The Spectacle Blog

Sarah Palin has clearly been thinking about how her name has become embroiled in the discussion surrounding the murders. She responded with a 7-minute video message on Wednesday morning:

I am not impressed with Palin’s message.

Palin seemed a little bit detached, too scripted, too focused on “how we were meant to be” as Americans and “how America is exceptional,” all of which is true and should be emphasized — just not today.

She is right to accuse the left and their media lackeys of creating a “blood libel” (primarily against her, but also against the Tea Party movement), but then moving on to discussions of history is just too philosophical for a time when we’re all watching memorial services and agony on television. (For an interesting comment on Palin’s use of the term “blood libel,” I suggest John Tabin’s thoughts.)

Palin’s missive was perhaps the first time I’ve ever seen her seem unable to connect with people at an appropriate level. Yes, it’s just my opinion, and I’m one of few people who feels basically neutral about Governor Palin. But her strength has always been to be the most “common” of “common man,” a term I do not mean as a put-down. She’s “every woman,” a PTA mom with kids who have problems and issues like many other kids, etc.

Yet today, she struck a nearly academic, above-it-all pose, with her usual warmth replaced by a seeming coolness more typical of Barack Obama than of Sarah Palin. She spoke for too long about too theoretical and historical ideas (again, interesting and good ideas, but inappropriate for today). She completely missed the opportunity to strengthen her strong suit, namely her ability to create an enotional connection with Americans by showing herself to be more or less just like the rest of us.

I don’t think Palin’s performance this morning was bad enough to be her “Jindal moment” (remember when Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal gave a near-career-ending Republican response to the State of the Union Address?). But I don’t think Palin did herself any favors on Wednesday morning, and I continue to believe that I will win my bet that she will not become a candidate for president.

Ross, You are an idiot! It was a great response. I have always been skeptical of Palins ability to lead but the video was great. Plus Im not impressed with you, Also, who the hell are you and what have you ever done.

inge| 1.13.11 @ 5:10AM

Totally agree; Palin's video response was graceful, direct, and needed.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 2:14PM

I disagree. She was Presidential. She had a great message for the country and she still slapped the media hard.

Wes| 1.12.11 @ 2:19PM

She is clearly upset. I don't really care how people perceive her ability to connect with the common man right now. She has been drug through the mud in the most disgusting way since Saturday. Her 'delivery' is of no importance. I've never seen hatred like the kind she receives from the left. For the time being, just pray for her.

ECM| 1.12.11 @ 3:13PM

Not a huge Palin fan*, but Wes has this about as dead-on as anyone I've read.

*I like her, personally, but I'm not remotely sold on her as presidential material.

PattyMor| 1.12.11 @ 2:21PM

Sarah Palin is all things that are truly American:
ruggedness, can-do, outdoorsy, smiling, positive, common sense, and freedom-loving. She is not warmed over, pre-packaged, and hair-sprayed liberal University sameism with a dark suit and red tie.
The Left has tried their best to besmirch her reputation because they are truly afraid that she would dismantle their welfare state and hence their source of power.

Geist | 1.12.11 @ 9:12PM

Stereotyping and putting down the Left is just as damaging as the Left sterotyping and putting down the Right. Not all people on the Left are like that, or feel that way.

Personally, I don't hold anything against her, although I have remarked on her bad choices--and she has made them. But I treat all politicians that way. I am not afraid of her in the least, or think she or any other politician could dismantle the welfare state (although some reform would help imo). I am a member of the Left.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 2:23PM

Disagreement is what makes a market, as we say in my business.

Nobama, you don't merit a response.

Thanks. I'm always on the lookout for interesting things to add to my blogroll.

Durablehawk| 1.12.11 @ 2:25PM

I thought she did very well. In six minutes she articulated what many of us wish other Republican had the courage to say.

Wish you "smart" guys weren't so negative.

Clint| 1.12.11 @ 2:28PM

No Sweat.

Remember Bubba Clinton's Bombed 32 Minute Speech Nominating Michael Dukakis.

However, many of We Tea Party Rebels want to draft Our Kingmaker & Senate Point Man Jim Demint of South Carolina for The Presidency in 2012.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 2:29PM

Wes,

Perhaps part of the problem is that she doesn't seem "clearly upset", at least not to me.

Patty, I agree with your analysis of who Palin is. My point is that for the first time I can recall, she didn't seem that way.

To be clear, I think what the media has done to Palin was, to put it kindly, malpractice. To put it more directly, it was disgusting. I just think she could have done a better job in responding.

borderpatriot| 1.12.11 @ 2:30PM

Palin's message was perfect...Kaminsky's message was rubbish...Ross,please pull down on your lower lip and wrap it over your head and, swallow hard.

David W| 1.12.11 @ 2:31PM

I'll see it later. However, the fact that it is "scripted" may mean that she wanted to be very careful about the message she was sending. Shooting from the hip (no pun intended) on something like this can be politically dangerous (though for her just saying the sky is blue can be politically dangerous). Unfortunately the Jewish lobby has come out against her use of blood libel (though I think that it may be the left wing side of the lobby that is the most offended).

I Survived Arlen Specter| 1.12.11 @ 2:31PM

Mr. Kaminsky, after reading this column I get the notion you are one of those Republicans who will never be happy with anything Sarah Palin does. I think she did a good job & "dear leader" will have a damn hard time coming across as Presidential as she did today. I guess you better hope The Stupid Party & the media nominate another RINO to run for POTUS in 2012. Chances are, you'll get one. Not because a RINO will win, but because GOP pundits like yourself & the sheer idiots running The Stupid Party fear running anyone other than a RINO. If a RINO is nominated say hello to four more years of the community organizer in chief Mr. Kaminsky. GOD bless!

GGinPGH| 1.12.11 @ 2:32PM

Really? Detached? Watching this I thought, for the first time, yes she could be president. Obama, despite his "gift" for speaking (cough) hasn't yet delivered anything this presidential.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 2:33PM

Durable: I just "called it as I saw it". I certainly didn't want or expect to have this reaction when I heard that she had released a video. Having met Palin (and given her a book to read), I'm not predisposed to dislike her. That's partly why I was disappointed enough to write this blog entry. Of course I understand that many of her fans will disagree with me.

Clint: I think DeMint is great but I'm not convinced that he could beat Barack Obama. (I'm also not convinced he couldn't...) We sure do need someone with his approach, even if it's not him.

Clint| 1.12.11 @ 2:35PM

Lay Some Names On Us Mr.K.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 2:38PM

"I survived":

First, as I've said, I'm pretty neutral on Palin. I like her more than I don't like her, for sure, and I'd rather have her as president than BHO.

It's funny that you accuse me of reflexively being against anything she says and does, whereas I'd submit there are more commenters on this page who reflexively support anything she says and does. If you read my past writing, I have been both complimentary and critical of her.

As for supporting a RINO, here are a few data points:

When guest-hosting a local radio show, I said that I was refusing to support John McCain because "if he represents winning then we've already lost." I supported Pat Toomey over Arlen Specter way back when and supported Toomey again this time. I gave money to Marco Rubio's campaign within days of his announcing his candidacy, even though he was polling more than 50 points behind RINO Charlie Crist.

It will be interesting to see how BHO performs tonight, or how his teleprompter performs.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 2:46PM

Clint,

Part of the problem is I don't see who those people are right now. I like Mike Pence but it's REALLY hard to get from the House to the White House. I like Mitch Daniels but wish he wouldn't go unnecessarily pissing off everybody. I like Paul Ryan but he's not going to run; same for Chris Christie.

As for the front runners, I still don't think I really know Romney or Pawlenty. I'm not a fan of Huckabee and, as much as readers of these pages might not like it, I do not see Sarah Palin as presidential material and would prefer not to see her as the candidate.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 2:54PM

Then keep looking for a better candidate because there isn't one yet. Pawlenty pissed off quite a few people by going along with the leftist narrative after the shooting. Huckabee needs to go sell used cars, Mr. RomneyCare can roll back the odometers for him.

Paul Ryan and Chris Christie are both far too new on the scene to be Presidential candidates. How are they on pro-life, amnesty and other things?

Then there is crazy Rudy the crossdresser, celebutard Donald Trump, Newt Scozzafava Gringrich etc etc. None of these guys are going to be able to keep the conservative coalition together.

I like Mike Pence too, but he should have taken the lead as an outspoken critic of Obama like Palin did. If Pence had done that he could very well have made himself the front-runner by now. Heck, it could have been him being accused of inciting murder after Saturday.

If it's not Sarah Palin, then who?

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 5:08PM

No One.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 2:48PM

The author didn't like Sarah Palin (politically) before and hasn't changed their mind. That bias has transferred to the response to this video, pretty obviously.

wodiej| 1.12.11 @ 2:54PM

Well that's why the author went through the thread trying to defend his position because it was not objective. If you can't be, then don't write.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 2:57PM

lol, I just noticed that. Sorry.

Ret_Vet| 1.12.11 @ 2:48PM

In my opinion, the video is a defining moment for Ms. Palin. She demonstrates the ability to rise above the fray and show leadership toward a brighter day. Presidential!

Bo| 1.12.11 @ 2:50PM

Palin is out of her league against the leftist establishment. She fell into their trap. The more she moves her lips, the more she's associated with this story and the more they can link her to it.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 2:56PM

She hadn't said anything since it happened and they were basically accusing her of murder. She has nothing to do with what happened in Arizona and this video doesn't change that.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 3:09PM

You've gotta be kidding me! Palin lives rent-free in Leftists' heads. If anything, Sarah will gain more support from the Right, regardless of the Left's or RINO's puerile rants.

God bless Sarah Palin.

wodiej| 1.12.11 @ 2:52PM

Since when does the author of an article go through the thread and respond to criticism?

Palin just got drug through rot, accused of being a murderer and the subject of hundreds of tweets that she die of cancer, be shot and killed or to kill herself. And you have a beef because she appeared detached? You've got to be kidding me?? Her statement is a much better response than most would give considering what she has been through. I mean, really....you've got to be kidding me?

Her history lesson is pertinent to what happened because the entire issue w the left is they used this tragedy over political discourse that is part of the fabric of our society. Where were you when history was being taught in school?

And frankly I don't give a rip whether you think she is qualified to be president or not. You are just one of millions of people that have an opinion and is no more qualified than anyone else to judge who is a great leader. I don't see an acceptable alternate.

The Republicans sat on their hands while Palin got thrown to the wolves. They can all stick it as far as I'm concerned in 2012. If she isn't qualified, I don't know who is.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 3:12PM

I agree; Kaminsky's over-reaction makes him look weak and defensive. Embarrassing.

Man up, Ross--Sarah does!

Peter | 1.12.11 @ 3:00PM

I fear this Kamasky is not ready for prime time.

Sarah Plain's response was highly effective.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 3:13PM

Kamasky? LOL!

Ellis Wyatt| 1.12.11 @ 3:07PM

I respectfully disagree, I thought she came across as quite presidential and won alot of points with that speech. Including Ronald Reagan in it certainly appealed to the base as well.

I would gauge its effectiveness by the mad scramble of the leftist media to try and dismiss it. Look how ridiculous the left looks with this made up "blood libel" controversy. Most people don't know or care about the historical context of this commonly used phrase. The fact that it so aptly describes the media in this instance is icing on the cake. The more coverage it gets the more pressure it puts on Obama to top it.

While I am not sure if Sarah is right for the presidency this whole shooting controversy and how she has handled it and how the press has messed it up has only made her stronger. Frankly, I have come to appreciate what a teflon politician she is and how frustrating that is to the media that fears her so much.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 3:12PM

My first analysis of Palin was as balanced and objective as any I've ever read by anybody, and with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, I think I nailed it:

http://rossputin.com/blog/index.php/thoughts-on-sarah-palin

It's rather amusing how among the many many times I have responded to comments and criticism of my articles here and on the Human Events web site, it is only on this note that people are suggesting that my doing so is somehow an error or inappropriate or a sign of...I'm not sure what.

Normally, I get "thank you for participating in the conversation" or something like that. Instead, some of you are confirming the worst stereotypes of Palin followers, much like Ron Paul followers (or Barack Obama followers): impervious to and offended by any less-than-glowing analysis of your current idol.

For the record: I like Palin out in public talking about politics and getting lots of people to think about politics. I'd support her running for Senate or the House of Representatives (not that she ever would), but would not be able to enthusiastically support her for president.

GeronL| 1.12.11 @ 3:23PM

"My first analysis of Palin was as balanced and objective as any I've ever read by anybody"

Modest too!

Actually if the blog writers responded to posts it would keep me coming back more. So, for that reason, I think it is a good idea.

The Candidate would seem to need to be someone ,who is acceptable to both We Tea Party Rebels & Conservative leaning Indies.

We are hearing Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana is looking at the gubernatorial election there.
I also supported Pat Toomey against The Posterboy for RINO-CINO's Arlen Specter from 2004 on,where Bush & Santorum interfered and backed Specter & Pat lost by 1.7 Percent in The GOP Primary. A semi-possible.
Marco Rubio is a young career politician with no business entrepreneurship creds. Also, we might wanna stop playin' We Got Us A Cripple Minority Woman Threefer Type of Diversity Politics & run someone who has already "Walked The Talk".
Romney's seems somewhat of a one more "Lesser Evil" GOP Candidate with a GOP Primary Mormon Problem from others, even though he's Jim Demint's buddy.

All Last Time Candidates look somewhat like Lesser Evil GOP Designated Losers.

That's just my armchair spitballin'.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 3:17PM

Clint,

I basically agree, except that I feel better about Rubio than you do.

I'm with you on running someone who has proven himself (or herself.) I get a lot of crap out here when I tell Tea Party activists (of which I consider myself one most of the time) that simply never having served in office can't be the top qualification they look for in a candidate.

I'm not sure he wants my praise, but I think this is a good piece.

But is anyone surprised Palin's main theme in her message on the AZ shootings is her own victimization at the hands of evil "journalists" and "politicos"?

I'm not.

Palin's paranoid politics comes out loud and clear in this video. I'm not sure anyone but her most ardent admirers will fail to see it.

Did some in media go too far in linking this shooting to Palin and the Tea Party?

Sure. But Palin talks about it as a conspiracy, as if the media were some coherent, monolithic entity that worked in concert to "manufacture" this "libel."

(Just for the record. "Libel" only refers to written and published slander, not to the spoken word.)

Anyway. "Blood libel." Wow. Holocaust talk. Just what the doctor ordered!

GeronL | 1.12.11 @ 3:26PM

The liberal media did its level best to incite a lynchmob to kill Palin. Yes, it was totally manufactured because there was NOTHING truthful about what they were saying.

That's exactly why I love Sarah Palin; she cuts through the BS. She has the instincts of a hunter--which she is.

Go Sarah!

JP| 1.12.11 @ 3:45PM

I'm not an admirer of Palin. But, I must say that if anyone has a reason to be a bit paranoid or ticked-off, it is her. I don't know of any pols in recent year whose had thier spouse and daughter accused of incest (DailyKoz, CNN, MSNBC); had reporters stalk thier private property; had 2 dozen reporters dumpster dive after thier trash; or had the entire MSM attack thier intelligence, marital fidelity, and have thier children mocked.

Liberal Reader| 1.12.11 @ 4:25PM

JP -

Palin is a public figure by choice. She advertises her life relentlessly on television. She wades into just about every national debate there is. She lets people discuss her as a possible candidate for president. She RAN for vice president. She gets paid millions of dollars to be in the public view.

She's going to get a lot of attention that is negative. That's the way it is. People write lunatic stuff about celebrities all the time.

And somehow we're to believe that everything negative written about her is an attempt to "destroy" her.

We're not supposed to point out there's a difference between what a blogger writes about her and what -- say -- legitimate journalists write about her. An off color joke by David Letterman is supposed to be no different from an interview with Katie Couric. It's all a big conspiracy to get Palin. As it turns out, even these shootings in Arizona were all about her! They were all about the evil elitists in the media waging a vendetta against Sarah Palin.

I'm sorry, JP. I'm not having it. I'm so weary of this woman's campaign to be seen as some kind of victim. I'm not callous, and I'm not deaf to the criticisms of SOME who tried to tie this shooting directly to Palin or the Tea Party. But Jesus. Not THAT many people made THAT much of this, and eventually people need to get a better sense of perspective. Justice is all about PROPORTION. Enough's enough.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 4:28PM

DRed| 1.12.11 @ 4:29PM

'Blood libel' has very little to do with the holocaust. I thougth it was a characteristically poor choice of words by Sarah, but that's it.

Was that a teleprompter I saw reflected in her glasses?

Liberal Reader| 1.12.11 @ 4:36PM

DRed --

"Blood libel" has quite a lot to do with the Holocaust, insofar as the Holocaust was informed by a thousand years of European antisemitism.

But I'll retract my comment if you admit that Palin seems to be doing everything she can to stir up passions at a time when you'd expect a true leader to offer some kind of encouragement and consolation to a badly shaken up country.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 4:42PM

As a Democrat who wants Obama to get a second term, the ONLY candidates that kind of scare me are ones like Romney, who is intelligent, articulate and Telegenic. Thank God he (and others like him) are seen as a RINO'S by the militant 'Tea Party' crowd and Ultra Right Wing talk show hosts. However, I thought this video was pitch-perfect. She KNOWS it will be replayed. Maybe that's why she included the blood libel reference - to insure it gets replayed. And she used it to begin the transformation from Right America's Alaska darling to more reasoned, mature presidential contender.

I am impressed.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 4:18PM

Kingofthenet,

I'm no NeoCon, but despite your sarcasm there is an argument to be made that McCain could have won had he been more conservative.

He inspired no passion at all among his base. As I wrote when McCain chose Palin as a running mate, she was the only reason he had even a glimmer of a chance.

And of course he should have denied MAN-MADE global warming. It's a hoax, after all!

Kingofthenet| 1.12.11 @ 4:23PM

Nobody knows about any bullsesyes over Republican districts, but after this, EVERYBODY knows about Sarah Palin's surveyor marks. You have Giffords telling Palin months prior about it that it was dangerous. Now you have Palin making herself out to be a victim in this. American's don't want a victim to be the president. This is Dukakis with the helmet on in the tank. This is Nixon saying he is not a crook. This is imagery and association she cannot escape. She is through, I'm telling you.

Patriot| 1.13.11 @ 3:44AM

Yes they do. Now try to stop the hysterics before you give yourself a hernia.

No one could look as stupid as Dukakis in that helmet unless you count that hilarious pic of John Freakin' Kerry in that blue NASA space suit. Dude looked like he was encased in a huge blue condom. I still laugh when I think of those two idiots in their ridiculous getups--kind of like Obama in his mom-jeans.

What's with you stooges on the Left?

ncatty| 1.12.11 @ 4:27PM

If only Steve Forbes would try again.

Kingofthenet| 1.12.11 @ 4:30PM

Too bad Sarah, didn't feel it necessary to change her Facebook page:

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 4:36PM

Why should she? She's done nothing wrong.

How much are you being paid, astroturf troll?
The money is being wasted on your paltry efforts.

nobama2011| 1.12.11 @ 4:44PM

Hey Ross, How do you have time to talk to us lowly commonfolk supporters while screwing people on derivatives or has the economy ended that scam for you.

Ross Kaminsky | 1.12.11 @ 4:52PM

nobrainer,

if you can tell me just how I "screw people" in my business, I'd be most interested to know, given that I work for myself and have no employee, no employer, and no clients or customers.

your ignorance is dripping out your ears.

i have time to talk to you because I think it has some combination of entertainment and informational value, perhaps to both sides of the conversation, even when people are disagreeing (or perhaps most when we are disagreeing.)

I have an idea. A week from Sunday (since I'm taking this Sunday off), call in to my radio show and we'll debate something. (As long as that something is relevant to my topic for the evening.)

Check http://backboneradio.net for more info if you care

Ross -- done for the day | 1.12.11 @ 4:53PM

Well, everyone, time for me to get my kids at school, give them dinner, etc.

Thanks for the lively conversation.

I appreciate your passion even while we disagree on relatively minor issues.

Until next time...

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 5:06PM

Ross, I'll await your return with bated breath. Honest.

NVA Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 5:06PM

To all on this thread,

I planned to ignore this nonsense, my feeling is that Ross is no different than Paul Krugman or Benedict Arnold, he perfectly blends the worst traits of both by writing as on a conservative site, slamming the most effective conservative warrior on the battlefield. I could not truly express why I felt that way. Fortunately, Pam Geller found all the right words to respond to Ross and the like-minded spiritual inhabitants of the swamp called DC we will drain over the next 20 years.

Here's the link

And if any editors or finance folks are reading it's writers like Ross who make folks like me NOT donate. We need our own protected, not subtly slandered by folks who stand by us on some days and abandon our own on others - because they generate web traffic.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 5:20PM

Kaminsky reminds me of Allah Pundit on Hot Air--"he" uses Palin to generate web traffic, too.
Cheap.

Liberal Reader| 1.12.11 @ 5:16PM

Well, Ross. I've just read through this thread.

Jeesh.

With friends like these ....

I'll keep an ear out for your radio show.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 5:19PM

I'm sure you will, troll.

Sparkly_One| 1.12.11 @ 8:54PM

I am not impressed with Ms Palin. I truly wanted to like her and I think I still would like to like her. She did have me at "lipstick" but lost me within a few sentences afterwards. I hoped she would mature and refine her message and delivery but over the past two years I have never found her particularly likeable, credible or trustworthy.

I don't believe that the terrible tragedy that occurred in Tucson was Ms Palin's fault. Those suggesting so are playing the politics game that I find disgusting and insulting at this sad time. That said, the irony of Congresswoman Giffords comments (a few months ago) about the targets on the map on Ms Palin's website and the coincidental shooting opens the door to a discussion that could help bring us together.Ms Palin could have quite easily expressed sympathy for those gunned down and stepped up to leading a healthier use of our words. Some may think that by doing so she would be somehow admitting to contributing to the Arizona tragedy. I think those of us that think for ourselves would be able to discern things. As a mother, a business leader and community leader I am very careful with the words I use and look for leaders that do so too. It is my opinion that Ms Palin missed an opportunity.

In my opinion, Ms Palin could have taken the higher road and just been sad with the rest of us instead of inciting things more. Unfortunately my impression is that she would prefer to keep sparring with the media and with those that want to take her on.

The whole thing is just plain disappointing- in my opinion.

Patriot| 1.13.11 @ 11:29PM

I'm sure your mother was greatly disappointed when she birthed you, too, silly concern troll.

Janette | 1.12.11 @ 9:33PM

I'm very surprised by the people who can't accept any criticism. That's just part of a political figures life.

I imagine Palin does feel detached right now, probably from being in such a state of shock. This may be the worse things have gotten from her. I'm glad she's taking it seriously. However, I think the best response is to remind everyone to focus on the victims right now.

I'm very disappointed in the media, and how they've focused on her when they should be focusing on the victims.

I'm neutral Palin, but I can't take her as a serious Presidental candidate after getting her own reality show.

Patriot| 1.12.11 @ 10:08PM

More useless trolls and concern trolls. Go back to HuffPo where you belong.

JERRYFREAK| 1.12.11 @ 10:57PM

THE MAJORITY OF THE NATION WISH SARAH PALINS CUNT WOULD GET AIDS LOL GOD BLESS AMERICA NIT GOD BLESS THE LYING CUNT FROM ALASKA ROFL

Ellie Light| 1.13.11 @ 12:28AM

Jerry you must really be frustrated having to eat through your restraints each day. But if you wish to spread AIDs why don't you just donate your blood?

Patriot| 1.13.11 @ 3:49AM

"Jerry" is scary. So many vile freaks on the Left.
