Farewell, Feingold

The now-departed (from the Senate) Russ Feingold’s legacy will be defined in large part by teaming with John McCain in an effort to shred the First Amendment. Jesse Walker and Bill Kauffman remind us of the Wisconsin Democrat’s good points. He was a mix of good, bad, and ugly in the William Proxmire-Eugene McCarthy tradition. Don’t get me wrong: I’d much rather have Ron Johnson than Russ Feingold. But if I could trade Chuck Schumer for Feingold, I’d take it.

Chuckie Schumer isn't worth a shrimp turd.

Clint| 1.5.11 @ 3:21PM

Tea Party voters supported new Senator Ron Johnson & gave Feingold his walking papers.

The fact that more conservatives don't have a kind word for Feingold suggests something is wrong in conservative thinking. No one would expect conservatives to vote for Feingold or support most of the specific policies he supports. He is a liberal, no question. But Feingold is a man of superior integrity; he believes in good, clean government. He is an enemy of wasteful spending. The reason Republicans hate him so much is he's also an enemy of corporate special interests purchasing political power in DC. I would expect at least some of the Tea Partiers to see this.

As one of Feingold's constituents, I have seem him change from a born-again William Proxmire (our dearly loved and admired Senator from a few decades ago) to something far less palatable. The perception here, judging from the most recent election, was that he became just another Democrat ruled by the party's leadership, and was no longer the independent maverick he once claimed to be.
Potomac Fever claimed another one!

I think if your criteria for decency and integrity include agreeing with Rush Limbaugh about absolutely everything you'll have a hard time liking Feingold.

I don't know why I bother to appeal to people so utterly certain that they are right and pure on everything.

Some day maybe I'll see what it's like on such high ground. Until then, I have to do the best I can down here among the lurid sublunary beings who just call things as best they can.

But it's been great being illuminated by all you angels and saints!

Megadittoes! And have a nice day.

I, too, am a (former) constituent of Sen. Feingold, the most dispicable politician I hope I'll ever meet.
Sitting in the audience of Feingold's annual listening session (that's what he calls it), he smuggly mocked the audience by insisting that he is doing what he thinks is good for us even if it is NOT what we are insisting we want. Decency and integrity? We learned at an early age what decency and integrity are and not from Rush. Feingold possesses neither and it sounds you don't know what they are either.

Wait one second, LR. Who is giving billions to GM, GE, Google, rigging rebates to help car companies, mandating we buy insurance, demanding banks lend money to people who can't pay it back and then guaranteeing the loan, etc.? It isn't conservatives doing this - it's both political parties. I don't want government giving ANY goodies to ANY company or industry. None, period. If they fail, they fail. That's what bankruptcy is for. I also don't want them taxed and regulated to death. So make sure who you are talking about.

Liberal Reader| 1.6.11 @ 9:46AM

Fine.

My only point was that Feingold has integrity in what he does; he fights against the sort of graft politics and sleazy deals that are driving everyone (including most liberals, by the way) half nuts.

I'm not saying you have to support him, but you might try to appreciate the man.

It's similar to the way that another Cheese Head, Paul Ryan, is the sort of Republican a liberal should appreciate.

Ryan is thoughtful and smart, articulate, interesting, bold, and good natured. I support not one thing he supports, but I like him.

Eric CArtman| 1.6.11 @ 11:41AM

I respect Feingold in that he is honest about who he is (and his opposition to corporate welfare - rent seekers). Chuckie Schumer on the other hand . . .

Just another lawyer, looking to last a career as a US Senator on the public teat. Two terms are enough; 18 years are way too many. Kick the bums out.

Liberal Reader| 1.6.11 @ 12:47PM

The Constitution provides for their to be senators. There is, in fact, a Senate. The "public teat" is a pretty ignorant way to describe office holders elected by their constituents to represent them.

You guys should tune in today when they read the Constitution. Surely the best idea a Republican's had in decades.

PattyMor| 1.5.11 @ 4:01PM

Are you kidding about the good, clean government part. Perhaps you didn't read the posts on this wedsite referring to Feingold as the senator from ACORN (you know the corrupt organization that's big into voter registration fraud). Or that McCain Feingold legislation was really about drying up sources of funding for politicos, driving them into the arms of George Soros?

One more of the twins will probably go the next time - Crossover McShame. Gee, wouldn't that be a terrible McShame?

"But if I could trade Chuck Schumer for Feingold, I'd take it."

That's not exactly high praise for Feingold, as, off the top of my head, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone for whom I wouldn't trade Schumer.

Cliff| 1.7.11 @ 10:41AM

"I'm hard pressed to think of anyone for whom I wouldn't trade Schumer."

Barbara Boxer.

She's pretty much the only one I can think of that's even worse.
