The introductory chapter of the Path to Prosperity answers my earlier question about defense cuts, reinvestment in the proper defense budget, and deficit reduction. Here it is: “Reflects $178 billion in savings identified by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, reinvesting $100 billion in higher military priorities and dedicating the rest to deficit reduction.”

Do ya think the Pentagon could cut programs for gay-boys and trans-gendered freaks?

Am I not allowed to say those words? Terrible, shocking! Why it's every cross-dresser's right to serve in the armed forces, we MUST accomodate them.

We must even allow illegal aliens (illegal amigos) full access to military service, why to restrict the US Armed Forces to say, uh, Americans, is RACIST, XENOPHOBIC, NATIVISM!

Just all part of the plan to make the US weaker - economically and militarily, so as not to "offend" other nations around the world.

Mr Antle,

You would've known that as soon as the budget proposal was published, if you would've paid attention to the reforms Secretary Gates outlined in January.

But you evidently haven't. Myself, I read his entire lengthy speech outlining these reforms on the same day it was posted (January 6th), and I've also read his entire opening statements to the Congressional Committees which supervise defense spending. In these statements, Sec. Gates said, in petty details, what exact reforms is he proposing and how much money are they designed to save.

Gates proposes to save $178 bn over the next 5 FYs. $100 bn of that is to be reinvested in the DOD, and $78 bn of that is to be cut from its future planned budget topline figures.

Not looking for an argument, or to criticize you Mr. Antle. Gold stars for military families have significant meaning.

Warrior, that's a good point. I've edited the comment to remove my poor word choice.

I believe that the strength of this country consists of much more than military strength. Thus I consider it a mistake to starve investments in scientific and medical research and in infrastructure while our military spending amounts to 43% of the world total (2009, SIPRI). Over 5 years, $78 billion isn't very impressive.
