Enter Newt

Newt Gingrich is officially jumping into the presidential race tomorrow, and Walter Shapiro argues that “Gingrich remains a curiously undervalued stock in the Republican presidential portfolio.” Shapiro may be onto something; the field is weak enough that it’s not impossible to imagine Gingrich outperforming the conventional wisdom. Given his liabilities, it’s hard to see Newt winning the nomination (and even harder to see him winning the general election), but he could certainly make a strong showing in some early primary/caucus states.

I'm not especially a fan on Mr. Gingrich, but I think the conventional wisdom on his "liabilities", like much current conventional wisdom, is stuck in the past, does not recognize how rapidly our world is changing and how voters' attitudes and expectations are changing.

I guess references to his "liabilities" refer to his "messy personal life", yes? Well, this isn't 1965 anymore.

People are looking for solutions, to the economy in particular and to government in general. I don't think most voters much care about how many marriages he's had. If he's got the right answers, he'll do well.

But you forget how the media (news and entertainment) relentlessly criticize, mock and spin against anyone from the GOP side. Its in everthing from the NY Times down to The View and Entertainment Tonight. The media is powerful and if they don't like you, you are screwed. See Palin for proof. Her views are common sensed mainstream conservative but constant mocking by the media has made her unelectable.

A woman who built herself up from the local PTA to become governor and then VP candidate would noramlly be the stuff of Hollywood but the MSM has turned her into a joke. She is the true "femininst", not Hillary. Palin had/has no connections. She is entirely self-made. But it doesn't matter if the NYC/Hollywood axis doesn't like you.

His conservative futurism is double minded Toffler-garbage. Too many people will see through it-- Newt wont ever be president. Guaranteed.

Derek Leaberry| 5.10.11 @ 9:27AM

The collapse of marriage is indeed one of the most important issues of our times.

Alan Brooks| 5.10.11 @ 10:31AM

ALL my friends are happily married, so the institution of marriage cannot be quite as threatened as some say it is.
NOT ON ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST YET.

So, what else is new?

Newt has always been just off stage waiting to make an entrance! Booing him back off stage or yanking him back with the hook has never discouraged him.

Now if he was only smart enough to wear a vaudeville clown outfit...............................?

Michael L. Hauschild| 5.10.11 @ 8:20AM

Park bench, Nancy. the only thing that would have been worse is if he would have leaned over and french kissed her.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 5.10.11 @ 9:03AM

Actually, that would have made it more interesting.

I would have rather seen two convicted bank robbers on that bench complimenting TARP. It would have been an interesting corollary.

PCC| 5.10.11 @ 8:43AM

Well, those are some powerful liabilities not linked to his marital indiscretions, I'll have to give you that!

I Survived Arlen Specter| 5.10.11 @ 9:05AM

Enter Newt? Someone please kindly direct him to the exit, stage left. Nancy's waiting outside in the Smart Car. They are late for rehearsal for the new AGW commercial.

LarryK| 5.10.11 @ 1:46PM

What a dope he was! Snarlin' Arlen.

C Bowen| 5.10.11 @ 9:18AM

Pawlenty and Gingrich will compete for the global warming Republican vote.

Derek Leaberry| 5.10.11 @ 9:26AM

For all those Republicans who support moral squalor and self-absorbed narcissism, Gingrich is your man.

Too Many Tims| 5.10.11 @ 10:39AM

But...he did it for America.

Zilla | 5.10.11 @ 9:56AM

Stupid GOP yeah let's back another elite who can't win. Ugh.

Herman Cain will be the next president if the stupid GOP doesn't screw it up by backing another weak candidate.

TruthSayer| 5.10.11 @ 10:11AM

Although I like Newt, I would never vote for him in a primary. HE'S GOT NO CHANCE! Surely his ego is not so large to see that basic fact. I think this is a big promotional tour for Newt aka Trump.

rightasrain| 5.10.11 @ 12:18PM

I read a good article yesterday about how Newt really doesn't fill any niche needed by the GOP---he's not a tea partier, not a Washington outsider and will never appeal to independents. Additionally, it noted that his liabilities run deeper than just his marital shenanigans in that although he brilliantly maneuvered his way into the speakership, he was so bad once he got there that no one ever wants to see him in a position of power again.

J.C.Eaton| 5.10.11 @ 12:22PM

Thanks, but No Thanks.

PattyMor| 5.10.11 @ 1:52PM

Sorry Newty, but your stink on the couch with Miss Nancy precludes you from becoming President. This is shallow and opportunist thinking; jumping on the bandwagon. If Miss Nancy had jumped over the cliff, would you have joined her?

Stick with you think-tanking. You can remain the center of attention without having to actually do something or lead the nation back to prosperity.
