David Brooks Imparts Wisdom

Practicing a piece of music for four hours requires focused attention, but it is nowhere near as cognitively demanding as a sleepover with 14-year-old girls.

That claim is from Brooks’s op-ed criticizing Amy Chua’s controversial Wall Street Journal article, “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior.”

He is the embodiment of what she speaks against in her article. Children are happy when they master something not when they are told that being average is okay. It's similar to not keeping score at a child's basketball game and giving trophies for participating. She demands her children excel and that will make them better adults. They interact with other children all day long at school. There is no special need for them to go out of their way to interact. I have seen the results of the Chinese way from my wife's family and the ones that push it to the hilt are much better for the effort.
