The Spectacle Blog

Conservative opinions of the compromise deal struck late last night, which averted a shutdown of the federal government, are decidedly mixed. Andrew Stiles of National Review was triumphant, applauding “Boehner’s robust leadership.” And by avoiding the shutdown scenario — which some Democrats clearly relished as an opportunity to excoriate Republicans as “extremists” — Boehner’s compromise deal “allows the Republicans to live again and fight another day,” as our own Jim Antle observed in the wee hours.

My own midnight mood was disgruntled. It appears that Republican leaders used pro-lifers as a bargaining chip, making a show of standing firm on the defunding of Planned Parenthood, only to abandon that position at the last minute. The GOP thus made a winner of Chuck Schumer, who had vowed the Senate would “never, never, never” agree to cut the taxpayer subsidy to Planned Parenthood.

Basic rule of thumb: It’s not a conservative victory if Chuck Schumer has any reason to smile.

Beyond the GOP’s disappointing (but by no means unprecedented) abandonment of social conservatives, the amount that Boehner’s bargain would cut from the 2011 budget, about $39 billion, represents something less than 1/30th of this year’s deficit. So if this “historic” reduction of federal spending (to borrow Harry Reid’s expression) charts our future course, the United States might achieve a balanced budget by 2042.

This sober fiscal reality makes GOP triumphalists look a lot like Charlie Sheen boasting that his drug-fueled career meltdown was “winning.” But so long as Speaker Boehner is not claiming to be a “total frickin’ rock star from Mars,” at least there is hope that this might be the first step toward budget sobriety. However, my grassroots Tea Party friends, who are screaming “betrayal” and vowing to support primary challengers against every congressional Republican incumbent next year, are certainly justified in their dissatisfaction with what Boehner called “the best deal we could get.”

In their discontent with half-measures and “compromise” victories, grassroots conservatives remind me of the ancient Athenians. In 432 B.C., Thucydides tells us in his History of the Pelopponesian War, the reluctance of Sparta to resist Athenian expansion was condemned by a Corinthian ambassador, who described the relentless and daring spirit of the Athenians:

“And what they have planned but not carried out, they think that in this they lose something already their own; what they have attempted and gained, that in this they have achieved but little in comparison with what they mean to do.”

What Boehner has achieved is less than what conservatives had hoped, and thus they count it as a loss. Even if it is a victory, however, conservatives consider it “but little in comparison with what they mean to do.” And so in answer to the question of what conservatives will next demand from Republican leadership, the answer is simple: More.

Thanks, Robert, for your usual excellent commentary, but I respectfully disagree with your [I think] conclusion/point. I'm more in agreement with Quin Hillyer, Mike Huckabee, etc who point out that politics is an ongoing event, not a static one. As the old saying goes, ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY, nor will it be dismantled in a single day either. This liberal governmental GREAT SOCIETY buildup has been occurring throughout my entire substantial lifetime, and a single event like the present budget fight will not be able to completely eliminate same. It will take time. The upcoming 2012 budget battle, in addition to that concerning the debt ceiling, will continue the conservative battle!!!!!!!!!

I have said over and over again that the elites of Republican party will fold about all issues fiscal and social to Obama and the Democrat leadership. Republican leadership has no political will to change the disastrous course we are on. They are as bloated with tax payers dollars and a sense of entitlement to our hard earned money as the Democrats. I will say it again. Obama will win a second term and the House could easily swing back to Democrats. If that happens God help us all.

What, by this action, was done with the Federal budget:
.
A family with income of $26,000 a year is spending $38,000. (Add eight zeroes to each of those figures and you have the federal budget.)
.
The so-called “man of the house” tells his family, “We can’t go on like this. Our credit cards are near their limit, and soon we won’t even be able to pay the interest on them. We need to spend less, so let’s cut spending this year by $630 to $37,370”
.
After a few days of conflict at home, he can’t bear the pressure. He goes back to his family and sheepishly tells them he will be satisfied if they cut spending by only $390, and that he will accept the family spending $37,610.
.
Why should we have any confidence Republican leaders will have the courage to address the remaining $11,600 in my example (multiplied by 100 million in the federal budget) when they can’t hold out even a weekend over a lousy $240 that won't even begin to address the problem?
.
I’m thoroughly disgusted with not just them, but my supposedly conservative Congressman that voted them into positions of leadership. Why give majorities to Republicans when the allow Democrats to dictate the agenda and the results on any issue of consequence?

Boehner and company lost when they failed to anticipate that Obama would use military pay as their ace-in-the-hole card. The last minute CR to fully fund the troops indicates they figured it out, but too late. We can only hope the Speaker learned the error of their ways. Obama-Pelosi-Reid wanted unrestricted spending in 2011 and except for this little trim they got it. As long as Obama determines who gets paid and Reid decides what gets voted on it would be foolish to expect Boehner to do much better than he did.

beebop| 4.9.11 @ 12:42PM

What exactly has changed in the public discourse? Nothing. They are still spending more money than we have, led by an out of touch idealogue who thinks we should all trade our cars for highbreds and take every few days off for a well deserved vaca. A full week of grand standing on the steps of the Capitol would have done wonders for the right thinking of any Independent who still believes that the dems know better. Not funding the soldiers while insisting that the funds flow to the real baby killers? Seriously?

The 2011 budget was but a skirmish in the long battle back to fiscal sanity. I'd call it a stalemate. A small win, but no earthquaking deal. If the Rats really wanted to get $100B in cuts they should have proposed $200 B and left more bargaining room. The Demons will wail and cry no matter what figure is proposed, so might as well make it bigger and make them defend the wasteful spending.

The real test will be over the debt celing. If the Rats lift it without a balanced budget amendment without tax increases, we will know the republic is lost.

So onward and upward to 2012. Just hope the republic lasts that long.

Instead of the “line in the sand” that the public demanded we suffered more compromise, issue riders, and capitulation. The Dems dropped the ball last year when they had the House, Senate and White House and still did not pass a budget for 2011. If they had, we would not be having this conversation. Instead, the Republican House seized on this opportunity to lay down a marker about spending. But the two big battles remain. First, a debate about the transformative Ryan 2012 and beyond budget. Then that debate will be followed by the 2012 elections. By that time, the parties will be staked out for the voters to decide between limited government and the European model. All in all a very successful conclusion to the opening act.

TAS ate my post but here you go again.

"Abortion services account for about 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s activities. That’s less than cancer screening and prevention (16 percent), STD testing for both men and women (35 percent), and contraception (also 35 percent). About 80 percent of Planned Parenthood’s users are over age 20, and 75 percent have incomes below 150 percent of the poverty line. Planned Parenthood itself estimates it prevents more than 620,000 unintended pregnancies each year, and 220,000 abortions. It’s also worth noting that federal law already forbids Planned Parenthood from using the funds it receives from the government for abortions."

"And if Planned Parenthood loses funding, what will mainly happen is that cancer screenings and contraception and STD testing will become less available to poorer people."

And guess what happens then you dumbf*ck.

Taxpayers get to pay for cancer treatments, STD treatments, and more children whose parents can't take of them. All gets dumped on the taxpayers.

jharp| 4.9.11 @ 2:34PM

The services Planned Parenthood provides save the federal government a lot of money. It’s somewhat cold to put it in these terms, but taxpayers end up bearing a lot of the expense for unintended pregnancies among people without the means to care for their children. The same goes for preventable cancers and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. You can find a lot more information about Planned Parenthood and its services here.http://www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/newsroom/politics-policy-issues/fact-sheets-reports-32754.htm

12% of Planned Parenthood's funding goes to abortions.

"PP performed 332,278 abortions in 2009, about the number of people who lived in Cincinnati that year.
The 332,278 abortions PP performed over the 365 days of 2009 equals an average of 910 lives terminated per day--or about 38 an hour or one every 95 seconds."

Planned Parenthood kills one baby every 95 seconds and we pay for this slaughter every year with $326.88 million of our taxes or $932 an abortion. No wonder our country is going to hell.

41% of Americans don't even file income tax returns. Secondly, out of the 59% of us who do file tax returns, 43.4 million out of the 136 million tax returns filed face a zero or negative tax liability. So if 32% (43.4/136) of the those who file don't owe any taxes, and if 41% don't even file income taxes, then that equals 73% who don't pay any income taxes. That leaves the rest of us.

Gentlemen I think everyone has missed the true danger.
For the first time the withholding of military pay was used by Democrats as a tactic to club the Republicans into submission.
Remember, once the Democrats find a useful tactic, they will use it over and over for decades.

Apparently Obama and Reid are so ignorant of military history that they are unaware of the extreme danger of playing political games with military pay.
Historically depriving the military of pay was a good way to be the subject of a involuntary regime change by military coup.
The US Military has a proven track record of causing the same in foreign lands.

There is a real unwritten social contract in which the Military stays out of Domestic Politics in exchange for a constant paycheck and defined lifetime benefits.
The Military personal does not get payed enough to survive inconsistent pay by military design.

Obama and Reid broke that contract unaware that by doing so it will force the Military to respond or face a revolt in the ranks.
The Military will tolerate a great deal of abuse but political games with the soldiers paycheck is not one of them.

The Obama, Reid and the Democrats are in a far more dangerous place by playing budgetary games than they realize.
This could blow up the US Government suddenly and without warning.

Faux opposition to the liberal/progressive Great Society death march melts again and establishment Republican/conservatives insist defeat is really a small, so small it might not even exist, victory.

We're assured that like Rome, our Great Society wasn't built in a day. And true enough, each progressive victory depends on the inevitable collapse, the (by now) predictable failure of the "opposition party" so as to contribute to that Great Society's, um, greatness.

These sell outs and betrayals, despite the soap opera theatrics, are nothing more or less than failures. We may rightly attribute those failures to a uniform and obvious lack of courage throughout the Republican party. And the obvious lack of any intelligent long range strategy employed against that Great Society death march. But failure is failure. And consistent failure should be considered a choice and a strategy all its own.

I find it curious that these predictable failures, and the harsh realities those failures impose upon rank and file Americans, are always understandable and never held against the ineffectual, corrupt and pandering Republicans. Never. The failure is always the "best deal possible" or the "first small step" in an expanding winning strategy that will really work this time or, my favorite; the fault of rank and file Americans who aren't dedicated enough. Haven't tried hard enough to elect honorable representatives who'll actually represent their constituents.

No offense but Conservatives, (except the Tea Party, which hurriedly backed a profligate and immoral Republican political organization and will no doubt make appropriate adjustments for the next cycle) are looking more and more like idiotic Chicago cubs fans. Their guys don't ever have to win as long as it looks like they're really, really trying and the manager has a sincere demeanor in the post game interview.

Tax credits are not the same as tax cuts. A tax cut decrease the rate at which one is taxed. A tax credit is a benefit paid to an individual to increase one's net income.

Obama's claim that he'll cut taxes for 95% of Americans is misleading for this reason: he misconstrues tax credits to mean tax cuts.

So, when Obama says he'll cut taxes for 95% of America, what he really means to say is he's going to adjust the progressiveness of the tax rate in order to fund tax credits for the lowest tax bracket--the one that doesn't pay any taxes at all. That's not a tax cut, its a refundable credit, a redistribution of wealth. The merits of such a shift in tax policy is debatable. It isn't, however, a tax cut for 95% of America.

I am tired of standing in grocery store lines and watching the family of obscene numbers use a welfare CREDIT CARD to purchase items I deny myself knowing that tax dollars support that expenditure. No one expects a return to "yessir, yesma'm," but a simple understanding of cause and effect would be in order, don't you think? If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result, then Planned Parenthood is the perfect model. How successful have they in fact been if the number of abortion RISES every year? If an airline CRASHED more airplanes each successive year, would that spell success to a douche like you?

Despite how bad it tastes and smells, this is a victory, albeit a bad tasting and smelly one. Once again it exposes the Democratic Party for what it really stands for, spending money we don't have, killing babies, paying for things that should pay for themselves, and throwing tantrums when they have to cut "anything" they support. The gap between the two ideologies, Left & Right, has never been clearer, from this Budget battle, to Obama's Healthcare Law, to the disgusting reactions by the Union Workers in Wisconsin, to the crazy reaction to the shooting spree in Arizona. The Left is showing everybody where they stand, and nobody wants to stand with them anymore, except the hardcore Converts (but they're lost causes anyway, and only about 20% of the Population). The Elections in 2012 will clarify everything, are we staying on this path to destruction, or are we turning away from last Century's Liberal Commie policies? So this isn't the greatest win ever, but it's still a "W" in the Win/Loss column nonetheless, and I'll take a win anytime, even if it tastes really bad, and smells like a Hippie!!

Not all taxpayers get paychecks from an employer, and those who don't would not get the credit.
So Obama's statement glosses over a few important details about who would get "tax cuts " ( refundable tax credits) under his plan. If you're talking about everyone, it's 81 percent.

The Tax Foundation estimates that under the Obama plan 63 million Americans, or 44% of all tax filers, would have no income tax liability and most of those would get a check from the IRS each year. The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis estimates that by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS.

The total annual expenditures on refundable "tax credits" would rise over the next 10 years by $647 billion to $1.054 trillion, according to the Tax Policy Center. This means that the tax-credit welfare state would soon cost four times actual cash welfare. By redefining such income payments as "tax credits," the Obama campaign also redefines them away as a tax share of GDP. Presto, the federal tax burden looks much smaller than it really is."

Capital Gains are taxed as a form of Income Peter Principle Accounting Fraud?
Investors receive two types of income: ordinary income and capital gains. Ordinary income includes dividends and interest you receive. Aaand, You don't even differentiate between Short Term Capital Gains & Long Term Cap Gains.
Capital gains have an advantage over ordinary income: they're taxed at special rates. To qualify for these rates you must have long-term capital gains. Short-term capital gain is taxed at the same rates as ordinary income.

The Obama Peter Principle Accounting Moron Harp thinks Capital Gains aren't "Income".

Tell It To The IRS Asshat.

Q : Does a capital gain increase my income?

A: There's a vague notion out there that capital gains aren't income because they're taxed at their own special rates. Folks are hoping, perhaps, that capital gains won't count when they determine whether they can deduct an IRA contribution, or how much of their social security benefit is taxable, or how much of their exemptions are phased out, among other things. Unfortunately, capital gains are income. A special calculation provides the lower capital gains rate, but doesn't remove capital gains from your overall income (or adjusted gross income).

The Democrats set a long term trap beginning last year when they failled to pass a FY2011 budget knowing the Republicans would do well in the upcoming election. Patiently Democrats waited for the Republicans to submit their budget sprung their trap with military pay hanging in the balance and achieved a resounding victory over inept bunglers. The continued funding of Planned Parenthood, NPR, etc. never in doubt provided smoke and mirrors concealing the ultimate goal in this sequence raising the debt ceiling. A few months from now the same people in the same conservative blogs wailing over the GOP cave in over the debt ceiling further splitting the Tea Party from the Grand Old Party.

I believe it is not a defeatist attitude. It is the realization that most of the "leaders" in DC (both parties) are not serious about solving the problems of the debt and spending. Case in point, the debt grew $58 Billion while debating cuts of $38 Billion. There are a few (very few) adults that are serious about addressing the problems but they are swimming against a Tsunami. Does that mean we give up? No you fight harder but the country is populated by a majority that have jharp's mindset. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership . Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.”

JASmius | 4.10.11 @ 12:44PM

Since when is a win only a win when you shut out the other team and blow them out by six touchdowns? How is it not a good thing that the glass is two-thirds full? Since when is it tactically OR strategically smart to insist on throwing long bombs on every single down? Isn't it better to make sure we're moving the chains in the right direction? After all, we're still only in the first quarter, and there's a loooong way to go.

Also, how does it help the cause to kneecap the Speaker by accusing him of "selling out" social conservatives? How about we have realistic expectations about how much can be accomplished how soon and keep our eyes on the ultimate prize? How also about pointing out how seriously Barry and Harry caved, given all their recent chest-thumping bluster?

I'd argue Boehner did Gingrich one better by winning his government shutdown by pre-empting it. It was Newt's purist impatience that caused him to overplay his hand and lose the second shutdown confrontation back in '95. I was among those who thought we could win the shutdown PR battle, but if we could get most of what we wanted without a shutdown, why not?

You may not like Boehner pointing out that Republicans only control one half of one third of the federal government (actually it'd be more accurate to call it two halves of two thirds figuring the SCOTUS into the equation) but it's the current reality. Under those circumstances, pushing the fiscal bubble ~63% of the way towards their goal line and getting a couple of the "rider" items, and more importantly ***changing the paradigm*** from increases to actual cuts sure smells like a victory to me.

Besides - ***the game's not over***. It's only just begun. And there's something to be said for pacing ourselves.

He got Boehner to vote FOR the man-made global warming nonsense. To boot he got the elevate Boehner as the voice of the GOP, the Boehner he has in his hip pocket. And the Belt-way republicans cheer.

LarryK, it is NOT TRUE that Harp's mentality represents the majority in our country. Blue Wisconsin's stunning election results prove it.

We Conservatives have to do better at getting our message of independence, competence and integrity out there.

Hanover| 4.10.11 @ 12:57PM

Wayne, it was the first skirmish in a long war.
Don't retreat reload. Boehner and Co. are accountable to us and November, 2012 is coming up fast.

We need another massive Tea Party rally to show them we mean business.

Hanover| 4.10.11 @ 12:59PM

Sometimes I think Herr Harp is really a TAS writer hired to mix things up.

Diabolical but clever.

Tom| 4.10.11 @ 2:29PM

The BIG lesson this past week is that until Republicans are willing to shut down the government for an extended legnth of time, they will NEVER win a budget showdown with the Demoxrats.

And this would have been the prefect time to do it; the week that many Americans are dealing with their income taxes.

I ran screaming from the Democrat party in 2008, horrified at the corruption that had taken over. But if "social conservatives" don't get their noses out of my bedroom they'll drive me back into the fold.

Wayne | 4.10.11 @ 3:29PM

Hanover, I agree, we need a 2013 total victory to make real inroads, but Boehner missed an opportunity. Obama would have caved in a shutdown. When you see a path to victory, you must keep on the pressure. Now Obama goes back to being a "centrist", his goal. The GOP needs to put him on the liberal defensive. Since Boehner caved, I don't see him as leading any charge.

"I ran screaming from the Democrat party in 2008, horrified at the corruption that had taken over. But if "social conservatives" don't get their noses out of my bedroom they'll drive me back into the fold."

I felt the same way -- politically conservative and "socially liberal." As time has passed and the "this is what Amerika looks like" bunch have become more and more unhinged, I had to take a good hard look at my views and realize that I was a contradiction. I think you might want to reconsider where you really fall out. It is your decision either way, but you can't have it both ways. If you want a future for those who follow you (and I have no children so I have no dog in the long term hunt) that resembles what you have enjoyed, you must understand that the party is over. No one here is the least bit interested in what goes on in your bedroom. But. Birth control and other health care services are your responsibility. You pay yours and I will pay mine. And while we're here .... isn't 0bamacare supposed to be covering the issue of health care? Do we need to fight this straw man all of the time. And for the record? I am female.

Jo| 4.10.11 @ 4:17PM

You have no way of knowing if Obama would have caved. The Democrats were using the troops to blackmail the Repubs, and we couldn't let that happen.

We just have to keep up the pressure on our representatives. I have no intention of sitting down and shutting up.

martin j smith| 4.10.11 @ 4:33PM

May I make a modest proposal re: jharp ?
Do not respond to it. Thats all. Just do not respond, to it. Reasons ?--if you are a grown up you can figure it out.

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 4.10.11 @ 5:14PM

Creeper: I ran screaming from the Democrat party in 2008, horrified at the corruption,... But if "social conservatives" don't get out of my bedroom they'll drive me back.

Well you sure do turn on a dime, now don't you? Seriously, Conservatives actually "do not" give a shi*t what you do in your bedroom, be it getting an abortion on demand, doing drugs, or taking it up the *ss, We "don't care"!! You're the one who has to live with the results of what you do, we don't!! But what we do care about is, having to be responsible for paying for what you do behind your bedroom door. Pay for your own abortion, if you can live with the memory of your child fighting for its life. Take drugs, and ruin your life, lose your job, destroy your marriage, end up in jail, or end your life prematurely!! Have unprotected sex, straight or gay, and catch a disease and die slowly!! I don't care!! It's your choice!! Just don't make me responsible for your stupid mistakes!! So go ahead, run back to the fold of the Democratic Party, if you can live with them. You sound like you have no principles at all, if you're ready to turn and run, over funding for Planned Murderhood (55 Million served, and counting), or some other social issue. If really believe that Conservative actually care what you do behind closed doors, then go back to the Party of Death, we need People who have principles, not People who cave every time it rains, and doesn't go their way. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm being a little bit mean to your post, but then again, my A/C isn't working right now, and I'm cranky because I'm melting!! So suck it up Troop, drink water, and the sun will come out tomorrow, I promise!! But don't hold us hostage, or threaten us, that you'll bold over social issues, it makes you sound a lot like a Democrat!! And Democrats suck, in more ways than one!!

Jo| 4.10.11 @ 6:49PM

Take care, LLL. The desert sucks without A/C.

Occam's Tool| 4.11.11 @ 1:48AM

Ron Paul did not vote against the crap compromise. He simply DIDN'T VOTE on the most important legislation so far in this Congress.?!!!!!!!

Bachmann voted against it. Bachmann wants to run for President. The Tea Partiers have a NEW CHAMPION! Screw that traitor Ron Paul!

Occam's Tool| 4.11.11 @ 1:50AM

Martin,

you are absolutely correct. But I do love watching Clint and JHarp go at it. Kind of like watching Timmy and that other disabled kid have a fight on South Park, with JHarp as Timmy.

Tom| 4.11.11 @ 6:05AM

"You have no way of knowing if Obama would have caved. The Democrats were using the troops to blackmail the Repubs, and we couldn't let that happen."

Yes, and now that the Democrats know that this ploy worked once, they will be doing it again, and again, and again............

Kelly| 4.11.11 @ 2:19PM

No they can't--the Repubs took the issue off the table for the rest of the year. You need to pay attention.
