No More ‘Redskins’

The school community of Red Lodge, Montana, has decided to drop the mascot name “Redskins” by a unanimous vote of the School District board of education, and this week the decision drew praise from three education specialists who are of American Indian descent.

Speaking to the student body this week, Mike Jetty of the state office of public education declared, “This is historic.” In an hour-long presentation, Jetty regaled students about cultural relations in Montana, asking if they had ever heard disparaging remarks made against women, teachers, Caucasians, or American Indians. “No matter who we are,” he said, “we are all working on these issues.”

Students in the audience seemed impressed. “I really liked that,” said one. “Helps reassure us we made the right decision,” said another, who added that many students had felt self-conscious about the “Redskin” mascot. Especially when the school opponent was a team from a reservation in the state. “Very hard to show school spirit,” said another.

The school is now about the process of selecting another name for a mascot, but the “Redskin” moniker is history in Red Lodge.

They should change the team name to the PC Pussies.

Et tu, Montana?

We are certainly turning into a nation of sissified little girlie-men. Wow.

Skippy| 3.29.11 @ 3:29PM

The Redskins get a pink slip.
A new name?
The Red Lodge Caucasians.

Jonah| 3.29.11 @ 3:37PM

C'mon, Skippy--that's racist!

Marxists hate tradition and rewrite history (that's how they take over cultures); that's why "Redskins" had to go.

Skippy| 3.29.11 @ 4:04PM

OK, how about the Red Lodge Recidivists?
The Montana Mudslingers?
The Great Northern Spotted Owls?
The Close-to-Canada Clitorectomists?
Felons, slanderers, environmentalists and Muslims should all then feel included.
Personally, UC Santa Cruz has already trumped us all with their official Banana Slugs mascot.
Slow, brainless, slimy and disgusting.
Everything UCSC stands for in one neat package!

Keep the Redskins. Fire Dan Snyder. And Albert Haynesworth. And ............................

Well it has been a few years now since the NCAA forced the University of Illinois to drop the Chief Illiniwek. The students and alumni always treated him with respect and reverence. They have never replaced him either. The Left has tried but the Chief will always live.

The once-small town of Frisco, Texas had "coons" for a nickname. As it grew into a suburb of Dallas, this became an issue.

Far up on the Navajo nation near four corners there is the town of Red Mesa named for a nearby mountain. The local high school in Red Mesa is the Red Mesa Redskins. Don't you all figure that if the Navajo don't have a problem the rest of use shouldn't either?

Paul McGrath| 3.29.11 @ 10:04PM

Yeah, well, maybe if the Navajos DID have a problem with it, common courtesy would suggest that the name be changed.

Times change. People are more sensitive now. Let it be; it ain't that big of a deal.

Why, those insensitive Navajos! Why can't they just be more sensitive? What are they, Savages? Makes my blood boil, them Navajos being so insensitive! People are more sensitive now! 'Cept for them insensitive Navajos!

When one looks to team mascots reinforcing stereotypes, it is hard to overlook Notre Dame's chosen team known as "the Fighting Irish". Unfortunately, every time a collection of my aggrieved ethnic fellow travelers open up the discussion of whether thus is offensive and should be changed, a brawl erupts, and the matter remains unresolved.

FastJohnny| 3.30.11 @ 9:14AM

This is ridiculous. The term 'redskins' is a term of pride and endearment in this case. The school team took that name to denote the fierce warrior culture that it sought to emulate in that particular competitive field, not to create disparaging feelings to any group. I am not sure why so many groups have become so pussified when it comes to this type of thing. I don't know about the rest of you, but when some foriegner, or even someone not from the northeast calls me a 'Yankee', I take that as a compliment. Call me a Yankee all you want, that is what I am and that is what I want people to know I am. The Brits came up with that term to make us feel bad and make fun of us over two hundred years ago and to me it is the ultimate compliment for what its denotation and conotation.

The Washington Wizards were once known as the "Bullets".The name was discontinued because some no "dogooders" claimed it promoted violence. They were right! There has not been one shooting in D.C. or any other major city within 100 miles since the name change. Now we are having problems with decisions and policies enacted by our "wizards"in D.C.Could someone please come up with a new name.?It is so important and would make us all feel so much better.

Big Jim| 3.30.11 @ 10:36AM

I don't think any school team picks a name because it's insulting. Banana Slugs excluded, teams generally want a name that shows fighting spirit, some local history or both. This whole controversy over Indian names is just stupid. GO IRSH! slip and slide slugs?

bobmontgomery| 3.30.11 @ 11:05AM

Ever wonder why 'Black' is beautiful, but 'Red' is just downright 'insensitive'?
