The Spectacle Blog

During his Senate campaign, Rand Paul walked a careful line on foreign policy: he shared his father’s basic skepticism of interventionism but tried to be much more respectful of the majority viewpoint within the Republican Party. Sometimes that led him to state his positions differently from his father; sometimes it led him to take different positions than his father.

So it was interesting to read the Kentucky senator’s statement on President Obama’s Middle East speech. As expected, Paul slammed Obama’s liberal interventionism: “Our mistakes in foreign policy have always been from hubris. We somehow believe that we can dictate the policies of the world, and enforce them with our military and economic strength. While this might sound like a good idea to many, it has its limits and its consequences.” Yet even in opposing the Libya war, Paul took a pro-Israel line: “For example, instead of seeking proper authority from Congress and the Constitution to go to war with Libya, President Obama empowered the United Nations and the Arab League, two bodies that together endanger the security and sovereignty of our ally Israel.”

Senator Paul continued his criticism of Obama’s stance on Israel:

It is the United Nations who is threatening to impose a Palestinian state without a guarantee of safety for Israel. It is members of the Arab League who foment hostilities or refuse to recognize the right to safety and security of Israel.

But far worse than that, today it was an American President who stood before the world and once again demanded Israel act against her own strategic interest in the name of a false peace.

Peace from weakness or peace from outside coercion of Israel is a fool’s errand. Unfortunately, the President today proved himself willing to play that fool.

Israel and her enemies have fought wars for the better part of the past 60 years. And terror-supporting countries in the region have spent the better part of those years feigning interest in peace while lobbing rockets across borders.

For President Obama to stand up today and insist that Israel should once again give up land, security and sovereignty for the possibility of peace shows an arrogance that is unmatched even in our rich history of foreign policy.

Paul then concludes on a noninterventionist note:

I agree with the President. This is in fact a moment of opportunity. It is time to seize control of our foreign policy from those who have spent the past decade policing the world, trying in vain to build nations after destroying them, and bankrupting our children and grandchildren in the process.

This opportunity will pass us by if we simply repeat the same mistakes, over again.

UPDATE: Ron Paul’s statement is strikingly similar, with some twists (the elder Paul is tougher in his antiwar language and hints he thinks it might be in Israel’s long-term interests to voluntarily make concessions).

For example:

"On January 9, Ron Paul addressed Congress to voice his opposition to a House resolution expressing strong support for Israel in its invasion of Gaza, and branding Hamas as a terrorist organization. Ron Paul called for American neutrality in conflicts that have nothing to do with the United States."

The source for this? RonPaul.com.

Clint is nothing an Obama butt boy trying to stir up trouble. I like butt boys. Ron Paul is my favorite butt boy. He will actually meet you at a hotel if you say you want to talk about Austrian economics. Clint is diseased so this would be a bad idea. Time for bed Timmy. This aint gonna sit right with dem ron paulabots...fuses are gonna blow, shots and sparks are gonna start flying. Look out!

Warrior | 5.20.11 @ 4:45PM

Rand Paul's statement makes perfect sense. Anyone who believes that Israel giving up land for peace is a fool. If they gave everything but one square mile of arid desert, the arab's would remain on the war path until total annihilation has been accomplished. It is time to stop policing the world. Obama and the US has no right to tell Israel what they as a sovereign nation should or shouldn't do. Obama and his duplicity was willing to conduct military operations to protect the Sharia/terrorist aligned "citizens" of Libya yet he wouldn't lift a finger to stop a rocket being launched or a suicide bomber from hitting a civilian marketplace within the borders of Israel.

This is another Obama head fake. While everyone is crying out of for Middle East peace and foreign policy, the economy is tanking, unemployment is rising, the dollar is sinking and we are still militarily engaged in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen. Obama is still trying to backdoor cap and trade and amnesty for illegals, etc.

Occam's Tool| 5.20.11 @ 6:10PM

Thank you, Warrior. Unfortunately, Ron Paul doesn't agree with you.

simon templar| 5.20.11 @ 8:06PM

I agree.

Sean| 5.20.11 @ 4:38PM

Both Pauls have always said that Israel should do whats in its best interest. They always criticize a President that tries to interfere in other countries business so this isn't anything new.

simon templar| 5.20.11 @ 4:42PM

That may be the case, however, they need to send out the memo to their supporters who would just as soon as see Israel driven into the sea, weep all day about the poor Palestinians, and will not even recognize Israel as an ally.

Warrior | 5.20.11 @ 4:47PM

The Paul supporters I know believe that Israel is a free and sovereign nation and should be allowed to defend it's interests as such. There may be a few crazies out there, but is it really productive to paint everyone with such a broad brush?

NoBama| 5.20.11 @ 5:03PM

There are more than a few anti-Israel crazies out there, Warrior, and unfortunately they're vicious.

Perhaps if the good guys among you would shout them down once in a while we would be more trusting of your message. We have a lot in common and we need to pool our intellectual resources to fight Obama and the anti-American Democrats/Progressives/Leftists.

I like Rand Paul and his statement fills me with relief.

Warrior | 5.20.11 @ 5:51PM

It's not my message and it's not my position to shout someone down. There is no law in this nation that prevents someone from being an imbecile. However, we agree, and I've said previously, all Conservatives (there are many with Liberarian views) need to find a mutually supportable candidate and hopefully start the return to a Constitutional government.

NoBama| 5.20.11 @ 5:59PM

That's fine, but unfortunately misunderstandings will persist. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between those who merely oppose our rampant interventionism and those who have a virulent hatred for Israel.

Occam's Tool| 5.20.11 @ 6:06PM

Unfortunately, Warrior, one of the crazies IS Ron. His voting record runs down to the point where he voted against the resolution congratulating Israel on its 62nd B-day---a resolution with no money attached. Not necessarily so with his son. But I do like your comments, very much.

But most Paul supporters I have read agree more with Clint than you.

Clint| 5.20.11 @ 7:05PM

Like Many of We Tea Party Patriots, Dr. Ron Paul Wants The U.S. & Our Big Government American Taxpayer Confiscated Money To Stay Out Of Their Foreigner Food Fights.

Dr. Ron Paul:
“I am not the only one who can see the absurdities of our foreign policy. We give $3 billion to Israel and $12 billion to her enemies. Most Americans know that makes no sense.

“We need to come to our senses, trade with our friends in the Middle East (both Arab and Israeli), clean up our own economic mess so we set a good example, and allow them to work out their own conflicts.”

Warrior | 5.20.11 @ 11:57PM

I think like most things in this country, the vocal minority seem to gather more of an audience than the quiet majority.

simon templar| 5.20.11 @ 8:08PM

Perhaps not, but Clint has too much influence on me. All I hear is the rants of the big L's out here.

Smirking Weasel| 5.20.11 @ 5:06PM

They've also been clear-if you bother to listen-that Israel's problems, and all foreign countries, are their own and that solving those problems, including guaranteeing the continued existence of Israel, are solely Israel's to deal with.

Occam's Tool| 5.20.11 @ 6:07PM

No, SW, Ron has come out against Israeli self defense many, many times.

Occam,

Paul (and for that matter Pat Buchanan) defended Israel's bombing of Iraq in the early 80s. Sovereignty of course is a foreign concept to you as you put another nation ahead of your own, but try to grasp the concept.

It was no less than Bibi and the neocons who wrote A Clean Break in 1996 which advocated ending US aid to Israel. So you are on the Left, with Obama, in advocating continued aid.

Of course, you don't really care about this issue, so what is the point?

Bruno| 5.20.11 @ 8:09PM

Clint's little buddy C Bowen chimes in with his brilliant points. He read a book once and knows it all. Great trading nations will have to extend power. This was learned fairly early in our country's history. Pathetically poor agrarian states like paleo cons dream about will be used by powerful states. These past and future Obama supporters shouldn't be paid any attention. Pat Buchanan should stick to his revisionist World War II fantasies.

Trust me, we get it. Smart guys like you are willing to ally yourself with traitors to advance your cause--doesn't take much reasoning you either have a government job, or work for UT/Lockheed/Boeing/Hallibutron/ or fill in the blank contractor--I assume one I have never heard of.

I get it. Frankly, I respect that point of view. I am sure you have kids to take care of, or rather have to pay an ex-wife after the lawyers jobbed you--I understand that.

Nevertheless, that is no basis for a foreign policy--where a small nation captures a faction of the electorate--I'd certainly take the Realists of the Bush I crowd over such an arrangement of convenience, being a good Republican that I am.

That you bother to post on an anon-forum, makes me think your side is starting to have trouble sleeping at night.

And hence, I'll sleep better.

Bruno| 5.22.11 @ 8:25PM

The conspiracy grows. You're a kook bowen. Only bigotry could explain your willingness to think badly of the 63% of your fellow citizens who have sympathy towards Israel. By the way that makes you part of a faction. I sleep well n0w but a C Bowen backed government would keep me up at night. I don't trust those who make suicide pacts. Give Timmie a big wet kiss.

C Bowen| 5.23.11 @ 6:11PM

At last-- that is the whole point, Bruno. Glad it hit home.

You'll vote Obama or RINO, because you know who the real threat is; hence you and your type over due your dislike for Obama. It's just pretend--we get it.

Red Phillips | 5.20.11 @ 5:52PM

I have mixed feelings about this. This statement is technically non-interventionist as he decries the US trying to dictate terms to Israel as he should. But it is not neutral. It may be smart short term politics, but it doesn't challenge the current atmosphere of the debate which should be the long term non-interventionist goal. It concedes too much to the current excessively Israel centric climate. Like I said about Rand Paul's hair splitting statement during the canpaign, this does not "avoid the appearance of pandering."

What would be more clear and more helpful long term is an unequivical statement that the President of the United States shouldn't have anything to say about the Israel/Palestine conflict one way or the other because it is none of our business.

Rand Paul sees certain truths: Obama's "foreign and National Security policies are flawed in many ways including spending our money on nations that basically are our enemies not to mention money we do not have. Allowing another organization ( the UN ) to run our foreign policy
and Obama dictatorial Presidency. In addition--one does not have to be a neo con to believe that Israel is a good investment and to see the absurdity of Obama's statement--even a cave man can do that.

Suppose that North Korea had launched 8,000 rockets and mortars against South Korea over the past five years. Would the U.S. government urge South Korea to placate the North by giving it land where 350,000 South Koreans currently live, including part of the South Korean capital of Seoul? That would be absurd, right? Suppose that China had launched 8,000 missiles against Taiwan over the past five years. Would the U.S. government advise Taiwan to surrender land to the Peoples Republic of China? Why does the U.S. government continue to call upon Israel to give up its territory to the Palestinians, who have launched thousands of rockets and mortars against Israel over the past few years, and committed savage acts of terrorism against Israeli civilians? The Palestinians, a term which includes several terrorist organizations, overwhelmingly hate Jews and want to destroy Israel. In contrast, about 1.5 million Arabs (Muslims) currently live in peace and security in Israel. The aggressors are the Muslim Palestinians, Hamas (which is the same as the Muslim Brotherhood), and other terrorist groups. The Jews are not the aggressors, and they have lived in the area since 1,000 years before Islam was invented. Why does the U.S. government think for even a minute that Israel should appease Palestinians? Is the United States afraid to anger the Muslims, or is the U.S. government inherently anti-Semitic? Is Israel an ally of the United States, or not?

Obama needs to address the following.

Full and unconditional diplomatic recognition of Israel

Full and unconditional recognition of Israel’s right to exist within secure borders

Full cessation of all acts of war against Israel, including but not limited to: full cessation of all economic boycotts and embargoes against Israel; full cessation of military action against Israel by independent states (Syria, Iran) AND their proxies: Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade, ET. AL. (that is, EVERY single proxy)

Netanyahu and Israel are right to say to Obama: NO DEALS until the above basic requirements are met.

irish19| 5.23.11 @ 10:59AM

zero is in the midst of a re-election campaign. He needs the support and funding of liberal Jews in this country to pull it off. Therefore, he says nice things about Israel and appears to support secure borders. If he gets back in, the tune will change. Especially since he will no longer have to worry about re-election.
