The Spectacle Blog

One of the more sadly amusing spectacles of the American-European-Arab dance over Libya is the complete and utter role-reversal that has taken place. Indeed, the Europeans are leading; the Americans are following; and the Arabs are applauding — publicly!

French jets are the ones now spearheading the attack on Gaddafi’s forces in Libya. American pilots, meanwhile (despite some late-breaking exceptions) mostly are sitting on their hands. As GOP strategist Patrick Ruffini quipped on Twitter, “In times like these, we look to France for leadership.”

Whoa! What happened?

Well, despite everything that you heard when George W. Bush was president, the fact is that the “international community” does, indeed, look to the United States for leadership. And when such leadership is lacking, or not forthcoming, the “international community” starts to worry.

This seems to be what has happened re Libya.

On March 3, Obama said that Gaddafi “needs to step down from power and leave.” He then did… nothing. Libya, apparently, was not “our problem.”

Gaddafi’s mercenary army then proceeded to route the rebel forces, and the Arab League got worried. Sane and moderate Arab leaders, after all, have no use for Gaddafi, whom they not-so-secretly loathe and fear.

So the Arab League did something that I’m not sure it has ever done: It urged the United Nations to take military action against a fellow Arab country. It voted for U.N. enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya.

Meanwhile, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron (both not coincidentally, political conservatives) got spooked. Libya, after all, is in their backyard. And Gaddafi, albeit neutered in recent years, has been an historic and long-time terrorist sponsor.

Ultimately, then, everyone was urging the United States to act and to lead. And so, as I reported here at the American Spectator, Obama reluctantly agreed to support a no-fly zone — so long, it seems, as the French and the British spearheaded the operation.

Do our allies miss George W. Bush’s “cowboy diplomacy”? They’d never admit it (at least not publicly), but I rather think that’s the case. After all, as much as the Europeans and the Arabs love to whine about us, the truth is they need us — and they know it.

Indeed, as a frustrated Simon Tisdall wrote last week in the English newspaper, The Guardian: “No one wants to act without the U.S… The EU’s pretensions to act as an independent global power once again [have been] cruelly exposed.”

Tisdall may have spoken too soon. French jets, after all, are now at the tip of the spear in Libya; and America, for the most part, has been put to sea — literally. It seems that all it took to unify Europe and to stiffen the European spine was a weak and dithering American president. And if that’s not progress, I don’t know what is.

Yeah, wonder when the French jets will do their usual thing, jettison their armaments and hightail it back to Paris, as the French army did when Hitler/Nazies were approaching their country at the start of WWII? As said, French rifles always POINT BACKWARDS, and their flags are always WHITE IN COLOR. As to the UN and its voting for an enforcement of a no-fly zone, maybe the UN army or air force should thereafter enforce same, huh [guess if my house is being burglarized, I should run next door and demand that my neighbor put a stop to same]!!!!!!!!

johnny| 3.20.11 @ 11:47AM

french surrender jokes in 2011? how painfully original..........

you got any other chestnuts of wisdom up your sleeve oldfart?

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 1:22PM

Nope, except for the one about WHEN THE FRENCH GENERALS SCREAM ''''CHARGE''''', THEIR TROOPS .......RUN BACKWARDS!!!!!!

Paul| 3.20.11 @ 3:14PM

Oldefarte , a kind of guy who believe that Elvis still alive ! LOL
The fact is that French are fighting Talibans in Afganistan, pirates in the Red Sea, maintaining peace in Ivory Coast, standing between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon and now, bombing Gaddafi. Go on with your French Bashing jocks private Jocker !

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 4:47PM

Nah, Elvis is dead, just as many Europeans were after France threw their arms up in surrender to Hitler/Nazis. If they had done their duty at that time, not only would many Europeans survived but also thousands of American G.I.'s would not have had to be slaughtered at Normandy. Go salute DeGaulle somewhere else, okay?????????

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 4:48PM

PS, try developing a sense of humor [and maybe of history also]!!!!!!!

Occam's Tool| 3.21.11 @ 10:27AM

And the reason they want to stand BETWEEN Israel and a scumbag terrorist organization is?

Ahhh, the French, the French. So many jokes, so much perfidy, so little time.

l5j6| 3.20.11 @ 11:47AM

I doubt it’ll be a big, drawn-out thing but overall I’d say we should of stayed out of the Libya thing. If muslims are killing muslims, I say, that’s a good thing. I mostly want them to be kept from immigrating to our country. Period.

John Carnal| 3.21.11 @ 1:56AM

Amen brother. We need to be weeding out the ones that are already here until they come clean about supporting their terrorist brothers.

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 3.20.11 @ 12:00PM

Ah come on now, let the French play Quarterback for a change, or at least for a couple of downs!! They haven't completed a pass in a real game since Napoleon was leading their team at Waterloo, and we all remember how that one turned out. Not good!! But what's the chance of that happening again?

Paul| 3.20.11 @ 3:17PM

What about Verdun 1916 ? Oh, I see...you have not a clue about, sorry..

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 3.20.11 @ 4:08PM

Verdun was a stalemate at best Paul!! And anyway, that battle was completely fought inside France, and more French died in that battle than Germans did. So some Victory!! Oh yeah, and Verdun led directly to France adopting the idea of the Maginot Line in World War-II, so in a way Verdun led to a delayed "complete defeat" a few decades later on. So they really learned a great lesson from that battle, now didn't they?

What are you Paul, are you French? Don't be so touchy, at least you "had" an Empire at some point in your Country's history!! Oh yeah, and Paul, don't be so condescending, it makes you sound like a Liberal Douche. "Oh, I see.. you have not a clue about Verdun?" Where's my cheese? Why must I talk to someone who does not know about Verdun? Viva la France!! Lighten up Paul!! I'm sure I know something that you don't have a clue about either, so effinwhat?

Sean| 3.20.11 @ 4:29PM

The Maginot Line led to defeat in WWII? The German had to go around it so it really served its purpose. Maybe if it was extended all the way to the sea it would have been even better.

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 6:19PM

Sean, the Maginot line served only to force the Germans to take the easy way around which the French expected and weren't prepared for. Of that which they built, it bankrupted them and took away from the mobile and air forces it they needed when the Germans took the easy way around. Had the French completed the line to the sea as you suggest the Germans would have just concentrated on one section and walked to Paris after that. That's the nature of fixed defenses. If you can't cover them with fire power they become a liability when breeched. The Germans had gross superiority in the air even against the British and French combined. The Maginot line wasn’t going to save them against concentrated tactical air power.

Sean| 3.20.11 @ 9:31PM

Anything becomes a liability when breeched. Noone is saying Germany wouldn't have taken France, but to blame the defeat on the Maginot line is asinine. The Germans went around it because it would have been a major pain to breech.

Lullabys, Legends and Lies| 3.20.11 @ 9:53PM

Sean: Actually, you can directly blame the Maginot line for France's defeat in WW-II, because that's the exact lesson the French learned during WW-I at Verdun. That a well fortified position could hold off the Germans, which is exactly why they wasted all their resources building it after the Great War, but had absolutely no back up plan, or the clarity to see that the Germans could just go around the damn thing, like they did in the end. So Asinine, it didn't serve its purpose as you say it did, it was a complete and total failure. The French would've done better just meeting the Germans out on an open battlefield, because six weeks later, Hitler was at the Eiffel Tower, because the Maginot line was retarded, just like you for defending it.

Sean| 3.21.11 @ 1:03AM

The plan was to make the German go around it and it worked just like intended. Except the Germans had created a new form of warfare that the French were not able to handle when they did so. So yeah you pretty much know jack about history.

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 5:22PM

I'll have you know that Verdun 1916 IS A VERY GOOD VINTAGE!!!!!!!!!

Occam's Tool| 3.21.11 @ 10:28AM

The US Won That War For Them (WWI). Refer to John Mosier.

Richard Baker| 3.20.11 @ 12:13PM

France a world power? Get the US military ready to save their Gallic butts once again. All this because they lost the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

Paul| 3.20.11 @ 3:21PM

WW1: The French fought 4 years and lost 1500000 soldiers.
The Us fought only the last year ( when all was over) and lost 120 000 boys.
No comment o at least one: American have BIG MOUTH !

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 4:16PM

Comrade Paul, all this proves is we learned some lessons from our own civil war between 1861-65 while the French learned nothing with their little dust up with the Germans in 1870. I would remind you that Germany was completely surrounded in WWI and fought the British, French, Russians and others but these nations could not prevail over Germany as it existed then. Our little contribution in WW1 was completely on par with Frances’ contribution during our Revolution. How many years had we been fighting the Brits and waiting on the French to show up? France’s performance in WWII was at the very least shameful and incompetent even by French standards. Then there is the Vichy thing….. and their performance in Vietnam.

You really don't want to get into a pissing contest here about French military prowess since 1815. You will lose the argument.

Occam's Tool| 3.21.11 @ 10:34AM

Yes, and our intervention caused the Germans to sue for an armistice. WWII, Vietnam, Cold War---O, Paul whither art thou?

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 12:16PM

I’m afraid the story line is a little different than presented here. Yes, the Euros need us, no doubt.

It is our Tomahawks launched from our ships that will take out the most dangerous fixed air defenses. It is our tanker fleet that will support the Euro fighters else they could not conduct any missions over Libya at all. It will be our intelligence that provides the Euros with the targeting information. The combined amphibious fleet of the Euros could not probably put a combat brigade ashore. It will probably be our amphibious capability that provides the bulk of the lift for their troops else you might not see too many boots on the ground very quickly. When all is said and done the defensive nature of the Euro military will be front and center and without our capability they wouldn’t have the capability to act at all. France a world power, really…. Not since June 16th 1815.

A coalition of forces may eventually occupy Libya but the heavy lifting will be performed by the only nation that has the capability to do this. US. The French Army in exile paraded into Paris in 1944 like it was had been the center piece of the invasion effort and was responsible for the liberation of France….. it wasn’t even a meaningful part of the overall effort.

John Guardiano | 3.20.11 @ 12:29PM

Thom,
Thanks for your thoughtful note. Great points, well taken.

Of course, my post is more than a little tongue-in-cheek and designed to poke fun at Obama's effort to downplay American involvement in Operation Odyssey Dawn.

Still, there's no denying, I think, that the West has intervened militarily in Libya not because of any American initiative, but rather because of the dogged determination of the French and the British, aided and supported by the Arab League.

Regards,
John

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 4:41PM

John, without taking out the fixed air defenses and a like the non US aircraft would operate at great risk over Libyan air space. Euros don't have the standoff strike capability we have thus they would have to use manned missions with some considerable risk involved. Contrary to Comrade Paul's belief France does not have the tankers required to support such a mission in bulk either thus like our recent involvement in the Balkans we had to call up 30,000 reservists to fly and support all the tankers required to support that 79 day bombing campaign for the American Luftwaffe under Nato colors. My single salient point is the Euro defense establishment is totally centered on defense of Europe and has next to nothing in the way of power projection outside of the air range of is short ranged fighter bombers (with the exception of the Tornados types). It does not matter what the PM of Britain and France want to do if they don’t have the capability. They’ve had a month to put this thing together. We could have done it in a week thus it didn’t happen until we provided Euros what they don’t have. They get the parade into Paris, we get the satisfaction of knowing we did the heavy lifting again.

Paul| 3.20.11 @ 3:25PM

I am afraid you dont know about french military ( French Foreign Legion maybee), The French have they own tankers, remember the ones the Pentagon choose to purchase ?

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 4:02PM

Comrade Paul, we have over 500 tankers in service. How many KC-30s do the French have flying?

Thom| 3.20.11 @ 4:26PM

I know a great deal about the French Military and the FFL. Speak to us about the great miltary battles the French military fought in Gulf War 1 way out there on the left flank screening the American forces from those unknown and hidden forces of Saddam?

Since it is next to impossible to get the regular French Military to operate outside of France proper and that is the expressed purpose of the FFL then what we can expect from France in Libya is nothing but the FFL forces and they are a bit light on equipment for serious one on one force. I'm aware of the quality of the FFL but they are light forces. If the majority of the tribes in Libya do support MG then this could prove a problem.

But we are not paying for the French's expenses, the subject of this post, you effing dumbsh*t.

Could it be that Qaddafi is perceived as vulnerable so the IC is just making the most of an opportunity?

jharp| 3.20.11 @ 1:18PM

I thought the same thing listening to Deface The Nation this morning.
Not the stupid thing, the Hussein/GQKadaffy similarity thing.
It seems the pseudo-POTUS is using GWB's exact arguments to justify his attacks on Libya. Izzat all you got Barry-o barry-o baby?
I was spending yesterday celebrating the 8th anniv. of the Iraq liberation when I saw Prince Barely did a Boy Clinton and expended a lot of expensive ordnance in order to Butch Up to...someone.
The irony was hilarious.

Yeah, Barry is pulling a Bush. Right.

Just like Bush.

No ground troops in Libya just like Iraq.

God you people are stupid.

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 5:17PM

Want differences? Did Gadaffi INVADE ANOTHER COUNTRY with his Libyian army, or are they suspected of manufacturing/stockpiling WMD, moron? In retrospect, you're correct, there's really little difference. In both cases, we should have simply Hiroshima'ed both countries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jharp| 3.20.11 @ 7:35PM

"In both cases, we should have simply Hiroshima'ed both countries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And all along you stupid rednecks just wanted to kill people. Go figure.

Why so hostile? First of all, Iraq had violated multiple UN resolutions and while it doesn't fit your rant, Saddam did possess WMD's and had in fact used them on his own people in the past. If it also helps you out, I believe that is all bullshit because I believe the invasion of Iraq was a mistake. Maybe more to the point is that you had a vote in the congress and senate authorizing the use of military force in Iraq. Unless I missed it, please show me where the CIC has authorization to use military force against Libya. The costs are irrelevant at this point as Bush never put the costs into any budget and Obama and the democrat led congress last year failed to produce a budget. The only thing that is being proven here is that both parties are out of control and should never be trusted.

Oldefarte| 3.20.11 @ 5:04PM

These boys are sacrificing for their President and won't be forgotten. Fox News has been very good in their coverage. They have shown all the clips of me going over my picks on ESPN. This is a big moment for the country. Kansas must win this war. By the way it is good to see that you can turn on a dime when it comes to war mongering. Jonah, I concede your point that you're making. However, from what I see happening in the Middle East and the a few years I spent there. Knowing the Arab culture. I truly believe the younger generation. Now exposed to worldwide communicative technology. And those able to think out-of-the-box. in regards to there medieval fundamental past, are now seeking the modern world and its reality. By that, I am not saying to not believe in theology nor God. I guess I can sum it up by saying this, there is the past, there is the present, there is a future. And the best present GOD is ever given us, is the PRESENT .. That is our Reality. We need to support aggressively the ideology of freedom for every individua.,May one lighted candle, light many candles in the darkness of evil. Again the Jonah, you make a good point. But I believe if we don't sit on our hands, nor compromise with evil and the self interests of dictators. Truth shall prevail. We cannot be Spectators to what's happening in the world nor be indifferent because of our self-seeking interests. Responsibility and loyalty can be found in all creatures. If you get a chance look at that video recently posted of those two dogs and the loyalty to each other after the Japanese earthquake . Some say," JUST,DOGS"., Have you ever heard the saying," you treat me like a dog". We should be so lucky, for what I saw on that video was compassion, feeling, loyalty of one creature to another. And it is too far lacking in what we call the humanity. Jonah, let's hope for the best, GOD bless, by the way, whatever God We believe in , whatever theology? What' is important,Is that we believe, divine or not, other than self .pastor , Mordecai

I don't think the young people of the Middle East will be in control the final outcome, unfortunately.

Go ahead and let the French lead. They wanted this, let them risk their blood.

Ron Paul is against US intervention in Libya. See his website before insulting me. Dr. Paul may have a point on this one.
