Hans Bader has an
absolutely superb column in today’s Washington
Examiner. When Al Sharpton and Paul Kanjorski are picked by,
respectively, the New York Times and the Washington
Post, to lecture all of us on civility, the world truly has
turned upside down.
Here’s a line I overheard a little while ago: Asking Al Sharpton
to write on civility is like asking Judas Iscariot to give a
lecture on loyalty. Maybe that’s too harsh. Instead of Judas, how
about Brutus? Still too harsh? Tell that to Steve Pagones.
Meanwhile, the Left’s obsession with bashing Sarah Palin
continues unabated, with more columns and comments than I can count
that blast her video yesterday, usually in mouth-foaming fashion
about how she somehow coarsened the discourse and how she somehow
should be blamed for grabbing the spotlight yesterday and making
the story “all about her.” To that, I want to repeat and highlight
a line from one of my comments last night: Sarah Palin no more
“thrust” or “inserted” herself into the Tucson story than Richard
Jewell forced himself into the spotlight after the Atlanta Olympics
bombing.
Think about it.

Palin is just a symbol for the Right. They're really just trying to demonize us. Who else stands between them and their political ambitions?

ACynic| 1.13.11 @ 11:37PM
I believe it was Joseph Goebbels that originated that line. Goebbels was Hitler's Minister of Propaganda, and one of the very best propagandists ever. His propaganda concepts are used today most often by leftists, liberal progressives and communists.

You are correct, ACynic. Mr. Moderate, sometimes the truth IS ugly.
JmsA| 1.14.11 @ 1:43PM
I believe you're correct, Patriot. They're trying to demonize Palin so they can tie her around our necks, as they have invariably done with any prominent conservative whose very existence and efforts they perceive a threat to their power. Another reason, is simply their nature: attack and dehumanize those who oppose them in their insatiable quest for power.
old progrmr| 1.14.11 @ 1:57PM
First, I am not a fan of Palin. I am a Conservative, but I find Palin to be soemwhat of an embarrassment at times. We should be able to find much better representatives than her (that voice alone sends chills down my spine, rather than a tingle up my leg). But, I contiue to ask - what is it about her that sends the leftists into such a rage? The Bush derangement syndrome was, indeed, a thing to behold, but the responses to Palin are beyond the pale. What is it?
Jamie| 1.15.11 @ 1:30AM
She's the only Republican who has a shot in hell of beating Obama. And the Left knows it.
Laura| 1.13.11 @ 6:32PM
I believe that its well past the time when we keep looking the other way while Ms Palin makes these enormous gaffes. She has been unable to successfully transition between party cheer leader --rallying the base, to a tempered pragmatist; the main reason she is off-putting to the Indie voter and moderate. She is polling at the bottom of the heap where Indies are concerned and she seems stubbornly adhered to this angry, impulsive stance with a giant chip on her shoulder. Furthermore, those of us who looked forward to watching her trajectory from '08 have been greatly let down to see her quit the governor's position that she was elected to while rejecting calls for her to show more discipline. So if it seems that there is a pile-on, then perhaps we all need to admit that we had high hopes for Palin and that she needed to DO more to deserve that anticipation for greatness, rather than just anticipate that she WOULD do more. She has shown little interest in educating herself or completing anything beyond her latest self-promoting tv series. Such talent has now, I'm afraid, been tainted forever, by her own hand and inability to reign in her own quest for fame. It must be earned and so far, she hasn't worked hard enough for it, nor should she be given a pass on scrutiny.

Mark Mac| 1.14.11 @ 2:21AM
Sorry, I have to agree with Laura. I love Sarah and she certainly has brought a great deal of freshness to American political debate. Still, she lacks the gravitas to win a presidential election. It is imperative that Republicans take the White House in 2012 and Sarah, how ever much conservative/tea party members like her, will never win over independents who are crucial in national elections. Playing to the base is the easiest thing a politician can do, but in a presidential election the successful candidate must reach out to the middle. Though it disturbs some of my conservative friends, I still contend that central to McCain's loss to Obama. Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, these are the states we must win to take win the WH in '12. If Palin is to make run, she must prove to voters in these states, she must do more than repeat more than mere platitudes about the free market, etc., she must demonstrate some depth, she has to be able to talk about economics and foreign affairs in a manner that demonstrates she has truly mastered these subjects. So far she has not done that.
Jamie| 1.15.11 @ 1:31AM
Buzz off, bozo.

Deborah D | 1.14.11 @ 6:32AM
What "enormous gaffe" ? "Blood libel"? Alan Dershowitz shot than one down. Sarah Palin is being herself. You can like her or not. If she decides to run for president she will have to compete with whatever the rest of the Republican field is. I personally think she has done the Republican Party (and conservatives in general) a huge favor by standing up for us when other week-kneed politicians would rather duck and cover. She stands tall and unafraid. She is a courageous woman. I don't know if she is presidential material or not, but she's tougher than half the men that are in the spotlight right now, and she has the ability to change the conversation. That's power. More power to her. And, what "pass" has she been given on "scrutiny"?
nohype| 1.14.11 @ 7:01AM
Some people keep babbling that Sarah Palin is not presidential. But if those on the Left did not see her as presidential, why would they be so obsessed with her? This most recent attack from the Left, based on a fraudulent premise that she put the cross hairs of a gun sight on a map (they are position indicators, a map symbol to show exact location--a gun sight cannot have cross hairs extending outside the scope), was meant to destroy her. It is not gaffes that are the source of the attack but this desire to eliminate, and that in turn comes from the realization that the current president is totally out of his depth. If he were strong and she were weak, there would be no need to do what they are doing. What people do is usually more revealing than what they say.
Al Adab| 1.14.11 @ 11:28AM
"Why do the heathen rage?" to borrow a quote. The Left is afraid of Palin since the current President is living proof that one need not be qualified in order to be elected. Her resume' is a stronger one that his. They will continue to spend the next couple years ridiculing her (and any other potential candidate) in order to retain their position and power. That after all is the purpose of politics, in their view.
Pete| 1.14.11 @ 11:54AM
Did I really get censored for referring to the president as the Mocha Messiah? Or was it equating the Messiah's presidential qualities to those of a pet rock? Have the editors gone RINO? Guess I will find out soon.
Jamie| 1.15.11 @ 1:32AM
They went RINO a long time ago, but your post wasn't censored.
VDon | 1.14.11 @ 8:36AM
So, the comment notes with regard to Governor Palin " . . . nor should she be given a pass on scrutiny." Could anyone in America doubt that the incumbent at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was given a pass on scrutiny during the 2008 campaign?
Respectfully,
VDon

The gnashing of teeth and the showing of pangs aimed at scaring Palin (and her followers) is actually a biblical fight between Good and Evil.
Now at the risk of flummoxing the Liberals (who do not believe in the existence of Evil) in their fetid and deranged attack linking Palin as an accesory to the tragedy in Tucson who do they think represents the Good in the epic battle ? George Soros ?

The Democrat(ic ? ) Left has used inceniary language for decades but in instance of this shooting has gone to even greater heights or depths as the case may be. Why does it do this? Obviously to put the other side on the defensive--"the race card" for example. But also it involves getting rid of viable opposition. This crucial. Take GWB for example ( I wont but he is a good example ) he was hounded daily hourly out of office and he siad NOTHING OR VERY LITTLE. fantasies of assasination and what have we heard from Mainstream Conservatives on this ? There was no bruhaha. No questioning say from the Republican party no press conferences No major upraor over Bush's treatment by the MSM and foreign media etc. NOTHING!!!!!!!!
And it wen unabated.
Today in the midst of a evil and basically assasination --one dead judge and one nearly fatally wounded congresswomanplus five other dead bystanders and a dozen wounded other. What do we get ? The talk radio is to blame( you kno all the names ) and sarah palin is to blame. And what kind of reaction do we get: Well from the Left we get death threats to Sarah palin and on the Ringtwe get from SOME: Oh Obama made a wonderful speech --and Sarah Palin looked foolish ( the template of Washington of the LEFT LIBERAL ELITE ). Sorry, but Obama may have memorized a well written speech and said it well in intonation BUT what appears totally ignored is this; HE HAS CONTRIBUTED MIGHTILY TO THE ENVIRONMENT OF DIVISION AND HAS NOT ADMITTED IT OPENLY ON HIS OWN RIGHT. Its as if he has never spoken before and now he comes in makes a "wonderful speech and has NO PRIOR RECORD"".
Now that this wonderful speech has been made lets see how civil we get. So far death Threats to Palin go unabated as of yesterday.
More importantly lets see what Obama does from here on in. Since last I heard he is still the president he will make more speeches. Will he show civility or will he revert to form.
If he contiues on Class Warfare, Urges his supporters to be agressive with the opposition or anything at all that says " on to the barricades". The those who give Obama such rave reviews will look foolish indeed. If Obama is all sweetness and light breaks bread with Republican tea Partiers and says he believes in the Free Market well Hallelujah!!!!!!!! I will be the first to applaud.
SO DO NOT LET THIS ISSUE DISTRACT YOU. THERE WILL BE A VOTE TO REPEAL OBAMACARE. STAY TUNED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Palin has principles, common sense, and fearlessness---plus she drives the bad guys nuts. This is a rather good combination in a leader.
Stan Redmond| 1.14.11 @ 10:45AM
Laura may have cut and pasted every single talking point the concern trolls' anti-Palin talking points.
There are the MSNBC and Moveon types that absolutely must destroy her and her family and will do anything and everything to accomplish that goal. Then there is the "concerned Republican" sect that must destroy her but use the kinder and gentler "She's just not presidential" screde.
Remember Reagan was the amiable dupe actor. He destroyed the USSR and, despite his comprimises with the liberals at the time, encouraged a policy that led to huge economic growth after a liberal malaise.
Jullou | 1.14.11 @ 1:10PM
These Alinsky rules (Rules for Radicals, by Saul Alinsky) are always being used by leftists against conservatives:
3. "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)
8. "Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."
10. "The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign."
