Jennifer Rubin alerts me to these disturbing comments Sen. Jim DeMint made to the Hill in defense of RomneyCare:
“One of the reasons I endorsed Romney [in 2008] is his attempts to make private health insurance available at affordable prices,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.), a GOP kingmaker.
DeMint blames Democrats in the Massachusetts State Legislature for adding many of the features to Romney’s plan that many on the right decry.
“It just depends on how he plays it. For me, I think he started with some good ideas that were essentially hijacked by the Democrat Legislature,” DeMint said.
To start with, blaming everything on the Democratic legislature is simply not an accurate account of what happened. Romney helped craft the basic architecture of the health care plan, and pursued it even though he knew that he was working with an overwhelming Democratic legislature who he knew would override his symbolic line-item vetoes of parts of his bill. He signed the bill with Ted Kennedy at his side, and did so knowing he wasn’t seeking reelection and that it would almost certainly fall on a Democratic governor to implement it. After signing it, Romney did a victory lap — boasting of his accomplishment in a Wall Street Journal op-ed entitled, “Health Care for Everyone? We Found a Way.” He defended it throughout his last run for president. In a 2007 interview with Fox during his campaign, he said, “We found a way to get everybody in our state, Massachusetts, insured. I like the plan. I think it’s one of the best things we did in my administration.” He’s defended the individual mandate for years on conservative grounds, using the “responsibility” argument that was adopted by Democrats. He even declared in one GOP debate “I like mandates.” So it is simply ignorant to portray Romney as an innocent bystander and blame everything on Democrats.
But beyond being ignorant, DeMint’s comments are dangerous. I’ve long argued that the Massachusetts health care plan is not only toxic to Mitt Romney’s presidential candidacy, but it could prove toxic to the entire Republican Party. If Romney is excused for crafting and signing the Massachusetts health care plan, it significantly undermines the case against ObamaCare and weakens the effort to repeal it. The reason is that opposition to ObamaCare will start to look increasingly political and less about principle. It’s true that a state mandate doesn’t raise the same Constitutional questions as the federal mandate, but it still is government forcing an individual to purchase a product. These comments are especially dangerous coming from DeMint, who is known as a leading conservative and ObamaCare opponent. Let’s hope it’s an isolated incident and not part of a broader trend.
UPDATE: Over at the Hill, a source close to DeMint is pushing back against the way his comments have been interpreted. “It’s obvious Jim was just trying to be nice to the guy he backed over McCain, as many conservatives did in 2008,” the source said, according to the Hill. “But he would never consider backing Romney again unless he admits that his Massachusetts health care plan was a colossal mistake.”
The Hill also prints DeMint’s full comments, which contain more qualifications for his defense of Romney’s involvement in the health care law:
One of the reasons I endorsed Romney is his attempts to make private health insurance available at affordable prices. He set the goal that all folks in Massachusetts would have affordable health insurance. By the time it got through the Democratic state legislature, it had all these mandates on it, requirements about what kind of policies would be bought — the same thing that happened up here — instead of getting people insured, it was a government takeover. So I applaud the goal — my goal is to have every American with a private health insurance plan that they can keep throughout their lives. And so, I still admire him for taking on the task, but I think it’s important to recognize that that’s not where we want our healthcare to go. States can compete with different plans, but we shouldn’t have anything like what they did in Massachusetts at the federal level.

I don't like it either, but I also have to prepare for the possibility Romney actually is the nominee. I have more faith in DeMint, but he is not running. So I can see him trying to give Romney some cover.
What is more important is that Romney actually gets the mood of the country. Because if he doesn't watch a guy like Trump step in.

And I have to say this about Donald Trump: I am better qualified to be president than he is. And the chances are greater that I'll run.
Trump is a blowhard who used his daddy's assets and substantial leverage to create many offers NYC couldn't refuse; he parlayed a bizarre and craven hunger for publicity with sweetheart deals and a great deal of luck into an empire that I'm willing to bet is owned not by Trump but by an assortment of banks.
He is not a genius, he is not a brilliant fiscal manager, he is not a principled human being and he is not even a conservative in any way, shape, manner or form.
What he IS is an opportunist. He is the PT Barnum of real estate, a showman whose image is 75% bluster and 25% equity.
Trump knows all of this speculation about his putative run is free publicity. That is the extent of his seriousness. And even if he were to run, he would wear very, very thin very, very quickly.
If you think Fred Thompson's viability as a candidate evaporated with lightning speed - essentially within a single news cycle - that's nothing compared Trump's; he'd be spit on a hot griddle.
And if by some hiccup in the universe he DID run, and DID win, we'd be stuck with an arrogant, narcissistic, know-nothing incompetent who is painfully out of his depth. Gee, that sounds familiar. . .
I am almost despondent at the potential GOP field as it is currently configured. With one or two fleeting exceptions, the whole damned feckless, flaccid, go-along-to-get-along Republican party can go to hell as far as I'm concerned.
Thank god the women in our party have some cajones at least.
But thanks to the mainstream media - whose demise has been greatly exaggerated by wishful conservatives - conservatism is always, always, always on the defensive, and even our most stalwart standard-bearers too often wilt under the withering barrage of fire from the vast arsenal that is our popular culture.
I mean, just look at Boehner and his merry band of enablers - there may never be a better time to act decisively than now. And what do we get? Go along to get along.

If your comments were to be taken seriously you'd back up two steps and acknowledge that the reason health care got expensive in the first place was government interference in the health care market, dating back to WWII.
I'm not sure what the future will bring but both parties currently endorse some sort of health care law.
A poll of Massachusetts residents finds out that the majority of residents (84%) actually like the plan. Whether they like it 5 years from now is another story which hasn't yet been written.
Obamacare is somewhat different in that it's a federal issue. If your state wants you to buy health care that's one thing, but it goes beyond the power of the federal government to order citizens to buy something.
As far your observations they are off the mark.
I'm not defending Romney, DeMint or government health care. The fact is both parties have gone about laying this treacherous trap for decades.

Sen. Jim DeMint has been a strong backer of Romney and was one of Romneys lead men in South Carolina when Romney ran in 2008 - DeMint never waiver with Mitt.
DeMint may be holding out Romney will choose him as a V.P. if Romney should get the GOP nod, thinking it will help Romney in the South.
The shocking thing was when DeMint aligned with the Tea Party movement, but now that people are being reminded Koch is supporting Romney with country club set fundraisers - Koch also backs the Tea Party -- this may all be background political maneuvering.
People who where taken aside on Kochs admiration of Romney should not have been. Both have a common interest --- Koch is heavy into Russian crude oil, and the Romneys have been involved in a Russian owned company that has on the board the fromer 2Nd deputy of director of Gazprom - as well as Oleg Lobov, former Russian Security and also tied to the Serin Attack in Japan .Lobov was a backer of Aum, giving Aum money, attack helicopters, small arms and Ebola Virus.

Philip's assessment is entirely accurate, and Romney would no doubt be BBQ'd by Democrats against Obama in 2012 accordingly over same. The problems with health insurance are universal in the government has no business being involved in same, be it a state or federal government. Health insurance can be fixed/remedied by exclusion of lawsuits, deleting the state boundaries, and computerization [and costs reductions] of same, period. Health insurance has one of the lowest profit margins of any insurance vehicle [7-9%], but governments' motives are to capture same for its own funding purposes [in addition to providing another form of governmental welfare to its indigent constituents]. Romney and his attachment to governmental health insurance will surely bring about a Republican defeat by Obama/Democrats in 2012!!!!!!

I think Clint is a plant for purposes of driving a wedge on national security issues and acceptance of Jews into the R-tent (who, as a a large-voting demographic critical in swing states like Florida, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, [maybe even New Jersey!] are increasingly supporting R candidates with votes, words (and cash), although turning slowly.
What's the best way to keep them in the D tent? Fake posters like Clint running off at the mouth on conservative forums, to remind Jews of the days when Pat Buchanan (of the Hitler apologetics) and David Duke were legitimate, even mainstream, parts of the R party.
