without the arbitrary interference of big government? I believe they do and I don't believe it is any of the government's business to say otherwise.
