“U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” vs. “Death to America”

Some clergy have come out to publicly condemn our “celebration” of Osama bin Laden’s death.

Father Edward Beck, a Catholic priest in New York City, has stated, “I am uncomfortable with the killing of Osama bin Laden being celebrated like a Superbowl win.” Last night, he went on The O’Reilly Factor to discuss his views. When O’Reilly asked him how the response to the death of bin Laden was any different than the response to the end of WWII on VE Day or VJ Day, Beck replied, “But when you watch these people celebrating how does it make us any better than those in the Mideast who celebrate when America falls?”

Beck’s views of moral equivalence are echoed by George Pitcher, an Anglican priest in London. Writing in The Telegraph, Pitcher argues:

We have to be very careful about our response to the killing of Osama bin Laden. The West was appalled and deeply offended by the street celebrations in Tehran and elsewhere after 9/11, but how do rednecks in Washington DC chanting “USA! USA!” after the shooting of Osama and other members of his household compare with that?

Absolute rubbish.

Osama bin Laden declared war on the United States by telling Muslims it was their solemn duty to kill Americans be the military or civilian. Members of bin Laden’s organization carried out his fatwa on September 11, 2001. The response to the death of bin Laden was in part to praise the bravery of our soldiers and in part to remind evildoers that they reap what they sow. Those in the Middle East who danced in the streets following the attacks of September 11, 2001 chanting “Death to America!”did so out of hatred of people they deemed to be infidels. They delighted in the deaths of men, women and children.

I cannot help but think of the celebrations which broke out in the streets of Rafah following the murder of the Fogel family in the West Bank settlement of Itamar back in March. If neither Beck nor Pitcher can discern between the death of Osama bin Laden and the death of a three month old baby who had her throat slit and was decapitated because she was Jewish then I am left with no choice but to declare that both men are unworthy of the cloth.

Actually, I was stunned to see (within 60 seconds of the President making his announcement) a "spontaneous" crowd appear in front of the White House waiving American flags and professionally made OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 campaign signs.

Yeah, must have been a bunch of tourists walking the streets of DC at midnight on a Sunday who happened to also have their American flags and campaign signs tucked away in their fanny packs just in case they heard any historic news and join a spontaneous celebration while walking to the Smithsonian (again, AT MIDNIGHT)...

No way they could have just happened to have the signs laying around, let alone time to grab them and get down there that quickly. It's DC and I know it takes a LONG time to move around at any time of the day. We're talking the vast, vast majority of the folks at that location would've taken the Metro.

We did. The images I saw of the football game chanting were those of the sycophant supporters of Obama holding signs for re-election, the over the top exuberance and politicizing of the event on the View, the childish rantings of Stewart, and the Geraldo glee contrasted widely with the sober satisfaction coming from Giuliani, Rove, Hannity, and many other conservatives. So, what exactly do you disagree with? What we in this thread are objecting to is the hypocritical rubbish and moral equivalency that these two liberal clergy are trying to foist on the public. Being of good cheer over the capture and killing of a mass murderer does not make us savages. Killing a family and handing out free cakes, trinkets, and shooting off guns would be more like the savage behavior you decry. Yes, this is not a game but a war for our very lives and civilization. We are not going to be PC'd into walking around with our tail between our legs, apologizing, and being sensitive to the feelings of these fanatical evil enemies either.

Look, let's run down what I believe, stripped of gratuitous insults towards you know who:

1) we are in a deadly war with advocates of Sharia law, and demographics are not necessarily in our favor.

2) kicking 3rd world ass is good clean fun, particularly if they are advocates of Sharia.

3) Except for the military, every expenditure by government needs to be evaluated by the PJ O'Rourke "would you kill your grandmother for this" standard (Grandma doesn't pay taxes, she goes to jail; she tries to escape from jail, she gets shot."). For example, my guvmint job consists of treating dangerous mentally ill people to the point where they can be released safely to the public. Yup, that meets the Grandma test, like police and fire fighting services. Using public fisc to pay for football stadiums for billionaires does not (the only thing the generally odious JHarp ever got right).

4)The military starts off with a presumption of grandmother acceptable until proven otherwise.

5)I'm not a big fan of attempting to nation build savages unless it can be shown to benefit the US directly. Nor do I abandon friends who would give blood for me.

5)Taxes should be kept as low as possible to meet governmental responsibilities, and should NEVER be used as a means of societal change. Producers should be lauded, not attacked.

I think this is in line with your views, too. Please forgive me my occasional intemperate expressions of my views towards a certain someone. He's just an irresistable fire-hydrant for me, as well as being an overt antisemite who "has no concern" over the beheading of 3 month olds by savages (I have the quote, Clint---I'll be happy to produce it). Otherwise, I try to be very nice.

Also, Simon, sometimes these things are out of order. Really, I generally despise Clint and John the Islamist, disagreeing with them harshly (look up Clint on Jewish Nobel Prizes for true ROTFL material), and disagree with some others, but much more politely. I try to be very polite when disagreeing, because some of the people here are VERY bright, and 90% of the time I'm going to agree with them, or respectfully disagree (I like RCV personally, for example, although I agree with him on very little). Ken comes to mind, you, a bunch of others. (JPII, for one)

The things I have a particular PROFESSIONAL expertise on are matters of Mental Health and Health delivery systems, as well as pharmaceutical research relating to Mental Health. On that stuff I can do University level library research for my arguments, backed by a very broad clinical background. I don't suffer fools lightly on these issues, because I'm the guy that cleans up the mess, and, hey, I scored a 92% on my reboard exam, one of the highest in the Country.

I generally believe that Government will screw up most things, and I have worked with, or for, governments for most of 20 years (I dislike collection work) because I like a steady paycheck.

I also use this site as a place to vent frustration, which would be unfair to my favorite target, except for the fact that he enjoys it so much.

But I much prefer to debate issues. Interestingly, I have not found as I grow older that I see more shades of gray. I do see areas of increasing inertia, though, and my own work to move the lever of government the tiniest little way in the direction of more efficient and effective treatment for the Mentally Ill (and cheaper, overall, as well) has shown me what an incredible deadstick weight government can have on progress.

Again, you are a delight, and I look very forward to swapping opinions.

I respectfully disagree with you Quin. Each and every murder, rape etc legal trial's conviction of the accussed defendant results in the victim's relatives and loved ones celebrating the results. Additionally, these victim's families occassionally are allowed to speak to the convicted/sentenced defendant thereafter in court, and their words are anything but complementary and are often very graphic and specific. It the old saying that ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS in reversal terms. Words do not always translate into actions, and the words of aggreived victims/citizens/residents of this country have every moral right to express their pleasure at the death of this ANIMAL [no that's an offense to same, he was a cretin, a piece of excrement, and as such does not deserve the civility due to human beings (since he was not one himself). I would request that anyone arguing this point simply go online and google the 9/11/01 twin tower youtube etc videos of some of the victims leaping/falling to their deaths due to same from 70 stories above; or the popping sounds heard by rescue firemen in the south tower that represents the sound of victims hitting the concrete floor/grounds outside the north tower.
