The Spectacle Blog

Lord, and to think only a few weeks back I truly believed no one could be more dismissive of Michelle Obama's organic, let's-take-a-cattle-prod-to-the-fatties initiatives than me. Turns out, I'm not even in the Top 20. First there was the embarrassing scapegoating of a miniscule rise in pedestrian deaths on her (admittedly eye-roll inducing) Let's Move! effort. And now Mark Crispin Miller's decidedly liberal News From the Underground declares: "Michelle Obama's Garden is a Propaganda Masterpiece"?

By my lights calling such a laughably unserious effort a "masterpiece" is an insult to those propagandists who truly work on honing their craft, but I'll allow the Undergrounders to make their own case:

[N]ow it’s time to cut the crap: Barack Obama having pledged to make us all eat GE foods–for it is ultimately his USDA, not Tim Vilsack’s–I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Michelle’s garden was a deft stroke of diversionary propaganda, meant to make our ruthlessly Monsanto-friendly president* look just as “green” as Johnny Appleseed, or Michael Pollan.

In any case, Monsanto’s domination of our nation’s food supply will make the term “organic” meaningless, regardless of how pretty all those veggies, herbs and berries look in that nice plot on the Obamas’ heavily-guarded lawn.

Ouch! The ol' "heavily guarded lawn" epithet? Talk about ruthless! It sounds like someone has been eating Monsanto's new Rage Bean, or perhaps the Snark Berry?

Also: For the record if you read up on the history, you will find A LOT of light between Johnny Appleseed and Michael Pollan. If Obama wanted to be as green as Appleseed, he'd have to mostly forgo shoes and totally give up on beds. (Appleseed believed there would be no beds in Heaven, so why get used to them here on Earth? Hardcore!)

What is organic again? If food from genetically engineered seeds are organic can anything truly be organic? Delivering food via truck (using fossil fuel) can't be organic, can it? Would watering them with water that comes from a city treatment plant be organic (there might be remnants of chlorine in the water). I wonder how organic "organic" really is.

David: You are making me sad with your logic. Here's my rule of thumb: If it makes me feel superior to my neighbor and costs twice as much, that's organic.

One of the most easily ridiculed habits of the Old World Aristocratic Ladyships was their habit of announcing they were taking up a trendy hobby and the send the serfs and retainers to make that hobby happen. Michelle Obama's garden is just the latest manifestation of the bad habits of a aristocrat.

I heard Republicans smoke more than Democrats.
Good, more of the GOP dies off, better we are.
If you want to start a new conservative party, go ahead; until then, die away. My dear Republicans: do the world a favor and reduce the population by smoking.

I'm rootin' for ya.

Alan,
Go blow YOUR smoke somewhere else.

I see the American Spectator cuckoo clock is running 6 minutes fast. The cuckoo bird shouldn't have popped out & said it's bit until 6:15. Adjustment please.

Alan, I started to comment on your post about right-wing pro choice folks on another post on this site. I thought better, but now i'm gonna go ahead and say it. If I am pro life, that means you must be pro death. Right? Go ahead and make my day Alan. Do away with your ignorant self.

Let's be honest for a minute-Michelle's preaching of eating this or that-yet her rear is getting wider by the day.
How does that happen?

There won't be any clothes in heaven, either.
