Japanese Horror

Steve Harman, a great Voice of America reporter who covers Korea and Japan, Tweets this as the areas around several Japanese nuclear reactors are being evacuated:

Japan's worst-ever quake in modern times generated tsunami that likely killed thousands. Now also a potential radiation disaster.

The environmentalist instinct to look for a way to blame humans for this (which Chris mocks below) strikes me as a modern secular equivalent to ancient pagan appeals to Earth-gods. It's hard to accept the harsh reality that nature can be as cruelly indifferent to humanity as it sometimes is.

But if we're powerless to stop tsunamis, we can still mitigate suffering. Here are some ways to help the victims of the disaster.

---Waiting for who's first to bring in
'Global Warming'.

MEANWHILE, informed speculation seems
to settle on an unusually large moon.

UNMENTIONED are the KNOWN capabilities
of HAARP technology, and those Cadmium,
Barrium and Aluminum Oxide CHEM-trails.

UNMENTIONED ALSO, the last event Tsunamia a few years ago in Thailand and Indonesia which occurred
on Dec 26th ----MAO TSE TUNG's Birthday.

I think it is time for a citizens controlled news media network now that we have the technology to bypass the bastard elites that control all our news. Once again, we can not get any information on what is going in Japan. Is the US Navy assisting the Japanese with the five reactors and moving coollant to these sites or not? One set of jackasses is predicting Chernobyl and the other jack asses say no sweat, do not worry about..three mile island at most.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 6:11AM

I was at a friend's home last evening who for some reason I cannot begin to imagine, gets her "news" from CNN. The "reporter" was caterwauling in sensationally poetic terms as they were playing tape from the disaster site. Could he not see that the pictures spoke for themselves and made his tiny little speaking irrelevant? Kind of like what is coming out of DC ....

JimH| 3.12.11 @ 7:28AM

Unlike former president Jimmuh I don't claim to know much about nuclear power. But I wonder if any readers have any knowledge about the design of the Japanese reactors. It seems very odd that in a place of known high seismic activity, that they have a system which requires power to keep it cool and stable rather than having the default configuration of off with the rods removed and needing power to keep it running.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 6:13AM

They had a default system powered by diesel engines which were covered up by water from the resulting tsunami and thereby rendered useless. Who would have thought?

JimH| 3.13.11 @ 8:35AM

Yeah, I saw that. What I was trying to say was: Is it not possible to have a design where in the absence of power, the reactor shuts down. I guess what I mean is that it should take power to keep the rods in, Not to pull them out.

JimH| 3.13.11 @ 8:54AM

For anyone interested, there is some good information on this situation at http://www.jerrypournelle.com Particularly Saturday's view and mail.

Nippon Efficiency| 3.12.11 @ 8:57AM

So much for Japanese efficiency, bombing Pearl Harbor with US carriers not in port and building reactors with non-natural circulation characteristics to remove decay heat. Building reactors dependent on pumping in H2O as emergency coolant in the ring of fire is the height of stupidity and a colossal threat as the world can see.

simon templar| 3.12.11 @ 1:41PM

The Japanese tend to have very high standards regarding their engineering as well as are known for their organizational ability. Before we jump to conclusions and start the blame game, we might want to take a breath and think a little about how we can help these people through this nightmare.

Timothy Birdnow| 3.12.11 @ 9:01AM

Good point, John!

I suspect this suits some of the more rabid environmentalists just fine. President Obama banned drilling in the Gulf of Mexico for oil based on the Horizon spill. A meltdown would likely be justification for stopping any new nuclear reactors from being built.

The Chinese are working on pebble-bed reactors that can't melt down, but that won't stop the Gang Green from banned nuclear power here. If efforts were made to develop safer reactors in the U.S. it seems likely that Japan wouldn't be facing this catastrophe now; the state of the art would be better worldwide.

simon templar| 3.13.11 @ 1:47AM

Thousand dollar bet that Hillary f*cked up rescue and aid attempts to bring coolant to the nuclear plant sites...any takers? Did you notice not a single shred of news about our efforts to assist in any manner or shape civilian, militarily, or otherwise. It bit odd, ya THINK?

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 6:15AM

Has there been a coup? Is she now president?

Dixie Pixie| 3.13.11 @ 2:31PM

Greetings BeeBop

Why are you under the impression we have a 44th President in Obama.
Obama says one thing and his administration does another.
His foreign policies are notorious for its vacuous rhetoric and complete abstinence of action.
His domestic policy statements are notorious for a schizophrenic quality unrelated to his administrations actions.

It is like Obama is not running his administration and does not know it or care.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 8:46PM

While I agree, I think that at least here we should be holding the occupant of the oval office to some level of accountability.

simon templar| 3.13.11 @ 2:45PM

I say Hillary as she head of State Department which usually deals with matters like these. She also was the one who announced that she was leading an effort to get our Navy ships there to assist with the nuke plants.

NoLib| 3.13.11 @ 5:26PM

Something squirrely happened there, I agree. First Hillary made a big public statement about us delivering reactor coolant, and almost immediately it was retracted. What gives? I think the old battle-axe screwed up, too.

What a putz.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 8:47PM

Do I misunderstand the responsibilities of State versus, say, the joint chief, or defense, or? Thank God Big Sis doesn't have this in her portfolio!

Occam's Tool| 5.4.11 @ 7:39PM

I agree with your posts here.

simon templar| 3.13.11 @ 1:59AM

Well, where's the liberal media, the Hollywood movie stars, the 24 hour coverage? Seems you need to come from a country that hates America to get any attention.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 6:14AM

I agree. But. Where in God's name are they going to manufacture the Prius and Leaf now that those facilities have been destroyed?

Eric Cartman| 3.13.11 @ 1:26PM

It's Sunday and I'm seeing the Japanese already cleaning up. Who wants to bet the Japanese are up and running before Liberal Heaven on Earth, Haiti, has built a garage. Looking at the devastation, it reminds me of present day Detroit. Liberals, the stupid white meat.

NoLib| 3.13.11 @ 5:28PM

They really are stupid aren't they? Just look at the lawless mess in Wisconsin. Can't we Conservatives start our own country? I can't stand the morons.

beebop| 3.13.11 @ 8:52PM

Mr. Cartman ... thank you, sir for a wonderful laugh. And. Don't we all need it just now?

Dee See| 3.14.11 @ 3:36AM

----As Al Gore steps forward to claim 'Global Warning' ----STILL not a peep about the decades
old capabilities of HAARP technology (enabled by
those sterility, Alzheimer's and cancer engendering Barium, Cadmium and Aluminum oxide CHEM-trails).

Brzezinski in 'Two Ages', written more than
20 years ago openly lauds the potential for weather
weapons and seismic events. These technologies
existed then! (Perfect because no
one can prove you did it)

Anyway, the name of the game is hoisting RED
China as 'world model and enforcer', and deindustrialization and incremental genocide
worldwide. ON RECORD

Maybe it was the moon that caused the quake? ---BUT then again, maybe it's wasn't.
