Sheriff Sarkozy

John Guardiano praises French President Nicolas Sarkozy as “the new sheriff in town” with regard to initiating military action in Libya. I think Guardiano is correct in his assessment because without Sarkozy I still think there would be much dithering.

Guardiano notes that both Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron got spooked with what was happening on the ground in Libya given that Libya “is in their backyard.” He also notes that it is not coincidental that both men are conservatives. But I would point out that Libya is every bit as much in Germany’s backyard and that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is surely as conservative as either Sarkozy or Cameron. Yet Germany opposed the no-fly zone from the outset and abstained during the Security Council vote.

As for the Brits, I think they would have been on board with this action regardless of whether a Conservative or a Labour government was in power.

But could you imagine Jacques Chirac (or for that matter his old Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin) leading a military campaign in Libya much less supporting one? Sarkozy and Chirac have both led the Union for a Popular Movement but never has one political party produced two more diametrically opposed leaders.

Indeed, who could have imagined France would produce a President more pro-American than our own?

So, when someone yells out, "Assume the position!", the French (and British) will stand up and fight, and Barack Obama will bend over and bow real, real, real low!?!?!?!

"But could you imagine Jacques Chirac (or for that matter his old Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin) leading a military campaign in Libya much less supporting one?"

Maybe so and maybe not.

And could you imagine a rag tag third world country being invaded by the most powerful and greatest country on the earth.

And after 8 years and $3 trillion dollars we still can't manage to extricate ourselves. And Americans are still dying and American taxpayers are still paying the bill.

Maybe we should invade Libya. What do you think comrades.

WMD's. Check.
Dictator slaughtering his own. Check.
Terrorism sponsor. Check.

How about it teabaggers?

JimH| 3.21.11 @ 8:29AM

If you are going to be insulting, at least direct it at the right people. It was primarily those labeled as neocons who pushed for intervention and occupation. Many of the Teapartiers, while patriotic and strongly pro defense were opposed to going into Iraq and many others are dubious of our continued presence in Afghanistan. While they are all supportive of the troops more than a few question the current mission.

JmsA| 3.21.11 @ 1:56PM

Dont' waste your time, JimH; he's stupid. He gets his news, if one call actually call it such, from the nytimes rag, NPR, etc. He's also angry because his hero, the exalted One, is no longer the anti-Bush. What a pity.

Occam's Tool| 3.21.11 @ 10:37AM

No current WMDs. Check. Not the major terrorism sponsor (that would be Iran, who you DON'T want to attack). Check. Opponents also scumbag terrorist supporters. Check.

You know, when the biggest interventionalist on this site (I think Clint would agree) thinks that intervention is not such a good thing....

JmsA| 3.21.11 @ 2:03PM

No, we should bomb the crap out Qaddafi's forces and let them sort it out then. Now, was that so difficult to understand? I know is hard for you; after all, you're a rag (nytimes) reader. In other words, crap in, crap out.

JmsA| 3.21.11 @ 2:10PM

Hey, Jharp, your proctologist called; he found your head.

Pete| 3.20.11 @ 10:28PM

Obama the socialist chickenhawk. Kind of has a ring to it, eh?

JmsA| 3.21.11 @ 1:57PM

Yes, it does, Pete.

The One Who Runs Like a Duck| 3.20.11 @ 11:40PM

We are in Rio, Jharp. Please stop with your homosexual fantasies. I am sorry your daddy didn't show you any love. That doesn't mean that you have to use yourself as an example of a mentally unbalanced progressive. You are really exposing us to all kinds of ridicule. Keep focused on Haliburton, rendition, Gitmo, the Patriot Act, wind farms and the Chevy Volt. This is where we are making a difference. The golf courses are great in Brazil. I like the whole place except for all the protesters who apparently think I am some kind of war monger. High speed rail to Libya, baby.

jharp| 3.20.11 @ 11:50PM

"Please stop with your homosexual fantasies."

It always gets to something homosexual with you teabaggers.

Hmmmm. Why is that? It makes a person wonder.

And whatever happened to the jism freak tonypal? He must be getting all he can handle.

God you people are stupid.

Cousin Arlo Harp| 3.21.11 @ 5:27AM

Don't let Cousin Junior fool ya.

Around these parts, He's known as The Low Hangin' Fruit Man.

Don't Touch My Junk Junior.

Allah, Junior's One Worldclass Imbecile.

Occam's Tool| 3.21.11 @ 10:38AM

I'm sorry, JHarp, what does "teabagging " mean? Pot.Kettle.Black.

jharp| 3.21.11 @ 1:17PM

T.E.A. Taxed. Enough. Already. After Obama cut taxes for 95% of us. Which makes no sense.

They coined themselves teabaggers when some moron wore a hat with teabags hanging on it at one of their I hate Obama festivals of ignorance.

Then Griff Jenkins on Fox News picked it up and the rest is history.

And it is hilarious.

The One Who Runs Like a Duck| 3.21.11 @ 4:09PM

We are still in Rio, Jharp. Daddy didn't love you and you will have to move on. All this focus on the seedy side of your life style is not helping the cause. It is sad that you think you're clever. Remember, keep the focus on rendition, Gitmo, military tribunals, wind farms, the Chevy Volt and high speed rail. Golf in Brazil is great. It is only for rich people like me, baby.

NoLib| 3.21.11 @ 6:07PM

harp lies again: It was the CNN smirky twerp, Anderson Cooper, who got his pansy butt beat in Egypt who put 'teabagger' on the map. Like harp, I'm sure teabagging is a specialty of Anderson's.

Mike W| 3.21.11 @ 10:54AM

"God you people are stupid".

Wow. You really told em' off with that one. Clever and original.

Jonah| 3.21.11 @ 2:16AM

Irrelevant.

pete2| 3.21.11 @ 8:42AM

I don't know who jharp is but that person should seek professional help fast. I, for one, do not support this intervention in Libya. The president has initiated miliatry action on a sovereign nation without an Act of War being declared by Congress. The UN has meddled into what is essentially a civil war taking sides. That is wrong. I'm a tea party supporter and a staunch pro- defense conservative.Just how many wars can we support at any given time and why are we acting like the world's policeman again? Got enough problems at home without getting involved in any overseas.

NoLib| 3.21.11 @ 6:09PM

harp did seek help; the numerous shock therapy treatments didn't work.

Rich Rostrom| 3.21.11 @ 8:26PM

France has a history of relatively recent military interventions in various places, so sticking it to Qaddafi is not a big stretch for them.

But Germany, like Japan, has lot of bad associations with going to war. It will be a while yet before Germany is ready for military action again. Maybe when the last survivors of World War II have all passed on... and that won't be for at least another 30 years. (Note that there are WW I veterans still alive. There are a lot of people who remember WW II who were too young to fight, but not too young to suffer.)
