As John Tabin
reports, Keith Olbermann has been canned. This after being
temporarily
suspended
in November for making political campaign contributions to
Democratic congressional candidates.
Olbermann’s suspension in November was bogus. Say what you will
about the man, he never hid his politics. He never feigned fairness
or balance like so many other Big Media blowhards do.
To the contrary: Olbermann wore his rabid left-wing views on his
sleeve. That, after all, is why MSNBC hired him.
It’s not clear what now has precipitated Olbermann’s sudden and
surprise resignation. The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz
notes
that Olbermann’s “combative style put him increasingly at odds with
his network bosses.”
Conservatives are bound to have mixed feelings about Olbermann’s
departure.
On the one hand, many will be glad to see this pompous, angry
windbag leave the airwaves. As National Review’s Rich
Lowry tweeted
this evening: “Who now will be there to lecture us angrily and
hatefully about the need for civility?”
In fact, Olbermann was a left-wing hypocrite. He angrily
denounced conservatives for their alleged sins while he himself
committed flagrant crimes against fairness and the truth.
But that is precisely why conservatives are going to miss him:
Olbermann was a useful and effective foil.
Indeed, he was sort of the media version of Tip O’Neil to our
Ronald Reagan-like journalistic face. He was our national scold,
our angry leftist father who bitterly denounced our right-wing
sins. Who can replace him?
Well, apparently, MSNBC is going to have another angry leftist,
Lawrence O’Donnell, take over Olbermann’s 8:00 time slot.
O’Donnell’s show currently airs on MSNBC at 10:00. However, an
equally left wing apparatchik, Ed Schultz, reportedly will move his
show from 5:00 to 10:00 to fill that void.
So not much has changed really — just a shuffling of the chairs
on the decks of the MSNBC Titanic, which gets beaten consistently
and badly in the ratings wars by its arch-rival, Fox News.

Mr. Guardiano,
"He never feigned fairness or balance like so many other Big Media blowhards do."
This is not so.
I saw Olbermann-child, interviewed by Brian Lamb, claim that when he had his first show on MSDNC, back during Bubba the pervert's Lewinsky scandal, he would get all kinds of angry letters because he was covering the story. Thus proving that he had no ideological bias.
He didn't mention to Mr. Lamb that he quit that show because he said he got sick of doing the Lewinsky stories day in and day out.
If someone will lie to Brian Lamb, how can they ever be trusted?
jharp| 1.22.11 @ 3:25PM

Hmmm. Like say Fox News? They are the ONLY ones who claim fair and balanced.

Hold on there. You just said he never feigned fairness.

"in fact, Olbermann was a left-wing hypocrite."
I think what the author means is that even for his left wing views, Olberman was a hypocrite (e.g. Scolding the rhetoric of the right while saying, and having said, things that made most of the targeted speech look inane).
frank| 1.22.11 @ 11:56PM
"Hmmm. Like say Fox News? They are the ONLY ones who claim fair and balanced."
Fair and balanced means that at least you'll get to hear the other side - Olberwimp would never dare debate a conservative on his show (ALL Fox news opinion hosts have both sides on their shows) because he's wrong and frankly not that smart.
So THAT' why Fox news is Fair (both side get their say) and balanced.
And if you don't know Keef's lies, well it's because you rely on he and John Stewart for your "news" - sportscaster and comedian.

This Conservative does not have mixed feelings about Keith Olbermann departure from MSNBC.
This whole situation is way too funny.
But don't feel bad for Keith.
He has plenty of job prospects available to him.
Here is a quick list:

2...."This Week with Keith Olbermann" now transmitting at a blazing 4 watts, channel 10 on the CB band.
3....Lead celebrity on the all male version of "The View".
4....Guest "Flack Catcher" at the White House.
5....Host of the new afternoon kiddie horror film show as "Ax Slasher Keith".
6....Tag team talk show host with Howard Stern, as the "Wing-Nut Of All Media".
7....Larry King's replacement as the "Crypt-Keeper".
8....Writer of his latest book "My Life as a Video Rodeo Clown".
9....Editor of the New York Times.
10.... Jeffery Immelt's newest butler.

Hopefully, Comcast will change the atmosphere at MSLSD. How novel it would be to have unbiased news programs other than FOX again. I don't know much about Comcast politically speaking, but I would hope they would look to create an unbiased approach to reporting the news because the previous owner certainly wasn't attracting viewers other than the deranged on the far left with their ridiculously slanted programming & opinionated pundits like K.O. FOX also needs some real competition. I don't watch FOX much anymore because I feel their product is not what it once was due to lack of competition. Sheppard Smith's coverage of the shooting of Rep. Giffords in Arizona a few weeks ago was pathetic & I had to turn him off. Basically, FOX has gotten dull & needs to be livened up with some real competition. Will Comcast clean house at MSLSD & try to compete with FOX? Time will tell I guess. If they continue with catering to the deranged far left they won't attract any new viewers to be sure. News programs are not supposed to be echo chambers of opinions of those reporting the "news". It's time Comcast take the LSD out of MSLSD. The station is currently a Zappa-esque parody of what news programming should be.
Oldefarte| 1.23.11 @ 10:10AM
Kenneth, I agree with your thoughts, but remember that MSNBC was/is/will be an extremist out of the network closet for the likes of NBC, CBS, ABC, etc. They will never attempt to be middle of the road, unbiased, etc. The definition of journalism is liberalism/progressiveism. True FOX has many faults which you rightfully highlighted, but before their existance, the airwaves was historically dominated by the liberalized left. Probably, the most extensive news coverage on TV would/has come from CNN, but they too become sidetracked occassionally by booring content. If/until there is an viable alternative to FOX, it is simply the ONLY GAME IN TOWN, televisionly speaking!!!!!!

Here is one of my favorite examples of Olbermann-child's long, long list of lies. Mostly because it was exposed, in real-time, almost immediately after he spewed it.
It was not long after the pompous windbag had returned to MSDNC, back in 2003?, I think. He was on earlier then, but I don't remember at what time.
Mann-child did a whole segment on some guy who made steam engine automobiles at the turn of the century. He prattled on and on about how these cars were better than those powered by the internal combustion engine.
He then laid out an elaborate conspiracy theory, as lefty kooks are always prone to do, about how the steam powered auto industry was destroyed by a collusion between Henry Ford, Rockefeller, and the rest of.....BIG OIL! Dum....Dum...Duuuuuum
Thus, depriving all of us of these early green machines.
He never explained that in order to create steam, you must burn something!
A few segments later, KO announced that a special guest had just called in, unexpectedly. It was Jay Leno. KO was practically preening, thinking Leno was going to praise his story.
Instead, Leno explained that Mann-child's report was completely wrong! The reason the steam powered car failed was because they were death traps. Boilers exploded, severly burning their owners, and sometimes killing them. They could catch fire just trying to start them. The free market, we actually had one back then, picked the internal combustion engine.
The look on KO's face was priceless. I wish someone with access to old Countdown shows would find that clip, and post it on youtube. It was great!
(Sorry about the length of this post.)
bobmontgomery| 1.22.11 @ 5:25PM
Speaking of looks on KO's face, I once watched the late Elizabeth Edwards (GRHS) be interviewed by KO in the keyday of the Kerry-Edwards thing and she played him like a violin. She resurrected the memory of her son who had been killed in an accident years earlier and assured Keith that her son had greatly, greatly admired Keith and his work. When she was done, Olbermann was literally in tears.. Oh, the drama of it all.

Are you people really this stupid?
Dixie Pixie| 1.22.11 @ 8:31PM
The kerosene lamp was superior????
JHarp...The public could not get rid of them fast enough when there was any alternative.
The reason is simple.
Drop a electric lamp and you may break one bulb.
Drop a kerosene lamp and you will have a major oil fire.
Legend has it that Mrs. O'Leary's cow knocked over a kerosene lamp and burned down most of Chicago.
So if you don't believe me, call your home insurance agent and ask him to quote a rate for going all "Green" by replacing your electric lights with soy bean oil in lamps.
You will see your fire insurance rate go through the roof.
Oil lamps are definitely inferior to electric lamps and never did the whales any good.

What I never understood is how MSNBC could legally dictate how an employee spends their salary. I was not shedding any tears; mind you.
I have worked in many types of companies. I've gone through background, credit, and drug tests. Never once, has there been a policy specifying how I can spend my net pay.
Nick| 1.22.11 @ 6:20PM
Mrs./Miss Moore,
MSDNC could do it because there was a contract, voluntarily agreed to by both sides, that said they could.
When you agree to work for someone else, and exchange your time and labor for their money, you have entered into a master/slave relationship. This is the origin of the employer/employee relationship. Of course, today the employee is free to leave, if he wants to.
The origin of being "fired" came from the practice of someone having their contract fired, i.e. set on fire, to terminate their obligations.
There is no right to a job. You either work for yourself, as a Freeman, or you choose a master.
alice moore| 1.23.11 @ 9:35PM
Please folks, I'm not defending KO. You mentioned a contract. He must have not had a very bright legal team.
So MSNBC is headquartered in a right to work state? Very ironic.
BTW, I am for Right to Work on balance. Those states do have greater employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
I loved jharp's comment. Everyone is an idiot in his or her eyes. He/she seems to be stuck on the subject of whale oil lamps.
The posting of multiple advertising spams might be a new Soros tactic.
beebop| 1.23.11 @ 9:01AM
In a right to work state, you can be discharged for any reason. Even the color of your tie. Or for no stated reason of any sort. Work for a liberal not for profit and you hear things like "advancing an opinion 'not in keeping with' the purpose of the organization." What the hell does that purport to mean?
alice moore| 1.23.11 @ 9:54PM
I am surprised that an organization would put that in their contract. Most of the businesses I have worked for have only cared for useless things like showing up for work on time, being productive, not calling in sick with a hangnail....
Keith Olbermann's situation just highlights that you can sign away every Constitutional right in a variety of contracts.

JHarp....You are really are a bundle of laughs.
I have never seen a more perfect parody of liberal logic.
You have no concept of side to side comparisons.
You blatantly misuse temporal comparisons.
You certainly have no concept of the uses of competition for sorting out the better methodology.
For example, historically the two main generators of light were candles and oil lamps.
Candles were preferred due to the greater fire hazard of oil lamps as well as the greater smoke and smell of oil lamps.
When all three were in competition, the sales volume of the three light sources indicates the superiority of each light source.
The totals are:::
Electric 99%
Candles 01%
Oil Lamps [endangered to extinct]
Clearly electric lamps are superior to all other light sources.
Just for laughs, in what category or usage do you think oil lamps are superior.
They certainly resulted in the near extermination of the whales.
Or don't you like whales?

Greetings Nick
It is good to hear from again.
My Great Aunts owned a country store that was first started in my extended family in 1822.
As a result they had a whole wall full of oil lamps of all shapes and sizes.
They and the store are gone now but I did keep two very nice blown glass models for sentimental value.
So I do know a little something about oil lamps.
The only people I know who consistently use oil lamps are the Amish who do so for religious reasons.
Otherwise my logic is sound and JHarp was illogical in his reasoning.
That may be the result of Psychic channeling the neighborhood squirrels.
We may never know unless he answers back.
Stay in touch Nick.

Aren't oil lamps much cleaner and easier than candles?
Dixie Pixie| 1.23.11 @ 4:05PM
Greetings Nick
No apologies are necessary.
As for the need to humble a known hater of whales, I do sympathize.
See my post to Bob below.
As to the question which smokes more, candles or oil lamps, as a general rule oil lamps do.
Kerosene is a lighter hydrocarbon than paraffin or beeswax, so the smell and smoke is more noticeable.
However I do remember my Great Aunts selling a triple refined kerosene that barely smelled like kerosene and never smoked.
These days what is mostly sold is 1st cut highly filtered kerosene.
The only good oils I have seen lately is the scented oils.
The bottom line is the choice between candles and oil lamps is a subjective one.
To each his own.
Electric Lights are still clearly superior.
Nobody sells a candle or kerosene lit 52 inch LCD big-screen TV.

Olbermann was an obviously radicalized liberal hack who was also......STUPID [the image of a Jewish boy with a bennie atop his head following his mommie to baseball games immediately comes to mind]. Will he be missed as a foil for conservatives......HADES, NO. IMO, the whole MSNBC should be cancelled, since it is a COMING OUT OF THE NETWORK CLOSET of sorts for their parent, NBC. What Brokaw, Curic, etc couldn't/wouldn/t say publically; was transferred to morons like Olbermann, Reed, Maddow, Matthews, O'Donnell, etc to spew forth from their hypocritical pie-holes. The network is [in a word]..........DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!

Olbermann---is a German Unitarian, Oldefarte. We don't wear Beanies, we wear Kippahs---reminds us that G-d is above us.
Olbermann is a bit of an antisemite, as well.

70 comments on this inevitable firing!
(Including the ads for Tennis Rackets, shoes, golf clubs et al.)
Wow!
He probably was fired for gross insubordination. It would be in character.

Greetings Bob
The responses have reached above 86 comments.
Not a record but a lively exchange of viewpoints nevertheless.
TAS has done the World a unexpected and possibly unappreciated service.
It has recently been deduced that there may be a Secret Cabal of Psychic Squirrels using muddled-headed liberals to to their bidding.
"JHarp" writings have reveled he is under control of Squirrels by psychic means.
A further examination of "JHarp" writings have reveled a Secret Plot by the Psychic Squirrels to exterminate the whales.
Their willing tool, "JHarp" has been trying to push the concept that oil lamps are superior to electric lamps thus paving the way for elimination of electricity.
Obama definitely under control of Psychic Squirrels, is well on his way in shutting down oil production.
If he succeeds in that and in shutting down coal production he will be well on his way to repealing the Industrial Revolution and electricity.
Then the only means of illumination will be oil lamps.
With no oil production or refining the only source of oil will be Whale Oil.
Thus the Secret Plot by the Psychic Squirrels to exterminate the whales is revealed by "JHarp".
Was this conspiracy theory written purely to amuse and entertain.
Of course.
But within any conspiracy theory there lies a grain of truth.
Let "JHarp" explain himself.
Besides he still owes the TAS Readership 10 funny Olbermann quotes.

Yall are badly underestimating KO's wealth. He doesn't have to run a 10-watt CB station or be anyone's butler. After the two-year noncompete period, he'll have enough money to buy and endow a real TV station, or a small college, or a foundation, to guarantee himself an unarguable platform forever.
Fortunately he won't have the sense to do any of these things, since he appears to be more into raw celebrity adulation than actual politics.

Enough money to buy a real TV station? Give me a break. At his peak he was only making $7 million a year at MSNBC, not $70 million. Sorry, but he couldn't even afford to purchase the WB or UPN.

Can someone please do something about the dozens of spam emails on this thread?
