NYT: Lieberman Won’t Seek Reelection

Sen. Joe Lieberman will not seek reelection, the New York Times reports.

Speculation had been swirling all day since he scheduled a news conference for tomorrow.

Liebermanfound himself in an increasingly precarious position. Liberals never forgave him for running as an independent in 2006 after losing the primary to Ned Lamont. He has been a repeated thorn on their side on national security issues and raised their anger further by opposing a public option. At the same time, his support for Obama’s key domestic priorities — including the economic stimulus package and ObamaCare — erroded whatever remained of the tacit support he had built up with Republicans, who helped elect him in 2006.

It’s hard to see what his constituency would be if he were to run in 2012.
