Later today, newly elected members of the Michigan House of Representatives will be sworn into office.

One of those rookie members is a 23-year old waitress named Andrea LaFontaine who after narrowly winning the GOP primary in August went on to defeat Democratic incumbent Jennifer Haase in November and will now represent Michigan’s 32nd District which comprises part of Macomb and St. Clair counties in the eastern part of the state. LaFontaine was part of a Republican resurgence that helped the GOP regain the Michigan House.

The Detroit News did a very nice profile on LaFontaine. They interviewed her during her shift at Ken’s Country Kitchen in Richmond, Michigan. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and has no illusions that the work before her is going to be easy. LaFontaine said,”What’s going through my mind right now is how I have two years to make a difference and if I don’t do it then I don’t deserve to have this job again in two years.”

Well, that’s a refreshing attitude. With that sentiment in mind, let’s wish Andrea LaFontaine good luck.

Always a shock when closet-case Guardiano overcomes his obsession with homosexuality to come up with some other idea. Must be a New Years's resolution to appear less gay or something.

Maybe she'll represent a break from the screwing the American public is enduring under career politicians and Wall Street. Ethanol as mandated needs to go away, with its subsidies. Speculation on oil, only recently legalized, also needs to be addressed. I'm so tired of being lied to. Democrats say $5 gal is "good," and we should drive hybrids. Republicans say "drill, baby, drill," while both look away as big finance/banks give them $$$$. They ignore the elephant in the room, speculation. Oil is plentiful. In the Western world, low polluting. Between the politicization of oil and the behavior of Wall Street, the public is taking a beating!

Mark (previous post) I am not sure where you got your information, but I just want to clarify a few things. I don't know if you understand the level of government that this article is referring to. I agree with your issues you raise when it comes to the price of oil and financial institution lobbyists spending millions in support of their candidants. But your issues need to be in another forum. Your points need to get to the federal government level, so they can be read by the people that make those decisions. State governments have no control when it comes to regulating the banking or oil company lobbyists or the oil companies when it comes to the price they sell gasoline for or how much profits they can make. Here is an example. A few years ago Governor Grandholm and 5 other state governors tried to get the president to sign a bill (I am unsure of the specifics) that would help consumers with the sky rocketing price of gasoline. Of course President Bush did not sign it. When it comes to lobbyists trying to win over the hearts of the legislators in Michigan, here is how that all works. Every year on Mackinac Island the lobbyists throw a big party for all the polititions. Most of them go and some do not. Most of the ones that don't go, don't go because of ethics. Jennifer Haase never went to Mackinac Island during that time and in my opinion she did a great job and represented her district well. I hope representative LaFontaine refrains from going as well, if anything to send a message to the rest of the representatives that big business does not control the 32nd district. The people do. Thanks Jennifer.

If Andrea LaFontaine is 23 years old, we have a problem. The constitution requires you to be 25 to serve in the House of Representatives.

Sorry, state house. I misread it.
