The Spectacle Blog

A few days ago, I took John Steigerwald, a former Pittsburgh sports anchor, to task for blaming Giants fan Bryan Stow for the attack he endured following opening day at Dodger Stadium. Stow remains in a medically induced coma.

Steigerwald was, in fact, subject to a great deal of criticism for his position and deservedly so. Today, he issued a half-hearted apology. While Steigerwald expressed regret for causing Stow’s family any pain he blames the internet for the response he received to his article. Steigerwald said he had not receive one complaint until the article went viral two days after it went to print. But why did the article go viral? Because what Steigerwald had to say about Stow was so vile.

If Steigerwald was truly sorry he would accept full responsibility for his words and not blame it on the internet. The web might have disseminated Steigerwald’s words to a wider audience but it doesn’t change the fact that Steigerwald still wrote them. Steigerwald writes, “Nowhere in my column did I suggest Brian Stow deserved the beating.” But then why would Steigerwald entertain asking Stow why he thought it was a good idea to wear a Giants jersey to a game at Dodger Stadium if he didn’t think Stow deserved the beating or at the very minimum invited the attack? Steigerwald still doesn’t get it and probably never will.

He's a clown. He knows exactly what he did. He used his own personal opinion about adults and jerseys to mock Stow and claim that Stow PROVOKED THE ATTACK HIMSELF by wearing the jersey.

This puke never tales responsibility for his words. He just blames others.

If he had any balls what he should have said was this: "Look, I f-d up, I used my own personal agenda about adults and sports jerseys to make fun of Mr. Stow. and for that I am sorry"

If he did that? IMO people would cut him some slack. But these half-assed explanations only make him all the more pathetic.

Mr. Stow had every right to wear his Giants jersey. This ugly, senseless attack was gang related, and is just another terrible consequence of our out of control illegal immigration policies.

Prayers for Bryan Stow and his family.

And you know the people who perpetrated this were illegals how, exactly?

Scared white people are pathetic.

Have you ever lived in Los Angeles and watched as it declined into a decrepit third world city? Unless you have, STFU!

Lousy Liberal white boys like you are afraid of the truth.

Opposing fans wear their teams jerseys, hats, etc. to games all the time. I've worn my Yankees hat and jersey at Fenway Park and never was I threatened. Took alot of ribbing from Red Sox fans, but it was all in good fun. So to imply that Bryan brought this on himself is just ludicrous.

Another example of why newspaper writers should not determine who belongs in Baseball's Hall of Fame!

And have you noticed that they are generally wrong on the economy, politics and most other issues of importance to this nation?

Writers for newspapers and other publications aren't any smarter or better educated than the general public. Their job is to sell newspapers for the publishers who hire them and they do it by stoking controversy.

When they leave this employment for other employment it is very often in the field of Public Relations where they sell their services to the highest bidder.

Thank God for the speed, ubiquity and mobility of today's communication environment. Now we can all quickly read, post and comment on such vile writing from those who think they live in the old world of printing presses and paperboys.

It's even better when they don't understand it.

I'd never heard of Steigerwald before this contemptible column, so I won't try to judge him as a columnist.

The only possible defense I can offer is this: perhaps he had already been writing for years that grown men look silly when they wear a lot of pro sport paraphernalia. Maybe he's ALWAYS believed that grown men who wear Yankee caps and Steeler jerseys are immature goofballs. And if he'd written a column saying that a few months ago, or a few years ago, nobody would have thought twice about it (at worst, some people would have thought him a killjoy).

But the time to make that argument is NOT while an innocent man is lying in the hospital in a coma! If Mr. Steigerwald can't see that and offer a REAL Apology, he's probably a genuine heartless jerk.

Journalists: 1/2 step above Lawyers, 1 step below Child Molestors on the Moral Rating scale. I've known quite a few.

Not Stow's "fault" by any means, but there are places where (right or wrong) wearing the opposing team's colors is not a good idea, no matter how much pride you have in your team. Saw a guy in an Elway jerset thrown into a urinal trough at the Coliseum during a Raider game a while back...

Jack| 4.18.11 @ 6:07PM

Raiders' thug fans were the same vermin who attacked Stow.
