Majority Leader Eric Cantor just released the following statement on the upcoming week’s schedule:

“In consultation with the Speaker and the Democratic Leadership, I have postponed all previously-scheduled legislation for the coming week to accommodate any action needed in light of yesterday’s tragic events in Arizona.

“The House will meet on Tuesday in pro forma session and there will be no votes or legislative business expected for that day.

“On Wednesday, the House will meet at 10:00 a.m. for legislative business and we will consider at least one resolution honoring Representative Giffords and honoring those who have fallen, including Federal Judge John Roll and Gabe Zimmerman, a member of Congresswoman Giffords’ congressional staff.

“At the request of bipartisan Members from the Arizona delegation and the Democratic Leadership, it is my intention to not have a recorded vote for the resolution.  As Members know, however, we cannot assure that a recorded vote will not be requested.  We will continue to be in close contact with the Democratic Leadership regarding those matters, along with the substance of the resolution, and will relay them as they become available.

“For now, it is my recommendation that all Members of the House who can, return to Washington to honor those who have fallen and to receive any necessary security briefings from the U.S. Capitol Police.  I will defer on the latter issue to the Speaker and the Sergeant At Arms.”

A lone nut can close congress for a week!

It is generally good that when there is no legislation, but this is cowardice. People are murdered all the time and you have to go on. What if our military stopped for a week after a casualty? This happened in Arizona and not DC.

Does all of this make a skeptic wonder how much of this hype and garment renting would be shown if the poor soul had been a Republican? One cannot help but be sorrowful for this tragedy but the world did not stop on its axis, did it?

JmsA| 1.9.11 @ 4:57PM

I believe the world may have, if only momentarily, stopped on its axis for those directly affected. This includes the brokenhearted father of the murdered little girl whose audio interview just concluded.

By the way, also just interviewed, is the Sheriff of Pima County, C. Dupnik, who is waxing philosophical about free speech (particularly from those in a position of prominence; hint: Sarah Palin, etc.) having consequences and needing to be looked into--lest this kind of thing continue to happen. Talk about hypocritical projection. It's just amazing what is going on in America.

Liberal Reader| 1.9.11 @ 6:08PM

Cantor and Boehner are showing class and dignity in the wake of the shooting, it seems to me.

I wonder if the right fringes will find the strength to question themselves and their own motives and actions -- if only for a moment. It seems to me a terrible arrogance and weakness among Tea Partiers to be seemingly devoid of self-doubt or any kind of self-criticism.

Alan Brooks| 1.10.11 @ 12:02PM

No way, a wingnut is a wingnut. Some are still birthers at heart; some whackos think Obama is the Antichrist. Liberal Reader, social progress today is illusory or superficial.

Take your pick.

Patriot| 1.11.11 @ 10:48PM

You're such an ass, you're probably a truther.

tatosian| 1.9.11 @ 6:37PM

Never let a good crisis go to waste.
Cantor and Boehner will use this tragedy to revert to their "go along to get along' philosophy.
The justification will probably be something like "How can we, in good conscience, continue this divisive partisanship when one of our own has been gunned down because of those divisions? No. Now is a time for coming together and cooling the heated rhetoric. We owe it to the American people. And oh yeah. Sarah Palin. Tea Party. Right wing bigots. Bush."
You know, something along those lines.
By the way. How does someone get shot through the skull with a large caliber round and still "respond to commands"?
Anyone?

Bruce| 1.10.11 @ 8:49PM

Are you a medical doctor by any chance. better yet a neurologist? It is entirely possible for such things to occur and has many times previous to this. It depends largely on where the round entered and existed, and what critical segment/s of the brain that were penetrated during its path.

tatosian| 1.10.11 @ 11:45PM

I don't have to be a doctor, neurologist, cop or emt to question any line the media feeds me okay?
I just thought her responses, as described, more closely aligned with the results of a concussion, rather than a gunshot wound to the head. You know, a graze rather than an entry and exit wound.

Clint| 1.10.11 @ 1:20AM

Yeah, We'll All Take The Week Off Because One Of The Federal Hired Help Got Shot.
Take A Moment Of Silence And Prayer And Get Back To Work.

Gasman| 1.10.11 @ 3:52AM

I expect that from Dems ,but I guess Boehner,Cantor and Mc Carthy are no different.Watch out for Cantor especially,he is a wussy at heart.

OLDRAY| 1.10.11 @ 8:55AM

Closing the business of Congress is a victory for the deranged killer. An hour of tribute to the Comgresswoman ,the Judge and the other victims would be fitting. Do we close New York when a policeman gets shot? Will we close State and Federal Governments when a Marine or Soldier is murdered by terrorist Taliban in Afghanistan ? The country is acting in panic. What have we become?

Richard Baker| 1.10.11 @ 9:16AM

tatosian and all the other loudmouths above:
Shut up. A tragedy for the Country occurred. Try and have a semblance of respect and dignity for the departed, the survivors, the families, and the Country.

tatosian| 1.10.11 @ 11:17PM

I saw no respect or dignity being exhibited by the left and our political elites.
To the contrary, the media attacked all things conservative while the politicians demanded more security, more control over our 1st amendment rights and a permanent waiver from the tsa grope squad.
And that's only what we can see.
The tragedy is forever ongoing.

Clint| 1.10.11 @ 11:14AM

Let's See Ya Make Us Shut Up, Baker.

Richard Baker| 1.10.11 @ 11:24AM

Ah Clint:
I notice your mental flatulence.

Margie| 1.10.11 @ 4:32PM

Don't forget who this is, Richard: Tim* now posting as Clint.
He is a coward who enjoys posting spewing his filth and hatred at anyone who disagrees with him about anything.
He does not have the ability to reason or logic, and if you dare to keep at him he will threaten you with bodily harm.
And watch out. If you call him a name in return for his vileness, the editor pals of his will remove both you and your posts.
Tim* is an anti-semite and an Anarcho Capitalist and believes in Replacement Theology. They have no consciences.
Beware.

Patriot| 1.11.11 @ 8:04PM

It's cowardly of you to use Baker's honest comment to bolster your crazy jihad against Tim*, Margie.

Clint| 1.10.11 @ 11:30AM

Ah Baker:

I notice Your Brain Fart.

Don't Lecture Us.
