Late this afternoon I blasted the CBS editor in chief for
criticizing Sarah Palin (hardly my own favorite Republican)
for daring to defend herself, and accusing her of “playing the
victim card.” I had to run to an engagement, but it’s time to
follow up with similar outrage to
this idiocy from ABC News: “Sarah Palin, once again, has found
a way to become part of the story.”
FOUND a way? Huh? Through absolutely zero fault of her own,
minding her own business other than to issue a very brief and
appropriate statement of condolences last Saturday as almost every
national political figure did, Palin found herself thrust into this
story without ever wanting to be part of it. For four days she sat
by as numerous figures on the left and in the media (a redundancy)
accused her of being all but an accessory to mass murder, merely
because she used an absolutely common image in a political ad in an
absolutely common and innocuous way. Why is she required to sit
back and take it? Does ABC believe she should do what Bobby Knight
once said of rape victims, that she should “lie back and enjoy it”?
Go back and read her video released today. More than 90 percent of
it was eloquent and utterly pitch-perfect from ANY perspective. The
self-defense part was pointed but hardly outlandish. Only the
“blood libel” line pushed the envelope the slightest bit, although
even that wasn’t totally outlandish (as even Alan dershowitz
acknowledged while defending her use of the phrase).
Sarah Palin no more “found a way to become part of the story”
than Richard Jewell “found a way” to be falsely accused of setting
the bomb at the Atlanta Olympics. Palin already was part of the
story; all she did was try to make the story right. ABC, meanwhile,
clearly meant a back-handed insult of Palin in mind when it ended
its entry by contrasting, in its “tale of two speeches,” Palin with
Obama by praising Obama with these words: The “goal of his address
will be to lift the nation up in this moment, not sully it with
politics.” By clear implication, they suggest tht it is Palin who
is doing the sullying. Easy for them to say. It wasn’t Obama whose
was calumnized for four days straight. It was Palin whose ame was
sullied by vicious politics. It was absolutely proper for her to
denounce the politics and defend her own honor — in what actually
was a rather dignified way.

I'm not so sure this was a cheap shot.
Somehow Palin thinks the major issue this week is how she herself has been victimized by elitists in the media.
I don't care how unfair some of the criticisms of her were. Her response to them was extremely strange -- and the remark about "blood libel" was irresponsible.

How disgusting. Palin was beaten from pillar to post and back again all week. She was practically accused of hiring loughner as a hit man.

You should actually view the video. It was (perhaps too long) but it was a measured and appropriate response. Much more measured and appropriate than anything produced by the left. The president should have come out much earlier with the response he had at the memorial service. That might have quelled the inappropriate "targeting" of Sarah Palin and the right in general all week by those Liberal Reader seems to love.
Warrior | 1.13.11 @ 10:57AM
The only question I'm left with is, are you a moron or a jackass? By the way, liberal, Harvard Law Profession, Alan Dershowitz stated the use of blood libel was in context and used properly by Mrs. Palin. By the way, her response would only seem stranged to a moron.
ME| 1.13.11 @ 2:54PM
LR can't describe how or why Sarah Palin's responses were "strange," he or she only takes it as an article of faith that they were. In actuality, Palin did what any reasonable person could be expected to do when falsely accused of inciting murder: She lamented the killings, and the distraction from the real victims caused by these scurrilous, shameful charges. Many people objected to the use of "blood libel" but most saw it as only an understandable rhetorical choice that should have been changed out of sensitivity to Jews. Only the overtly partisan commenters suffering from Sarah Palin Derangement Syndrome made a lot of hash out of the use of the term.
What's irresponsible is making false charges of responsibility for a heinous crime. What's irresponsible is echoing and defending those clearly false charges in the media.
And for the record, Palin has been victimized by "elitists" in the media, and not just this week. She at least has the good sense to recognize that the true victims of the events in Arizona are the ones who were shot and their families.

Let's see... "death panels" was her rhetorical reference to plans to employ end-of-life counseling in concert with rationing of health care. Not only was it in the bill, but it got removed in part because Palin raised the issue. Then, the Obama Administration tried to sneak in back in via regulations, until people got wind of this and pressured them into removing it again.
The bullseye marks (actually cross-hairs in this case, Spock) are a common way of identifying specifics on a graphic. Just as the people over at the Daily Kos, who not only used them in a similar graphic identifying members of Congress, but had cross-hairs of their own pointing at Rep. Giffords.

Liz| 1.13.11 @ 1:23AM
Palin is reaping what she sowed when she chose to post the names and faces of people and put gun crosshairs over their location. Something similar maps did not go so far as to do. Palin calls for individuals to be held accountable for their actions, so too must she be. She voices concerns over a "blood libel" being "manufactured" against her and yet a year ago when Gabby Gifford herself voiced concerns over having crosshairs put on her location (along with a link to her name and photo) where was Sarah's concern then? Giffords concerns were expressed were on the heels of having her office windows shot out and later having tea partiers picketting with Sarah's own "don't retreat... RELOAD" mantra on their posters. If journalist, pundits, and citizens questioning the appropriateness of Palins use of violent language and imagery (both a year ago and today) is a 'blood libel' then so too is her statements and actions against others. That's the point. And she still doesn't get it. She speaks of "shrill crys of imagined insults" from others, but this doesn't apply to her (e.g., facetious indignation to 'Lipstick on a Pig' statements unrelated to her). She says no one should be deterred from speaking out in peaceful decent, but then implies this doesn't apply to anyone that speaks out in decent against her views and tactics. She is the ultimate hypocrit. And yes, show Palin a cross and she'll nail herself to every time.

bring in this woman as a source of inspiration
is abhorrent. I didn't think I could be more repulsed, but I am once again wrong about that. Nobody has been put through the ringer even close to as much as this lady and she keeps fighting back. The only thing that keeps me from screaming obscenities is the inspiration that this is America, and if she can fight that hatred I can conduct myself in a positive way and spread truth so maybe we can see things in a clear light for once, instead of the clouded mess they want us to be distracted by. I say fight on Sarah, for you are a hopeful inspiration to many just by your determination and resolve. There are far too few of those around here, that's for sure.

Palin blabbers off and is not clever enough to realize what some of her words mean or reactions they can provoke. Then she blames others for their "misunderstandings" and "interpretations.
Maybe she should study up a bit and think before she speaks.
tonypal| 1.13.11 @ 9:00AM
Martha, just because you don't understand doesn't mean the rest of us don't. But I wonder if you were concerned when merely hours after the shooting took place, media liberals were already attacking Palin and other conservatives for being accessories to murder. Did it concern you that people other than the shooter were being blamed?
Again, if you're too stupid to understand what Sarah Palin is saying, you're entitled to your own stupidity. The rest of us got it. Further, we fully support her right to defend herself when she is unfairly targeted (hope the word "targeted" doesn't cause a fellow TAS reader to go on a shooting rampage). What the hell else is she supposed to do genius? Sit back and take it?
I Survived Arlen Specter | 1.13.11 @ 10:11AM
The really ironic thing Martha is your post encapsulates the left perfectly. Please take your own advice & may you come face to face with the real truth, GOD's truth, who is Jesus Christ. If people spent more time in fellowship with GOD when bad things occur instead of trying to pin blame on people they dislike for those bad things this country would be more peaceful & the people wouldn't constantly be at each other's throats. GOD is the answer to all problems & only He is fit to assign blame when problems occur. Please remember that the person who spends their life pointing fingers at others for everything wrong in this world may someday have a finger pointing at them by The One (not Barack Obama) who knows all. Take care & GOD bless Martha!
Ronnie| 1.13.11 @ 6:41AM
To the conservatives in here....YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME ON THE COMMIES IN HERE!!
You believe in truth..they don't. They believe in the ends justifies the means. They lie. Remember they said the healthcare bill wasn't a tax...until it went to court. Then it was a tax because healthcare is interstate commerce.
You believe in justice and it's blind...they believe in social justice. Which since you are a victim of a rich white guy who hired you for a job you deserve 60% of his money. Or you are some other victim you are a girl or you are black etc....
You believe in low taxes..they believe they can tax their way out of all the spending they do and must keep on raising taxes. Til when you ask? Til everyone is as poor and as miserable as they are.
You don't believe in abortion ....there are liberals that want to be able to abort a person up to 18 months after a child is born along with the already sickening practice of pulling a person out of the womb all except the head then inserting a needle to kill him/her.
You believe in God and that someone should be able to worship the way they want to as long as you aren't killing people. Their god is the environment. It's their church. And if you don't believe you must be punished.
You believe that chairity starts at home and you aren't feeling very chairitable on April 15th.
You believe in the second amendment not only to protect yourself from intruders. but also (if it ever comes to it) to protect you and your family from the government. Plus shootin a gun is fun hunting tasty animals is fun.
You like oil, coal and gas...these are the fuels of the future. They believe in the electric car and windmills. Tell me if we all buy electric cars..where is all the electricy going to come from? I mean you love the earth and you keep people from building houses everywhere. How many acres are you willing to sacrifice for windmills?
Brad| 1.13.11 @ 7:57AM
Ronnie, your post would be much better if you were literate. Here, let me help:
"Which since you are a victim of a rich white guy who hired you for a job you deserve 60% of his money." -This sentence makes no sense. I understand your point, but you wrote it like a 3rd grader.
"Or you are some other victim you are a girl or you are black etc...." You need some punctuation here.
The word "Til" isn't actually a word.
-Okay, let me help you here again. First, no one wants to kill a baby "up to 18 months after a child is born." That's murder; it's illegal, and you made that up. Let's continue:
"along with the already sickening practice of pulling a person out of the womb all except the head then inserting a needle to kill him/her."
Babies come out HEAD FIRST. Furthermore, killing a child while it's being born is also murder, and is not being done by anyone, anywhere in the U.S. Where do yo get your information?
"Plus shootin a gun is fun hunting tasty animals is fun."
You need some punctuation in there. A spelling lesson might help as well.
"Tell me if we all buy electric cars..where is all the electricy going to come from?"
'Electricy'? Really? That's how you spell it?
It's always a pleasure to hear from such well researched and well-spoken folks like you. Keep up the good work. (Your tin foil hat is loose again.)

What in the world is Sarah Palin ever do for you guys to hate her like you do? Is it the conservative part of her? The Femine part of her? the motherly part of her? The beautiful body and soul part of her? For the handsome husband and beautiful children part of her..the intellect part of her...give me a clue as to why you "hate" her so very much...I feel in awe of her..
lottiej| 1.13.11 @ 11:20AM
i don't know why people "hate" her, because i don't "hate" her, i just really don't like her. firstly, she represents what women who went to college and worked hard really don't like: somebody who just gets by on her looks without substance. and she has no real substance, other than to blame liberals, mexicans, muslims, obama, whoever else she feels like pointing a finger at, the "lamestream" media or whatever, over and over and over again. and people who just don't seem to know any better buy into it without thinking because she's so "attractive." it's frustrating. she's like the mean prom queen. everybody wants to have sex with her so she's popular. she's so snarky and not that smart. i wouldn't call her "feminine" at all! not in the least. bulldogs, grizzly bears, etc., not so feminine. michelle obama is feminine: she's stands by her man, she shields her children from the lime light, and she genuinely seems to care about the downtrodden.
and really, what turned me off right away is the way palin uses her children. i saw that the first night when mccain introduced her. i'm a mother, and those poor children should have been at a sitter. i couldn't believe the way they were making that little girl hold the baby for that long a period of time! and dancing with the stars was just the icing on the cake.
i really wanted to like the woman, because i wasn't totally sold on obama yet. i voted for mccain in 2000. but in the end i voted against palin, and that's really what made up my mind. she was actively inflaming the public at her rallies, making racist innuendos that rural folks like myself get. and we all heard the shouting from the crowds. even mccain had to distance himself from her. poor mccain. i hope it was worth it.
but i probably won't vote for obama again just because he seems to be a lot of talk but can't seem to pull it off. if bloomberg runs, he's got my vote.

Bloomberg is a Leftist who should really come out soon. He's no respecter of the law, having done his best Hugo Chavez to get NYC's mayoral term limits law overturned so he could run for a third term ... and then barely winning after dropping a few tons of his own money to buy the race.
If Bloomie's your man, then you have no standards.
tonypal| 1.13.11 @ 1:16PM
So much silliness in your post, it's hard to respond to everything. I'll just pick one thing, your being "turned off" by how she used her children. I will preface this by asking if you voted for Bill Clinton and then Al Gore. Since you voted for Obama, I will assume you did.
Al Gore has repeatedly used his family in the most grotesque way. First, it was his dead son who was referenced at the democrat national convention. Then, it was his sister who died from lung cancer, likely the result of smoking. All of this to evoke an emotional reaction, which in your case was probably successful. Do you recall these things and were you as turned off then as you claim to be now.
Go look at any convention held by either party and you will find the stage packed with family members. Was Sarah Palin supposed to leave her kids with the babysitter because people like you might take offense? How absurd.
tonypal| 1.13.11 @ 1:19PM
Correction. Al Gore's son didn't die. He was severely injured in a car accident. All the same, he made a big thing of it at the democrat national convention. Like all liberals, never afraid to exploit the suffering of others for the sake of politics. Kind of like a recent incident.

Baloney. You and the left never wanted her to do anything but dry up and go away. Incidentally, if you want to know what happens when a national figure spews inflammatory rhetoric and directly calls for violent action, why don't you review some of the garbage that has come out of the mouth of your dear leader Obama. Recall that right after he told a (typical) audience of brain dead followers to "get in peoples faces," a large mob descended on the home of one of the chief executives of AIG. A 14 year old child was trapped inside in utter terror for 2 days while Obama's acolytes, spurred on by his inflammatory rhetoric surrounded the house and intimidated a 14 year old kid.
Unlike this BS about "bullseye maps" and some connection between what Palin says to the Arizona shooting, there's between Obama's rhetoric and action. I could cite many more direct links, such as the conservative black guy who got the shit knocked out of him by SEIU thugs at a townhall in St. Louis last year, again right after inflammatory "get in their face" rhetoric from Obama.
Lastly, for your viewing pleasure, here's a "bullseye map" put out by the Democrat Leadership Council back in 2004. The DLC was formed by Bill Clinton.

Palin's vid would actually be laughable if there weren't true victims involved here. She politicized it more -asking for the comparison with Obama's speech by releasing her vid the morning of the memorial. Who despite what you think of his politics, knocked it out of the park. Obama made the layup. MeeMee Palin, go fill the water bottles. Defend yourself all you want MeeMee Palin, but you should've chose to play the victim card on a different day. Palin's clear lack of judgment resurfaced again. She's not just a joke, she's a disgusting joke.

I think I can sum up your "reasoning" this way: The mainstream media, large segments of the democrat party and freaks on leftist websites are free to make any accusation they wish against Sarah Palin, no matter how demented and scurrilous and she's required to sit back and take it. Do I have it right?
If I don't, why don't you tell us what she should have done. Try to explain it in a rational manner, if you can.

I can see that Obama's call for civil discourse is working with his foaming at the mouth base. Morons.
